He was a powerful hunter in the sight of the LORD. That is why it is said, “Like Nimrod, a powerful hunter in the sight of the LORD.”
“When the Egyptians see you, they will say, ‘This is his wife.' They will kill me but let you live.
Moses answered, “What if they won't believe me and will not obey me but say, ‘The LORD did not appear to you'? ”
“If you kill this people with a single blow,[fn] the nations that have heard of your fame will declare,
“Carefully follow them, for this will show your wisdom and understanding in the eyes of the peoples. When they hear about all these statutes, they will say, ‘This great nation is indeed a wise and understanding people.'
“The officers will continue to address the army and say, ‘Is there any man who is afraid or cowardly? Let him leave and return home, so that his brothers won't lose heart as he did.'[fn]
“They will say to the elders of his city, ‘This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious; he doesn't obey us. He's a glutton and a drunkard.'
“The elders of his city will summon him and speak with him. If he persists and says, ‘I don't want to marry her,'
“‘The person who makes a carved idol or cast image, which is detestable to the LORD, the work of a craftsman, and sets it up in secret is cursed.'
And all the people will reply, ‘Amen! '
“‘The one who dishonors his father or mother is cursed.'
And all the people will say, ‘Amen! '
“‘The one who moves his neighbor's boundary marker is cursed.'
And all the people will say, ‘Amen! '
“‘The one who leads a blind person astray on the road is cursed.'
And all the people will say, ‘Amen! '
“‘The one who denies justice to a resident alien, a fatherless child, or a widow is cursed.'
And all the people will say, ‘Amen! '
“‘The one who sleeps with his father's wife is cursed, for he has violated his father's marriage bed.'[fn]
And all the people will say, ‘Amen! '
“‘The one who has sexual intercourse with any animal is cursed.'
And all the people will say, ‘Amen! '
“‘The one who sleeps with his sister, whether his father's daughter or his mother's daughter is cursed.'
And all the people will say, ‘Amen! '
“‘The one who sleeps with his mother-in-law is cursed.'
And all the people will say, ‘Amen! '
“‘The one who secretly kills his neighbor is cursed.'
And all the people will say, ‘Amen! '
“‘The one who accepts a bribe to kill an innocent person is cursed.'
And all the people will say, ‘Amen! '
“‘Anyone who does not put the words of this law into practice is cursed.'
And all the people will say, ‘Amen! '
“Future generations of your children who follow you and the foreigner who comes from a distant country will see the plagues of that land and the sicknesses the LORD has inflicted on it.
“All the nations will ask, ‘Why has the LORD done this to this land? Why this intense outburst of anger? '
“Then people will answer, ‘It is because they abandoned the covenant of the LORD, the God of their ancestors, which he had made with them when he brought them out of the land of Egypt.
“They will come after us until we have drawn them away from the city, for they will say, ‘They are fleeing from us as before.' While we are fleeing from them,
“Instead, it is to be a witness between us and you, and between the generations after us, so that we may carry out the worship of the LORD in his presence with our burnt offerings, sacrifices, and fellowship offerings. Then in the future, your descendants will not be able to say to our descendants, ‘You have no share in the LORD! '
“We thought that if they said this to us or to our generations in the future, we would reply: Look at the replica of the LORD's altar that our ancestors made, not for burnt offering or sacrifice, but as a witness between us and you.
Then they will say, “Because they abandoned the LORD their God who brought their ancestors out of the land of Egypt. They held on to other gods and bowed in worship to them and served them. Because of this, the LORD brought all this ruin on them.”
Then they will say, “Because they abandoned the LORD God of their ancestors who brought them out of the land of Egypt. They clung to other gods and bowed in worship to them and served them. Because of this, he brought all this ruin on them.”
he will vanish forever like his own dung.
Those who know[fn] him will ask, “Where is he? ”
All my bones will say,
“LORD, who is like you,
rescuing the poor from one too strong for him,
the poor or the needy from one who robs him? ”
Our mouths were filled with laughter then,
and our tongues with shouts of joy.
Then they said among the nations,
“The LORD has done great things for them.”
They will proclaim the power of your awe-inspiring acts,
and I will declare your greatness.[fn]
and many peoples will come and say,
“Come, let's go up to the mountain of the LORD,
to the house of the God of Jacob.
He will teach us about his ways
so that we may walk in his paths.”
For instruction will go out of Zion
and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.
Those who see you will stare at you;
they will look closely at you:
“Is this the man who caused the earth to tremble,
who shook the kingdoms,
“And the inhabitants of this coastland will say on that day, ‘Look, this is what has happened to those we relied on and fled to for help to rescue us from the king of Assyria! Now, how will we escape? ' ”
He said,
“You will not celebrate anymore,
ravished young woman, daughter of Sidon.
