They answered, “The man kept asking about us and our family: ‘Is your father still alive? Do you have another brother? ' And we answered him accordingly. How could we know that he would say, ‘Bring your brother here'? ”
“Pharaoh will say of the Israelites: They are wandering around the land in confusion; the wilderness has boxed them in.
“The priest will require the woman to take an oath and will say to her, ‘If no man has slept with you, if you have not gone astray and become defiled while under your husband's authority, be unaffected by this bitter water that brings a curse.
“at this point the priest will make the woman take the oath with the sworn curse, and he is to say to her — ‘May the LORD make you into an object of your people's cursing and swearing when he makes your womb[fn] shrivel and your belly swell.
“May this water that brings a curse enter your stomach, causing your belly to swell and your womb to shrivel.'
“And the woman will reply, ‘Amen, Amen.'
“He is to say to them, ‘Listen, Israel: Today you are about to engage in battle with your enemies. Do not be cowardly. Do not be afraid, alarmed, or terrified because of them.
“The young woman's father will say to the elders, ‘I gave my daughter to this man as a wife, but he hates her.
“But if the man doesn't want to marry his sister-in-law, she is to go to the elders at the city gate and say, ‘My brother-in-law refuses to preserve his brother's name in Israel. He isn't willing to perform the duty of a brother-in-law for me.'
“then his sister-in-law will go up to him in the sight of the elders, remove his sandal from his foot, and spit in his face. Then she will declare, ‘This is what is done to a man who will not build up his brother's house.'
“My anger will burn against them on that day; I will abandon them and hide my face from them so that they will become easy prey. Many troubles and afflictions will come to them. On that day they will say, ‘Haven't these troubles come to us because our God is no longer with us? '
“Now therefore, I've come to present this matter to my lord the king because the people have made me afraid. Your servant thought: I must speak to the king. Perhaps the king will grant his servant's request.
The king replied, “Sons of Zeruiah, do we agree on anything? He curses me this way because the LORD[fn] told him, ‘Curse David! ' Therefore, who can say, ‘Why did you do that? ' ”
“Blessed be the LORD God of Israel
from everlasting to everlasting.”
Then all the people said, “Amen” and “Praise the LORD.”
As for this temple, which was exalted, everyone who passes by will be appalled and will say, “Why did the LORD do this to this land and this temple?”
If he snatches something, who can stop[fn] him?
Who can ask him, “What are you doing? ”
Then people will say,
“Yes, there is a reward for the righteous!
There is a God who judges on earth! ”
And it will be said of Zion,
“This one and that one were born in her.”
The Most High himself will establish her.
I will say[fn] concerning the LORD, who is my refuge and my fortress,
my God in whom I trust:
Blessed be the LORD God of Israel,
from everlasting to everlasting.
Let all the people say, “Amen! ”
Hallelujah!
Can one say about anything,
“Look, this is new”?
It has already existed in the ages before us.
On that day he will cry out, saying,
“I'm not a healer.
I don't even have food or clothing in my house.
Don't make me the leader of the people! ”
I will wait for the LORD,
who is hiding his face from the house of Jacob.
I will wait for him.
For you the entire vision will be like the words of a sealed document. If it is given to one who can read and he is asked to read it,[fn] he will say, “I can't read it, because it is sealed.”
And if the document is given to one who cannot read and he is asked to read it,[fn] he will say, “I can't read.”
You have turned things around,
as if the potter were the same as the clay.
How can what is made say about its maker,
“He didn't make me”?
How can what is formed
say about the one who formed it,
“He doesn't understand what he's doing”?
The craftsman encourages the metalworker;
the one who flattens with the hammer
encourages the one who strikes the anvil,
saying of the soldering, “It is good.”
He fastens it with nails so that it will not fall over.
“This one will say, ‘I am the LORD's';
another will use the name of Jacob;
still another will write on his hand, ‘The LORD's,'
and take on the name of Israel.”
I have put my words in your mouth,
and covered you in the shadow of my hand,
in order to plant[fn] the heavens,
to found the earth,
and to say to Zion, “You are my people.”
“At that time, when you call, the LORD will answer;
when you cry out, he will say, ‘Here I am.'
If you get rid of the yoke among you,
the finger-pointing and malicious speaking,
“Let the violence done to me and my family be done to Babylon,”
says the inhabitant of Zion.
“Let my blood be on the inhabitants of Chaldea,”
says Jerusalem.
All the inhabitants of the earth are counted as nothing,
and he does what he wants with the army of heaven
and the inhabitants of the earth.
There is no one who can block his hand
or say to him, “What have you done? ”
She will pursue her lovers but not catch them;
she will look for them but not find them.
Then she will think,
“I will go back to my former husband,
for then it was better for me than now.”
I will sow her[fn] in the land for myself,
and I will have compassion
on Lo-ruhamah;
I will say to Lo-ammi:
You are my people,
and he will say, “You are my God.”
Then I said, “Now listen, leaders of Jacob,
you rulers of the house of Israel.
Aren't you supposed to know what is just?
Then all who see you will recoil from you, saying,
“Nineveh is devastated;
who will show sympathy to her? ”
Where can I find anyone to comfort you?
On that day it will be said to Jerusalem:
“Do not fear;
Zion, do not let your hands grow weak.
“If a man still prophesies, his father and his mother who bore him will say to him, ‘You cannot remain alive because you have spoken a lie in the name of the LORD.' When he prophesies, his father and his mother who bore him will pierce him through.
“He will say, ‘I am not a prophet; I work the land, for a man purchased[fn] me as a servant since my youth.'
“If someone asks him, ‘What are these wounds on your chest?'[fn] — then he will answer, ‘I received the wounds in the house of my friends.'
“I will put this third through the fire;
I will refine them as silver is refined
and test them as gold is tested.
They will call on my name,
and I will answer them.
I will say, ‘They are my people,'
and they will say, ‘The LORD is our God.' ”
