So the LORD God said to the serpent:
Because you have done this,
you are cursed more than any livestock
and more than any wild animal.
You will move on your belly
and eat dust all the days of your life.
I will put hostility between you and the woman,
and between your offspring and her offspring.[fn]
He will strike your head,
and you will strike his heel.
“If you do what is right, won't you be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is for you, but you must rule over it.”
“So now you are cursed, alienated from the ground that opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood you have shed.[fn]
“But I will establish my covenant with you, and you will enter the ark with your sons, your wife, and your sons' wives.
“Take with you every kind of food that is eaten; gather it as food for you and for them.”
Then the LORD said to Noah, “Enter the ark, you and all your household, for I have seen that you alone are righteous before me in this generation.
“Isn't the whole land before you? Separate from me: if you go to the left, I will go to the right; if you go to the right, I will go to the left.”
After Lot had separated from him, the LORD said to Abram, “Look from the place where you are. Look north and south, east and west,
The angel of the LORD said to her, “You have conceived and will have a son. You will name him Ishmael,[fn] for the LORD has heard your cry of affliction.
God also said to Abraham, “As for you, you and your offspring after you throughout their generations are to keep my covenant.
“You could not possibly do such a thing: to kill the righteous with the wicked, treating the righteous and the wicked alike. You could not possibly do that! Won't the Judge of the whole earth do what is just? ”
But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night and said to him, “You are about to die because of the woman you have taken, for she is a married woman.”[fn]
“Now return the man's wife, for he is a prophet, and he will pray for you and you will live. But if you do not return her, know that you will certainly die, you and all who are yours.”
“Swear to me by God here and now, that you will not break an agreement with me or with my children and descendants. As I have been loyal to you, so you will be loyal to me and to the country where you are a resident alien.”
Then he said, “Do not lay a hand on the boy or do anything to him. For now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your only son from me.”
“My lord, listen to me. Land worth four hundred shekels of silver — what is that between you and me? Bury your dead.”
“Today when I came to the spring, I prayed: LORD, God of my master Abraham, if only you will make my journey successful!
“and who responds to me, ‘Drink, and I'll draw water for your camels also' — let her be the woman the LORD has appointed for my master's son.
“You will not harm us, just as we have not harmed you but have done only what was good to you, sending you away in peace. You are now blessed by the LORD.”
Then Isaac said to Jacob, “Please come closer so I can touch you, my son. Are you really my son Esau or not? ”
The LORD was standing there beside him,[fn] saying, “I am the LORD, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your offspring the land on which you are lying.
“Give me my wives and my children that I have worked for, and let me go. You know how hard I have worked for you.”
So Jacob said to him, “You know how I have served you and how your herds have fared with me.
Then Laban answered Jacob, “The daughters are my daughters; the children, my children; and the flocks, my flocks! Everything you see is mine! But what can I do today for these daughters of mine or for the children they have borne?
“This mound is a witness and the marker is a witness that I will not pass beyond this mound to you, and you will not pass beyond this mound and this marker to do me harm.
“You have said, ‘I will cause you to prosper, and I will make your offspring like the sand of the sea, too numerous to be counted.' ”
Judah replied, “Let her keep the items for herself; otherwise we will become a laughingstock. After all, I did send this young goat, but you couldn't find her.”
Then Judah said to his father Israel, “Send the boy with me. We will be on our way so that we may live and not die — neither we, nor you, nor our dependents.
But Judah approached him and said, “My lord, please let your servant speak personally to my lord. Do not be angry with your servant, for you are like Pharaoh.
“Then you said to your servants, ‘If your younger brother does not come down with you, you will not see me again.'
“You can settle in the land of Goshen and be near me — you, your children, and your grandchildren, your flocks, your herds, and all you have.
“There I will sustain you, for there will be five more years of famine. Otherwise, you, your household, and everything you have will become destitute.” '
“You are also commanded to tell them, ‘Do this: Take wagons from the land of Egypt for your dependents and your wives and bring your father here.
Then Israel said to Joseph, “I'm ready to die now because I have seen your face and you are still alive! ”
The next day he went out and saw two Hebrews fighting. He asked the one in the wrong, “Why are you attacking your neighbor? ”[fn]
“Who made you a commander and judge over us? ” the man replied. “Are you planning to kill me as you killed the Egyptian? ”
Then Moses became afraid and thought, “What I did is certainly known.”
“Do not come closer,” he said. “Remove the sandals from your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.”
“They will listen to what you say. Then you, along with the elders of Israel, must go to the king of Egypt and say to him: The LORD, the God of the Hebrews, has met with us. Now please let us go on a three-day trip into the wilderness so that we may sacrifice to the LORD our God.
“He will speak to the people for you. He will serve as a mouth for you, and you will serve as God to him.
“And you will say to Pharaoh: This is what the LORD says: Israel is my firstborn son.
“You must say whatever I command you; then Aaron your brother must declare it to Pharaoh so that he will let the Israelites go from his land.
“But if you refuse to let my people go, then tomorrow I will bring locusts into your territory.
Moses responded, “You must also let us have[fn] sacrifices and burnt offerings to prepare for the LORD our God.
“All these officials of yours will come down to me and bow before me, saying: Get out, you and all the people who follow you.[fn] After that, I will get out.” And he went out from Pharaoh's presence fiercely angry.
“As for you, lift up your staff, stretch out your hand over the sea, and divide it so that the Israelites can go through the sea on dry ground.
When Moses's father-in-law saw everything he was doing for them he asked, “What is this you're doing for the people? Why are you alone sitting as judge, while all the people stand around you from morning until evening? ”
“You will certainly wear out both yourself and these people who are with you, because the task is too heavy for you. You can't do it alone.
“Now listen to me; I will give you some advice, and God be with you. You be the one to represent the people before God and bring their cases to him.
“But you should select from all the people able men, God-fearing, trustworthy, and hating dishonest profit. Place them over the people as commanders of thousands, hundreds, fifties, and tens.
Moses responded to the LORD, “The people cannot come up Mount Sinai, since you warned us: Put a boundary around the mountain and consecrate it.”
And the LORD replied to him, “Go down and come back with Aaron. But the priests and the people must not break through to come up to the LORD, or he will break out in anger against them.”
but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. You must not do any work — you, your son or daughter, your male or female servant, your livestock, or the resident alien who is within your city gates.
“You speak to us, and we will listen,” they said to Moses, “but don't let God speak to us, or we will die.”
Then he said to Moses, “Go up to the LORD, you and Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and seventy of Israel's elders, and bow in worship at a distance.
“You are to command the Israelites to bring you pure oil from crushed olives for the light, in order to keep the lamp burning regularly.
“Have your brother Aaron, with his sons, come to you from the Israelites to serve me as priest — Aaron, his sons Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar.
“You are to instruct all the skilled artisans,[fn] whom I have filled with a spirit of wisdom, to make Aaron's garments for consecrating him to serve me as priest.
“Tell the Israelites: You must observe my Sabbaths, for it is a sign between me and you throughout your generations, so that you will know that I am the LORD who consecrates you.
“Don't be enraged, my lord,” Aaron replied. “You yourself know that the people are intent on evil.
The LORD spoke to Moses: “Go up from here, you and the people you brought up from the land of Egypt, to the land I promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, saying: I will give it to your offspring.
Moses said to the LORD, “Look, you have told me, ‘Lead this people up,' but you have not let me know whom you will send with me. You said, ‘I know you by name, and you have also found favor with me.'
“If your presence does not go,” Moses responded to him, “don't make us go up from here.
Then he said, “My Lord, if I have indeed found favor with you, my Lord, please go with us (even though this is a stiff-necked people), forgive our iniquity and our sin, and accept us as your own possession.”
“Observe what I command you today. I am going to drive out before you the Amorites, Canaanites, Hethites, Perizzites, Hivites,[fn] and Jebusites.
“You and your sons are not to drink wine or beer when you enter the tent of meeting, or else you will die; this is a permanent statute throughout your generations.
“But you and your sons and your daughters may eat the breast of the presentation offering and the thigh of the contribution in any ceremonially clean place, because these portions have been assigned to you and your children from the Israelites' fellowship sacrifices.
“You and Aaron are to register those who are twenty years old or more by their military divisions — everyone who can serve in Israel's army.[fn]
“Appoint the Levites over the tabernacle of the testimony, all its furnishings, and everything in it. They are to transport the tabernacle and all its articles, take care of it, and camp around it.
“But if you have gone astray while under your husband's authority, if you have defiled yourself and a man other than your husband has slept with you' —
“If you are going to treat me like this, please kill me right now if I have found favor with you, and don't let me see my misery[fn] anymore.”
