“And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,

are by no means least among the rulers of Judah:

Because out of you will come a ruler

who will shepherd my people Israel.”

But John tried to stop him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and yet you come to me? ”

and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down. For it is written:

He will give his angels orders concerning you,

and they will support you with their hands

so that you will not strike

your foot against a stone.”

“So if you are offering your gift on the altar, and there you remember that your brother or sister has something against you,

“If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of the parts of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.

“Give to the one who asks you, and don't turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.

“But when you give to the poor, don't let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,

“Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the splinter out of your eye,' and look, there's a beam of wood in your own eye?

Then some of the scribes and Pharisees said to him, “Teacher, we want to see a sign from you.”

“But, so we won't offend them, go to the sea, cast in a fishhook, and take the first fish that you catch. When you open its mouth you'll find a coin.[fn] Take it and give it to them for me and you.”

“If your hand or your foot causes you to fall away, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life maimed or lame than to have two hands or two feet and be thrown into the eternal fire.

“If your brother sins against you,[fn] go tell him his fault, between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have won your brother.

Seeing a lone fig tree by the road, he went up to it and found nothing on it except leaves. And he said to it, “May no fruit ever come from you again! ” At once the fig tree withered.

He said to it, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again! ” And his disciples heard it.

And the angel came to her and said, “Greetings, favored woman! The Lord is with you.”[fn]

“and a sword will pierce your own soul ​— ​that the thoughts[fn] of many hearts may be revealed.”

“If you, then, will worship me,[fn] all will be yours.”

“For it is written:

He will give his angels orders concerning you,

to protect you,

“Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take out the splinter that is in your eye,' when you yourself don't see the beam of wood in your eye? Hypocrite! First take the beam of wood out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to take out the splinter in your brother's eye.

“But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life is demanded of you. And the things you have prepared ​— ​whose will they be? '

“So he called the manager in and asked, ‘What is this I hear about you? Give an account of your management, because you can no longer be my manager.'

“But I have prayed for you[fn] that your faith may not fail. And you, when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.”

So they came to John and told him, “Rabbi, the one you testified about, and who was with you across the Jordan, is baptizing ​— ​and everyone is going to him.”

So his brothers said to him, “Leave here and go to Judea so that your disciples can see your works that you are doing.

Jesus answered, “You have seen him; in fact, he is the one speaking with you.”

“Lord,” Peter asked, “why can't I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.”

“Now they know that everything you have given me is from you,

They said, “Cornelius, a centurion, an upright and God-fearing man, who has a good reputation with the whole Jewish nation, was divinely directed by a holy angel to call you to his house and to hear a message from you.”

They took him and brought him to the Areopagus,[fn] and said, “May we learn about this new teaching you are presenting?

“For I am with you, and no one will lay a hand on you to hurt you, because I have many people in this city.”

“But they have been informed about you ​— ​that you are teaching all the Jews who are among the Gentiles to abandon Moses, telling them not to circumcise their children or to live according to our customs.

“Take these men, purify yourself along with them, and pay for them to get their heads shaved. Then everyone will know that what they were told about you amounts to nothing, but that you yourself are also careful about observing the law.

“Don't let them persuade you, because there are more than forty of them lying in ambush ​— ​men who have bound themselves under a curse not to eat or drink until they have killed him. Now they are ready, waiting for your consent.”

When I was informed that there was a plot against the man,[fn] I sent him to you right away. I also ordered his accusers to state their case against him in your presence.[fn]

When Paul was called in, Tertullus began to accuse him and said, “We enjoy great peace because of you, and reforms are taking place for the benefit of this nation because of your foresight.

“It is they who ought to be here before you to bring charges, if they have anything against me.

“I have nothing definite to write to my lord about him. Therefore, I have brought him before all of you, and especially before you, King Agrippa, so that after this examination is over, I may have something to write.

“I consider myself fortunate that it is before you, King Agrippa, I am to make my defense today against all the accusations of the Jews,

“and said, ‘Don't be afraid, Paul. It is necessary for you to appear before Caesar. And indeed, God has graciously given you all those who are sailing with you.'

Then they said to him, “We haven't received any letters about you from Judea. None of the brothers has come and reported or spoken anything evil about you.

As it is written:

Because of you

we are being put to death all day long;

we are counted as sheep to be slaughtered.

because if God did not spare the natural branches, he will not spare you either.

I thank God, whom I serve with a clear conscience as my ancestors did, when I constantly remember you in my prayers night and day.

For I have great joy and encouragement from your love, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed through you, brother.

I wanted to keep him with me, so that in my imprisonment for the gospel he might serve me in your place.

“But I have this against you: You have abandoned the love you had at first.

“But I have a few things against you. You have some there who hold to the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to place a stumbling block[fn] in front of the Israelites: to eat meat sacrificed to idols and to commit sexual immorality.

“But I have this against you: You tolerate the woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess and teaches and deceives my servants to commit sexual immorality and to eat meat sacrificed to idols.

The fruit you craved has left you.

All your splendid and glamorous things are gone;

they will never find them again.
