“If your brother sins against you,[fn] go tell him his fault, between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have won your brother.
“Go into the city to a certain man,” he said, “and tell him, ‘The Teacher says: My time is near; I am celebrating the Passover at your place[fn] with my disciples.' ”
The angel answered him, “I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God, and I was sent to speak to you and tell you this good news.
“That is why I didn't even consider myself worthy to come to you. But say the word, and my servant will be healed.[fn]
When the men reached him, they said, “John the Baptist sent us to ask you, ‘Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else? ' ”
“The one who invited both of you may come and say to you, ‘Give your place to this man,' and then in humiliation, you will proceed to take the lowest place.
“And if he sins against you seven times in a day, and comes back to you seven times, saying, ‘I repent,' you must forgive him.”
“For the days will come on you when your enemies will build a barricade around you, surround you, and hem you in on every side.
“This is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and the one you have sent — Jesus Christ.
“I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect[fn] them by your name that you have given me, so that they may be one as we are one.
“Now I am coming to you, and I speak these things in the world so that they may have my joy completed in them.
“I wish before God,” replied Paul, “that whether easily or with difficulty,[fn] not only you but all who listen to me today might become as I am — except for these chains.”
A man who is physically uncircumcised, but who keeps the law, will judge you who are a lawbreaker in spite of having the letter of the law and circumcision.
Therefore, consider God's kindness and severity: severity toward those who have fallen but God's kindness toward you — if you remain in his kindness. Otherwise you too will be cut off.
For if someone sees you, the one who has knowledge, dining in an idol's temple, won't his weak conscience be encouraged[fn] to eat food offered to idols?
Timothy, my son, I am giving you this instruction in keeping with the prophecies previously made about you, so that by recalling them you may fight the good fight,