The LORD answered Moses, “Bring me seventy men from Israel known to you as elders and officers of the people. Take them to the tent of meeting and have them stand there with you.
“Then I will come down and speak with you there. I will take some of the Spirit who is on you and put the Spirit on them. They will help you bear the burden of the people, so that you do not have to bear it by yourself.
But Moses replied, “I'm in the middle of a people with six hundred thousand foot soldiers, yet you say, ‘I will give them meat, and they will eat for a month.'
“They will tell it to the inhabitants of this land. They have heard that you, LORD, are among these people, how you, LORD, are seen face to face, how your cloud stands over them, and how you go before them in a pillar of cloud by day and in a pillar of fire by night.
“Therefore, it is you and all your followers who have conspired against the LORD! As for Aaron, who is he[fn] that you should complain about him? ”
So Moses told Korah, “You and all your followers are to appear before the LORD tomorrow — you, they, and Aaron.
“Each of you is to take his firepan, place incense on it, and present his firepan before the LORD — 250 firepans. You and Aaron are each to present your firepan also.”
The LORD said to Aaron, “You, your sons, and your ancestral family[fn] will be responsible for iniquity against the sanctuary. You and your sons will be responsible for iniquity involving your priesthood.
“But also bring your relatives with you from the tribe of Levi, your ancestral tribe, so they may join you and assist you and your sons in front of the tent of the testimony.
“But you and your sons will carry out your priestly responsibilities for everything concerning the altar and for what is inside the curtain, and you will do that work. I am giving you the work of the priesthood as a gift,[fn] but an unauthorized person who comes near the sanctuary will be put to death.”
“You are to eat it as a most holy offering.[fn] Every male may eat it; it is to be holy to you.
“Take the staff and assemble the community. You and your brother Aaron are to speak to the rock while they watch, and it will yield its water. You will bring out water for them from the rock and provide drink for the community and their livestock.”
Moses sent messengers from Kadesh to the king of Edom, “This is what your brother Israel says, ‘You know all the hardships that have overtaken us.
“You, the priest Eleazar, and the family heads of the community are to take a count of what was captured, people and animals.
“The LORD was angry with me also because of you and said, ‘You will not enter there either.
“I commanded Joshua at that time: Your own eyes have seen everything the LORD your God has done to these two kings. The LORD will do the same to all the kingdoms you are about to enter.
“Lord GOD, you have begun to show your greatness and your strong hand to your servant, for what god is there in heaven or on earth who can perform deeds and mighty acts like yours?
“but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. Do not do any work — you, your son or daughter, your male or female slave, your ox or donkey, any of your livestock, or the resident alien who lives within your city gates, so that your male and female slaves may rest as you do.
“Go near and listen to everything the LORD our God says. Then you can tell us everything the LORD our God tells you; we will listen and obey.'
“But you stand here with me, and I will tell you every command — the statutes and ordinances — you are to teach them, so that they may follow them in the land I am giving them to possess.'
“Do this so that you may fear the LORD your God all the days of your life by keeping all his statutes and commands I am giving you, your son, and your grandson, and so that you may have a long life.
“the great trials that you saw, the signs and wonders, the strong hand and outstretched arm, by which the LORD your God brought you out. The LORD your God will do the same to all the peoples you fear.
“Listen, Israel: Today you are about to cross the Jordan to enter and drive out nations greater and stronger than you, with large cities fortified to the heavens.
“The people are strong and tall, the descendants of the Anakim. You know about them and you have heard it said about them, ‘Who can stand up to the sons of Anak? '
“You are not going to take possession of their land because of your righteousness or your integrity. Instead, the LORD your God will drive out these nations before you because of their wickedness, in order to fulfill the promise he swore to your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
“You are to eat them in the presence of the LORD your God at the place the LORD your God chooses — you, your son and daughter, your male and female slave, and the Levite who is within your city gates. Rejoice before the LORD your God in everything you do,
“When the LORD your God annihilates the nations before you, which you are entering to take possession of, and you drive them out and live in their land,
“If your brother, the son of your mother,[fn] or your son or daughter, or the wife you embrace, or your closest friend secretly entices you, saying, ‘Let's go and worship other gods' — which neither you nor your ancestors have known,
“You may spend the silver on anything you want: cattle, sheep, goats, wine, beer, or anything you desire. You are to feast there in the presence of the LORD your God and rejoice with your family.
“When the LORD your God blesses you as he has promised you, you will lend to many nations but not borrow; you will rule many nations, but they will not rule you.
“Each year you and your family are to eat it before the LORD your God in the place the LORD chooses.
“Rejoice before the LORD your God in the place where he chooses to have his name dwell — you, your son and daughter, your male and female slave, the Levite within your city gates, as well as the resident alien, the fatherless, and the widow among you.
“Rejoice during your festival — you, your son and daughter, your male and female slave, as well as the Levite, the resident alien, the fatherless, and the widow within your city gates.
“Though these nations you are about to drive out listen to fortune-tellers and diviners, the LORD your God has not permitted you to do this.
“You must purge from yourselves the guilt of shedding innocent blood, for you will be doing what is right in the LORD's sight.
“They met you along the way and attacked all your stragglers from behind when you were tired and weary. They did not fear God.
“You, the Levites, and the resident aliens among you will rejoice in all the good things the LORD your God has given you and your household.
“The LORD will open for you his abundant storehouse, the sky, to give your land rain in its season and to bless all the work of your hands. You will lend to many nations, but you will not borrow.
“The LORD will make pestilence cling to you until he has exterminated you from the land you are entering to possess.
“The LORD will bring you and your king that you have appointed to a nation neither you nor your ancestors have known, and there you will worship other gods, of wood and stone.
“The resident alien among you will rise higher and higher above you, while you sink lower and lower.
“He will lend to you, but you won't lend to him. He will be the head, and you will be the tail.
“They will besiege you within all your city gates until your high and fortified walls, that you trust in, come down throughout your land. They will besiege you within all your city gates throughout the land the LORD your God has given you.
“Then the LORD will scatter you among all peoples from one end of the earth to the other, and there you will worship other gods, of wood and stone, which neither you nor your ancestors have known.
“I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you today that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Choose life so that you and your descendants may live,
Moses then summoned Joshua and said to him in the sight of all Israel, “Be strong and courageous, for you will go with[fn] this people into the land the LORD swore to give to their ancestors. You will enable them to take possession of it.
The LORD said to Moses, “You are about to rest with your ancestors, and these people will soon prostitute themselves with the foreign gods of the land they are entering. They will abandon me and break the covenant I have made with them.
The LORD commissioned Joshua son of Nun, “Be strong and courageous, for you will bring the Israelites into the land I swore to them, and I will be with you.”
How happy you are, Israel!
Who is like you,
a people saved by the LORD?
He is the shield that protects you,
the sword you boast in.
Your enemies will cringe before you,
and you will tread on their backs.[fn]
“Moses my servant is dead. Now you and all the people prepare to cross over the Jordan to the land I am giving the Israelites.
“Be strong and courageous, for you will distribute the land I swore to their ancestors to give them as an inheritance.
“you should tell them, ‘The water of the Jordan was cut off in front of the ark of the LORD's covenant. When it crossed the Jordan, the Jordan's water was cut off.' Therefore these stones will always be a memorial for the Israelites.”
The commander of the LORD's army said to Joshua, “Remove the sandals from your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy.” And Joshua did that.
“March around the city with all the men of war, circling the city one time. Do this for six days.
Joshua was now old, advanced in age, and the LORD said to him, “You have become old, advanced in age, but a great deal of the land remains to be possessed.
The descendants of Judah approached Joshua at Gilgal, and Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said to him, “You know what the LORD promised Moses the man of God at Kadesh-barnea about you and me.
“Now give me this hill country the LORD promised me on that day, because you heard then that the Anakim are there, as well as large fortified cities. Perhaps the LORD will be with me and I will drive them out as the LORD promised.”
“because the hill country will be yours also. It is a forest; clear it and its outlying areas will be yours. You can also drive out the Canaanites, even though they have iron chariots and are strong.”
“I will gladly go with you,” she said, “but you will receive no honor on the road you are about to take, because the LORD will sell Sisera to a woman.” So Deborah got up and went with Barak to Kedesh.
When Barak arrived in pursuit of Sisera, Jael went out to greet him and said to him, “Come and I will show you the man you are looking for.” So he went in with her, and there was Sisera lying dead with a tent peg through his temple!
Then he said to him, “If I have found favor with you, give me a sign that you are speaking with me.
