Then God said, “Let there be an expanse between the waters, separating water from water.”
So God made the expanse and separated the water under the expanse from the water above the expanse. And it was so.
Then God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to separate the day from the night. They will serve as signs for seasons[fn] and for days and years.
to rule the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good.
I will put hostility between you and the woman,
and between your offspring and her offspring.[fn]
He will strike your head,
and you will strike his heel.
And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all future generations:
“I have placed my bow in the clouds, and it will be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth.
“I will remember my covenant between me and you and all the living creatures: water will never again become a flood to destroy every creature.
“The bow will be in the clouds, and I will look at it and remember the permanent covenant between God and all the living creatures on earth.”
God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant that I have established between me and every creature on earth.”
He went by stages from the Negev to Bethel, to the place between Bethel and Ai where his tent had formerly been,
and there was quarreling between the herdsmen of Abram's livestock and the herdsmen of Lot's livestock. (At that time the Canaanites and the Perizzites were living in the land.)
So Abram said to Lot, “Please, let's not have quarreling between you and me, or between your herdsmen and my herdsmen, since we are relatives.
When the sun had set and it was dark, a smoking fire pot and a flaming torch appeared and passed between the divided animals.
“I will confirm my covenant that is between me and you and your future offspring throughout their generations. It is a permanent covenant to be your God and the God of your offspring after you.
“This is my covenant between me and you and your offspring after you, which you are to keep: Every one of your males must be circumcised.
“You must circumcise the flesh of your foreskin to serve as a sign of the covenant between me and you.[fn]
From there Abraham traveled to the region of the Negev and settled between Kadesh and Shur. While he was staying in Gerar,
“My lord, listen to me. Land worth four hundred shekels of silver — what is that between you and me? Bury your dead.”
As the camels finished drinking, the man took a gold ring weighing half a shekel, and for her wrists two bracelets weighing ten shekels of gold.
They replied, “We have clearly seen how the LORD has been with you. We think there should be an oath between two parties — between us and you. Let us make a covenant with you:
He put a three-day journey between himself and Jacob. Jacob, meanwhile, was shepherding the rest of Laban's flock.
“You've searched all my possessions! Have you found anything of yours?[fn] Put it here before my relatives and yours, and let them decide between the two of us.
“Come now, let's make a covenant, you and I. Let it be a witness between the two of us.”
Then Jacob said to his relatives, “Gather stones.” And they took stones and made a mound, then ate there by the mound.
Then Laban said, “This mound is a witness between you and me today.” Therefore the place was called Galeed
and also Mizpah,[fn] for he said, “May the LORD watch between you and me when we are out of each other's sight.
“The God of Abraham, and the gods of Nahor — the gods of their father[fn] — will judge between us.” And Jacob swore by the Fear of his father Isaac.
He entrusted them to his slaves as separate herds and said to them, “Go on ahead of me, and leave some distance between the herds.”
They did not realize that Joseph understood them, since there was an interpreter between them.
“I will make a distinction[fn] between my people and your people. This sign will take place tomorrow.”
“But the LORD will make a distinction between the livestock of Israel and the livestock of Egypt, so that nothing of all that the Israelites own will die.”
“But against all the Israelites, whether people or animals, not even a dog will snarl,[fn] so that you may know that the LORD makes a distinction between Egypt and Israel.
“Tell the Israelites to turn back and camp in front of Pi-hahiroth, between Migdol and the sea; you must camp in front of Baal-zephon, facing it by the sea.
It came between the Egyptian and Israelite forces. There was cloud and darkness, it lit up the night, and neither group came near the other all night long.
The entire Israelite community departed from Elim and came to the Wilderness of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after they had left the land of Egypt.
“there must be an oath before the LORD between the two of them to determine whether or not he has taken his neighbor's property. Its owner must accept the oath, and the other man does not have to make restitution.
“I will meet with you there above the mercy seat, between the two cherubim that are over the ark of the testimony; I will speak with you from there about all that I command you regarding the Israelites.

