“But whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to fall away ​— ​it would be better for him if a heavy millstone were hung around his neck and he were drowned in the depths of the sea.

Aware of this, Jesus said to them, “Why are you bothering this woman? She has done a noble thing for me.

Jesus replied, “Leave her alone. Why are you bothering her? She has done a noble thing for me.

The Spirit of the Lord is on me,

because he has anointed me

to preach good news to the poor.

to proclaim release[fn] to the captives

and recovery of sight to the blind,

to set free the oppressed,

“Every day while I was with you in the temple, you never laid a hand on me. But this is your hour ​— ​and the dominion of darkness.”

But turning to them, Jesus said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves and your children.

“Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me.

“The one who believes in me, as the Scripture has said, will have streams of living water flow from deep within him.”

Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, because I came from God and I am here. For I didn't come on my own, but he sent me.

“They will do these things because they haven't known the Father or me.

For even Christ did not please himself. On the contrary, as it is written, The insults of those who insult you have fallen on me.

Indeed, he was so sick that he nearly died. However, God had mercy on him, and not only on him but also on me, so that I would not have sorrow upon sorrow.