Zebah and Zalmunna said, “Get up and strike us down yourself, for a man is judged by his strength.” So Gideon got up, killed Zebah and Zalmunna, and took the crescent ornaments that were on the necks of their camels.
Then the Israelites said to Gideon, “Rule over us, you as well as your sons and your grandsons, for you delivered us from the power of Midian.”
“Now tonight, you and the troops with you, come and wait in ambush in the countryside.
When Gaal saw the troops, he said to Zebul, “Look, troops are coming down from the mountaintops! ” But Zebul said to him, “The shadows of the mountains look like men to you.”
But the Israelites said, “We have sinned. Deal with us as you see fit; only rescue us today! ”
Jephthah sent messengers to the king of the Ammonites, asking, “What do you have against me that you have come to fight me in my land? ”
“The LORD God of Israel has now driven out the Amorites before his people Israel, and will you now force us out?
“Now are you any better than Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab? Did he ever contend with Israel or fight against them?
“I have not sinned against you, but you are doing me wrong by fighting against me. Let the LORD who is the judge decide today between the Israelites and the Ammonites.”
The angel of the LORD appeared to the woman and said to her, “Although you are unable to conceive and have no children, you will conceive and give birth to a son.
“for indeed, you will conceive and give birth to a son. You must never cut his hair,[fn] because the boy will be a Nazirite to God from birth, and he will begin to save Israel from the power of the Philistines.”
“He said to me, ‘You will conceive and give birth to a son. Therefore, do not drink wine or beer, and do not eat anything unclean, because the boy will be a Nazirite to God from birth until the day of his death.' ”
So Manoah got up and followed his wife. When he came to the man, he asked, “Are you the man who spoke to my wife? ”
“I am,” he said.
But his father and mother said to him, “Can't you find a young woman among your relatives or among any of our people? Must you go to the uncircumcised Philistines for a wife? ”
But Samson told his father, “Get her for me. She's the right one for me.”
He became very thirsty and called out to the LORD, “You have accomplished this great victory through your servant. Must I now die of thirst and fall into the hands of the uncircumcised? ”
They said to him, “Look, you are old, and your sons do not walk in your ways. Therefore, appoint a king to judge us the same as all the other nations have.”
As they were going down to the edge of the city, Samuel said to Saul, “Tell the servant to go on ahead of us, but you stay for a while, and I'll reveal the word of God to you.” So the servant went on.
Samuel took the flask of oil, poured it out on Saul's head, kissed him, and said, “Hasn't the LORD anointed you ruler over his inheritance?[fn]
and Samuel asked, “What have you done? ”
Saul answered, “When I saw that the troops were deserting me and you didn't come within the appointed days and the Philistines were gathering at Michmash,
He warned the Kenites, “Since you showed kindness to all the Israelites when they came out of Egypt, go on and leave! Get away from the Amalekites, or I'll sweep you away with them.” So the Kenites withdrew from the Amalekites.
When Samuel came to him, Saul said, “May the LORD bless you. I have carried out the LORD's instructions.”
Samuel continued, “Although you once considered yourself unimportant, haven't you become the leader of the tribes of Israel? The LORD anointed you king over Israel
The LORD said to Samuel, “How long are you going to mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him as king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and go. I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem because I have selected for myself a king from his sons.”
He said to David, “Am I a dog that you come against me with sticks? ”[fn] Then he cursed David by his gods.
David said to the Philistine, “You come against me with a sword, spear, and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the LORD of Armies, the God of the ranks of Israel — you have defied him.
Saul then ordered his servants, “Speak to David in private and tell him, ‘Look, the king is pleased with you, and all his servants love you. Therefore, you should become the king's son-in-law.' ”
Saul sent agents to David's house to watch for him and kill him in the morning. But his wife Michal warned David, “If you don't escape tonight, you will be dead tomorrow! ”
Then Saul became angry with Jonathan and shouted, “You son of a perverse and rebellious woman! Don't I know that you are siding with Jesse's son to your own shame and to the disgrace of your mother?[fn]
David went to the priest Ahimelech at Nob. Ahimelech was afraid to meet David, so he said to him, “Why are you alone and no one is with you? ”
Saul asked him, “Why did you and Jesse's son conspire against me? You gave him bread and a sword and inquired of God for him, so he could rise up against me and wait in ambush, as is the case today.”
But the king said, “You will die, Ahimelech — you and your father's whole family! ”
So the king said to Doeg, “Go and execute the priests! ” So Doeg the Edomite went and executed the priests himself. On that day, he killed eighty-five men who wore linen ephods.
“Stay with me. Don't be afraid, for the one who wants to take my life wants to take your life. You will be safe with me.”
saying, “Don't be afraid, for my father Saul will never lay a hand on you. You yourself will be king over Israel, and I'll be your second-in-command. Even my father Saul knows it is true.”
“Look, my father! Look at the corner of your robe in my hand, for I cut it off, but I didn't kill you. Recognize[fn] that I've committed no crime or rebellion. I haven't sinned against you even though you are hunting me down to take my life.
“Who has the king of Israel come after? What are you chasing after? A dead dog? A single flea?
and said to David, “You are more righteous than I, for you have done what is good to me though I have done what is evil to you.
“You yourself have told me today what good you did for me: when the LORD handed me over to you, you didn't kill me.
“Then say this: ‘Long life to you,[fn] and peace to you, peace to your family, and peace to all that is yours.
“Now consider carefully[fn] what you should do, because there is certain to be trouble for our master and his entire family. He is such a worthless fool nobody can talk to him! ”
“May your discernment be blessed, and may you be blessed. Today you kept me from participating in bloodshed and avenging myself by my own hand.
Then David shouted to the troops and to Abner son of Ner, “Aren't you going to answer, Abner? ”
“Who are you who calls to the king? ” Abner asked.
David called to Abner, “You're a man, aren't you? Who in Israel is your equal? So why didn't you protect your lord the king when one of the people came to destroy him?
At that time, the Philistines gathered their military units into one army to fight against Israel. So Achish said to David, “You know, of course, that you and your men must march out in the army[fn] with me.”
But the woman said to him, “You surely know what Saul has done, how he has cut off the mediums and spiritists from the land. Why are you setting a trap for me to get me killed? ”
When the woman saw Samuel, she screamed, and then she asked Saul, “Why did you deceive me? You are Saul! ”
“The LORD will also hand Israel over to the Philistines along with you. Tomorrow you and your sons will be with me,[fn] and the LORD will hand Israel's army over to the Philistines.”
Achish answered David, “I'm convinced that you are as reliable as an angel of God. But the Philistine commanders have said, ‘He must not go into battle with us.'
“So get up early in the morning, you and your masters' servants who came with you.[fn] When you've all gotten up early, go as soon as it's light.”
Then David said to him, “Who do you belong to? Where are you from? ”
“I'm an Egyptian, the slave of an Amalekite man,” he said. “My master abandoned me when I got sick three days ago.
David asked him, “Where have you come from? ”
He replied to him, “I've escaped from the Israelite camp.”
Abner said to him, “Turn to your right or left, seize one of the young soldiers, and take whatever you can get from him.” But Asahel would not stop chasing him.
“You know that Abner son of Ner came to deceive you and to find out about your military activities[fn] and everything you're doing.”
“Even while Saul was king over us, you were the one who led us out to battle and brought us back. The LORD also said to you, ‘You will shepherd my people Israel, and you will be ruler over Israel.' ”
“Go to my servant David and say, ‘This is what the LORD says: Are you to build me a house to dwell in?
This is why you are great, Lord GOD. There is no one like you, and there is no God besides you, as all we have heard confirms.
Lord GOD, you are God; your words are true, and you have promised this good thing to your servant.
Now, please bless your servant's house so that it will continue before you forever. For you, Lord GOD, have spoken, and with your blessing your servant's house will be blessed forever.
There was a servant of Saul's family named Ziba. They summoned him to David, and the king said to him, “Are you Ziba? ”
“I am your servant,” he replied.
“Don't be afraid,” David said to him, “since I intend to show you kindness for the sake of your father Jonathan. I will restore to you all your grandfather Saul's fields, and you will always eat meals at my table.”
“You, your sons, and your servants are to work the ground for him, and you are to bring in the crops so your master's grandson will have food to eat. But Mephibosheth, your master's grandson, is always to eat at my table.” Now Ziba had fifteen sons and twenty servants.
When it was reported to David, “Uriah didn't go home,” David questioned Uriah, “Haven't you just come from a journey? Why didn't you go home? ”
“You acted in secret, but I will do this before all Israel and in broad daylight.' ”[fn]
and he asked Amnon, “Why are you, the king's son, so miserable every morning? Won't you tell me? ”
Amnon replied, “I'm in love with Tamar, my brother Absalom's sister.”