“Make pomegranates of blue, purple, and scarlet yarn on its lower hem and all around it. Put gold bells between them all the way around,
“Make a bronze basin for washing and a bronze stand for it. Set it between the tent of meeting and the altar, and put water in it.
They made bells of pure gold and attached the bells between the pomegranates, all around the hem of the robe between the pomegranates,
“You must distinguish between the holy and the common, and the clean and the unclean,
“in order to distinguish between the unclean and the clean, between the animals that may be eaten and those that may not be eaten.”
“Therefore you are to distinguish the clean animal from the unclean one, and the unclean bird from the clean one. Do not become contaminated by any land animal, bird, or whatever crawls on the ground; I have set these apart as unclean for you.
“The Passover to the LORD comes in the first month, at twilight on the fourteenth day of the month.
These are the statutes, ordinances, and laws the LORD established between himself and the Israelites through Moses on Mount Sinai.
“The priest will set its value, whether high or low; the price will be set as the priest makes the assessment for you.
“When a man consecrates his house as holy to the LORD, the priest will assess its value, whether high or low. The price will stand just as the priest assesses it.
When Moses entered the tent of meeting to speak with the LORD, he heard the voice speaking to him from above the mercy seat that was on the ark of the testimony, from between the two cherubim. He spoke to him that way.
So Moses spoke to the Israelites, and each of their leaders gave him a staff, one for each of the leaders of their tribes, twelve staffs in all. Aaron's staff was among them.
They set out from there and camped on the other side of the Arnon River, in the wilderness that extends from the Amorite border, because the Arnon was the Moabite border between Moab and the Amorites.
These are the statutes that the LORD commanded Moses concerning the relationship between a man and his wife, or between a father and his daughter in his house during her youth.
“Then divide the captives between the troops who went out to war and the entire community.
They camped by the Jordan from Beth-jeshimoth to the Acacia Meadow[fn] on the plains of Moab.
“the assembly is to judge between the person who kills someone and the avenger of blood according to these ordinances.
These are the words Moses spoke to all Israel across the Jordan in the wilderness, in the Arabah opposite Suph,[fn] between Paran and Tophel, Laban, Hazeroth, and Di-zahab.
“I commanded your judges at that time: Hear the cases between your brothers, and judge rightly between a man and his brother or his resident alien.
“At that time I was standing between the LORD and you to report the word[fn] of the LORD to you, because you were afraid of the fire and did not go up the mountain. And he said:
“You are sons of the LORD your God; do not cut yourselves or make a bald spot on your head[fn] on behalf of the dead,
“If a case is too difficult for you — concerning bloodshed, lawsuits, or assaults — cases disputed at your city gates, then go up to the place the LORD your God chooses.
“If there is a dispute between men, they are to go to court, and the judges will hear their case. They will clear the innocent and condemn the guilty.
“But keep a distance of about a thousand yards[fn] between yourselves and the ark. Don't go near it, so that you can see the way to go, for you haven't traveled this way before.”
So Joshua sent them out, and they went to the ambush site and waited between Bethel and Ai, to the west of Ai. But he spent that night with the troops.
Then men in ambush came out of the city against them, and the men of Ai were trapped between the Israelite forces, some on one side and some on the other. They struck them down until no survivor or fugitive remained,
the cities set apart for the descendants of Ephraim within the inheritance of the descendants of Manasseh — all these cities with their settlements.
From there the border descended to the Brook of Kanah; south of the brook, cities belonged to Ephraim among Manasseh's cities. Manasseh's border was on the north side of the brook and ended at the Mediterranean Sea.
The lot came up for the tribe of Benjamin's descendants by their clans, and their allotted territory lay between Judah's descendants and Joseph's descendants.
The second lot came out for Simeon, for the tribe of his descendants by their clans, but their inheritance was within the inheritance given to Judah's descendants.
