Harriet Beecher Stowe (1812-1896) Born: June 14, 1811, Litchfield, Connecticut.

Died: July 1, 1896, Hartford, Connecticut.

Harriet was the daughter of Congregational minister Lyman Beecher. Her mother died when she was four years old. At age 13, she began attending a girl’s school in Hartford, Connecticut. In 1832, her family moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, where her father became head of the Lane Theological Seminary. Harriet married Calvin Ellis Stowe, a professor there, in 1836. She became a professor herself at Bowdoin College, Maine, in 1850. Stowe wrote dozens of books, including the well known Uncle Tom’s Cabin, an anti-slavery novel published in 1852. Most of her hymns appeared in Plymouth Collection, published in 1855 by her brother, Henry Ward Beecher.

  1. Abide in Me, O Lord
  2. Still, Still with Thee
  3. That Mystic Work of Thine
