He stayed there until Herod's death, so that what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet might be fulfilled: Out of Egypt I called my Son.
Then Herod, when he realized that he had been outwitted by the wise men, flew into a rage. He gave orders to massacre all the boys in and around Bethlehem who were two years old and under, in keeping with the time he had learned from the wise men.
But John tried to stop him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and yet you come to me? ”
“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt should lose its taste, how can it be made salty?[fn] It's no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled under people's feet.
“No one lights a lamp and puts it under a basket, but rather on a lampstand, and it gives light for all who are in the house.
“So whenever you give to the poor, don't sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be applauded by people. Truly I tell you, they have their reward.
“Lord,” the centurion replied, “I am not worthy to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed.
“For I too am a man under authority, having soldiers under my command.[fn] I say to this one, ‘Go,' and he goes; and to another, ‘Come,' and he comes; and to my servant, ‘Do this! ' and he does it.”
Suddenly, a violent storm arose on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by the waves — but Jesus kept sleeping.
“You will be hated by everyone because of my name. But the one who endures to the end will be saved.
As these men were leaving, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swaying in the wind?
“All things have been entrusted to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son desires[fn] to reveal him.
Prompted by her mother, she answered, “Give me John the Baptist's head here on a platter.”
“For there are eunuchs who were born that way from their mother's womb, there are eunuchs who were made by men, and there are eunuchs who have made themselves that way because of the kingdom of heaven. The one who is able to accept it should accept it.”
He told them, “You will indeed drink my cup,[fn] but to sit at my right and left is not mine to give; instead, it is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father.”
“Now concerning the resurrection of the dead, haven't you read what was spoken to you by God:
“Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her. How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks[fn] under her wings, but you were not willing!
“Then they will hand you over to be persecuted, and they will kill you. You will be hated by all nations because of my name.
In those days Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized in the Jordan by John.
He was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted by Satan. He was with the wild animals, and the angels were serving him.
He also said to them, “Is a lamp brought in to be put under a basket or under a bed? Isn't it to be put on a lampstand?
“And when sown, it comes up and grows taller than all the garden plants, and produces large branches, so that the birds of the sky can nest in its shade.”
had endured much under many doctors. She had spent everything she had and was not helped at all. On the contrary, she became worse.
Then he began to teach them that it was necessary for the Son of Man to suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests, and scribes, be killed, and rise after three days.
“You will be hated by everyone because of my name, but the one who endures to the end will be saved.
When the eight days were completed for his circumcision, he was named Jesus — the name given by the angel before he was conceived.
It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he saw the Lord's Messiah.
for forty days to be tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and when they were over, he was hungry.
Jesus went with them, and when he was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to tell him, “Lord, don't trouble yourself, since I am not worthy to have you come under my roof.
“For I too am a man placed under authority, having soldiers under my command. I say to this one, ‘Go,' and he goes; and to another, ‘Come,' and he comes; and to my servant, ‘Do this,' and he does it.”
After John's messengers left, he began to speak to the crowds about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swaying in the wind?
“As for the seed that fell among thorns, these are the ones who, when they have heard, go on their way and are choked with worries, riches, and pleasures of life, and produce no mature fruit.
For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. Many times it had seized him, and though he was guarded, bound by chains and shackles, he would snap the restraints and be driven by the demon into deserted places.
“No one lights a lamp and puts it in the cellar or under a basket,[fn] but on a lampstand, so that those who come in may see its light.
“Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her. How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing!
“One day the poor man died and was carried away by the angels to Abraham's side.[fn] The rich man also died and was buried.
When he was asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, he answered them, “The kingdom of God is not coming with something observable;
“For as the lightning flashes from horizon to horizon and lights up the sky, so the Son of Man will be in his day.
“You will even be betrayed by parents, brothers, relatives, and friends. They will kill some of you.
“When you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then recognize that its desolation has come near.
“How do you know me? ” Nathanael asked.
“Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you,” Jesus answered.
“The one who has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. And the one who loves me will be loved by my Father. I also will love him and will reveal myself to him.”
Now there were Jews staying in Jerusalem, devout people from every nation under heaven.
“There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to people by which we must be saved.”
In addition, a multitude came together from the towns surrounding Jerusalem, bringing the sick and those who were tormented by unclean spirits, and they were all healed.
Hearing this, they entered the temple at daybreak and began to teach.
When the high priest and those who were with him arrived, they convened the Sanhedrin — the full council of the Israelites — and sent orders to the jail to have them brought.
The crowds were all paying attention to what Philip said, as they listened and saw the signs he was performing.
While Peter was deeply perplexed about what the vision he had seen might mean, right away the men who had been sent by Cornelius, having asked directions to Simon's house, stood at the gate.
They said, “Cornelius, a centurion, an upright and God-fearing man, who has a good reputation with the whole Jewish nation, was divinely directed by a holy angel to call you to his house and to hear a message from you.”
