Abimelech replied, “I don't know who did this thing. You didn't report anything to me, so I hadn't heard about it until today.”
“She quickly lowered her jug from her shoulder and said, ‘Drink, and I'll water your camels also.' So I drank, and she also watered the camels.
When he came to his father, he said, “My father.”
And he answered, “Here I am. Who are you, my son? ”
But his father Isaac said to him, “Who are you? ”
He answered, “I am Esau your firstborn son.”
Laban said to him, “Yes, you are my own flesh and blood.”[fn]
After Jacob had stayed with him a month,
“Come now, let's make a covenant, you and I. Let it be a witness between the two of us.”
“Reuben, you are my firstborn,
my strength and the firstfruits of my virility,
excelling in prominence, excelling in power.
Moses said to the LORD, “Look, you have told me, ‘Lead this people up,' but you have not let me know whom you will send with me. You said, ‘I know you by name, and you have also found favor with me.'
And the LORD responded, “Look, I am making a covenant. In the presence of all your people I will perform wonders that have never been done[fn] in the whole earth or in any nation. All the people you live among will see the LORD's work, for what I am doing with you is awe-inspiring.
But Moses asked him, “Are you jealous on my account? If only all the LORD's people were prophets and the LORD would place his Spirit on them! ”
“Please come and put a curse on these people for me because they are more powerful than I am. I may be able to defeat them and drive them out of the land, for I know that those you bless are blessed and those you curse are cursed.”
Balaam said to the angel of the LORD, “I have sinned, for I did not know that you were standing in the path to confront me. And now, if it is evil in your sight, I will go back.”
“After you have seen it, you will also be gathered to your people, as Aaron your brother was.
“but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. Do not do any work — you, your son or daughter, your male or female slave, your ox or donkey, any of your livestock, or the resident alien who lives within your city gates, so that your male and female slaves may rest as you do.
“The LORD your God will circumcise your heart and the hearts of your descendants, and you will love him with all your heart and all your soul so that you will live.
How happy you are, Israel!
Who is like you,
a people saved by the LORD?
He is the shield that protects you,
the sword you boast in.
Your enemies will cringe before you,
and you will tread on their backs.[fn]
He asked Zebah and Zalmunna, “What kind of men did you kill at Tabor? ”
“They were like you,” they said. “Each resembled the son of a king.”
Gilead's wife bore him sons, and when they grew up, they drove Jephthah out and said to him, “You will have no inheritance in our father's family, because you are the son of another woman.”
But Saul replied, “You can't go fight this Philistine. You're just a youth, and he's been a warrior since he was young.”
“Deal kindly with[fn] your servant, for you have brought me into a covenant with you before the LORD. If I have done anything wrong, then kill me yourself; why take me to your father? ”
“As for the matter you and I have spoken about, the LORD will be a witness[fn] between you and me forever.”
“Who has the king of Israel come after? What are you chasing after? A dead dog? A single flea?
David called to Abner, “You're a man, aren't you? Who in Israel is your equal? So why didn't you protect your lord the king when one of the people came to destroy him?
Saul said to him, “You are blessed, my son David. You will certainly do great things and will also prevail.” Then David went on his way, and Saul returned home.
David inquired of the young man who had brought him the report, “Where are you from? ”
“I'm the son of a resident alien,” he said. “I'm an Amalekite.”
You established your people Israel to be your own people forever, and you, LORD, have become their God.
“The LORD has paid you back for all the blood of the house of Saul in whose place you became king, and the LORD has handed the kingdom over to your son Absalom. Look, you are in trouble because you're a man of bloodshed! ”
“And tell Amasa, ‘Aren't you my flesh and blood?[fn] May God punish me and do so severely if you don't become commander of my army from now on instead of Joab! ' ”
The men of Israel answered the men of Judah, “We have ten shares in the king, so we have a greater claim to David than you. Why then do you despise us? Weren't we the first to speak of restoring our king? ” But the words of the men of Judah were harsher than those of the men of Israel.