“Where could I ever go with my humiliation? And you — you would be like one of the outrageous fools in Israel! Please, speak to the king, for he won't keep me from you.”
He would get up early and stand beside the road leading to the city gate. Whenever anyone had a grievance to bring before the king for settlement, Absalom called out to him and asked, “What city are you from? ” If he replied, “Your servant is from one of the tribes of Israel,”
The king said to Ittai of Gath, “Why are you also going with us? Go back and stay with the new king since you're both a foreigner and an exile from your homeland.
The king also said to the priest Zadok, “Look,[fn] return to the city in peace and your two sons with you: your son Ahimaaz and Abiathar's son Jonathan.
“The LORD has paid you back for all the blood of the house of Saul in whose place you became king, and the LORD has handed the kingdom over to your son Absalom. Look, you are in trouble because you're a man of bloodshed! ”
“and bring all the people back to you. When everyone returns except the man you're looking for, all[fn] the people will be at peace.”
So Hushai came to Absalom, and Absalom told him, “Ahithophel offered this proposal. Should we carry out his proposal? If not, what do you say? ”
Hushai continued, “You know your father and his men. They are warriors and are desperate like a wild bear robbed of her cubs. Your father is an experienced soldier who won't spend the night with the people.
“You must not go! ” the people pleaded. “If we have to flee, they will not pay any attention to us. Even if half of us die, they will not pay any attention to us because you are worth[fn] ten thousand of us. Therefore, it is better if you support us from the city.”
“If I had jeopardized my own[fn] life — and nothing is hidden from the king — you would have abandoned me.”
Joab replied to him, “You are not the man to take good news today. You may do it another day, but today you aren't taking good news, because the king's son is dead.”
So he won over[fn] all the men of Judah, and they unanimously sent word to the king: “Come back, you and all your servants.”
The king said to him, “Why keep on speaking about these matters of yours? I hereby declare: you and Ziba are to divide the land.”
The king said to Barzillai, “Cross over with me, and I'll provide for you[fn] at my side in Jerusalem.”
The king said to Amasa, “Summon the men of Judah to me within three days and be here yourself.”
So David said to Abishai, “Sheba son of Bichri will do more harm to us than Absalom. Take your lord's soldiers and pursue him, or he will find fortified cities and elude us.”[fn]
When he had come near her, the woman asked, “Are you Joab? ”
“I am,” he replied.
“Listen to the words of your servant,” she said to him.
He answered, “I'm listening.”
“I am one of the peaceful and faithful in Israel, but you're trying to destroy a city that is like a mother in Israel. Why would you devour the LORD's inheritance? ”
But his father had never once infuriated him by asking, “Why did you do that? ” In addition, he was quite handsome and was born after Absalom.
She replied, “My lord, you swore to your servant by the LORD your God, ‘Your son Solomon is to become king after me, and he is the one who is to sit on my throne.'
“My lord the king,” Nathan said, “did you say, ‘Adonijah is to become king after me, and he is the one who is to sit on my throne'?
“You also know what Joab son of Zeruiah did to me and what he did to the two commanders of Israel's army, Abner son of Ner and Amasa son of Jether. He murdered them in a time of peace to avenge blood shed in war. He spilled that blood on his own waistband and on the sandals of his feet.[fn]
“So don't let him go unpunished, for you are a wise man. You know how to deal with him to bring his gray head down to Sheol with blood.”
“You know the kingship was mine,” he said. “All Israel expected me to be king, but then the kingship was turned over to my brother, for the LORD gave it to him.
King Solomon answered his mother, “Why are you requesting Abishag the Shunammite for Adonijah? Since he is my elder brother, you might as well ask the kingship for him, for the priest Abiathar, and for Joab son of Zeruiah.”[fn]
The king said to the priest Abiathar, “Go to your fields in Anathoth. Even though you deserve to die, I will not put you to death today, since you carried the ark of the Lord GOD in the presence of my father David and you suffered through all that my father suffered.”
The king also said, “You yourself know all the evil that you did to my father David. Therefore, the LORD has brought back your evil on your head,
And Solomon replied, “You have shown great and faithful love to your servant, my father David, because he walked before you in faithfulness, righteousness, and integrity.[fn] You have continued this great and faithful love for him by giving him a son to sit on his throne, as it is today.
“LORD my God, you have now made your servant king in my father David's place. Yet I am just a youth with no experience in leadership.[fn]
“I will therefore do what you have asked. I will give you a wise and understanding heart, so that there has never been anyone like you before and never will be again.
The king replied, “This woman says, ‘This is my son who is alive, and your son is dead,' but that woman says, ‘No, your son is dead, and my son is alive.' ”
“You know my father David was not able to build a temple for the name of the LORD his God. This was because of the warfare all around him until the LORD put his enemies under his feet.
“Therefore, command that cedars from Lebanon be cut down for me. My servants will be with your servants, and I will pay your servants' wages according to whatever you say, for you know that not a man among us knows how to cut timber like the Sidonians.”
“My servants will bring the logs down from Lebanon to the sea, and I will make them into rafts to go by sea to the place you indicate. I will break them apart there, and you can take them away. You then can meet my needs by providing my household with food.”
“Yet you are not the one to build it;
instead, your son, your own offspring,
will build it for my name.”
He said:
LORD God of Israel,
there is no God like you
in heaven above or on earth below,
who keeps the gracious covenant
with your servants who walk before you
with all their heart.
Hear the petition of your servant
and your people Israel,
which they pray toward this place.
May you hear in your dwelling place in heaven.
May you hear and forgive.
may you hear in heaven and act.
May you judge your servants,
condemning the wicked man by bringing
what he has done on his own head
and providing justice for the righteous
by rewarding him according to his righteousness.
may you hear in heaven
and forgive the sin of your people Israel.
May you restore them to the land
you gave their ancestors.
may you hear in heaven, your dwelling place,
and may you forgive, act, and give to everyone
according to all their ways, since you know each heart,
for you alone know every human heart,
may you hear in heaven, your dwelling place,
and do according to all the foreigner asks.
Then all peoples of earth will know your name,
to fear you as your people Israel do
and to know that this temple I have built
bears your name.
For you, Lord GOD, have set them apart as your inheritance
from all peoples of the earth,
as you spoke through your servant Moses
when you brought our ancestors out of Egypt.
As for you, if you walk before me as your father David walked, with a heart of integrity and in what is right, doing everything I have commanded you, and if you keep my statutes and ordinances,
But Pharaoh asked him, “What do you lack here with me for you to want to go back to your own country? ”
“Nothing,” he replied, “but please let me leave.”
“I will appoint you, and you will reign as king over all you want, and you will be king over Israel.
“Your father made our yoke harsh. You, therefore, lighten your father's harsh service and the heavy yoke he put on us, and we will serve you.”
The young men who had grown up with him told him, “This is what you should say to this people who said to you, ‘Your father made our yoke heavy, but you, make it lighter on us! ' This is what you should tell them: ‘My little finger is thicker than my father's waist!
He followed the man of God and found him sitting under an oak tree. He asked him, “Are you the man of God who came from Judah? ”
“I am,” he said.
Then he cried out to the LORD and said, “LORD my God, have you also brought tragedy on the widow I am staying with by killing her son? ”
Then the woman said to Elijah, “Now I know you are a man of God and the LORD's word from your mouth is true.”
While Obadiah was walking along the road, Elijah suddenly met him. When Obadiah recognized him, he fell facedown and said, “Is it you, my lord Elijah? ”
He replied, “I have not ruined Israel, but you and your father's family have, because you have abandoned the LORD's commands and followed the Baals.
At the time for offering the evening sacrifice, the prophet Elijah approached the altar and said, “LORD, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, today let it be known that you are God in Israel and I am your servant, and that at your word I have done all these things.
“Answer me, LORD! Answer me so that this people will know that you, the LORD, are God and that you have turned their hearts back.”
Then he said to his servant, “Go up and look toward the sea.”
So he went up, looked, and said, “There's nothing.”
Seven times Elijah said, “Go back.”
So Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, “May the gods punish me and do so severely if I don't make your life like the life of one of them by this time tomorrow! ”
He entered a cave there and spent the night.
Suddenly, the word of the LORD came to him, and he said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah? ”
When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave.
Suddenly, a voice came to him and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah? ”
He told him, “Because you did not listen to the LORD, mark my words: When you leave me, a lion will kill you.” When he left him, a lion attacked and killed him.
