Born: January 2, 1828, Tavistock, Devon, England.

Died: March 28, 1896, Hampstead, London, England.

Elizabeth was the daughter of John Rundle, banker and Member of Parliament. She married lawyer Andrew Paton Charles in 1851. Anglican by affiliation, she was a gifted poet, musician, painter, and author, and translated a number of hymns. Her works include:

  • The Voice of Christian Life in Song; or, Hymns and Hymn-writers of Many Lands and Ages, 1858
  • The Three Wakings, and other Poems, 1859
  • The Chronicles of the Schönberg-Cotta Family, 1863
  • Poems, 1867
  • Songs Old and New, 1882
