no shrub of the field had yet grown on the land,[fn] and no plant of the field had yet sprouted, for the LORD God had not made it rain on the land, and there was no man to work the ground.

Both the man and his wife were naked, yet felt no shame.

“If you do what is right, won't you be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is for you, but you must rule over it.”

“I establish my covenant with you that never again will every creature be wiped out by floodwaters; there will never again be a flood to destroy the earth.”

“I will remember my covenant between me and you and all the living creatures: water will never again become a flood to destroy every creature.

Then Shem and Japheth took a cloak and placed it over both their shoulders, and walking backward, they covered their father's nakedness. Their faces were turned away, and they did not see their father naked.

The LORD said, “If they have begun to do this as one people all having the same language, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them.

Sarai was unable to conceive; she did not have a child.

So Pharaoh sent for Abram and said, “What have you done to me? Why didn't you tell me she was your wife?

But the land was unable to support them as long as they stayed together, for they had so many possessions that they could not stay together,

“Isn't the whole land before you? Separate from me: if you go to the left, I will go to the right; if you go to the right, I will go to the left.”

Abram continued, “Look, you have given me no offspring, so a slave born in[fn] my house will be my heir.”

Then the LORD said to Abram, “Know this for certain: Your offspring will be resident aliens for four hundred years in a land that does not belong to them and will be enslaved and oppressed.[fn]

Abram's wife, Sarai, had not borne any children for him, but she owned an Egyptian slave named Hagar.

The angel of the LORD said to her, “I will greatly multiply your offspring, and they will be too many to count.”

“Throughout your generations, every male among you is to be circumcised at eight days old ​— ​every male born in your household or purchased from any foreigner and not your offspring.

Sarah denied it. “I did not laugh,” she said, because she was afraid.

But he replied, “No, you did laugh.”

“What if there are fifty righteous people in the city? Will you really sweep it away instead of sparing the place for the sake of the fifty righteous people who are in it?

“Look, I've got two daughters who haven't been intimate with a man. I'll bring them out to you, and you can do whatever you want[fn] to them. However, don't do anything to these men, because they have come under the protection of my roof.”

So they got their father to drink wine that night, and the firstborn came and slept with her father; he did not know when she lay down or when she got up.

That night they again got their father to drink wine, and the younger went and slept with him; he did not know when she lay down or when she got up.

“Didn't he himself say to me, ‘She is my sister'? And she herself said, ‘He is my brother.' I did this with a clear conscience[fn] and clean[fn] hands.”

Abraham replied, “I thought, ‘There is absolutely no fear of God in this place. They will kill me because of my wife.'

Abimelech replied, “I don't know who did this thing. You didn't report anything to me, so I hadn't heard about it until today.”

Then he said, “Do not lay a hand on the boy or do anything to him. For now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your only son from me.”

and said, “By myself I have sworn,” this is the LORD's declaration: “Because you have done this thing and have not withheld your only son,

Now the girl was very beautiful, a virgin ​— ​no man had been intimate with her. She went down to the spring, filled her jug, and came up.

and said, “Blessed be the LORD, the God of my master Abraham, who has not withheld his kindness and faithfulness from my master. As for me, the LORD has led me on the journey to the house of my master's relatives.”

He moved from there and dug another, and they did not quarrel over it. He named it Rehoboth[fn] and said, “For now the LORD has made space for us, and we will be fruitful in the land.”

“You will not harm us, just as we have not harmed you but have done only what was good to you, sending you away in peace. You are now blessed by the LORD.”

“Suppose my father touches me. Then I will be revealed to him as a deceiver and bring a curse rather than a blessing on myself.”

He did not recognize him, because his hands were hairy like those of his brother Esau; so he blessed him.

When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he said, “Surely the LORD is in this place, and I did not know it.”

Laban answered, “It is not the custom in our country to give the younger daughter in marriage before the firstborn.

Jacob separated the lambs and made the flocks face the streaked sheep and the completely dark sheep in Laban's flocks. Then he set his own stock apart and didn't put them with Laban's sheep.

As for the weaklings of the flocks, he did not put out the branches. So it turned out that the weak sheep belonged to Laban and the stronger ones to Jacob.

And Jacob saw from Laban's face that his attitude toward him was not the same as before.

He said to them, “I can see from your father's face that his attitude toward me is not the same as before, but the God of my father has been with me.

“and that he has cheated me and changed my wages ten times. But God has not let him harm me.

“but you didn't even let me kiss my grandchildren and my daughters. You have acted foolishly.

“If you find your gods with anyone here, he will not live! Before our relatives, point out anything that is yours and take it.” Jacob did not know that Rachel had stolen the idols.

“I've been with you these twenty years. Your ewes and female goats have not miscarried, and I have not eaten the rams from your flock.

“You have said, ‘I will cause you to prosper, and I will make your offspring like the sand of the sea, too numerous to be counted.' ”

The young man did not delay doing this, because he was delighted with Jacob's daughter. Now he was the most important in all his father's family.

For their possessions were too many for them to live together, and because of their herds, the land where they stayed could not support them.

When his brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, they hated him and could not bring themselves to speak peaceably to him.

Then they took him and threw him into the pit. The pit was empty, without water.

He went back to his brothers and said, “The boy is gone! What am I going to do? ”[fn]

All his sons and daughters tried to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted. “No,” he said. “I will go down to Sheol to my son, mourning.” And his father wept for him.

But Onan knew that the offspring would not be his, so whenever he slept with his brother's wife, he released his semen on the ground so that he would not produce offspring for his brother.

So she took off her widow's clothes, veiled her face, covered herself, and sat at the entrance to Enaim, which is on the way to Timnah. For she saw that, though Shelah had grown up, she had not been given to him as a wife.

He asked the men of the place, “Where is the cult prostitute who was beside the road at Enaim? ”

“There has been no cult prostitute here,” they answered.

Judah recognized them and said, “She is more in the right[fn] than I, since I did not give her to my son Shelah.” And he did not know her intimately again.

He left all that he owned under Joseph's authority;[fn] he did not concern himself with anything except the food he ate.

Now Joseph was well-built and handsome.

