Died: May 30, 1937, Ashford, Kent, England.

Sydney Hugo Nicholson (1875-1947)

Nicholson attended the Rugby School, New College, Oxford, and the Royal College of Music. He played the organ in many locations:

  • Barnet Parish Church
  • Lower Chapel
  • Eton College
  • Carlisle Cathedral
  • Manchester Cathedral
  • Westminster Abbey

In 1927, Nicholson founded the School of English Church Music. He edited Hymns Ancient and Modern (1916-1947), and was knighted in 1938. His works include:

  • Boys Choirs, 1922
  • A Manual of English Church Music, 1923 (with George L. H. Gardner)
  • Quires and Places Where They Sing, 1932
  • Peter—The Adventure of a Chorister, 1944
