Hatch attended Cambridge and Pembroke College, Oxford. He was ordained an Anglican priest in 1859, then went to Toronto, Canada, where he became a professor of classics at Trinity College. He later became rector of a high school in Quebec. He returned to England in 1867, teaching at St. Mary’s Hall, Oxford. In 1883, he became rector at Purleigh. A well known scholar, he wrote a concordance to the Septuagint, essays on Biblical Greek, gave Bampton Lectures in 1880, and Hibbert Lectures in 1888.