Joab asked Amasa, “Are you well, my brother? ” Then with his right hand Joab grabbed Amasa by the beard to kiss him.
“Go, approach King David and say to him, ‘My lord the king, did you not swear to your servant: Your son Solomon is to become king after me, and he is the one who is to sit on my throne? So why has Adonijah become king? '
“Now, my lord the king, the eyes of all Israel are on you to tell them who will sit on the throne of my lord the king after him.
He was still speaking when Jonathan son of Abiathar the priest, suddenly arrived. Adonijah said, “Come in, for you are an important man, and you must be bringing good news.”
He said to him, “I am also a prophet like you. An angel spoke to me by the word of the LORD: ‘Bring him back with you to your house so that he may eat food and drink water.' ” The old prophet deceived him,
Ahab asked, “By whom? ”
And the prophet said, “This is what the LORD says: ‘By the young men of the provincial leaders.' ”
Then he asked, “Who is to start the battle? ”
He said, “You.”
So he asked Jehoshaphat, “Will you go with me to fight Ramoth-gilead? ”
Jehoshaphat replied to the king of Israel, “I am as you are, my people as your people, my horses as your horses.”
Naaman responded, “If not, please let your servant be given as much soil as a pair of mules can carry, for your servant will no longer offer a burnt offering or a sacrifice to any other god but the LORD.
He looked up toward the window and said, “Who is on my side? Who? ” Two or three eunuchs looked down at him,
You made your people Israel your own people forever, and you, LORD, have become their God.
Since you, my God, have revealed to[fn] your servant that you will build him a house, your servant has found courage to pray in your presence.
So now, you have been pleased to bless your servant's house that it may continue before you forever. For you, LORD, have blessed it, and it is blessed forever.
for Israel's King Ahab asked Judah's King Jehoshaphat, “Will you go with me to Ramoth-gilead? ”
He replied to him, “I am as you are, my people as your people; we will be with you in the battle.”
And you, Ezra, according to[fn] God's wisdom that you possess, appoint magistrates and judges to judge all the people in the region west of the Euphrates who know the laws of your God and to teach anyone who does not know them.
LORD God of Israel, you are righteous, for we survive as a remnant today. Here we are before you with our guilt, though no one can stand in your presence because of this.
You found his heart faithful in your sight,
and made a covenant with him
to give the land of the Canaanites,
Hethites, Amorites, Perizzites,
Jebusites, and Girgashites —
to give it to his descendants.
You have fulfilled your promise,
for you are righteous.
His wife said to him, “Are you still holding on to your integrity? Curse God and die! ”
I will declare the LORD's decree.
He said to me, “You are my Son;[fn]
today I have become your Father.
You are my hiding place;
you protect me from trouble.
You surround me with joyful shouts of deliverance.Selah
LORD my God, you have done many things —
your wondrous works and your plans for us;
none can compare with you.
If I were to report and speak of them,
they are more than can be told.
LORD God of Armies, you are the God of Israel.
Rise up to punish all the nations;
do not show favor to any wicked traitors.Selah
I am oppressed and needy;
hurry to me, God.
You are my help and my deliverer;
LORD, do not delay.
Be a rock of refuge for me,
where I can always go.
Give the command to save me,
for you are my rock and fortress.
I have leaned on you from birth;
you took me from my mother's womb.
My praise is always about you.
For you, Lord, are kind and ready to forgive,
abounding in faithful love to all who call on you.
But you, Lord, are a compassionate and gracious God,
slow to anger and abounding in faithful love and truth.
Show me a sign of your goodness;
my enemies will see and be put to shame
because you, LORD, have helped and comforted me.
But you, LORD, my Lord,
deal kindly with me for your name's sake;
because your faithful love is good, rescue me.
Blessed are you, land, when your king is a son of nobles
and your princes feast at the proper time —
for strength and not for drunkenness.
My dove, in the clefts of the rock,
in the crevices of the cliff,
let me see your face,[fn]
let me hear your voice;
for your voice is sweet,
and your face is lovely.
You have turned things around,
as if the potter were the same as the clay.
How can what is made say about its maker,
“He didn't make me”?
How can what is formed
say about the one who formed it,
“He doesn't understand what he's doing”?
Now this is what the LORD says —
the one who created you, Jacob,
and the one who formed you, Israel —
“Do not fear, for I have redeemed you;
I have called you by your name; you are mine.
He makes a god or his idol with the rest of it.
He bows down to it and worships;
he prays to it, “Save me, for you are my god.”
Remember these things, Jacob,
and Israel, for you are my servant;
I formed you, you are my servant;
Israel, you will never be forgotten by me.[fn]
I have put my words in your mouth,
and covered you in the shadow of my hand,
in order to plant[fn] the heavens,
to found the earth,
and to say to Zion, “You are my people.”
Who was it you dreaded and feared,
so that you lied and didn't remember me
or take it to heart?
I have kept silent for a long time, haven't I?[fn]
So you do not fear me.
Yet you are our Father,
even though Abraham does not know us
and Israel doesn't recognize us.
You, LORD, are our Father;
your name is Our Redeemer
from Ancient Times.
Yet LORD, you are our Father;
we are the clay, and you are our potter;
we all are the work of your hands.
say to a tree, “You are my father,”
and to a stone, “You gave birth to me.”
For they have turned their back to me
and not their face,
yet in their time of disaster they beg,
“Rise up and save us! ”
As for you, LORD, you know me; you see me.
You test whether my heart is with you.
Drag the wicked away like sheep to slaughter
and set them apart for the day of killing.
But you, LORD, know
all their deadly plots against me.
Do not wipe out their iniquity;
do not blot out their sin before you.
Let them be forced to stumble before you;
deal with them in the time of your anger.
For this is what the LORD says concerning the house of the king of Judah:
“You are like Gilead to me,
or the summit of Lebanon,
but I will certainly turn you into a wilderness,
uninhabited cities.
You are my war club,
my weapons of war.
With you I will smash nations;
with you I will bring kingdoms to ruin.
“But you, son of man, do not be afraid of them and do not be afraid of their words, even though briers and thorns are beside you and you live among scorpions. Don't be afraid of their words or discouraged by the look on their faces, for they are a rebellious house.
“And you, son of man, listen to what I tell you: Do not be rebellious like that rebellious house. Open your mouth and eat what I am giving you.”
“As for you, son of man, they will put ropes on you and bind you with them so you cannot go out among them.
“Now you, son of man, take a brick, set it in front of you, and draw the city of Jerusalem on it.
“Now you, son of man, take a sharp sword, use it as you would a barber's razor, and shave your head and beard. Then take a set of scales and divide the hair.
“Son of man, this is what the Lord GOD says to the land of Israel:
An end! The end has come
on the four corners of the earth.
“Now you, son of man, get your bags ready for exile and go into exile in their sight during the day. You will go into exile from your place to another place while they watch; perhaps they will understand, though they are a rebellious house.
“Now you, son of man, face[fn] the women among your people who prophesy out of their own imagination, and prophesy against them.
“Son of man, how does the wood of the vine, that branch among the trees of the forest, compare to any other wood?
“But you, son of man, groan! Groan bitterly with a broken heart[fn] right before their eyes.
“So you, son of man, prophesy and clap your hands together:
Let the sword strike two times, even three.
It is a sword for massacre,
a sword for great massacre —
it surrounds[fn] them!
“Now you, son of man, mark out two roads that the sword of Babylon's king can take. Both of them should originate from the same land. And make a signpost at the fork in the road to each city.
“Now you, son of man, prophesy, and say, ‘This is what the Lord GOD says concerning the Ammonites and their contempt.' You are to proclaim,
‘A sword! A sword
is drawn for slaughter,
polished to consume, to flash like lightning.
“As for you, son of man, will you pass judgment? Will you pass judgment against the city of blood? Then explain all her detestable practices to her.
“Because of the depravity of your uncleanness —
since I tried to purify you,
but you would not be purified from your uncleanness —
you will not be pure again
until I have satisfied my wrath on you.
“As for you, son of man, know that on that day I will take from them their stronghold — their pride and joy, the delight of their eyes, and the longing of their hearts — as well as their sons and daughters.
“Son of man, say to the ruler of Tyre, ‘This is what the Lord GOD says: Your[fn] heart is proud, and you have said, “I am a god; I sit in the seat of gods in the heart of the sea.” Yet you are a man and not a god, though you have regarded your heart as that of a god.
“As for you, son of man, I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel. When you hear a word from my mouth, give them a warning from me.
“Now as for you, son of man, say to the house of Israel, ‘You have said this: “Our transgressions and our sins are heavy on us, and we are wasting away because of them! How then can we survive? ” '
“As for you, son of man, your people are talking about you near the city walls and in the doorways of their houses. One person speaks to another, each saying to his brother, ‘Come and hear what the message is that comes from the LORD! '
“Son of man, prophesy to the mountains of Israel and say, ‘Mountains of Israel, hear the word of the LORD.
“As for you, son of man, prophesy against Gog and say, ‘This is what the Lord GOD says: Look, I am against you, Gog, chief prince of[fn] Meshech and Tubal.
“Son of man, this is what the Lord GOD says: Tell every kind of bird and all the wild animals, ‘Assemble and come! Gather from all around to my sacrificial feast that I am slaughtering for you, a great feast on the mountains of Israel; you will eat flesh and drink blood.
“As for you, son of man, describe the temple to the house of Israel, so that they may be ashamed of their iniquities. Let them measure its pattern,
“Your Majesty, as you were watching, suddenly a colossal statue appeared. That statue, tall and dazzling, was standing in front of you, and its appearance was terrifying.
“Your Majesty, you are king of kings. The God of the heavens has given you sovereignty, power, strength, and glory.
“You as king have issued a decree that everyone who hears the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, drum, and every kind of music must fall down and worship the gold statue.
“This is the dream that I, King Nebuchadnezzar, had. Now, Belteshazzar, tell me the interpretation, because none of the wise men of my kingdom can make the interpretation known to me. But you can, because you have a spirit of the holy gods.”
“But you, Daniel, keep these words secret and seal the book until the time of the end. Many will roam about, and knowledge will increase.”[fn]
I will sow her[fn] in the land for myself,
and I will have compassion
on Lo-ruhamah;
I will say to Lo-ammi:
You are my people,
and he will say, “You are my God.”
Then they said to him, “Tell us who is to blame for this trouble we're in. What is your business, and where are you from? What is your country, and what people are you from? ”
So they called out to the LORD, “Please, LORD, don't let us perish because of this man's life, and don't charge us with innocent blood! For you, LORD, have done just as you pleased.”
And you, watchtower for the flock,
fortified hill[fn] of Daughter Zion,
the former rule will come to you;
sovereignty will come to Daughter Jerusalem.
Bethlehem Ephrathah,
you are small among the clans of Judah;
one will come from you
to be ruler over Israel for me.
His origin[fn] is from antiquity,
from ancient times.
Who is a God like you,
forgiving iniquity and passing over rebellion
for the remnant of his inheritance?
He does not hold on to his anger forever
because he delights in faithful love.
He asked me, “What do you see? ”
I replied, “I see a solid gold lampstand with a bowl at the top. The lampstand also has seven lamps at the top with seven spouts for each of[fn] the lamps.
So he asked, “Who are you? ”
“I am Ruth, your servant,” she replied. “Take me under your wing,[fn] for you are a family redeemer.”