But he refused. “Look,” he said to his master's wife, “with me here my master does not concern himself with anything in his house, and he has put all that he owns under my authority.[fn]

The warden did not bother with anything under Joseph's authority,[fn] because the LORD was with him, and the LORD made everything that he did successful.

“We had dreams,” they said to him, “but there is no one to interpret them.”

Then Joseph said to them, “Don't interpretations belong to God? Tell me your dreams.”

“For I was kidnapped from the land of the Hebrews, and even here I have done nothing that they should put me in the dungeon.”[fn]

Yet the chief cupbearer did not remember Joseph; he forgot him.

When morning came, he was troubled, so he summoned all the magicians of Egypt and all its wise men. Pharaoh told them his dreams, but no one could interpret them for him.

Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I have had a dream, and no one can interpret it. But I have heard it said about you that you can hear a dream and interpret it.”

“After them, seven other cows ​— ​weak, very sickly, and thin ​— ​came up. I've never seen such sickly ones as these in all the land of Egypt.

“The thin heads of grain swallowed the seven good ones. I told this to the magicians, but no one can tell me what it means.”

“The abundance in the land will not be remembered because of the famine that follows it, for the famine will be very severe.

“The food will be a reserve for the land during the seven years of famine that will take place in the land of Egypt. Then the country will not be wiped out by the famine.”

So Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Since God has made all this known to you, there is no one as discerning and wise as you are.

Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I am Pharaoh and no one will be able to raise his hand or foot in all the land of Egypt without your permission.”

So Joseph stored up grain in such abundance ​— ​like the sand of the sea ​— ​that he stopped measuring it because it was beyond measure.

But Jacob did not send Joseph's brother Benjamin with his brothers, for he thought, “Something might happen to him.”

Although Joseph recognized his brothers, they did not recognize him.

“We are all sons of one man. We are honest; your servants are not spies.”

Then they said to each other, “Obviously, we are being punished for what we did to our brother. We saw his deep distress when he pleaded with us, but we would not listen. That is why this trouble has come to us.”

Their father Jacob said to them, “It's me that you make childless. Joseph is gone, and Simeon is gone. Now you want to take Benjamin. Everything happens to me! ”

But Judah said to him, “The man specifically warned us, ‘You will not see me again unless your brother is with you.'

“But if you will not send him, we will not go, for the man said to us, ‘You will not see me again unless your brother is with you.' ”

“We have brought additional silver with us to buy food. We don't know who put our silver in the bags.”

They had not gone very far from the city when Joseph said to his steward, “Get up. Pursue the men, and when you overtake them, say to them, ‘Why have you repaid evil for good?

“What have you done? ” Joseph said to them. “Didn't you know that a man like me could uncover the truth by divination? ”

“One is gone from me ​— ​I said he must have been torn to pieces ​— ​and I have never seen him again.

Joseph could no longer keep his composure in front of all his attendants,[fn] so he called out, “Send everyone away from me! ” No one was with him when he revealed his identity to his brothers.

Joseph said to his brothers, “I am Joseph! Is my father still living? ” But they could not answer him because they were terrified in his presence.

“For the famine has been in the land these two years, and there will be five more years without plowing or harvesting.

Jacob said to Pharaoh, “My pilgrimage has lasted 130 years. My years have been few and hard, and they have not reached the years of my ancestors during their pilgrimages.”

But there was no food in the entire region, for the famine was very severe. The land of Egypt and the land of Canaan were exhausted by the famine.

“Why should we die here in front of you ​— ​both us and our land? Buy us and our land in exchange for food. Then we with our land will become Pharaoh's slaves. Give us seed so that we can live and not die, and so that the land won't become desolate.”

The only land he did not acquire belonged to the priests, for they had an allowance from Pharaoh. They ate from their allowance that Pharaoh gave them; therefore they did not sell their land.

So Joseph made it a law, still in effect today in the land of Egypt, that a fifth of the produce belongs to Pharaoh. Only the priests' land does not belong to Pharaoh.

Now his eyesight was poor because of old age; he could hardly[fn] see. Joseph brought them to him, and he kissed and embraced them.

But his father refused and said, “I know, my son, I know! He too will become a tribe,[fn] and he too will be great; nevertheless, his younger brother will be greater than he, and his offspring will become a populous nation.”[fn]

“The scepter will not depart from Judah

or the staff from between his feet

until he whose right it is comes[fn]

and the obedience of the peoples belongs to him.

A new king, who did not know about Joseph, came to power in Egypt.

The midwives, however, feared God and did not do as the king of Egypt had told them; they let the boys live.

But when she could no longer hide him, she got a papyrus basket for him and coated it with asphalt and pitch. She placed the child in it and set it among the reeds by the bank of the Nile.

“And I will give these people such favor with the Egyptians that when you go, you will not go empty-handed.

Moses answered, “What if they won't believe me and will not obey me but say, ‘The LORD did not appear to you'? ”

The LORD said to him, “Who placed a mouth on humans? Who makes a person mute or deaf, seeing or blind? Is it not I, the LORD?

Then the LORD's anger burned against Moses, and he said, “Isn't Aaron the Levite your brother? I know that he can speak well. And also, he is on his way now to meet you. He will rejoice when he sees you.

But Pharaoh responded, “Who is the LORD that I should obey him by letting Israel go? I don't know[fn] the LORD, and besides, I will not let Israel go.”

“But require the same quota of bricks from them as they were making before; do not reduce it. For they are slackers ​— ​that is why they are crying out, ‘Let us go and sacrifice to our God.'

The Israelite foremen saw that they were in trouble when they were told, “You cannot reduce your daily quota of bricks.”

“Ever since I went in to Pharaoh to speak in your name he has caused trouble for this people, and you haven't rescued your people at all.”

“I appeared to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob as God Almighty, but I was not known to them by my name ‘the LORD.'[fn]

Moses told this to the Israelites, but they did not listen to him because of their broken spirit and hard labor.

But Moses said in the LORD's presence, “If the Israelites will not listen to me, then how will Pharaoh listen to me, since I am such a poor speaker? ”[fn]

“Pharaoh will not listen to you, but I will put my hand into Egypt and bring the military divisions of my people the Israelites out of the land of Egypt by great acts of judgment.

However, Pharaoh's heart was hard, and he did not listen to them, as the LORD had said.

