One of the ministries of the Holy Spirit is His indwelling. The Bible teaches that the Holy Spirit indwells all who believe in Christ. The gospel of John records Jesus saying:

On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out saying, "If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water." But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified (John 7:37-39).

The Apostle John wrote:

No one has seen God at any time. If we love one another, God abides in us, and His love has been perfected in us. By this we know that we abide in Him, and He in us, because He has given us of His Spirit. And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent the Son as Savior of the world (1 John 4:12-14).

The indwelling of the Holy Spirit occurs the moment a person receives Christ as Savior. The Spirit then begins His work in the life of the believer.

What does this mean to the individual? The indwelling ministry of the Holy Spirit allows Christ to dwell in our hearts forever. God can now work in a believers life, helping that person conform to the character of Christ.

For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren (Romans 8:29).

The indwelling work of the Spirit also gives the believer the security of knowing they are a child of God:

In whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise (Ephesians 1:13).
