“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt should lose its taste, how can it be made salty?[fn] It's no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled under people's feet.
“Therefore, you should pray like this:
Our Father in heaven,
your name be honored as holy.
“Consider the birds of the sky: They don't sow or reap or gather into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Aren't you worth more than they?
“If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask him.
“Therefore, whatever you want others to do for you, do also the same for them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.
“because it isn't you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father is speaking through you.
“But you say, ‘Whoever tells his father or mother, “Whatever benefit you might have received from me is a gift committed to the temple,”
Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, in the renewal of all things, when the Son of Man sits on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
“He said to them, ‘You also go into my vineyard, and I'll give you whatever is right.' So off they went.
“ ‘Because no one hired us,' they said to him.
“ ‘You also go into my vineyard,' he told them.[fn]
He said to them, “It is written, my house will be called a house of prayer, but you are making it a den of thieves! ”
“For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you didn't believe him. Tax collectors and prostitutes did believe him; but you, when you saw it, didn't even change your minds then and believe him.
“But you are not to be called ‘Rabbi,' because you have one Teacher,[fn] and you are all brothers and sisters.
“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You shut the door of the kingdom of heaven in people's faces. For you don't go in, and you don't allow those entering to go in.[fn]
“In the same way, on the outside you seem righteous to people, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.
“This is why you are also to be ready, because the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.
Then Jesus said to them, “Tonight all of you will fall away because of me, for it is written:
I will strike the shepherd,
and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.
When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that a riot was starting instead, he took some water, washed his hands in front of the crowd, and said, “I am innocent of this man's blood.[fn] See to it yourselves! ”
The angel told the women, “Don't be afraid, because I know you are looking for Jesus who was crucified.
He said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a remote place and rest for a while.” For many people were coming and going, and they did not even have time to eat.
“You give them something to eat,” he responded.
They said to him, “Should we go and buy two hundred denarii[fn] worth of bread and give them something to eat? ”
“But you say, ‘If anyone tells his father or mother: Whatever benefit you might have received from me is corban' ” (that is, an offering devoted to God),
He said to them, “Are you also as lacking in understanding? Don't you realize that nothing going into a person from the outside can defile him?
“But you,” he asked them, “who do you say that I am? ”
Peter answered him, “You are the Messiah.”
He was teaching them: “Is it not written, My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations? But you have made it a den of thieves! ”
“But you, be on your guard! They will hand you over to local courts,[fn] and you will be flogged in the synagogues. You will stand before governors and kings because of me, as a witness to them.
“So when they arrest you and hand you over, don't worry beforehand what you will say, but say whatever is given to you at that time, for it isn't you speaking, but the Holy Spirit.
“You give them something to eat,” he told them.
“We have no more than five loaves and two fish,” they said, “unless we go and buy food for all these people.”
“But you,” he asked them, “who do you say that I am? ”
Peter answered, “God's Messiah.”
“Let these words sink in:[fn] The Son of Man is about to be betrayed into the hands of men.”
“For I tell you that many prophets and kings wanted to see the things you see but didn't see them; to hear the things you hear but didn't hear them.”
“If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him? ”
But the Lord said to him, “Now you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside you are full of greed and evil.
“Consider the ravens: They don't sow or reap; they don't have a storeroom or a barn; yet God feeds them. Aren't you worth much more than the birds?
“Don't strive for what you should eat and what you should drink, and don't be anxious.
“You are to be like people waiting for their master to return from the wedding banquet so that when he comes and knocks, they can open the door for him at once.
And he told them, “You are the ones who justify yourselves in the sight of others, but God knows your hearts. For what is highly admired by people is revolting in God's sight.
“In the same way, when you have done all that you were commanded, you should say, ‘We are unworthy servants; we've only done our duty.' ”
and he said, “It is written, my house will be a house of prayer, but you have made it a den of thieves! ”
“In the same way, when you see these things happening, recognize[fn] that the kingdom of God is near.
“It is not to be like that among you. On the contrary, whoever is greatest among you should become like the youngest, and whoever leads, like the one serving.