“Tell him: The LORD, the God of the Hebrews, has sent me to tell you: Let my people go, so that they may worship[fn] me in the wilderness. But so far you have not listened.

The fish in the Nile died, and the river smelled so bad the Egyptians could not drink water from it. There was blood throughout the land of Egypt.

“Tomorrow,” he answered.

Moses replied, “As you have said, so that you may know there is no one like the LORD our God,

But when Pharaoh saw there was relief, he hardened his heart and would not listen to them, as the LORD had said.

The magicians tried to produce gnats using their occult practices, but they could not. The gnats remained on people and animals.

“But on that day I will give special treatment to the land of Goshen, where my people are living; no flies will be there. This way you will know that I, the LORD, am in the land.

But Pharaoh hardened his heart this time also and did not let the people go.

The LORD did this the next day. All the Egyptian livestock died, but none among the Israelite livestock died.

The magicians could not stand before Moses because of the boils, for the boils were on the magicians as well as on all the Egyptians.

“For this time I am about to send all my plagues against you,[fn] your officials, and your people. Then you will know there is no one like me on the whole earth.

The only place it didn't hail was in the land of Goshen, where the Israelites were.

Moses said to him, “When I have left the city, I will spread out my hands to the LORD. The thunder will cease, and there will be no more hail, so that you may know the earth[fn] belongs to the LORD.

but the wheat and the spelt were not destroyed since they are later crops.[fn]

So Pharaoh's heart was hard, and he did not let the Israelites go, as the LORD had said through Moses.

The locusts went up over the entire land of Egypt and settled on the whole territory of Egypt. Never before had there been such a large number of locusts, and there never will be again.

But the LORD hardened Pharaoh's heart, and he did not let the Israelites go.

One person could not see another, and for three days they did not move from where they were. Yet all the Israelites had light where they lived.

“Even our livestock must go with us; not a hoof will be left behind because we will take some of them to worship the LORD our God. We will not know what we will use to worship the LORD until we get there.”

The LORD said to Moses, “Pharaoh will not listen to you, so that my wonders may be multiplied in the land of Egypt.”

“Do not eat any of it raw or cooked in boiling[fn] water, but only roasted over fire ​— ​its head as well as its legs and inner organs.

“The blood on the houses where you are staying will be a distinguishing mark for you; when I see the blood, I will pass over you. No plague will be among you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt.

“Do not eat anything leavened; eat unleavened bread in all your homes.”[fn]

“Take a cluster of hyssop, dip it in the blood that is in the basin, and brush the lintel and the two doorposts with some of the blood in the basin. None of you may go out the door of his house until morning.

During the night Pharaoh got up, he along with all his officials and all the Egyptians, and there was a loud wailing throughout Egypt because there wasn't a house without someone dead.

The people baked the dough they had brought out of Egypt into unleavened loaves, since it had no yeast; for when they were driven out of Egypt, they could not delay and had not prepared provisions for themselves.

The LORD said to Moses and Aaron, “This is the statute of the Passover: no foreigner may eat it.

“A temporary resident or hired worker may not eat the Passover.

“If an alien resides among you and wants to observe the LORD's Passover, every male in his household must be circumcised, and then he may participate;[fn] he will become like a native of the land. But no uncircumcised person may eat it.

“Unleavened bread is to be eaten for those seven days. Nothing leavened may be found among you, and no yeast may be found among you in all your territory.

The pillar of cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night never left its place in front of the people.

They came to Marah, but they could not drink the water at Marah because it was bitter ​— ​that is why it was named Marah.[fn]

He said, “If you will carefully obey the LORD your God, do what is right in his sight, pay attention to his commands, and keep all his statutes, I will not inflict any illnesses on you that I inflicted on the Egyptians. For I am the LORD who heals you.”

When they measured it by quarts,[fn] the person who gathered a lot had no surplus, and the person who gathered a little had no shortage. Each gathered as much as he needed to eat.

But they didn't listen to Moses; some people left part of it until morning, and it bred worms and stank. Therefore Moses was angry with them.

So they set it aside until morning as Moses commanded, and it didn't stink or have maggots in it.

“For six days you will gather it, but on the seventh day, the Sabbath, there will be none.”

The entire Israelite community left the Wilderness of Sin, moving from one place to the next according to the LORD's command. They camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink.

“What you're doing is not good,” Moses's father-in-law said to him.

Do not have other gods besides me.

Do not covet your neighbor's house. Do not covet your neighbor's wife, his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.

“If you make a stone altar for me, do not build it out of cut stones. If you use your chisel on it, you will defile it.

“But if the slave declares, ‘I love my master, my wife, and my children; I do not want to leave as a free man,'

“When a man sells his daughter as a concubine,[fn] she is not to leave as the male slaves do.

“If he takes an additional wife, he must not reduce the food, clothing, or marital rights of the first wife.

“However, if the slave can stand up after a day or two, the owner should not be punished[fn] because he is his owner's property.[fn]

“If a thief is caught in the act of breaking in, and he is beaten to death, no one is guilty of bloodshed.

“there must be an oath before the LORD between the two of them to determine whether or not he has taken his neighbor's property. Its owner must accept the oath, and the other man does not have to make restitution.

“If it was actually torn apart by a wild animal, he is to bring it as evidence; he does not have to make restitution for the torn carcass.

“If its owner is there with it, the man does not have to make restitution. If it was rented, the loss is covered by[fn] its rental price.

“If you lend silver to my people, to the poor person among you, you must not be like a creditor to him; you must not charge him interest.

“Be my holy people. You must not eat the meat of a mauled animal found in the field; throw it to the dogs.

“You must not follow a crowd in wrongdoing. Do not testify in a lawsuit and go along with a crowd to pervert justice.

“Stay far away from a false accusation. Do not kill the innocent and the just, because I will not justify the guilty.

“Pay strict attention to everything I have said to you. You must not invoke the names of other gods; they must not be heard on your lips.[fn]

“Observe the Festival of Unleavened Bread. As I commanded you, you are to eat unleavened bread for seven days at the appointed time in the month of Abib,[fn] because you came out of Egypt in that month. No one is to appear before me empty-handed.

“No woman will miscarry or be childless in your land. I will give you the full number of your days.

