Don Stewart :: Did God Create Humanity Because He Needed Our Love?

Oftentimes we hear people say that God created humanity because He needed someone to love. Does God need our love?

God Needs Nothing

The answer is no. God does not need anything to exist. He is adequate in Himself. His existence is not dependent upon angels or humankind for He is complete in Himself. Jesus said of God the Father: "For as the Father has life in Himself" (John 5:26).

The Apostle Paul, while speaking to people on Mars Hill, affirmed God's self-existence.

God, who made the world and everything in it, since he is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands. Nor is he worshipped with men's hands, as though he needed anything, since he gives to all life, breath, and all things (Acts 17:24,25).

The adequacy of God is a theme that is found in both the Old and New Testaments. Those who mistakenly think that God created humanity because He needed love do not fully comprehend the situation. Before angels or humankind were created there was God. God is a Trinity comprised of Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Within the Trinity there was already love and communication. There was nothing lacking with God that made Him create humanity.

Humanity Was Created To Glorify God

If that was the case then why was humankind created? Humankind was created to glorify God. We were put on earth with a choice to trust God or to disobey Him. We have the opportunity to choose God and enjoy Him for all eternity.

In that same speech on Mars Hill the Apostle Paul said:

And he has made us from one blood every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, and has determined their preappointed times and the boundaries of their habitation, so that they should seek the Lord, in the hope that they may grope for him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us; for in him we live and move and have our being (Acts 17:26-28).

This is why we were created. It was not for God's benefit, it was for ours. If we follow the instructions that God has given us, we can realize the purpose of our existence.

Summary

The creation of the human race was not to meet some need that God had; for He has no needs. God created humanity for our benefit not his. We can only realize the purpose of our existence if we follow the directions that God has given us in his Word.