“For the LORD has made the Jordan a border between us and you descendants of Reuben and Gad. You have no share in the LORD! ' So your descendants may cause our descendants to stop fearing the LORD.
“Instead, it is to be a witness between us and you, and between the generations after us, so that we may carry out the worship of the LORD in his presence with our burnt offerings, sacrifices, and fellowship offerings. Then in the future, your descendants will not be able to say to our descendants, ‘You have no share in the LORD! '
“We thought that if they said this to us or to our generations in the future, we would reply: Look at the replica of the LORD's altar that our ancestors made, not for burnt offering or sacrifice, but as a witness between us and you.
So the Reubenites and Gadites named the altar: It[fn] is a witness between us that the LORD is God.
“Your ancestors cried out to the LORD, so he put darkness between you and the Egyptians, and brought the sea over them, engulfing them. Your own eyes saw what I did to Egypt. After that, you lived in the wilderness a long time.
She would sit under the palm tree of Deborah between Ramah and Bethel in the hill country of Ephraim, and the Israelites went up to her to settle disputes.
Meanwhile, Sisera had fled on foot to the tent of Jael, the wife of Heber the Kenite, because there was peace between King Jabin of Hazor and the family of Heber the Kenite.
While he was sleeping from exhaustion, Heber's wife, Jael, took a tent peg, grabbed a hammer, and went silently to Sisera. She hammered the peg into his temple and drove it into the ground, and he died.
Let them tell the righteous acts of the LORD,
the righteous deeds of his villagers in Israel,
with the voices of the singers at the watering places.[fn]
Then the LORD's people went down to the city gates.
Why did you sit among the sheep pens[fn]
listening to the playing of pipes for the flocks?
There was great searching of heart
among the clans of Reuben.
He collapsed, he fell, he lay down between her feet;
he collapsed, he fell between her feet;
where he collapsed, there he fell — dead.
God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the citizens of Shechem. They treated Abimelech deceitfully,
The elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, “The LORD is our witness if we don't do as you say.”
“I have not sinned against you, but you are doing me wrong by fighting against me. Let the LORD who is the judge decide today between the Israelites and the Ammonites.”
Then the Spirit of the LORD began to stir him in the Camp of Dan,[fn] between Zorah and Eshtaol.
So he went out and caught three hundred foxes. He took torches, turned the foxes tail-to-tail, and put a torch between each pair of tails.
Then she let him fall asleep on her lap and called a man to shave off the seven braids on his head. In this way, she made him helpless, and his strength left him.
When they were in good spirits,[fn] they said, “Bring Samson here to entertain us.” So they brought Samson from prison, and he entertained them. They had him stand between the pillars.
Then his brothers and his father's whole family came down, carried him back, and buried him between Zorah and Eshtaol in the tomb of his father Manoah. So he judged Israel twenty years.
Where you die, I will die,
and there I will be buried.
May the LORD punish me,
and do so severely,
if anything but death separates you and me.
When she got up to gather grain, Boaz ordered his young men, “Let her even gather grain among the bundles, and don't humiliate her.
Afterward, Samuel took a stone and set it upright between Mizpah and Shen. He named it Ebenezer,[fn] explaining, “The LORD has helped us to this point.”
The cities from Ekron to Gath, which they had taken from Israel, were restored; Israel even rescued their surrounding territories from Philistine control. There was also peace between Israel and the Amorites.
There were sharp columns[fn] of rock on both sides of the pass that Jonathan intended to cross to reach the Philistine garrison. One was named Bozez and the other Seneh;
Then Saul said, “Cast the lot between me and my son Jonathan,” and Jonathan was selected.
The Philistines gathered their forces for war at Socoh in Judah and camped between Socoh and Azekah in Ephes-dammim.
The Philistines were standing on one hill, and the Israelites were standing on another hill with a ravine between them.
There was bronze armor on his shins, and a bronze javelin was slung between his shoulders.
But David said, “Your father certainly knows that I have found favor with you. He has said, ‘Jonathan must not know of this, or else he will be grieved.' ” David also swore, “As surely as the LORD lives and as you yourself live, there is but a step between me and death.”