They all asked, “Are you, then, the Son of God? ”
And he said to them, “You say that I am.”
“I baptize with[fn] water,” John answered them. “Someone stands among you, but you don't know him.
“You yourselves can testify that I said, ‘I am not the Messiah, but I've been sent ahead of him.'
“Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews say that the place to worship is in Jerusalem.”
“You Samaritans worship what you do not know. We worship what we do know, because salvation is from the Jews.
“I sent you to reap what you didn't labor for; others have labored, and you have benefited from[fn] their labor.”
“For the Father loves the Son and shows him everything he is doing, and he will show him greater works than these so that you will be amazed.
“John[fn] was a burning and shining lamp, and you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light.
“You pore over the Scriptures because you think you have eternal life in them, and yet they testify about me.
“How can you believe, since you accept glory from one another but don't seek the glory that comes from the only God?
“Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father. Your accuser is Moses, on whom you have set your hope.
“Go up to the festival yourselves. I'm not going up to this festival,[fn] because my time has not yet fully come.”
As he was teaching in the temple, Jesus cried out, “You know me and you know where I am from. Yet I have not come on my own, but the one who sent me is true. You don't know him;
“What is this remark he made: ‘You will look for me, and you will not find me; and where I am, you cannot come'? ”
“Even if I testify about myself,” Jesus replied, “my testimony is true, because I know where I came from and where I'm going. But you don't know where I come from or where I'm going.
Then he said to them again, “I'm going away; you will look for me, and you will die in your sin. Where I'm going, you cannot come.”
So the Jews said again, “He won't kill himself, will he, since he says, ‘Where I'm going, you cannot come'? ”
“You are from below,” he told them, “I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world.
Then Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you continue in my word,[fn] you really are my disciples.
“I speak what I have seen in the presence of the Father;[fn] so then, you do what you have heard from your father.”
“You're doing what your father does.”
“We weren't born of sexual immorality,” they said. “We have one Father — God.”
“You are of your father the devil, and you want to carry out your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he tells a lie, he speaks from his own nature,[fn] because he is a liar and the father of lies.
“Who among you can convict me of sin? If I am telling the truth, why don't you believe me?
“The one who is from God listens to God's words. This is why you don't listen, because you are not from God.”
“I do not have a demon,” Jesus answered. “On the contrary, I honor my Father and you dishonor me.
“If I glorify myself,” Jesus answered, “my glory is nothing. My Father — about whom you say, ‘He is our God' — he is the one who glorifies me.
They asked them, “Is this your son, the one you say was born blind? How then does he now see? ”
“I already told you,” he said, “and you didn't listen. Why do you want to hear it again? You don't want to become his disciples too, do you? ”
“This is an amazing thing! ” the man told them. “You don't know where he is from, and yet he opened my eyes.
“do you say, ‘You are blaspheming' to the one the Father set apart and sent into the world, because I said: I am the Son of God?
One of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all!
“One who has bathed,” Jesus told him, “doesn't need to wash anything except his feet, but he is completely clean. You are clean, but not all of you.”
“You call me Teacher and Lord — and you are speaking rightly, since that is what I am.
“So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet.
“For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done for you.
“Little children, I am with you a little while longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so now I tell you, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come.'
“I give you a new command: Love one another. Just as I have loved you, you are also to love one another.
“If I go away and prepare a place for you, I will come again and take you to myself, so that where I am you may be also.
“He is the Spirit of truth. The world is unable to receive him because it doesn't see him or know him. But you do know him, because he remains with you and will be[fn] in you.
“In a little while the world will no longer see me, but you will see me. Because I live, you will live too.
“Remain in me, and I in you. Just as a branch is unable to produce fruit by itself unless it remains on the vine, neither can you unless you remain in me.
“I am the vine; you are the branches. The one who remains in me and I in him produces much fruit, because you can do nothing without me.
“You did not choose me, but I chose you. I appointed you to go and produce fruit and that your fruit should remain, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he will give you.
“Truly I tell you, you will weep and mourn, but the world will rejoice. You will become sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn to joy.