The prophet said to him, “This is what the LORD says: ‘Because you released from your hand the man I had set apart for destruction, it will be your life in place of his life and your people in place of his people.' ”
Then his wife Jezebel came to him and said to him, “Why are you so upset that you refuse to eat? ”
Then his wife Jezebel said to him, “Now, exercise your royal power over Israel. Get up, eat some food, and be happy. For I will give you the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite.”
“Tell him, ‘This is what the LORD says: Have you murdered and also taken possession? ' Then tell him, ‘This is what the LORD says: In the place where the dogs licked up Naboth's blood, the dogs will also lick up your blood! ' ”
The messenger who went to call Micaiah instructed him, “Look, the words of the prophets are unanimously favorable for the king. So let your words be like theirs, and speak favorably.”
Micaiah replied, “You will soon see when you go to hide in an inner chamber on that day.”
But the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, “I will disguise myself and go into battle, but you wear your royal attire.” So the king of Israel disguised himself and went into battle.
They replied, “A man came to meet us and said, ‘Go back to the king who sent you and declare to him, “This is what the LORD says: Is it because there is no God in Israel that you're sending these men to inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron? Therefore, you will not get up from your sickbed; you will certainly die.” ' ”
One of the wives of the sons of the prophets cried out to Elisha, “Your servant, my husband, has died. You know that your servant feared the LORD. Now the creditor is coming to take my two children as his slaves.”
She went and told the man of God, and he said, “Go sell the oil and pay your debt; you and your sons can live on the rest.”
Elisha said, “At this time next year you will have a son in your arms.”
Then she said, “No, my lord. Man of God, do not lie to your servant.”
But he said, “Why go to him today? It's not a New Moon or a Sabbath.”
She replied, “It's all right.”
Elisha replied, “Don't kill them. Do you kill those you have captured with your sword or your bow? Set food and water in front of them so they can eat and drink and go to their master.”
Then the captain, the king's right-hand man,[fn] responded to the man of God, “Look, even if the LORD were to make windows in heaven, could this really happen? ”
Elisha announced, “You will in fact see it with your own eyes, but you won't eat any of it.”
Elisha said to the woman whose son he had restored to life, “Get ready, you and your household, and go live as a resident alien wherever you can. For the LORD has announced a seven-year famine, and it has already come to the land.”
Jehu said to Bidkar his aide, “Pick him up and throw him on the plot of ground belonging to Naboth the Jezreelite. For remember when you and I were riding side by side behind his father Ahab, and the LORD uttered this pronouncement against him:
“You have indeed defeated Edom, and you have become overconfident.[fn] Enjoy your glory and stay at home. Why should you stir up such trouble that you fall — you and Judah with you? ”
“Say this to King Hezekiah of Judah: ‘Don't let your God, on whom you rely, deceive you by promising that Jerusalem will not be handed over to the king of Assyria.
“Look, you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all the countries: They completely destroyed them. Will you be rescued?
Then Hezekiah prayed before the LORD:
LORD God of Israel, enthroned between the cherubim, you are God — you alone — of all the kingdoms of the earth. You made the heavens and the earth.
Now, LORD our God, please save us from his power so that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you, LORD, are God — you alone.
In those days Hezekiah became terminally ill. The prophet Isaiah son of Amoz came and said to him, “This is what the LORD says: ‘Set your house in order, for you are about to die; you will not recover.' ”
“Even previously when Saul was king, you were leading Israel out to battle and bringing us back. The LORD your God also said to you, ‘You will shepherd my people Israel, and you will be ruler over my people Israel.' ”
“Go to David my servant and say, ‘This is what the LORD says: You are not the one to build me a house to dwell in.
“but God said to me, ‘You are not to build a house for my name because you are a man of war and have shed blood.'
Yours, LORD, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the splendor and the majesty, for everything in the heavens and on earth belongs to you. Yours, LORD, is the kingdom, and you are exalted as head over all.
Riches and honor come from you, and you are the ruler of everything. Power and might are in your hand, and it is in your hand to make great and to give strength to all.
And Solomon said to God, “You have shown great and faithful love to my father David, and you have made me king in his place.
We will cut logs from Lebanon, as many as you need, and bring them to you as rafts by sea to Joppa. You can then take them up to Jerusalem.
“Yet, you are not the one to build the temple,
but your son, your own offspring,
will build the temple for my name.”
Hear the petitions of your servant
and your people Israel,
which they pray toward this place.
May you hear in your dwelling place in heaven.
May you hear and forgive.
may you hear in heaven and act.
May you judge your servants,
condemning the wicked man by bringing
what he has done on his own head
and providing justice for the righteous

for you alone know the human heart,
Now therefore:
Arise, LORD God, come to your resting place,
you and your powerful ark.
May your priests, LORD God, be clothed with salvation,
and may your faithful people rejoice in goodness.
As for you, if you walk before me as your father David walked, doing everything I have commanded you, and if you keep my statutes and ordinances,

Then Jehu son of the seer Hanani went out to confront him[fn] and said to King Jehoshaphat, “Do you help the wicked and love those who hate the LORD? Because of this, the LORD's wrath is on you.
He said:
LORD, God of our ancestors, are you not the God who is in heaven, and do you not rule over all the kingdoms of the nations? Power and might are in your hand, and no one can stand against you.
Are you not our God who drove out the inhabitants of this land before your people Israel and who gave it forever to the descendants of Abraham your friend?
“You yourself will be struck with many illnesses, including a disease of the intestines, until your intestines come out day after day because of the disease.”
They responded, “We will return these things and require nothing more from them. We will do as you say.”
So I summoned the priests and made everyone take an oath to do this.
In it was written:
It is reported among the nations — and Geshem[fn] agrees — that you and the Jews plan to rebel. This is the reason you are building the wall. According to these reports, you are to become their king
Then I replied to him, “There is nothing to these rumors you are spreading; you are inventing them in your own mind.”
You, the LORD,
are the God who chose Abram
and brought him out of Ur of the Chaldeans,
and changed his name to Abraham.
They refused to listen
and did not remember your wonders
you performed among them.
They became stiff-necked and appointed a leader
to return to their slavery in Egypt.[fn]
But you are a forgiving God,
gracious and compassionate,
slow to anger and abounding in faithful love,
and you did not abandon them.
you did not abandon them in the wilderness
because of your great compassion.
During the day the pillar of cloud
never turned away from them,
guiding them on their journey.
And during the night the pillar of fire
illuminated the way they should go.
So you handed them over to their enemies,
who oppressed them.
In their time of distress, they cried out to you,
and you heard from heaven.
In your abundant compassion
you gave them deliverers, who rescued them
from the power of their enemies.
But as soon as they had relief,
they again did what was evil in your sight.
So you abandoned them to the power of their enemies,
who dominated them.
When they cried out to you again,
you heard from heaven and rescued them
many times in your compassion.
However, in your abundant compassion,
you did not destroy them or abandon them,
for you are a gracious and compassionate God.
You are righteous concerning all that has happened to us,
because you have acted faithfully,
while we have acted wickedly.
“If you keep silent at this time, relief and deliverance will come to the Jewish people from another place, but you and your father's family will be destroyed. Who knows, perhaps you have come to your royal position for such a time as this.”
His wife Zeresh and all his friends told him, “Have them build a gallows seventy-five feet[fn] tall. Ask the king in the morning to hang Mordecai on it. Then go to the banquet with the king and enjoy yourself.” The advice pleased Haman, so he had the gallows constructed.
“Haven't you placed a hedge around him, his household, and everything he owns? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land.
The LORD asked Satan, “Where have you come from? ”
“From roaming through the earth,” Satan answered him, “and walking around on it.”
Then the LORD said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job? No one else on earth is like him, a man of perfect integrity, who fears God and turns away from evil. He still retains his integrity, even though you incited me against him, to destroy him for no good reason.”
But now that this has happened to you,
you have become exhausted.
It strikes you, and you are dismayed.
You who tear yourself in anger[fn] —
should the earth be abandoned on your account,
or a rock be removed from its place?
Does it delight the Almighty if you are righteous?
Does he profit if you perfect your behavior?
Could one who hates justice govern the world?
Will you condemn the mighty Righteous One,
Should God repay you on your terms
when you have rejected his?
You must choose, not I!
So declare what you know.
The earth is changed as clay is by a seal;
its hills stand out like the folds of a garment.
After the LORD had finished speaking[fn] to Job, he said to Eliphaz the Temanite, “I am angry with you and your two friends, for you have not spoken the truth about me, as my servant Job has.
Rise up, LORD!
Save me, my God!
You strike all my enemies on the cheek;
you break the teeth of the wicked.