“I will not drive them out ahead of you in a single year; otherwise, the land would become desolate, and wild animals would multiply against you.

“They must not remain in your land, or else they will make you sin against me. If you serve their gods, it will be a snare for you.”

“Moses alone is to approach the LORD, but the others are not to approach, and the people are not to go up with him.”

“These must be worn by Aaron and his sons whenever they enter the tent of meeting or approach the altar to minister in the sanctuary area, so that they do not incur guilt and die. This is to be a permanent statute for Aaron and for his future descendants.

“They must eat those things by which atonement was made at the time of their ordination[fn] and consecration. An unauthorized person must not eat them, for these things are holy.

“You must not offer unauthorized incense on it, or a burnt or grain offering; you are not to pour a drink offering on it.

“When you take a census of the Israelites to register them, each of the men must pay a ransom for his life to the LORD as they are registered. Then no plague will come on them as they are registered.

“The wealthy may not give more and the poor may not give less than half a shekel when giving the contribution to the LORD to atone for[fn] your lives.

When the people saw that Moses delayed in coming down from the mountain, they gathered around Aaron and said to him, “Come, make gods[fn] for us who will go before us because this Moses, the man who brought us up from the land of Egypt ​— ​we don't know what has happened to him! ”

But Moses replied,

It's not the sound of a victory cry

and not the sound of a cry of defeat;

I hear the sound of singing!

“They said to me, ‘Make gods for us who will go before us because this Moses, the man who brought us up from the land of Egypt ​— ​we don't know what has happened to him! '

The LORD would speak with Moses face to face, just as a man speaks with his friend, then Moses would return to the camp. His assistant, the young man Joshua son of Nun, would not leave the inside of the tent.

“Then I will take my hand away, and you will see my back, but my face will not be seen.”

“You may redeem the firstborn of a donkey with a sheep, but if you do not redeem it, break its neck. You must redeem all the firstborn of your sons. No one is to appear before me empty-handed.

“For I will drive out nations before you and enlarge your territory. No one will covet your land when you go up three times a year to appear before the LORD your God.

Moses was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights; he did not eat food or drink water. He wrote the Ten Commandments, the words of the covenant, on the tablets.

Moses was unable to enter the tent of meeting because the cloud rested on it, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle.

If the cloud was not taken up, they did not set out until the day it was taken up.

“You may present them to the LORD as an offering of firstfruits, but they are not to be offered on the altar as a pleasing aroma.

“This is a permanent statute throughout your generations, wherever you live: you must not eat any fat or any blood.”

“But if he cannot afford two turtledoves or two young pigeons, he may bring two quarts[fn] of fine flour[fn] as an offering for his sin. He must not put olive oil or frankincense on it, for it is a sin offering.

“If someone sins and without knowing it violates any of the LORD's commands concerning anything prohibited, he is guilty, and he will bear his iniquity.

“Tell the Israelites: You are not to eat any fat of an ox, a sheep, or a goat.

“Wherever you live, you must not eat the blood of any bird or animal.

“Do not go outside the entrance to the tent of meeting for seven days, until the time your days of ordination are completed, because it will take seven days to ordain you.[fn]

Then Moses said to Aaron and his sons Eleazar and Ithamar, “Do not let your hair hang loose and do not tear your clothes, or else you will die, and the LORD will become angry with the whole community. However, your brothers, the whole house of Israel, may weep over the fire that the LORD caused.

“Why didn't you eat the sin offering in the sanctuary area? For it is especially holy, and he has assigned it to you to take away the guilt of the community and make atonement for them before the LORD.

“pigs, though they have divided hooves,

do not chew the cud ​— ​they are unclean for you.

“But these are to be abhorrent to you: everything in the seas or streams that does not have fins and scales among all the swarming things and other living creatures in the water.

“Do not become contaminated by any creature that swarms; do not become unclean or defiled by them.

“She will continue in purification from her bleeding for thirty-three days. She must not touch any holy thing or go into the sanctuary until completing her days of purification.

“But when the priest examines it, if there is no white hair in it, and it is not beneath the skin but is faded, the priest will quarantine him seven days.

“But when the priest examines it, if there is no white hair in the spot and it is not beneath the skin but is faded, the priest will quarantine him seven days.

“When the priest examines the scaly condition, if it does not appear to be deeper than the skin, and there is no black hair in it, the priest will quarantine the person with the scaly condition for seven days.

“The priest will examine the scaly outbreak on the seventh day, and if it has not spread on the skin and does not appear to be deeper than the skin, the priest is to pronounce the person clean. He is to wash his clothes, and he will be clean.

“the priest is to examine the person. If the scaly outbreak has spread on the skin, the priest does not need to look for yellow hair; the person is unclean.

“When a woman has a discharge of her blood for many days, though it is not the time of her menstruation, or if she has a discharge beyond her period, she will be unclean all the days of her unclean discharge, as she is during the days of her menstruation.

“You must keep the Israelites from their uncleanness, so that they do not die by defiling my tabernacle that is among them.

The LORD said to Moses, “Tell your brother Aaron that he may not come whenever he wants into the holy place behind the curtain in front of the mercy seat on the ark or else he will die, because I appear in the cloud above the mercy seat.

“He is to put the incense on the fire before the LORD, so that the cloud of incense covers the mercy seat that is over the testimony, or else he will die.

“No one may be in the tent of meeting from the time he enters to make atonement in the most holy place until he leaves after he has made atonement for himself, his household, and the whole assembly of Israel.

“You are not to violate the intimacy that belongs to your father and mother.[fn] She is your mother; you must not have sexual intercourse with her.

“Do not turn to worthless idols or make cast images of gods for yourselves; I am the LORD your God.

“Do not strip your vineyard bare or gather its fallen grapes. Leave them for the poor and the resident alien; I am the LORD your God.

“Do not swear falsely by my name, profaning the name of your God; I am the LORD.

“Do not go about spreading slander among your people; do not jeopardize[fn] your neighbor's life; I am the LORD.

“Do not take revenge or bear a grudge against members of your community, but love your neighbor as yourself; I am the LORD.

“You are not to eat anything with blood in it.[fn] You are not to practice divination or witchcraft.