“So you also have sorrow[fn] now. But I will see you again. Your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy from you.
“For the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God.[fn]
Pilate told them, “You take him and judge him according to your law.”
“It's not legal for us to put anyone to death,” the Jews declared.
When the chief priests and the temple servants[fn] saw him, they shouted, “Crucify! Crucify! ”
Pilate responded, “Take him and crucify him yourselves, since I find no grounds for charging him.”
He who saw this has testified so that you also may believe. His testimony is true, and he knows he is telling the truth.
“for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit in a few days.”
“For these people are not drunk, as you suppose, since it's only nine in the morning.[fn]
“Therefore, since he has been exalted to the right hand of God and has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit, he has poured out what you both see and hear.
“Therefore let all the house of Israel know with certainty that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah.”
“The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the God of our ancestors, has glorified his servant Jesus, whom you handed over and denied before Pilate, though he had decided to release him.
“You are the sons[fn] of the prophets and of the covenant that God made with your ancestors, saying to Abraham, And all the families of the earth will be blessed through your offspring.
After they had Peter and John stand before them, they began to question them: “By what power or in what name have you done this? ”
“let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified and whom God raised from the dead — by him this man is standing here before you healthy.
“The God of our ancestors raised up Jesus, whom you had murdered by hanging him on a tree.
“Then he left the land of the Chaldeans and settled in Haran. From there, after his father died, God had him move to this land in which you are now living.
“You stiff-necked people with uncircumcised hearts and ears! You are always resisting the Holy Spirit. As your ancestors did, you do also.
“Which of the prophets did your ancestors not persecute? They even killed those who foretold the coming of the Righteous One, whose betrayers and murderers you have now become.
“Pray to the Lord for me,” Simon replied, “so that nothing you have said may happen to me.”
Peter said to them, “You know it's forbidden for a Jewish man to associate with or visit a foreigner, but God has shown me that I must not call any person impure or unclean.
“You know the events that took place throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee after the baptism that John preached:
“I remembered the word of the Lord, how he said, ‘John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.'
After there had been much debate, Peter stood up and said to them, “Brothers, you are aware that in the early days God made a choice among you,[fn] that by my mouth the Gentiles would hear the gospel message and believe.
The evil spirit answered them, “I know Jesus, and I recognize Paul — but who are you? ”
When they came to him, he said to them, “You know, from the first day I set foot in Asia, how I was with you the whole time,
“And now I know that none of you, among whom I went about preaching the kingdom, will ever see me again.
He continued, “I am a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia but brought up in this city, educated at the feet of Gamaliel according to the strictness of our ancestral law. I was zealous for God, just as all of you are today.
“So now you, along with the Sanhedrin, make a request to the commander that he bring him down to you[fn] as if you were going to investigate his case more thoroughly. But, before he gets near, we are ready to kill him.”
Paul said to the centurion and the soldiers, “Unless these men stay in the ship, you cannot be saved.”
Therefore, my brothers and sisters, you also were put to death in relation to the law through the body of Christ so that you may belong to another. You belong to him who was raised from the dead in order that we may bear fruit for God.
You, however, are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. If anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to him.
And it will be in the place where they were told,
you are not my people,
there they will be called sons of the living God.
Now I urge you, brothers and sisters, to watch out for those who create divisions and obstacles contrary to the teaching that you learned. Avoid them,
It is from him that you are in Christ Jesus, who became wisdom from God for us — our righteousness, sanctification, and redemption —
If anyone destroys God's temple, God will destroy him; for God's temple is holy, and that is what you are.
We are fools for Christ, but you are wise in Christ! We are weak, but you are strong! You are distinguished, but we are dishonored!
And you are arrogant! Shouldn't you be filled with grief and remove from your congregation the one who did this?
For what business is it of mine to judge outsiders? Don't you judge those who are inside?
Instead, you yourselves do wrong and cheat — and you do this to brothers and sisters!
Am I not free? Am I not an apostle? Have I not seen Jesus our Lord? Are you not my work in the Lord?
If I am not an apostle to others, at least I am to you, because you are the seal of my apostleship in the Lord.
