Maurus was educated in Tours, France, around 802. In 803, he became director of the Benedictine school at Fulda, Germany. He was ordained in 814 and went on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. He became abbot at Fulda in 822, and served there two decades. In 847, he was appointed archbishop of Mainz.
