Don Stewart :: In What Sense Is God Jealous?

Choose a new font size and typeface
Don Stewart

The Bible says that God is a jealous God. In the Ten Commandments we read.

You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me (Exodus 20:4,5).

His Is Not Like Human Jealously

The jealousy of God is not the same as human jealousy. God's jealousy is a godly jealousy. Paul wrote of such a thing.

I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy. I promised you to one husband, to Christ, so that I might present you as a pure virgin to him (2 Corinthians 11:2).

Summary

The Bible says that God is a jealous God. However the jealousy of God is not the same as human jealously. The jealousy of the Lord is a godly jealousy.
