Paulo escreve que a morte de Jesus foi uma demonstração de Sua justiça no presente, a fim de que ele mesmo seja justo e justificador daquele que tem fé em Jesus (v.26).
As palavras em português justo e justificador são a forma substantiva, adjetiva e verbal da palavra raiz grega "dike". Jesus realiza a ação e Ele é o justificador (verbo). Não podemos acrescentar nada. Nenhuma quantidade de "fazer o bem" da nossa parte contribui para nos tornarmos justos aos olhos Dele.
Nós nos tornamos justos (adjetivo, descrevendo nossa relação com Deus) quando recebemos o presente gratuito que Jesus dá por meio de Sua ação (verbo) de morrer na cruz. Quando nos tornamos justos (adjetivo) ao receber o presente gratuito que resulta da ação de Jesus de justificar (verbo), então nos tornamos justos diante de Deus (substantivo). Esta é agora a nossa posição legal perante Deus.
Somos justos perante Deus não por causa do que fizemos, mas por causa do que Jesus fez em nosso nome, como aquele que toma a ação; Jesus é o justificador. Jesus pode justificar porque Ele pagou o preço pela nossa redenção (v.24).