Get up and cross over to Cyprus —
even there you will have no rest! ”
From the ends of the earth we hear songs:
The Splendor of the Righteous One.
But I said, “I waste away! I waste away![fn]
Woe is me.”
The treacherous act treacherously;
the treacherous deal very treacherously.
On that day it will be said,
“Look, this is our God;
we have waited for him, and he has saved us.
This is the LORD; we have waited for him.
Let's rejoice and be glad in his salvation.”
Woe to those who go to great lengths
to hide their plans from the LORD.
They do their works in the dark,
and say, “Who sees us? Who knows us? ”
This is what the LORD says:
“The products of Egypt and the merchandise of Cush
and the Sabeans, men of stature,
will come over to you
and will be yours;
they will follow you,
they will come over in chains
and bow down to you.
They will confess[fn] to you,
‘God is indeed with you, and there is no other;
there is no other God.' ”
“Yet as you listen, the children
that you have been deprived of will say,
‘This place is too small for me;
make room for me so that I may settle.'
He said,
“Build it up, build it up, prepare the way,
remove every obstacle from my people's way.”
The LORD says this:
“As the new wine is found in a bunch of grapes,
and one says, ‘Don't destroy it,
for there's some good[fn] in it,'
so I will act because of my servants
and not destroy them all.
say to a tree, “You are my father,”
and to a stone, “You gave birth to me.”
For they have turned their back to me
and not their face,
yet in their time of disaster they beg,
“Rise up and save us! ”
“When you multiply and increase in the land, in those days — this is the LORD's declaration — no one will say again, “The ark of the LORD's covenant.” It will never come to mind, and no one will remember or miss it. Another one will not be made.[fn]
“At that time it will be said to this people and to Jerusalem, ‘A searing wind blows from the barren heights in the wilderness on the way to my dear[fn] people. It comes not to winnow or to sift;
“Therefore, look, the days are coming” — the LORD's declaration — “when this place will no longer be called Topheth and Ben Hinnom Valley, but Slaughter Valley. Topheth will become a cemetery,[fn] because there will be no other burial place.
“However, look, the days are coming” — the LORD's declaration — “when it will no longer be said, ‘As the LORD lives who brought the Israelites from the land of Egypt,'
LORD, my strength and my stronghold,
my refuge in a time of distress,
the nations will come to you
from the ends of the earth, and they will say,
“Our ancestors inherited only lies,
worthless idols of no benefit at all.”
“Many nations will pass by this city and ask one another, ‘Why did the LORD do such a thing to this great city? '
“They will answer, ‘Because they abandoned the covenant of the LORD their God and bowed in worship to other gods and served them.' ”
“Look, the days are coming” — the LORD's declaration — “when it will no longer be said, ‘As the LORD lives who brought the Israelites from the land of Egypt,'
This is what the LORD of Armies, the God of Israel, says: “When I restore their fortunes,[fn] they will once again speak this word in the land of Judah and in its cities: ‘May the LORD bless you, righteous settlement, holy mountain.'
All who pass by
scornfully clap their hands at you.
They hiss and shake their heads
at Daughter Jerusalem:
Is this the city that was called
the perfection of beauty,
the joy of the whole earth?
When the wall has fallen, will you not be asked, “Where's the whitewash you plastered on it? ”
“ ‘But your people say, “The Lord's way isn't fair,” even though it is their own way that isn't fair.
“Yet when all this comes true — and it definitely will — then they will know that a prophet has been among them.”
“They will say, “This land that was desolate has become like the garden of Eden. The cities that were once ruined, desolate, and demolished are now fortified and inhabited.”
In fact, they are now saying,
“We have no king!
For we do not fear the LORD.
What can a king do for us? ”
The high places of Aven, the sin of Israel,
will be destroyed;
thorns and thistles will grow over their altars.
They will say to the mountains, “Cover us! ”
and to the hills, “Fall on us! ”
Let the priests, the LORD's ministers,
weep between the portico and the altar.
Let them say,
“Have pity on your people, LORD,
and do not make your inheritance a disgrace,
an object of scorn among the nations.
Why should it be said among the peoples,
‘Where is their God? ' ”
and many nations will come and say,
“Come, let's go up to the mountain of the LORD,
to the house of the God of Jacob.
He will teach us about his ways
so we may walk in his paths.”
For instruction will go out of Zion
and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.
Won't all of these take up a taunt against him,
with mockery and riddles about him?
They will say,
“Woe to him who amasses what is not his —
how much longer? —
and loads himself with goods taken in pledge.”
