Born: March 24, 1740, Frederick, Pennsylvania.
Died: December 17, 1811, Bristol, England.
Buried: The site of the Moravian church where John Antes attended, and its adjoining burial ground, were redeveloped some years ago. The building itself disappeared long before this. The location of Antes’ remains is unknown.
Antes was a Moravian minister and missionary, a watchmaker by profession. In 1764, he was called to service at Herrnhut, Sachsen (Saxony), international headquarters of the Moravians. He was ordained in 1769, and spent the next 12 years in Egypt as the first American missionary there. In 1781, he left for two years in Germany before settling in Fulneck, England.

The Blue Letter Bible ministry and the BLB Institute hold to the historical, conservative Christian faith, which includes a firm belief in the inerrancy of Scripture. Since the text and audio content provided by BLB represent a range of evangelical traditions, all of the ideas and principles conveyed in the resource materials are not necessarily affirmed, in total, by this ministry.