“Do not debase[fn] your daughter by making her a prostitute, or the land will be prostituted and filled with depravity.

“Do not turn to mediums[fn] or consult spiritists,[fn] or you will be defiled by them; I am the LORD your God.

“If a man marries[fn] a woman and her mother, it is depraved. Both he and they must be burned, so that there will be no depravity among you.

“You must not have sexual intercourse with your mother's sister or your father's sister, for it is exposing one's own blood relative; both people will bear their iniquity.

“The priest who is highest among his brothers, who has had the anointing oil poured on his head and has been ordained[fn] to wear the clothes, must not dishevel his hair[fn] or tear his clothes.

“No descendant of the priest Aaron who has a defect is to come near to present the food offerings to the LORD. He has a defect and is not to come near to present the food of his God.

“But because he has a defect, he must not go near the curtain or approach the altar. He is not to desecrate my holy places, for I am the LORD who sets them apart.”

“No man of Aaron's descendants who has a skin disease[fn] or a discharge is to eat from the holy offerings until he is clean. Whoever touches anything made unclean by a dead person or by a man who has an emission of semen,

“the man who touches any of these will remain unclean until evening and is not to eat from the holy offerings unless he has bathed his body with water.

“When a man presents a fellowship sacrifice to the LORD to fulfill a vow or as a freewill offering from the herd or flock, it has to be unblemished to be acceptable; there must be no defect in it.

“It is to be eaten on the same day. Do not let any of it remain until morning; I am the LORD.

“You are not to reap what grows by itself from your crop, or harvest the grapes of your untended vines. It is to be a year of complete rest for the land.

“If it is not redeemed by the end of a full year, then the house in the walled city is permanently transferred to its purchaser throughout his generations. It is not to be released on the Jubilee.

“I will give peace to the land, and you will lie down with nothing to frighten you. I will remove dangerous animals from the land, and no sword will pass through your land.

“As long as it lies desolate, it will have the rest it did not have during your Sabbaths when you lived there.

“He may not replace it or make a substitution for it, either good for bad, or bad for good. But if he does substitute one animal for another, both that animal and its substitute will be holy.

“If a person consecrates to the LORD a field he has purchased that is not part of his inherited landholding,

“Nothing that a man permanently sets apart to the LORD from all he owns, whether a person, an animal, or his inherited landholding, can be sold or redeemed; everything set apart is especially holy to the LORD.

“He is not to inspect whether it is good or bad, and he is not to make a substitution for it. But if he does make a substitution, both the animal and its substitute will be holy; they cannot be redeemed.”

But the Levites were not registered with them by their ancestral tribe.

“The Levites are to camp around the tabernacle of the testimony and watch over it, so that no wrath will fall on the Israelite community.”

But Nadab and Abihu died in the LORD's presence when they presented unauthorized fire before the LORD in the Wilderness of Sinai, and they had no sons. So Eleazar and Ithamar served as priests under the direction of Aaron their father.

“then the man is to bring his wife to the priest. He is also to bring an offering for her of two quarts[fn] of barley flour. He is not to pour oil over it or put frankincense on it because it is a grain offering of jealousy, a grain offering for remembrance to draw attention to guilt.

“You must not cut his hair[fn] throughout the time of his vow of consecration. He may be holy until the time is completed during which he consecrates himself to the LORD; he is to let the hair of his head grow long.

But he did not give any to the Kohathites, since their responsibility was service related to the holy objects carried on their shoulders.

“From the Israelites, I have given the Levites exclusively to Aaron and his sons to perform the work for the Israelites at the tent of meeting and to make atonement on their behalf, so that no plague will come against the Israelites when they approach the sanctuary.”

“But at fifty years old he is to retire from his service in the work and no longer serve.

But there were some men who were unclean because of a human corpse, so they could not observe the Passover on that day. These men came before Moses and Aaron the same day

“But the man who is ceremonially clean, is not on a journey, and yet fails to observe the Passover is to be cut off from his people, because he did not present the LORD's offering at its appointed time. That man will bear the consequences of his sin.

“Then I will come down and speak with you there. I will take some of the Spirit who is on you and put the Spirit on them. They will help you bear the burden of the people, so that you do not have to bear it by yourself.

The LORD answered Moses, “Is the LORD's arm weak?[fn] Now you will see whether or not what I have promised will happen to you.”

Two men had remained in the camp, one named Eldad and the other Medad; the Spirit rested on them ​— ​they were among those listed, but had not gone out to the tent ​— ​and they prophesied in the camp.

“I speak with him directly,[fn]

openly, and not in riddles;

he sees the form of the LORD.

So why were you not afraid to speak against my servant Moses? ”

The LORD answered Moses, “If her father had merely spit in her face, wouldn't she remain in disgrace for seven days? Let her be confined outside the camp for seven days; after that she may be brought back in.”

But the men who had gone up with him responded, “We can't attack the people because they are stronger than we are! ”

“none of the men who have seen my glory and the signs I performed in Egypt and in the wilderness, and have tested me these ten times and did not obey me,

But Moses responded, “Why are you going against the LORD's command? It won't succeed.

“The Amalekites and Canaanites are right in front of you, and you will fall by the sword. The LORD won't be with you, since you have turned from following him.”

Moses sent for Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, but they said, “We will not come!

“Furthermore, you didn't bring us to a land flowing with milk and honey or give us an inheritance of fields and vineyards. Will you gouge out the eyes of these men? We will not come! ”

Then Moses said, “This is how you will know that the LORD sent me to do all these things and that it was not of my own will:

just as the LORD commanded him through Moses. It was to be a reminder for the Israelites that no unauthorized person outside the lineage of Aaron should approach to offer incense before the LORD and become like Korah and his followers.

“They are to perform duties for you and for the whole tent. They must not come near the sanctuary equipment or the altar; otherwise, both they and you will die.

“You are to guard the sanctuary and the altar so that wrath may not fall on the Israelites again.

The LORD told Aaron, “You will not have an inheritance in their land; there will be no portion among them for you. I am your portion and your inheritance among the Israelites.

“This is the legal statute that the LORD has commanded: Instruct the Israelites to bring you an unblemished red cow that has no defect and has never been yoked.

There was no water for the community, so they assembled against Moses and Aaron.