“As for the matter you and I have spoken about, the LORD will be a witness[fn] between you and me forever.”
Jonathan then said to David, “Go in the assurance the two of us pledged in the name of the LORD when we said, ‘The LORD will be a witness between you and me and between my offspring and your offspring forever.' ” Then David left, and Jonathan went into the city.
“May the LORD judge between me and you, and may the LORD take vengeance on you for me, but my hand will never be against you.
“May the LORD be judge and decide between you and me. May he take notice and plead my case and deliver[fn] me from you.”
David crossed to the other side and stood on top of the mountain at a distance; there was a considerable space between them.
During the long war between the house of Saul and the house of David, David was growing stronger and the house of Saul was becoming weaker.
During the war between the house of Saul and the house of David, Abner kept acquiring more power in the house of Saul.
“Your servant had two sons. They were fighting in the field with no one to separate them, and one struck the other and killed him.
He would get up early and stand beside the road leading to the city gate. Whenever anyone had a grievance to bring before the king for settlement, Absalom called out to him and asked, “What city are you from? ” If he replied, “Your servant is from one of the tribes of Israel,”
while all his servants marched past him. Then all the Cherethites, the Pelethites, and the people of Gath— six hundred men who came with him from there — marched past the king.
“I will do whatever you think is best,” the king replied to them. So he stood beside the city gate while all the troops marched out by hundreds and thousands.
Absalom was riding on his mule when he happened to meet David's soldiers. When the mule went under the tangled branches of a large oak tree, Absalom's head was caught fast in the tree. The mule under him kept going, so he was suspended in midair.[fn]
David was sitting between the city gates when the watchman went up to the roof of the city gate and over to the wall. The watchman looked out and saw a man running alone.
“I'm now eighty years old. Can I discern what is pleasant and what is not? Can your servant taste what he eats or drinks? Can I still hear the voice of male and female singers? Why should your servant be an added burden to my lord the king?
David spared Mephibosheth, the son of Saul's son Jonathan, because of the oath of the LORD that was between David and Jonathan, Saul's son.
“So give your servant a receptive heart to judge your people and to discern between good and evil. For who is able to judge this great people of yours? ”
The LORD gave Solomon wisdom, as he had promised him. There was peace between Hiram and Solomon, and the two of them made a treaty.
This was the design of the carts: They had frames; the frames were between the cross-pieces,
and on the frames between the cross-pieces were lions, oxen, and cherubim. On the cross-pieces there was a pedestal above, and below the lions and oxen were wreaths of hanging[fn] work.
The king had them cast in clay molds in the Jordan Valley between Succoth and Zarethan.
The rest of the events of Abijam's reign, along with all his accomplishments, are written in the Historical Record of Judah's Kings. There was also war between Abijam and Jeroboam.
“There is a treaty between me and you, between my father and your father. Look, I have sent you a gift of silver and gold. Go and break your treaty with King Baasha of Israel so that he will withdraw from me.”
Wasn't it reported to my lord what I did when Jezebel slaughtered the LORD's prophets? I hid a hundred of the prophets of the LORD, fifty men to a cave, and I provided them with food and water.
So Ahab went to eat and drink, but Elijah went up to the summit of Carmel. He bent down on the ground and put his face between his knees.
But a man drew his bow without taking special aim and struck the king of Israel through the joints of his armor. So he said to his charioteer, “Turn around and take me out of the battle,[fn] for I am badly wounded! ”
As they continued walking and talking, a chariot of fire with horses of fire suddenly appeared and separated the two of them. Then Elijah went up into heaven in the whirlwind.
Then Jehu drew his bow and shot Joram between the shoulders. The arrow went through his heart, and he slumped down in his chariot.
Then Jehoiada made a covenant between the LORD, the king, and the people that they would be the LORD's people and another covenant between the king and the people.[fn]
He took the bronze altar that was before the LORD in front of the temple between his altar and the LORD's temple, and put it on the north side of his altar.