When I observe your heavens,
the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars,
which you set in place,
But you yourself have seen trouble and grief,
observing it in order to take the matter into your hands.
The helpless one entrusts himself to you;
you are a helper of the fatherless.
Even when I go through the darkest valley,[fn]
I fear no danger,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff — they comfort me.
Guide me in your truth and teach me,
for you are the God of my salvation;
I wait for you all day long.
Do not remember the sins of my youth
or my acts of rebellion;
in keeping with your faithful love, remember me
because of your goodness, LORD.
Then I acknowledged my sin to you
and did not conceal my iniquity.
I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the LORD,”
and you forgave the guilt of my sin.Selah
I proclaim righteousness in the great assembly;
see, I do not keep my mouth closed[fn] —
as you know, LORD.
LORD, you do not[fn] withhold your compassion from me.
Your constant love and truth will always guard me.
I am oppressed and needy;
may the Lord think of me.
You are my helper and my deliverer;
my God, do not delay.
For you are the God of my refuge.
Why have you rejected me?
Why must I go about in sorrow
because of the enemy's oppression?
But God says to the wicked:
“What right do you have to recite my statutes
and to take my covenant on your lips?
God, you will bring them down
to the Pit of destruction;
men of bloodshed and treachery
will not live out half their days.
But I will trust in you.
You know the insults I endure —
my shame and disgrace.
You are aware of all my adversaries.
You divided the sea with your strength;
you smashed the heads of the sea monsters in the water;
May they know that you alone —
whose name is the LORD —
are the Most High over the whole earth.
You crushed Rahab like one who is slain;
you scattered your enemies with your powerful arm.
The heavens are yours; the earth also is yours.
The world and everything in it — you founded them.
Before the mountains were born,
before you gave birth to the earth and the world,
from eternity to eternity, you are God.
For you, LORD,
are the Most High over the whole earth;
you are exalted above all the gods.
The mighty King loves justice.
You have established fairness;
you have administered justice
and righteousness in Jacob.
LORD our God, you answered them.
You were a forgiving God to them,
but an avenger of their sinful actions.
You will rise up and have compassion on Zion,
for it is time to show favor to her —
the appointed time has come.
“They will perish, but you will endure;
all of them will wear out like clothing.
You will change them like a garment,
and they will pass away.
Though they curse, you will bless.
When they rise up, they will be put to shame,
but your servant will rejoice.
The LORD has sworn an oath and will not take it back:
“You are a priest forever
according to the pattern of Melchizedek.”
You know when I sit down and when I stand up;
you understand my thoughts from far away.
For it was you who created my inward parts;[fn]
you knit me together in my mother's womb.
Although my spirit is weak within me,
you know my way.
Along this path I travel
they have hidden a trap for me.
I cry to you, LORD;
I say, “You are my shelter,
my portion in the land of the living.”
Teach me to do your will,
for you are my God.
May your gracious Spirit
lead me on level ground.
Do not be hasty to speak, and do not be impulsive to make a speech before God. God is in heaven and you are on earth, so let your words be few.
Enjoy life with the wife you love all the days of your fleeting[fn] life, which has been given to you under the sun, all your fleeting days. For that is your portion in life and in your struggle under the sun.
Whatever your hands find to do, do with all your strength, because there is no work, planning, knowledge, or wisdom in Sheol where you are going.
If you do not know,
most beautiful of women,
follow[fn] the tracks of the flock,
and pasture your young goats
near the shepherds' tents.
The LORD said to Isaiah, “Go out with your son Shear-jashub[fn] to meet Ahaz at the end of the conduit of the upper pool, by the road to the Launderer's Field.
“For before the boy knows to reject what is bad and choose what is good, the land of the two kings you dread will be abandoned.
Even the cypresses and the cedars of Lebanon
rejoice over you:
“Since you have been laid low,
no lumberjack has come against us.”
They all respond to you, saying,
“You too have become as weak as we are;
you have become like us!
You said to yourself,
“I will ascend to the heavens;
I will set up my throne
above the stars of God.
I will sit on the mount of the gods' assembly,
in the remotest parts of the North.[fn]
But you are thrown out without a grave,
like a worthless branch,
covered by those slain with the sword
and dumped into a rocky pit like a trampled corpse.
You will not join them in burial,
because you destroyed your land
and slaughtered your own people.
The offspring of evildoers
will never be mentioned again.
The fortress disappears from Ephraim,
and a kingdom from Damascus.
The remnant of Aram will be
like the splendor of the Israelites.
This is the declaration of the LORD of Armies.
“What are you doing here? Who authorized you to carve out a tomb for yourself here, carving your tomb on the height and cutting a resting place for yourself out of rock?
You disputed with Israel
by banishing and driving her away.[fn]
He removed her with his severe storm
on the day of the east wind.
Indeed! Topheth has been ready
for the king for a long time.
Its funeral pyre is deep and wide,
with plenty of fire and wood.
The breath of the LORD, like a torrent of burning sulfur,
kindles it.
LORD of Armies, God of Israel, enthroned between the cherubim, you are God — you alone — of all the kingdoms of the earth. You made the heavens and the earth.
Now, LORD our God, save us from his power so that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you, LORD, are God[fn] — you alone.
“You have mocked the Lord through your servants.
You have said, “With my many chariots
I have gone up to the heights of the mountains,
to the far recesses of Lebanon.
I cut down its tallest cedars,
its choice cypress trees.
I came to its distant heights,
its densest forest.
In those days Hezekiah became terminally ill. The prophet Isaiah son of Amoz came and said to him, “This is what the LORD says: ‘Set your house in order, for you are about to die; you will not recover.' ”[fn]
But you, Israel, my servant,
Jacob, whom I have chosen,
descendant of Abraham, my friend —
You will winnow them
and a wind will carry them away,
a whirlwind will scatter them.
But you will rejoice in the LORD;
you will boast in the Holy One of Israel.
“Remind me. Let's argue the case together.
Recount the facts, so that you may be vindicated.
“I call you by your name,
for the sake of my servant Jacob
and Israel my chosen one.
I give a name to you,
though you do not know me.
“I was angry with my people;
I profaned my possession,
and I handed them over to you.
You showed them no mercy;
you made your yoke very heavy on the elderly.
“You were secure in your wickedness;
you said, ‘No one sees me.'
Your wisdom and knowledge
led you astray.
You said to yourself,
‘I am, and there is no one else.'
Wake up, wake up!
Arm of the LORD, clothe yourself with strength.
Wake up as in days past,
as in generations long ago.
Wasn't it you who hacked Rahab to pieces,
who pierced the sea monster?
And they will be called[fn] the Holy People,
the LORD's Redeemed;
and you will be called Cared For,
A City Not Deserted.
Yet you are our Father,
even though Abraham does not know us
and Israel doesn't recognize us.
You, LORD, are our Father;
your name is Our Redeemer
from Ancient Times.
You welcome the one who joyfully does what is right;
they remember you in your ways.
But we have sinned, and you were angry.
How can we be saved if we remain in our sins?[fn]
Then the word of the LORD came to me, asking, “What do you see, Jeremiah? ”
I replied, “I see a branch of an almond tree.”
Again the word of the LORD came to me asking, “What do you see? ”
And I replied, “I see a boiling pot, its lip tilted from the north to the south.”
“Now, get ready. Stand up and tell them everything that I command you. Do not be intimidated by them or I will cause you to cower before them.
say to a tree, “You are my father,”
and to a stone, “You gave birth to me.”
For they have turned their back to me
and not their face,
yet in their time of disaster they beg,
“Rise up and save us! ”
Return, you faithless children.
I will heal your unfaithfulness.
“Here we are, coming to you,
for you are the LORD our God.
And you, devastated one, what are you doing
that you dress yourself in scarlet,
that you adorn yourself with gold jewelry,
that you enhance your eyes with makeup?
You beautify yourself for nothing.
Your lovers reject you;
they intend to take your life.
“As for you, do not pray for these people. Do not offer a cry or a prayer on their behalf, and do not beg me, for I will not listen to you.
“As for you, do not pray for these people. Do not raise up a cry or a prayer on their behalf, for I will not be listening when they call out to me at the time of their disaster.
If you have raced with runners
and they have worn you out,
how can you compete with horses?
If you stumble[fn] in a peaceful land,
what will you do in the thickets of the Jordan?
What will you say when he appoints
close friends as leaders over you,
ones you yourself trained?
Won't labor pains seize you,
as they do a woman in labor?
Why are you like a helpless man,
like a warrior unable to save?
Yet you are among us, LORD,
and we bear your name.
Don't leave us!