But the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, “Because you did not trust me to demonstrate my holiness in the sight of the Israelites, you will not bring this assembly into the land I have given them.”

“Please let us travel through your land. We won't travel through any field or vineyard, or drink any well water. We will travel the King's Highway; we won't turn to the right or the left until we have traveled through your territory.' ”

Edom refused to allow Israel to travel through their territory, and Israel turned away from them.

The people spoke against God and Moses: “Why have you led us up from Egypt to die in the wilderness? There is no bread or water, and we detest this wretched food! ”

“Let us travel through your land. We won't go into the fields or vineyards. We won't drink any well water. We will travel the King's Highway until we have traveled through your territory.”

So Balaam got up the next morning and said to Balak's officials, “Go back to your land, because the LORD has refused to let me go with you.”

The angel of the LORD went ahead and stood in a narrow place where there was no room to turn to the right or the left.

But the donkey said, “Am I not the donkey you've ridden all your life until today? Have I ever treated you this way before? ”

“No,” he replied.

The angel of the LORD asked him, “Why have you beaten your donkey these three times? Look, I came out to oppose you, because I consider what you are doing to be evil.[fn]

Balak asked Balaam, “Did I not send you an urgent summons? Why didn't you come to me? Am I really not able to reward you? ”

Then Balak said to him, “Please come with me to another place where you can see them. You will only see the outskirts of their camp; you won't see all of them. From there, put a curse on them for me.”

He considers no disaster for Jacob;

he sees no trouble for Israel.[fn]

The LORD their God is with them,

and there is rejoicing over the King among them.

But Balaam answered him, “Didn't I tell you: Whatever the LORD says, I must do? ”

Since Balaam saw that it pleased the LORD to bless Israel, he did not go to seek omens as on previous occasions, but turned[fn] toward the wilderness.

I see him, but not now;

I perceive him, but not near.

A star will come from Jacob,

and a scepter will arise from Israel.

He will smash the forehead[fn] of Moab

and strike down[fn] all the Shethites.[fn]

“Phinehas son of Eleazar, son of Aaron the priest, has turned back my wrath from the Israelites because he was zealous among them with my zeal,[fn] so that I did not destroy the Israelites in my zeal.

The sons of Korah, however, did not die.)

Zelophehad son of Hepher had no sons ​— ​only daughters. The names of Zelophehad's daughters were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.

But among them there was not one of those who had been registered by Moses and the priest Aaron when they registered the Israelites in the Wilderness of Sinai.

“Our father died in the wilderness, but he was not among Korah's followers, who gathered together against the LORD. Instead, he died because of his own sin, and he had no sons.

“who will go out before them and come back in before them, and who will bring them out and bring them in, so that the LORD's community won't be like sheep without a shepherd.”

“but keep alive for yourselves all the young females who have not gone to bed with a man.

and 32,000 people, all the females who had not gone to bed with a man.

They traveled from Alush and camped at Rephidim, where there was no water for the people to drink.

“But if anyone suddenly pushes a person without hostility or throws any object at him without malicious intent

“and the avenger of blood finds him outside the border of his city of refuge and kills him, the avenger will not be guilty of bloodshed,

“Do not defile the land where you live, for bloodshed defiles the land, and there can be no atonement for the land because of the blood that is shed on it, except by the blood of the person who shed it.

“Do not show partiality when deciding a case; listen to small and great alike. Do not be intimidated by anyone, for judgment belongs to God. Bring me any case too difficult for you, and I will hear it.

“But you were not willing to go up. You rebelled against the command of the LORD your God.

“But in spite of this you did not trust the LORD your God,

“Your children, who you said would be plunder, your sons who[fn] don't yet know good from evil, will enter there. I will give them the land, and they will take possession of it.

“But the LORD said to me, ‘Tell them: Don't go up and fight, for I am not with you to keep you from being defeated by your enemies.'

“When you returned, you wept before the LORD, but he didn't listen to your requests or pay attention to you.

“For the LORD your God has blessed you in all the work of your hands. He has watched over your journey through this immense wilderness. The LORD your God has been with you these past forty years, and you have lacked nothing.'

“But King Sihon of Heshbon would not let us travel through his land, for the LORD your God had made his spirit stubborn and his heart obstinate in order to hand him over to you, as has now taken place.

“There was no city that was inaccessible to[fn] us, from Aroer on the rim of the Arnon Valley, along with the city in the valley, even as far as Gilead. The LORD our God gave everything to us.

“We captured all his cities at that time. There wasn't a city that we didn't take from them: sixty cities, the entire region of Argob, the kingdom of Og in Bashan.

“But the LORD was angry with me because of you[fn] and would not listen to me. The LORD said to me, ‘That's enough! Do not speak to me again about this matter.

“You must not add anything to what I command you or take anything away from it, so that you may keep the commands of the LORD your God I am giving you.

“Then the LORD spoke to you from the fire. You kept hearing the sound of the words, but didn't see a form; there was only a voice.

“Diligently watch yourselves ​— ​because you did not see any form on the day the LORD spoke to you out of the fire at Horeb ​— ​

“There you will worship man-made gods of wood and stone, which cannot see, hear, eat, or smell.

“He will not leave you, destroy you, or forget the covenant with your ancestors that he swore to them by oath, because the LORD your God is a compassionate God.

“You were shown these things so that you would know that the LORD is God; there is no other besides him.

“Today, recognize and keep in mind that the LORD is God in heaven above and on earth below; there is no other.

Someone could flee there who committed manslaughter, killing his neighbor accidentally without previously hating him. He could flee to one of these cities and stay alive:

“At that time I was standing between the LORD and you to report the word[fn] of the LORD to you, because you were afraid of the fire and did not go up the mountain. And he said:

“Do not have other gods besides me.

“Do not covet your neighbor's wife or desire your neighbor's house, his field, his male or female slave, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.

“Be careful to do as the LORD your God has commanded you; you are not to turn aside to the right or the left.

“When the LORD your God brings you into the land he swore to your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob that he would give you ​— ​a land with large and beautiful cities that you did not build,

“Do not test the LORD your God as you tested him at Massah.

“You will be blessed above all peoples; there will be no infertile male or female among you or your livestock.