Then the city was broken into, and all the warriors fled at night by way of the city gate between the two walls near the king's garden, even though the Chaldeans surrounded the city. As the king made his way along the route to the Arabah,
When David looked up and saw the angel of the LORD standing between earth and heaven, with his drawn sword in his hand stretched out over Jerusalem, David and the elders, covered in sackcloth, fell facedown.

and he reigned three years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Micaiah[fn] daughter of Uriel; she was from Gibeah.

“For every dispute that comes to you from your brothers who dwell in their cities — whether it regards differences of bloodguilt, law, commandment, statutes, or judgments — you are to warn them, so they will not incur guilt before the LORD and wrath will not come on you and your brothers. Do this, and you will not incur guilt.
Then Jehoiada made a covenant between himself, the king, and the people that they would be the LORD's people.
The goldsmiths and merchants made repairs between the upstairs room on the corner and the Sheep Gate.
Each[fn] day, one ox, six choice sheep, and some fowl were prepared for me. An abundance of all kinds of wine was provided every ten days. But I didn't demand the food allotted to the governor, because the burden on the people was so heavy.
a lying witness who gives false testimony,
and one who stirs up trouble among brothers.
Like an apricot[fn] tree among the trees of the forest,
so is my love among the young men.
I delight to sit in his shade,
and his fruit is sweet to my taste.
He will settle disputes among the nations
and provide arbitration for many peoples.
They will beat their swords into plows
and their spears into pruning knives.
Nation will not take up the sword against nation,
and they will never again train for war.
So now, residents of Jerusalem
and men of Judah,
please judge between me
and my vineyard.
You made a reservoir between the walls for the water of the ancient pool, but you did not look to the one who made it, or consider the one who created it long ago.
who burn with lust among the oaks,
under every green tree,
who slaughter children in the wadis
below the clefts of the rocks?
“Some of you will rebuild the ancient ruins;
you will restore the foundations laid long ago;
you will be called the repairer of broken walls,
the restorer of streets where people live.
But your iniquities are separating you
from your God,
and your sins have hidden his face from you
so that he does not listen.
Instead, if you really correct your ways and your actions, if you act justly toward one another,[fn]
“They will drink, stagger,[fn] and go out of their minds because of the sword I am sending among them.”
“Then you are to say to them, ‘This is what the LORD of Armies, the God of Israel, says: Drink, get drunk, and vomit. Fall down and never get up again, as a result of the sword I am sending among you.'
Then the city was broken into, and all the warriors fled. They left the city at night by way of the city gate between the two walls near the king's garden, though the Chaldeans surrounded the city. They made their way along the route to the Arabah.
Judah has gone into exile
following[fn] affliction and harsh slavery;
she lives among the nations
but finds no place to rest.
All her pursuers have overtaken her
in narrow places.
Zion stretches out her hands;
there is no one to comfort her.
The LORD has issued a decree against Jacob
that his neighbors should be his adversaries.
Jerusalem has become
something impure among them.
The likeness of the living creatures was like the appearance of blazing coals of fire or like torches. Fire was moving back and forth between the living creatures; it was bright, with lightning coming out of it.
“Take an iron plate and set it up as an iron wall between yourself and the city. Face it so that it is under siege, and besiege it. This will be a sign for the house of Israel.
He stretched out what appeared to be a hand and took me by the hair of my head. Then the Spirit lifted me up between earth and heaven and carried me in visions of God to Jerusalem, to the entrance of the inner gate that faces north, where the offensive statue that provokes jealousy was located.
So he brought me to the inner court of the LORD's house, and there were about twenty-five men at the entrance of the LORD's temple, between the portico and the altar, with their backs to the LORD's temple and their faces turned to the east. They were bowing to the east in worship of the sun.
“He doesn't lend at interest or for profit but keeps his hand from injustice and carries out true justice between men.