Can any of the worthless idols of the nations bring rain?
Or can the skies alone give showers?
Are you not the LORD our God?
We therefore put our hope in you,
for you have done all these things.
“You have left me.”
This is the LORD's declaration.
“You have turned your back,
so I have stretched out my hand against you
and destroyed you.
I am tired of showing compassion.
Therefore, this is what the LORD says:
If you return, I will take you back;
you will stand in my presence.
And if you speak noble words,
rather than worthless ones,
you will be my spokesman.
It is they who must return to you;
you must not return to them.
Heal me, LORD, and I will be healed;
save me, and I will be saved,
for you are my praise.
But I have not run away from being your shepherd,
and I have not longed for the fatal day.
You know my words were spoken in your presence.
“As for you, Pashhur, and all who live in your house, you will go into captivity. You will go to Babylon. There you will die, and there you will be buried, you and all your friends to whom you prophesied lies.' ”
“You are to say, ‘Hear the word of the LORD, king of Judah, you who sit on the throne of David — you, your officers, and your people who enter these gates.
Are you a king because you excel in cedar?
Didn't your father eat and drink
and administer justice and righteousness?
Then it went well with him.
“In fact, I will hand you over to those you dread, who intend to take your life, to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and the Chaldeans.
The LORD said to me, “What do you see, Jeremiah? ”
I said, “Figs! The good figs are very good, but the bad figs are extremely bad, so bad they are inedible.”
“As for you, you are to prophesy all these things to them, and say to them:
The LORD roars from on high;
he makes his voice heard from his holy dwelling.
He roars loudly over his grazing land;
he calls out with a shout, like those who tread grapes,
against all the inhabitants of the earth.
The prophet Jeremiah said, “Amen! May the LORD do that. May the LORD make the words you have prophesied come true and may he restore the articles of the LORD's temple and all the exiles from Babylon to this place!
I have surely heard Ephraim moaning,
“You disciplined me, and I have been disciplined
like an untrained calf.
Take me back, so that I can return,
for you, LORD, are my God.
King Zedekiah of Judah had imprisoned him, saying, “Why are you prophesying as you do? You say, ‘This is what the LORD says: Look, I am about to hand this city over to Babylon's king, and he will capture it.
“Then, as the LORD had said, my cousin Hanamel came to the guard's courtyard and urged me, ‘Please buy my field in Anathoth in the land of Benjamin, for you own the right of inheritance and redemption. Buy it for yourself.' Then I knew that this was the word of the LORD.
“Oh, Lord GOD! You yourself made the heavens and earth by your great power and with your outstretched arm. Nothing is too difficult for you!
“Yet you, Lord GOD, have said to me, ‘Purchase the field and call in witnesses' — even though the city has been handed over to the Chaldeans! ”
“Now therefore, this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says to this city about which you said, ‘It has been handed over to Babylon's king through sword, famine, and plague':
“Fields will be bought in this land about which you are saying, ‘It's a desolation without people or animals; it has been handed over to the Chaldeans! '
“As for you, you will not escape from him but are certain to be captured and handed over to him. You will meet the king of Babylon eye to eye and speak face to face;[fn] you will go to Babylon.
Then all the officials sent word to Baruch through Jehudi son of Nethaniah, son of Shelemiah, son of Cushi, saying, “Bring the scroll that you read in the hearing of the people, and come.” So Baruch son of Neriah took the scroll and went to them.
The officials said to Baruch, “You and Jeremiah must hide and tell no one where you are.”
“Take another scroll, and once again write on it the original words that were on the original scroll that King Jehoiakim of Judah burned.
“You are to proclaim concerning King Jehoiakim of Judah, ‘This is what the LORD says: You have burned the scroll, asking, “Why have you written on it that the king of Babylon will certainly come and destroy this land and cause it to be without people or animals? ”
But when he was at the Benjamin Gate, an officer of the guard was there, whose name was Irijah son of Shelemiah, son of Hananiah, and he apprehended the prophet Jeremiah, saying, “You are defecting to the Chaldeans.”
Then Jeremiah said to King Zedekiah, “How have I sinned against you or your servants or these people that you have put me in prison?
Jeremiah therefore said to Zedekiah, “This is what the LORD, the God of Armies, the God of Israel, says: ‘If indeed you surrender to the officials of the king of Babylon, then you will live, this city will not be burned, and you and your household will survive.
“But if you do not surrender to the officials of the king of Babylon, then this city will be handed over to the Chaldeans. They will burn it, and you yourself will not escape from them.' ”
“But if you refuse to surrender, this is the verdict[fn] that the LORD has shown me:
All your wives and children will be brought out to the Chaldeans. You yourself will not escape from them, for you will be seized by the king of Babylon and this city will burn.' ”
Then Zedekiah warned Jeremiah, “Don't let anyone know about this conversation[fn] or you will die.
“But I will rescue you on that day — this is the LORD's declaration — and you will not be handed over to the men you dread.
But Gedaliah son of Ahikam responded to Johanan son of Kareah, “Don't do that! What you're saying about Ishmael is a lie.”
“But as for you, do you pursue great things for yourself? Stop pursuing! For I am about to bring disaster on all humanity” — this is the LORD's declaration — “but I will grant you your life like the spoils of war wherever you go.” ' ”
But you, my servant Jacob, do not be afraid,
and do not be discouraged, Israel,
for without fail I will save you from far away,
and your descendants from the land of their captivity!
Jacob will return and have calm and quiet
with no one to frighten him.
Because you trust in your works and treasures,
you will be captured also.
Chemosh will go into exile
with his priests and officials.
For this is what the LORD says: “If those who do not deserve to drink the cup must drink it, can you possibly remain unpunished? You will not remain unpunished, for you must drink it too.
“Say, ‘LORD, you have threatened to cut off this place so that no one will live in it — people or animals. Indeed, it will remain desolate forever.'
People have heard me groaning,
but there is no one to comfort me.
All my enemies have heard of my misfortune;
they are glad that you have caused it.
Bring on the day you have announced,
so that they may become like me.
“Whether they listen or refuse to listen — for they are a rebellious house — they will know that a prophet has been among them.
“But you, son of man, do not be afraid of them and do not be afraid of their words, even though briers and thorns are beside you and you live among scorpions. Don't be afraid of their words or discouraged by the look on their faces, for they are a rebellious house.
“For you are not being sent to a people of unintelligible speech or a difficult language but to the house of Israel —
“But if you warn a wicked person and he does not turn from his wickedness or his wicked way, he will die for his iniquity, but you will have rescued yourself.
“But if you warn the righteous person that he should not sin, and he does not sin, he will indeed live because he listened to your warning, and you will have rescued yourself.”
“Take an iron plate and set it up as an iron wall between yourself and the city. Face it so that it is under siege, and besiege it. This will be a sign for the house of Israel.
“Then lie down on your left side and place the iniquity[fn] of the house of Israel on it. You will bear their iniquity for the number of days you lie on your side.
“Also take wheat, barley, beans, lentils, millet, and spelt. Put them in a single container and make them into bread for yourself. You are to eat it during the number of days you lie on your side, 390 days.
While they were killing, I was left alone. And I fell facedown and cried out, “Oh, Lord GOD! Are you going to destroy the entire remnant of Israel when you pour out your wrath on Jerusalem? ”
Now while I was prophesying, Pelatiah son of Benaiah died. Then I fell facedown and cried out loudly, “Oh, Lord GOD! You are bringing the remnant of Israel to an end! ”
“Son of man, you are living among a rebellious house. They have eyes to see but do not see, and ears to hear but do not hear, for they are a rebellious house.
“During the day, bring out your bags like an exile's bags while they look on. Then in the evening go out in their sight like those going into exile.
“Son of man, hasn't the house of Israel, that rebellious house, asked you, ‘What are you doing? '
“Men give gifts to all prostitutes, but you gave gifts to all your lovers. You bribed them to come to you from all around for your sexual favors.
You are the daughter of your mother, who despised her husband and children. You are the sister of your sisters, who despised their husbands and children. Your mother was a Hethite and your father an Amorite.
“ ‘As I live — the declaration of the Lord GOD — your sister Sodom and her daughters have not behaved as you and your daughters have.
“You must also bear your disgrace, since you have helped your sisters out.[fn] For they appear more righteous than you because of your sins, which you committed more detestably than they did. So you also, be ashamed and bear your disgrace, since you have made your sisters appear righteous.
“As for your sisters, Sodom and her daughters and Samaria and her daughters will return to their former state. You and your daughters will also return to your former state.
“You yourself must bear the consequences of your depravity and detestable practices — this is the LORD's declaration.