“He will hand their kings over to you, and you will wipe out their names under heaven. No one will be able to stand against you; you will annihilate them.

“He humbled you by letting you go hungry; then he gave you manna to eat, which you and your ancestors had not known, so that you might learn that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD.

“a land where you will eat food without shortage, where you will lack nothing; a land whose rocks are iron and from whose hills you will mine copper.

“He led you through the great and terrible wilderness with its poisonous[fn] snakes and scorpions, a thirsty land where there was no water. He brought water out of the flint rock for you.

“Like the nations the LORD is about to destroy before you, you will perish if you do not obey the LORD your God.

“When I went up the mountain to receive the stone tablets, the tablets of the covenant the LORD made with you, I stayed on the mountain forty days and forty nights. I did not eat food or drink water.

“I fell down like the first time in the presence of the LORD for forty days and forty nights; I did not eat food or drink water because of all the sin you committed, doing what was evil in the LORD's sight and angering him.

“When the LORD sent you from Kadesh-barnea, he said, ‘Go up and possess the land I have given you'; you rebelled against the command of the LORD your God. You did not believe or obey him.

“For this reason, Levi does not have a portion or inheritance like his brothers; the LORD is his inheritance, as the LORD your God told him.

“Understand today that it is not your children who experienced or saw the discipline of the LORD your God:

His greatness, strong hand, and outstretched arm;

“Then the LORD's anger will burn against you. He will shut the sky, and there will be no rain; the land will not yield its produce, and you will perish quickly from the good land the LORD is giving you.

“No one will be able to stand against you; the LORD your God will put fear and dread of you in all the land where you set foot, as he has promised you.

“and a curse, if you do not obey the commands of the LORD your God and you turn aside from the path I command you today by following other gods you have not known.

“Aren't these mountains across the Jordan, beyond the western road in the land of the Canaanites, who live in the Arabah, opposite Gilgal, near the oaks[fn] of Moreh?

“You will rejoice before the LORD your God ​— ​you, your sons and daughters, your male and female slaves, and the Levite who is within your city gates, since he has no portion or inheritance among you.

“and that sign or wonder he has promised you comes about, but he says, ‘Let's follow other gods,' which you have not known, ‘and let's worship them,'

“If your brother, the son of your mother,[fn] or your son or daughter, or the wife you embrace, or your closest friend secretly entices you, saying, ‘Let's go and worship other gods' ​— ​which neither you nor your ancestors have known,

“do not yield to him or listen to him. Show him no pity,[fn] and do not spare him or shield him.

“that wicked men have sprung up among you, led the inhabitants of their city astray, and said, ‘Let's go and worship other gods,' which you have not known,

“You are to gather all its spoil in the middle of the city square and completely burn the city and all its spoil for the LORD your God. The city is to remain a mound of ruins forever; it is not to be rebuilt.

“You are sons of the LORD your God; do not cut yourselves or make a bald spot on your head[fn] on behalf of the dead,

“but you may not eat anything that does not have fins and scales ​— ​it is unclean for you.

“Do not neglect the Levite within your city gates, since he has no portion or inheritance among you.

“Then the Levite, who has no portion or inheritance among you, the resident alien, the fatherless, and the widow within your city gates may come, eat, and be satisfied. And the LORD your God will bless you in all the work of your hands that you do.

“This is how to cancel debt: Every creditor[fn] is to cancel what he has lent his neighbor. He is not to collect anything from his neighbor or brother, because the LORD's release of debts has been proclaimed.

“There will be no poor among you, however, because the LORD is certain to bless you in the land the LORD your God is giving you to possess as an inheritance ​— ​

“When the LORD your God blesses you as he has promised you, you will lend to many nations but not borrow; you will rule many nations, but they will not rule you.

“When you set him free, do not send him away empty-handed.

“But if your slave says to you, ‘I don't want to leave you,' because he loves you and your family, and is well off with you,

“Consecrate to the LORD your God every firstborn male produced by your herd and flock. You are not to put the firstborn of your oxen to work or shear the firstborn of your flock.

“No yeast is to be found anywhere in your territory for seven days, and none of the meat you sacrifice in the evening of the first day is to remain until morning.

“All your males are to appear three times a year before the LORD your God in the place he chooses: at the Festival of Unleavened Bread, the Festival of Weeks, and the Festival of Shelters. No one is to appear before the LORD empty-handed.

“Do not deny justice or show partiality to anyone. Do not accept a bribe, for it blinds the eyes of the wise and twists the words of the righteous.

“The one condemned to die is to be executed on the testimony of two or three witnesses. No one is to be executed on the testimony of a single witness.

“You must abide by the instruction they give you and the verdict they announce to you. Do not turn to the right or the left from the decision they declare to you.

“Then all the people will hear about it, be afraid, and no longer behave arrogantly.

“you are to appoint over you the king the LORD your God chooses. Appoint a king from your brothers. You are not to set a foreigner over you, or one who is not of your people.

“The Levitical priests, the whole tribe of Levi, will have no portion or inheritance with Israel. They will eat the LORD's food offerings; that is their[fn][fn] inheritance.

“This is what you requested from the LORD your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly when you said, ‘Let us not continue to hear the voice of the LORD our God or see this great fire any longer, so that we will not die! '

“You may say to yourself, ‘How can we recognize a message the LORD has not spoken? '

“Otherwise, the avenger of blood in the heat of his anger[fn] might pursue the one who committed manslaughter, overtake him because the distance is great, and strike him dead. Yet he did not deserve to die,[fn] since he did not previously hate his neighbor.

“In this way, innocent blood will not be shed, and you will not become guilty of bloodshed in the land the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance.

“One witness cannot establish any iniquity or sin against a person, whatever that person has done. A fact must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.

“The officers are to address the army, ‘Has any man built a new house and not dedicated it? Let him leave and return home. Otherwise, he may die in battle and another man dedicate it.

“When you lay siege to a city for a long time, fighting against it in order to capture it, do not destroy its trees by putting an ax to them, because you can get food from them. Do not cut them down. Are trees of the field human, to come under siege by you?

“If a murder victim is found lying in a field in the land the LORD your God is giving you to possess, and it is not known who killed him,

“The elders of the city nearest to the victim are to get a young cow that has not been yoked or used for work.