“I also gave them my Sabbaths to serve as a sign between me and them, so that they would know that I am the LORD who consecrates them.
“Keep my Sabbaths holy, and they will be a sign between me and you, so you may know that I am the LORD your God.”
“Her priests do violence to my instruction and profane my holy things. They make no distinction between the holy and the common, and they do not explain the difference between the clean and the unclean. They close their eyes to my Sabbaths, and I am profaned among them.
“ ‘As for you, my flock, the Lord GOD says this: Look, I am going to judge between one sheep and another, between the rams and goats.
“ ‘Therefore, this is what the Lord GOD says to them: See, I myself will judge between the fat sheep and the lean sheep.
“I will save my flock. They will no longer be prey, and I will judge between one sheep and another.
Each recess was 10½ feet long and 10½ feet deep, and there was a space of 8¾ feet[fn] between the recesses. The inner threshold of the gate on the temple side next to the gate's portico was 10½ feet.
The thickness of the outer wall of the side rooms was 8¾ feet. The free space between the side rooms of the temple
carved with cherubim and palm trees. There was a palm tree between each pair of cherubim. Each cherub had two faces:
He measured the temple complex on all four sides. It had a wall all around it, 875 feet long and 875 feet wide, to separate the holy from the common.
“They are to teach my people the difference between the holy and the common, and explain to them the difference between the clean and the unclean.
“Berothah, and Sibraim (which is between the border of Damascus and the border of Hamath), as far as Hazer-hatticon, which is on the border of Hauran.
“On the east side it will run between Hauran and Damascus, along the Jordan between Gilead and the land of Israel; you will measure from the northern border to the eastern sea.[fn] This will be the eastern side.
“Except for the Levitical property and the city property in the middle of the area belonging to the prince, the area between the territory of Judah and that of Benjamin will belong to the prince.
“Suddenly, another beast appeared, a second one, that looked like a bear. It was raised up on one side, with three ribs in its mouth between its teeth. It was told, ‘Get up! Gorge yourself on flesh.'
As I was observing, a male goat appeared, coming from the west across the surface of the entire earth without touching the ground. The goat had a conspicuous horn[fn] between his eyes.
I heard a human voice calling from the middle of the Ulai: “Gabriel, explain the vision to this man.”
“The shaggy goat represents the king of Greece, and the large horn between his eyes represents the first king.[fn]
“He will pitch his royal tents between the sea and[fn] the beautiful holy mountain, but he will meet his end with no one to help him.
Let the priests, the LORD's ministers,
weep between the portico and the altar.
Let them say,
“Have pity on your people, LORD,
and do not make your inheritance a disgrace,
an object of scorn among the nations.
Why should it be said among the peoples,
‘Where is their God? ' ”
Though you seem to soar[fn] like an eagle
and make your nest among the stars,
even from there I will bring you down.
This is the LORD's declaration.
He will settle disputes among many peoples
and provide arbitration for strong nations
that are far away.
They will beat their swords into plows
and their spears into pruning knives.
Nation will not take up the sword against nation,
and they will never again train for war.
Then the man standing among the myrtle trees explained, “They are the ones the LORD has sent to patrol the earth.”
They reported to the angel of the LORD standing among the myrtle trees, “We have patrolled the earth, and right now the whole earth is calm and quiet.”
Then I looked up and saw two women approaching with the wind in their wings. Their wings were like those of a stork, and they lifted up the basket between earth and sky.
“Yes, he will build the LORD's temple; he will bear royal splendor and will sit on his throne and rule. There will be a priest on his throne, and there will be peaceful counsel between the two of them.
Then I cut in two my second staff, Union, annulling the brotherhood between Judah and Israel.
“If someone asks him, ‘What are these wounds on your chest?'[fn] — then he will answer, ‘I received the wounds in the house of my friends.'
And you ask, “Why? ” Because even though the LORD has been a witness between you and the wife of your youth, you have acted treacherously against her. She was your marriage partner and your wife by covenant.
