Turner attended Amherst College and Union Theological Seminary, New York, then became a Congregational minister, pastoring in Massachusetts and Connecticut. He also served as chaplain at the Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute (1892-1925). He received a Doctor of Divinity degree from Amherst College in 1905. His works include:
