After they were gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, “Get up! Take the child and his mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I tell you. For Herod is about to search for the child to kill him.”

And he said to him, “I will give you all these things if you will fall down and worship me.”[fn]

“Truly I tell you, you will never get out of there until you have paid the last penny.[fn]

“If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of the parts of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.

“As for the one who wants to sue you and take away your shirt, let him have your coat as well.

“so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.[fn]

“But when you pray, go into your private room, shut your door, and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.[fn]

“so that your fasting isn't obvious to others but to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.[fn]

Then Jesus told the centurion, “Go. As you have believed, let it be done for you.” And his servant was healed that very moment.[fn]

A scribe approached him and said, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.”

“Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that were done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented in sackcloth and ashes long ago.

At that time Jesus said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent and revealed them to infants.

Someone told him, “Look, your mother and your brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you.”[fn]

since John had been telling him, “It's not lawful for you to have her.”

Then Jesus replied to her, “Woman, your faith is great. Let it be done for you as you want.” And from that moment[fn] her daughter was healed.

Jesus responded, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah,[fn] because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but my Father in heaven.

Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, “Oh no,[fn] Lord! This will never happen to you! ”

“Yes,” he said.

When he went into the house, Jesus spoke to him first,[fn] “What do you think, Simon? From whom do earthly kings collect tariffs or taxes? From their sons or from strangers? ”[fn]

“If he doesn't pay attention to them, tell the church.[fn] If he doesn't pay attention even to the church, let him be like a Gentile and a tax collector to you.

“I tell you, not as many as seven,” Jesus replied, “but seventy times seven.[fn]

“At this, the servant fell facedown before him and said, ‘Be patient with me, and I will pay you everything.'

“At this, his fellow servant fell down[fn] and began begging him, ‘Be patient with me, and I will pay you back.'

“Then, after he had summoned him, his master said to him, ‘You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you begged me.

Then Peter responded to him, “See, we have left everything and followed you. So what will there be for us? ”

Tell Daughter Zion,

“See, your King is coming to you,

gentle, and mounted on a donkey,

and on a colt,

the foal of a donkey.”

When he entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him as he was teaching and said, “By what authority are you doing these things? Who gave you this authority? ”

So they sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians. “Teacher,” they said, “we know that you are truthful and teach truthfully the way of God. You don't care what anyone thinks nor do you show partiality.[fn]

“Then they too will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or without clothes, or sick, or in prison, and not help you? '

On the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Where do you want us to make preparations for you to eat the Passover? ”

“Truly I tell you,” Jesus said to him, “tonight, before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.”

He was in the stern, sleeping on the cushion. So they woke him up and said to him, “Teacher! Don't you care that we're going to die? ”

“What is your name? ” he asked him.

“My name is Legion,” he answered him, “because we are many.”

Jesus did not let him but told him, “Go home to your own people, and report to them how much the Lord has done for you and how he has had mercy on you.”

John had been telling Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife.”

When Herodias's own daughter[fn] came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his guests. The king said to the girl, “Ask me whatever you want, and I'll give it to you.”

When Jesus saw that a crowd was quickly gathering, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, “You mute and deaf spirit, I command you: Come out of him and never enter him again.”

Peter began to tell him, “Look, we have left everything and followed you.”

Then Jesus answered him, “What do you want me to do for you? ”

“Rabboni,”[fn] the blind man said to him, “I want to see.”

and asked him, “By what authority are you doing these things? Who gave you this authority to do these things? ”

When they came, they said to him, “Teacher, we know you are truthful and don't care what anyone thinks, nor do you show partiality but teach the way of God truthfully. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar or not? Should we pay or shouldn't we? ”

“Truly I tell you,” Jesus said to him, “today, this very night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.”

And he said, “Abba,[fn] Father! All things are possible for you. Take this cup away from me. Nevertheless, not what I will, but what you will.”

So it also seemed good to me, since I have carefully investigated everything from the very first, to write to you in an orderly sequence, most honorable Theophilus,

But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zechariah, because your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you will name him John.

The angel answered him, “I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God, and I was sent to speak to you and tell you this good news.

The angel replied to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore, the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.

Seeing their faith he said, “Friend,[fn] your sins are forgiven.”

“Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, ‘Get up and walk'?

“Therefore I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven; that's why she loved much. But the one who is forgiven little, loves little.”

“What is your name? ” Jesus asked him.

“Legion,” he said, because many demons had entered him.

“Go back to your home, and tell all that God has done for you.” And off he went, proclaiming throughout the town how much Jesus had done for him.

As they were traveling on the road someone said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.”

Another said, “I will follow you, Lord, but first let me go and say good-bye to those at my house.”

At that time he[fn] rejoiced in the Holy[fn] Spirit and said, “I praise[fn] you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent and revealed them to infants. Yes, Father, because this was your good pleasure.[fn]

“The next day[fn] he took out two denarii,[fn] gave them to the innkeeper, and said, ‘Take care of him. When I come back I'll reimburse you for whatever extra you spend.'

But Martha was distracted by her many tasks, and she came up and asked, “Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me to serve alone? So tell her to give me a hand.”[fn]

“Then he will answer from inside and say, ‘Don't bother me! The door is already locked, and my children and I have gone to bed. I can't get up to give you anything.'

“I tell you, you will never get out of there until you have paid the last penny.”[fn]

“The one who invited both of you may come and say to you, ‘Give your place to this man,' and then in humiliation, you will proceed to take the lowest place.

He also said to the one who had invited him, “When you give a lunch or a dinner, don't invite your friends, your brothers or sisters, your relatives, or your rich neighbors, because they might invite you back, and you would be repaid.

“And you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you; for you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.”

“But he replied to his father, ‘Look, I have been slaving many years for you, and I have never disobeyed your orders, yet you never gave me a goat so that I could celebrate with my friends.

“The Pharisee was standing and praying like this about himself:[fn] ‘God, I thank you that I'm not like other people ​— ​greedy, unrighteous, adulterers, or even like this tax collector.

When Jesus heard this, he told him, “You still lack one thing: Sell all you have and distribute it to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

Then Peter said, “Look, we have left what we had and followed you.”

“What do you want me to do for you? ”

“Lord,” he said, “I want to see.”

“For the days will come on you when your enemies will build a barricade around you, surround you, and hem you in on every side.

and said to him, “Tell us, by what authority are you doing these things? Who is it who gave you this authority? ”

“Tell the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher asks you, “Where is the guest room where I can eat the Passover with my disciples? ” '

“I tell you, Peter,” he said, “the rooster will not crow today until[fn] you deny three times that you know me.”

And he said to him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.”

Jesus responded to him, “Do you believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than this.”

Jesus replied, “Truly I tell you, unless someone is born again,[fn] he cannot see the kingdom of God.”

Jesus answered, “Truly I tell you, unless someone is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.

“Do not be amazed that I told you that you must be born again.

“Truly I tell you, we speak what we know and we testify to what we have seen, but you do not accept our testimony.

Jesus answered, “If you knew the gift of God, and who is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,' you would ask him, and he would give you living water.”

Jesus told her, “I, the one speaking to you, am he.”

and so the Jews said to the man who had been healed, “This is the Sabbath. The law prohibits you from picking up your mat.”

“Who is this man who told you, ‘Pick up your mat and walk'? ” they asked.

“What sign, then, are you going to do so that we may see and believe you? ” they asked. “What are you going to perform?

Then they asked him, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes? ”

“Yet even now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you.”

Jesus said to her, “Didn't I tell you that if you believed you would see the glory of God? ”

“Lord,” Peter asked, “why can't I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.”

They answered him, “If this man weren't a criminal,[fn] we wouldn't have handed him over to you.”

Jesus answered, “Are you asking this on your own, or have others told you about me? ”

“You would have no authority over me at all,” Jesus answered him, “if it hadn't been given you from above. This is why the one who handed me over to you has the greater sin.”

“Truly I tell you, when you were younger, you would tie your belt and walk wherever you wanted. But when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands and someone else will tie you and carry you where you don't want to go.”

But Peter said, “I don't have silver or gold, but what I do have, I give you: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, get up and walk! ”

“and said to him: Leave your country and relatives, and come to the land that I will show you.

“You have no part or share in this matter, because your heart is not right before God.

“But get up and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do.”

Ananias went and entered the house. He placed his hands on him and said, “Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road you were traveling, has sent me so that you may regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.”

“So I immediately sent for you, and it was good of you to come. So now we are all in the presence of God to hear everything you have been commanded by the Lord.”

She did this for many days.

Paul was greatly annoyed. Turning to the spirit, he said, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her! ” And it came out right away.

“For I am with you, and no one will lay a hand on you to hurt you, because I have many people in this city.”

“Therefore do what we tell you: We have four men who have made a vow.

“I said, ‘What should I do, Lord? '

“The Lord told me, ‘Get up and go into Damascus, and there you will be told everything that you have been assigned to do.'

So he took him, brought him to the commander, and said, “The prisoner Paul called me and asked me to bring this young man to you, because he has something to tell you.”

“Neither can they prove the charges they are now making against me.

Agrippa said to Paul, “You have permission to speak for yourself.”

Then Paul stretched out his hand and began his defense:

“We all fell to the ground, and I heard a voice speaking to me in Aramaic,[fn] ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me? It is hard for you to kick against the goads.'

“But get up and stand on your feet. For I have appeared to you for this purpose, to appoint you as a servant and a witness of what you have seen and will see of me.

“and said, ‘Don't be afraid, Paul. It is necessary for you to appear before Caesar. And indeed, God has graciously given you all those who are sailing with you.'

Neither is it the case that all of Abraham's children are his descendants.[fn] On the contrary, your offspring will be traced[fn] through Isaac.

and so that Gentiles may glorify God for his mercy. As it is written,

Therefore I will praise you among the Gentiles,

and I will sing praise to your name.

Were you called while a slave? Don't let it concern you. But if you can become free, by all means take the opportunity.[fn]

For he says:

At an acceptable time I listened to you,

and in the day of salvation I helped you.

See, now is the acceptable time; now is the day of salvation!

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is perfected in weakness.”

Therefore, I will most gladly boast all the more about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may reside in me.

for what makes everything visible is light. Therefore it is said:

Get up, sleeper, and rise up from the dead,

and Christ will shine on you.

so that it may go well with you and that you may have a long life in the land.[fn]

Timothy, my son, I am giving you this instruction in keeping with the prophecies previously made about you, so that by recalling them you may fight the good fight,

I write these things to you, hoping to come to you soon.

Don't neglect the gift that is in you; it was given to you through prophecy, with the laying on of hands by the council of elders.

In the presence of God, who gives life to all, and of Christ Jesus, who gave a good confession before Pontius Pilate, I charge you

Consider what I say, for the Lord will give you understanding in everything.

The reason I left you in Crete was to set right what was left undone and, as I directed you, to appoint elders in every town.

For this reason, although I have great boldness in Christ to command you to do what is right,

Once he was useless to you, but now he is useful both to you and to me.

I, Paul, write this with my own hand: I will repay it ​— ​not to mention to you that you owe me even your very self.

Since I am confident of your obedience, I am writing to you, knowing that you will do even more than I say.

These serve as a copy and shadow of the heavenly things, as Moses was warned when he was about to complete the tabernacle. For God said, Be careful that you make everything according to the pattern that was shown to you on the mountain.

the one to whom it had been said, Your offspring[fn] will be traced through Isaac.

But someone will say, “You have faith, and I have works.”[fn] Show me your faith without works, and I will show you faith by my works.

So now I ask you, dear lady ​— ​not as if I were writing you a new command, but one we have had from the beginning ​— ​that we love one another.

I have many things to write you, but I don't want to write to you with pen and ink.

Peace to you. The friends send you greetings. Greet the friends by name.

Yet when Michael the archangel was disputing with the devil in an argument about Moses's body, he did not dare utter a slanderous condemnation against him but said, “The Lord rebuke you! ”

“Remember then how far you have fallen; repent, and do the works you did at first. Otherwise, I will come to you[fn] and remove your lampstand from its place, unless you repent.

“Don't be afraid of what you are about to suffer. Look, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison to test you, and you will experience affliction for ten days. Be faithful to the point of death, and I will give you the crown[fn] of life.

“So repent! Otherwise, I will come to you quickly and fight against them with the sword of my mouth.

“I advise you to buy from me gold refined in the fire so that you may be rich, white clothes so that you may be dressed and your shameful nakedness not be exposed, and ointment to spread on your eyes so that you may see.

After this I looked, and there in heaven was an open door. The first voice that I had heard speaking to me like a trumpet said, “Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after this.”

saying,

We give you thanks, Lord God, the Almighty,

who is and who was,[fn]

because you have taken your great power

and have begun to reign.

Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls came and spoke with me: “Come, I will show you the judgment of the notorious prostitute[fn] who is seated on many[fn] waters.

Then the angel said to me, “Why are you astonished? I will explain to you the mystery of the woman and of the beast, with the seven heads and the ten horns, that carries her.

Then one of the seven angels, who had held the seven bowls filled with the seven last plagues, came and spoke with me: “Come, I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb.”