“They will declare, ‘Our hands did not shed this blood; our eyes did not see it.

“Then if you are not satisfied with her, you are to let her go where she wants, but you must not sell her or treat her as merchandise,[fn] because you have humiliated her.

“you are not to leave his corpse on the tree overnight but are to bury him that day, for anyone hung on a tree is under God's curse. You must not defile the land the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance.

“If you see your brother's donkey or ox fallen down on the road, do not ignore it; help him lift it up.

“Do not plow with an ox and a donkey together.

“take the two of them out to the gate of that city and stone them to death ​— ​the young woman because she did not cry out in the city and the man because he has violated his neighbor's fiancée. You must purge the evil from you.

“Do nothing to the young woman, because she is not guilty of an offense deserving death. This case is just like one in which a man attacks his neighbor and murders him.

“A man is not to marry his father's wife; he must not violate his father's marriage bed.[fn]

“No man whose testicles have been crushed or whose penis has been cut off may enter the LORD's assembly.

“Yet the LORD your God would not listen to Balaam, but he turned the curse into a blessing for you because the LORD your God loves you.

“If there is a man among you who is unclean because of a bodily emission during the night, he must go outside the camp; he may not come anywhere inside the camp.

“For the LORD your God walks throughout your camp to protect you and deliver your enemies to you; so your encampments must be holy. He must not see anything indecent among you or he will turn away from you.

“No Israelite woman is to be a cult prostitute, and no Israelite man is to be a cult prostitute.

“Do not charge your brother interest on silver, food, or anything that can earn interest.

“But if you refrain from making a vow, it will not be counted against you as sin.

“When you enter your neighbor's standing grain, you may pluck heads of grain with your hand, but do not put a sickle to your neighbor's grain.

“When a man takes a bride, he must not go out with the army or be liable for any duty. He is free to stay at home for one year, so that he can bring joy to the wife he has married.

“When you make a loan of any kind to your neighbor, do not enter his house to collect what he offers as security.

“Do not oppress a hired worker who is poor and needy, whether one of your Israelite brothers or one of the resident aliens in a town[fn] in your land.

“When you reap the harvest in your field, and you forget a sheaf in the field, do not go back to get it. It is to be left for the resident alien, the fatherless, and the widow, so that the LORD your God may bless you in all the work of your hands.

“When brothers live on the same property[fn] and one of them dies without a son, the wife of the dead man may not marry a stranger outside the family. Her brother-in-law is to take her as his wife, have sexual relations with her, and perform the duty of a brother-in-law for her.

“then his sister-in-law will go up to him in the sight of the elders, remove his sandal from his foot, and spit in his face. Then she will declare, ‘This is what is done to a man who will not build up his brother's house.'

“Do not have differing weights in your bag, one heavy and one light.

“They met you along the way and attacked all your stragglers from behind when you were tired and weary. They did not fear God.

“Then you will say in the presence of the LORD your God:

I have taken the consecrated portion out of my house; I have also given it to the Levites, resident aliens, fatherless children, and widows, according to all the commands you gave me. I have not violated or forgotten your commands.

“Build an altar of stones there to the LORD your God ​— ​do not use any iron tool on them.

“‘Anyone who does not put the words of this law into practice is cursed.'

And all the people will say, ‘Amen! '

“The LORD will open for you his abundant storehouse, the sky, to give your land rain in its season and to bless all the work of your hands. You will lend to many nations, but you will not borrow.

“Your corpses will be food for all the birds of the sky and the wild animals of the earth, with no one to scare them away.

“so that at noon you will grope as a blind person gropes in the dark. You will not be successful in anything you do. You will only be oppressed and robbed continually, and no one will help you.

“The LORD will bring you and your king that you have appointed to a nation neither you nor your ancestors have known, and there you will worship other gods, of wood and stone.

“You will father sons and daughters, but they will not remain yours, because they will be taken prisoner.

“All these curses will come, pursue, and overtake you until you are destroyed, since you did not obey the LORD your God and keep the commands and statutes he gave you.

“Because you didn't serve the LORD your God with joy and a cheerful heart, even though you had an abundance of everything,

“The LORD will bring a nation from far away, from the ends of the earth, to swoop down on you like an eagle, a nation whose language you won't understand,

“Though you were as numerous as the stars of the sky, you will be left with only a few people, because you did not obey the LORD your God.

“Then the LORD will scatter you among all peoples from one end of the earth to the other, and there you will worship other gods, of wood and stone, which neither you nor your ancestors have known.

“The LORD will take you back in ships to Egypt by a route that I said you would never see again. There you will sell yourselves to your enemies as male and female slaves, but no one will buy you.”

“Yet to this day the LORD has not given you a mind to understand, eyes to see, or ears to hear.

“They began to serve other gods, bowing in worship to gods they had not known ​— ​gods that the LORD had not permitted them to worship.

“It is not in heaven so that you have to ask, ‘Who will go up to heaven, get it for us, and proclaim it to us so that we may follow it? '

“The LORD is the one who will go before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or abandon you. Do not be afraid or discouraged.”

“Then their children who do not know the law will listen and learn to fear the LORD your God as long as you live in the land you are crossing the Jordan to possess.”

“My anger will burn against them on that day; I will abandon them and hide my face from them so that they will become easy prey. Many troubles and afflictions will come to them. On that day they will say, ‘Haven't these troubles come to us because our God is no longer with us? '

The Rock ​— ​his work is perfect;

all his ways are just.

A faithful God, without bias,

he is righteous and true.

The LORD alone led him,

with no help from a foreign god.

They sacrificed to demons, not God,

to gods they had not known,

new gods that had just arrived,

which your ancestors did not fear.

He said, “I will hide my face from them;

I will see what will become of them,

for they are a perverse generation —

unfaithful children.

Israel is a nation lacking sense

with no understanding at all.

But their “rock” is not like our Rock,

as even our enemies concede.

“Is it not stored up with me,

sealed up in my vaults?

“See now that I alone am he;

there is no God but me.

I bring death and I give life;

I wound and I heal.

No one can rescue anyone from my power.

“Although from a distance you will view the land that I am giving the Israelites, you will not go there.”
