Born: March 3, 1844, Pickaway County, Ohio.

Died: June 11, 1908, Shelby County, Illinois.

Buried: Walnut Hill Cemetery, Shelby County, Illinois.

William Henry Pontius (1844-1908), in 1864

Pontius was a farmer, justice of the peace, and, in his early years, a band leader and held “singing schools.” He was also a sergeant in the American Civil War, serving in the 58th Ohio Volunteer Infantry at the Battles of Shiloh and Vicksburg. He was active in the United Brethren church most of his life.