In the same way, unless you use your tongue for intelligible speech, how will what is spoken be known? For you will be speaking into the air.
So also you — since you are zealous for spiritual gifts,[fn] seek to excel in building up the church.
Now about the collection for the saints: Do the same as I instructed the Galatian churches.
and perhaps I will remain with you or even spend the winter, so that you may send me on my way wherever I go.
just as you have partially understood us — that we are your reason for pride, just as you also are ours in the day of our[fn] Lord Jesus.
And I will be a Father to you,
and you will be sons and daughters to me,
says the Lord Almighty.
For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ: Though he was rich, for your sake he became poor, so that by his poverty you might become rich.
Otherwise, if any Macedonians come with me and find you unprepared, we, not to mention you, would be put to shame in that situation.[fn]
Or did I commit a sin by humbling myself so that you might be exalted, because I preached the gospel of God to you free of charge?
I have been a fool; you forced it on me. You ought to have commended me, since I am not in any way inferior to those “super-apostles,” even though I am nothing.
But we pray to God that you do nothing wrong — not that we may appear to pass the test, but that you may do what is right, even though we may appear to fail.
We rejoice when we are weak and you are strong. We also pray that you become fully mature.[fn]
There is no Jew or Greek, slave or free, male and female; since you are all one in Christ Jesus.
And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's seed, heirs according to the promise.
I beg you, brothers and sisters: Become as I am, for I also have become as you are. You have not wronged me;
For you were called to be free, brothers and sisters; only don't use this freedom as an opportunity[fn] for the flesh, but serve one another through love.
Brothers and sisters, if someone is overtaken in any wrongdoing, you who are spiritual, restore such a person with a gentle spirit,[fn] watching out for yourselves so that you also won't be tempted.
In him you also were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and when you believed.
So, then, remember that at one time you were Gentiles in the flesh — called “the uncircumcised” by those called “the circumcised,” which is done in the flesh by human hands.
But now in Christ Jesus, you who were far away have been brought near by the blood of Christ.
To sum up, each one of you is to love his wife as himself, and the wife is to respect her husband.
Tychicus, our dearly loved brother and faithful servant[fn] in the Lord, will tell you all the news about me so that you may be informed.
And you Philippians know that in the early days of the gospel, when I left Macedonia, no church shared with me in the matter of giving and receiving except you alone.
When Christ, who is your[fn] life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.
But now, put away all the following: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and filthy language from your mouth.
bearing with one another and forgiving one another if anyone has a grievance against another. Just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you are also to forgive.
Masters, deal with your slaves justly and fairly, since you know that you too have a Master in heaven.
After this letter has been read at your gathering, have it read also in the church of the Laodiceans; and see that you also read the letter from Laodicea.
and you yourselves became imitators of us and of the Lord when, in spite of severe persecution, you welcomed the message with joy from the Holy Spirit.
You are witnesses, and so is God, of how devoutly, righteously, and blamelessly we conducted ourselves with you believers.
For you, brothers and sisters, became imitators of God's churches in Christ Jesus that are in Judea, since you have also suffered the same things from people of your own country, just as they did from the Jews
For who is our hope or joy or crown of boasting in the presence of our Lord Jesus at his coming? Is it not you?
About brotherly love: You don't need me to write you because you yourselves are taught by God to love one another.
But you, brothers and sisters, are not in the dark, for this day to surprise you like a thief.
For you are all children of light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or the darkness.
so that the name of our Lord Jesus will be glorified by you, and you by him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Therefore, dear friends, since you know this in advance, be on your guard, so that you are not led away by the error of lawless people and fall from your own stable position.
what we have seen and heard we also declare to you, so that you may also have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ.
What you have heard from the beginning is to remain in you. If what you have heard from the beginning remains in you, then you will remain in the Son and in the Father.
As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you don't need anyone to teach you. Instead, his anointing teaches you about all things and is true and is not a lie; just as it has taught you,[fn] remain in him.
You are from God, little children, and you have conquered them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.
But you, dear friends, remember what was predicted by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ.