“And when they ask you, ‘Why are you groaning? ' then say, ‘Because of the news that is coming. Every heart will melt, and every hand will become weak. Every spirit will be discouraged, and all knees will run with urine.[fn] Yes, it is coming and it will happen. This is the declaration of the Lord GOD.' ”
“Son of man, say to her, ‘You are a land that has not been cleansed, that has not received rain in the day of indignation.'
Therefore, this is what the Lord GOD says: “Because you have forgotten me and cast me behind your back, you must bear the consequences of your indecency and promiscuity.”
Then the people asked me, “Won't you tell us what these things you are doing mean for us? ”
“Say to Tyre, who is situated at the entrance of the sea, merchant of the peoples to many coasts and islands, ‘This is what the Lord GOD says:
Tyre, you declared,
“I am perfect in beauty.”
“Son of man, say to the ruler of Tyre, ‘This is what the Lord GOD says: Your[fn] heart is proud, and you have said, “I am a god; I sit in the seat of gods in the heart of the sea.” Yet you are a man and not a god, though you have regarded your heart as that of a god.
“Will you still say, “I am a god,”
in the presence of those who slay[fn] you?
Yet you will be only a man, not a god,
in the hands of those who kill you.
“From the day you were created
you were blameless in your ways
until wickedness was found in you.
“But you will be shattered
and will lie down among the uncircumcised,
with those slain by the sword.
“But if you warn a wicked person to turn from his way and he doesn't turn from it, he will die for his iniquity, but you will have rescued yourself.
“I will turn your cities into ruins,
and you will become a desolation.
Then you will know that I am the LORD.
Then he said to me, “Son of man, can these bones live? ”
I replied, “Lord GOD, only you know.”
“When the sticks you have written on are in your hand and in full view of the people,
“ ‘Be prepared and get yourself ready, you and your whole assembly that has been mobilized around you; you will be their guard.
“You, all of your troops, and many peoples with you will advance, coming like a thunderstorm; you will be like a cloud covering the land.
Sheba and Dedan and the merchants of Tarshish with all its rulers[fn] will ask you, “Have you come to seize spoil? Have you mobilized your assembly to carry off plunder, to make off with silver and gold, to take cattle and possessions, to seize plenty of spoil? ” '
“ ‘This is what the Lord GOD says: Are you the one I spoke about in former times through my servants, the prophets of Israel, who for years prophesied in those times that I would bring you against them?
“You, all your troops, and the peoples who are with you will fall on the mountains of Israel. I will give you as food to every kind of predatory bird and to the wild animals.
He spoke to me: “Son of man, look with your eyes, listen with your ears, and pay attention to everything I am going to show you, for you have been brought here so that I might show it to you. Report everything you see to the house of Israel.”
The Chaldeans spoke to the king (Aramaic[fn] begins here): “May the king live forever. Tell your servants the dream, and we will give the interpretation.”
“Wherever people live — or wild animals, or birds of the sky — he has handed them over to you and made you ruler over them all. You are the head of gold.
“This is the dream that I, King Nebuchadnezzar, had. Now, Belteshazzar, tell me the interpretation, because none of the wise men of my kingdom can make the interpretation known to me. But you can, because you have a spirit of the holy gods.”
“that tree is you, Your Majesty. For you have become great and strong: your greatness has grown and even reaches the sky, and your dominion extends to the ends of the earth.
Then Daniel was brought before the king. The king said to him, “Are you Daniel, one of the Judean exiles that my predecessor the king brought from Judah?
“But you his successor, Belshazzar, have not humbled your heart, even though you knew all this.
“Instead, you have exalted yourself against the Lord of the heavens. The vessels from his house were brought to you, and as you and your nobles, wives, and concubines drank wine from them, you praised the gods made of silver and gold, bronze, iron, wood, and stone, which do not see or hear or understand. But you have not glorified the God who holds your life-breath in his hand and who controls the whole course of your life.[fn]
So the king gave the order, and they brought Daniel and threw him into the lions' den. The king said to Daniel, “May your God, whom you continually serve, rescue you! ”
When he reached the den, he cried out in anguish to Daniel. “Daniel, servant of the living God,” the king said,[fn] “has your God, whom you continually serve, been able to rescue you from the lions? ”
“The vision of the evenings and the mornings
that has been told is true.
Now you are to seal up the vision
because it refers to many days in the future.”
“At the beginning of your petitions an answer went out, and I have come to give it, for you are treasured by God.[fn] So consider the message and understand the vision:
My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.
Because you have rejected knowledge,
I will reject you from serving as my priest.
Since you have forgotten the law of your God,
I will also forget your sons.
Israel, if you act promiscuously,
don't let Judah become guilty!
Do not go to Gilgal
or make a pilgrimage to Beth-aven,[fn]
and do not swear an oath: As the LORD lives!
A wind with its wings will carry them off,[fn]
and they will be ashamed of their sacrifices.
But you must return to your God.
Maintain love and justice,
and always put your hope in God.
The LORD asked me, “What do you see, Amos? ”
I replied, “A plumb line.”
Then the Lord said, “I am setting a plumb line among my people Israel; I will no longer spare them:
Now hear the word of the LORD. You say:
Do not prophesy against Israel;
do not preach against the house of Isaac.
Therefore, this is what the LORD says:
Your wife will be a prostitute in the city,
your sons and daughters will fall by the sword,
and your land will be divided up
with a measuring line.
You yourself will die on pagan[fn] soil,
and Israel will certainly go into exile
from its homeland.
He asked me, “What do you see, Amos? ”
I replied, “A basket of summer fruit.”[fn]
The LORD said to me, “The end has come for my people Israel; I will no longer spare them.
On the day you stood aloof,
on the day strangers captured his wealth,[fn]
while foreigners entered his city gate
and cast lots for Jerusalem,
you were just like one of them.
Do not enter my people's city gate
in the day of their disaster.
Yes, you — do not gloat over their misery
in the day of their disaster,
and do not appropriate their possessions
in the day of their disaster.
The captain approached him and said, “What are you doing sound asleep? Get up! Call to your god.[fn] Maybe this god will consider us, and we won't perish.”
He prayed to the LORD, “Please, LORD, isn't this what I said while I was still in my own country? That's why I fled toward Tarshish in the first place. I knew that you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger, abounding in faithful love, and one who relents from sending disaster.
Then God asked Jonah, “Is it right for you to be angry about the plant? ”
“Yes, it's right! ” he replied. “I'm angry enough to die! ”
And the LORD said, “You cared about the plant, which you did not labor over and did not grow. It appeared in a night and perished in a night.
“You will eat but not be satisfied,
for there will be hunger within you.
What you acquire, you cannot save,
and what you do save,
I will give to the sword.[fn]
“You will sow but not reap;
you will press olives
but not anoint yourself with oil;
and you will tread grapes
but not drink the wine.
Are you not from eternity, LORD my God?
My Holy One, you[fn] will not die.
LORD, you appointed them to execute judgment;
my Rock, you destined them to punish us.
Since you have plundered many nations,
all the peoples who remain will plunder you —
because of human bloodshed
and violence against lands, cities,
and all who live in them.
You will be filled with disgrace instead of glory.
You also — drink,
and expose your uncircumcision![fn]
The cup in the LORD's right hand
will come around to you,
and utter disgrace will cover your glory.
I asked, “Where are you going? ”
He answered me, “To measure Jerusalem to determine its width and length.”
“This is what the LORD of Armies says: If you walk in my ways and keep my mandates, you will both rule my house and take care of my courts; I will also grant you access among these who are standing here.
“Listen, High Priest Joshua, you and your colleagues sitting before you; indeed, these men are a sign that I am about to bring my servant, the Branch.
“Take an offering from the exiles, from Heldai, Tobijah, and Jedaiah, who have arrived from Babylon, and go that same day to the house of Josiah son of Zephaniah.
Naomi said, “Look, your sister-in-law has gone back to her people and to her gods. Follow your sister-in-law.”
But Ruth replied:
Don't plead with me to abandon you
or to return and not follow you.
For wherever you go, I will go,
and wherever you live, I will live;
your people will be my people,
and your God will be my God.
Then Boaz said to Ruth, “Listen, my daughter.[fn] Don't go and gather grain in another field, and don't leave this one, but stay here close to my female servants.
“Wash, put on perfumed oil, and wear your best clothes. Go down to the threshing floor, but don't let the man know you are there until he has finished eating and drinking.
“Even while Saul was king over us, you were the one who led us out to battle and brought us back. The LORD also said to you, ‘You will shepherd my people Israel, and you will be ruler over Israel.' ”
