“will ever see the land I swore to give their ancestors. None of those who have despised me will see it.
“‘Because they did not remain loyal to me, none of the men twenty years old or more who came up from Egypt will see the land I swore to give Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob —
“There you will worship man-made gods of wood and stone, which cannot see, hear, eat, or smell.
“Future generations of your children who follow you and the foreigner who comes from a distant country will see the plagues of that land and the sicknesses the LORD has inflicted on it.
“‘I will indeed gather you to your ancestors, and you will be gathered to your grave in peace. Your eyes will not see all the disaster that I am bringing on this place and on its inhabitants.' ”
Then they reported to the king.
And our enemies said, “They won't realize it[fn] until we're among them and can kill them and stop the work.”
He put a new song in my mouth,
a hymn of praise to our God.
Many will see and fear,
and they will trust in the LORD.
Also, they are afraid of heights and dangers on the road;
the almond tree blossoms,
the grasshopper loses its spring,[fn]
and the caper berry has no effect;
for the mere mortal is headed to his eternal home,
and mourners will walk around in the street;
They will not look to the altars they made with their hands or to the Asherahs and shrines[fn] they made with their fingers.
The Lord will give you meager bread and water during oppression, but your Teacher[fn] will not hide any longer. Your eyes will see your Teacher,
Look at Zion, the city of our festival times.
Your eyes will see Jerusalem,
a peaceful pasture, a tent that does not wander;
its tent pegs will not be pulled up
nor will any of its cords be loosened.
The voices of your watchmen —
they lift up their voices,
shouting for joy together;
for every eye will see
when the LORD returns to Zion.
The LORD has displayed his holy arm
in the sight of all the nations;
all the ends of the earth will see
the salvation of our God.
so he will sprinkle many nations.[fn]
Kings will shut their mouths because of him,
for they will see what had not been told them,
and they will understand what they had not heard.
Nations will see your righteousness
and all kings, your glory.
You will be given a new name
that the LORD's mouth will announce.
“Knowing[fn] their works and their thoughts, I have come to gather all nations and languages; they will come and see my glory.
“As they leave, they will see the dead bodies of those who have rebelled against me; for their worm will never die, their fire will never go out, and they will be a horror to all humanity.”
“for this is what the LORD says, ‘I am about to make you a terror to both yourself and those you love. They will fall by the sword of their enemies before your very eyes. I will hand Judah over to the king of Babylon, and he will deport them to Babylon and put them to the sword.
“this is what the LORD says: I am about to punish Shemaiah the Nehelamite and his descendants. There will not be even one of his descendants living among these people, nor will any ever see the good that I will bring to my people — this is the LORD's declaration — for he has preached rebellion against the LORD.' ”
“King Zedekiah of Judah will not escape from the Chaldeans; indeed, he will certainly be handed over to Babylon's king. They will speak face to face[fn] and meet eye to eye.
“As for you, you will not escape from him but are certain to be captured and handed over to him. You will meet the king of Babylon eye to eye and speak face to face;[fn] you will go to Babylon.
“I am therefore going to gather all the lovers you pleased — all those you loved as well as all those you hated. I will gather them against you from all around and expose your nakedness to them so they see you completely naked.
“I will display my glory among the nations, and all the nations will see the judgment I have executed and the hand I have laid on them.
After this
I will pour out my Spirit on all humanity;
then your sons and your daughters will prophesy,
your old men will have dreams,
and your young men will see visions.
Nations will see and be ashamed
of[fn] all their power.
They will put their hands over their mouths,
and their ears will become deaf.
“For who despises the day of small things? These seven eyes of the LORD, which scan throughout the whole earth, will rejoice when they see the ceremonial stone[fn] in Zerubbabel's hand.”
Ephraim will be like a warrior,
and their hearts will be glad as if with wine.
Their children will see it and be glad;
their hearts will rejoice in the LORD.