“So I immediately sent for you, and it was good of you to come. So now we are all in the presence of God to hear everything you have been commanded by the Lord.”
“how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, and how he went about doing good and healing all who were under the tyranny of the devil, because God was with him.
“not by all the people, but by us whom God appointed as witnesses, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead.
“He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one appointed by God to be the judge of the living and the dead.
So being sent out by the Holy Spirit, they went down to Seleucia, and from there they sailed to Cyprus.
But when the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy and began to contradict what Paul was saying, insulting him.
When they had been sent on their way by the church, they passed through both Phoenicia and Samaria, describing in detail the conversion of the Gentiles, and they brought great joy to all the brothers and sisters.
But Paul chose Silas and departed, after being commended by the brothers and sisters to the grace of the Lord.
As they traveled through the towns, they delivered the decisions reached by the apostles and elders at Jerusalem for the people to observe.
They went through the region of Phrygia and Galatia; they had been forbidden by the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia.
A God-fearing woman named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth from the city of Thyatira, was listening. The Lord opened her heart to respond to what Paul was saying.
But when the Jews from Thessalonica found out that the word of God had been proclaimed by Paul at Berea, they came there too, agitating and upsetting[fn] the crowds.
They took him and brought him to the Areopagus,[fn] and said, “May we learn about this new teaching you are presenting?
“Neither is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives everyone life and breath and all things.
and stayed three months. The Jews plotted against him when he was about to set sail for Syria, and so he decided to go back through Macedonia.
When Paul got to the steps, he had to be carried by the soldiers because of the violence of the crowd,
“Since I couldn't see because of the brightness of the light,[fn] I was led by the hand by those who were with me, and went into Damascus.
“Someone named Ananias, a devout man according to the law, who had a good reputation with all the Jews living there,
The next day, since he wanted to find out exactly why Paul was being accused by the Jews, he released him[fn] and instructed the chief priests and all the Sanhedrin to convene. He brought Paul down and placed him before them.
When this man had been seized by the Jews and was about to be killed by them, I arrived with my troops and rescued him because I learned that he is a Roman citizen.
At the same time he was also hoping that Paul would offer him money.[fn] So he sent for him quite often and conversed with him.
Since they were staying there several days, Festus presented Paul's case to the king, saying, “There's a man who was left as a prisoner by Felix.
“I consider myself fortunate that it is before you, King Agrippa, I am to make my defense today against all the accusations of the Jews,
“the promise our twelve tribes hope to reach as they earnestly serve him night and day. King Agrippa, I am being accused by the Jews because of this hope.
But the centurion paid attention to the captain and the owner of the ship rather than to what Paul said.
But they struck a sandbar and ran the ship aground. The bow jammed fast and remained immovable, while the stern began to break up by the pounding of the waves.
Their throat is an open grave;
they deceive with their tongues.
Vipers' venom is under their lips.
But now, apart from the law, the righteousness of God has been revealed, attested by the Law and the Prophets.[fn]
What then? Should we sin because we are not under the law but under grace? Absolutely not!
For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am of the flesh,[fn] sold as a slave under sin.
Let everyone submit to the governing authorities, since there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are instituted by God.
Nevertheless, I have written to remind you more boldly on some points[fn] because of the grace given me by God
The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus be with you.
For it has been reported to me about you, my brothers and sisters, by members of Chloe's people, that there is rivalry among you.
Now we have not received the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who comes from God, so that we may understand what has been freely given to us by God.
It is of little importance to me that I should be judged by you or by any human court.[fn] In fact, I don't even judge myself.
Now about virgins:[fn] I have no command from the Lord, but I do give an opinion as one who by the Lord's mercy is faithful.
To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win Jews; to those under the law, like one under the law — though I myself am not under the law[fn] — to win those under the law.
Now I do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, that our ancestors were all under the cloud, all passed through the sea,
I do not mean your own conscience, but the other person's. For why is my freedom judged by another person's conscience?
but when we are judged by the Lord, we are disciplined, so that we may not be condemned with the world.
But if all are prophesying and some unbeliever or outsider comes in, he is convicted by all and is called to account by all.
For God has put everything under his feet. Now when it says “everything” is put under him, it is obvious that he who puts everything under him is the exception.
He comforts us in all our affliction,[fn] so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any kind of affliction, through the comfort we ourselves receive from God.
so that we may not be taken advantage of by Satan. For we are not ignorant of his schemes.
Indeed, we groan while we are in this tent, burdened as we are, because we do not want to be unclothed but clothed, so that mortality may be swallowed up by life.
And not only that, but he was also appointed by the churches to accompany us with this gracious gift that we are administering for the glory of the Lord himself and to show our eagerness to help.
For all who rely on the works of the law are under a curse, because it is written, Everyone who does not do everything written in the book of the law is cursed.
My point is this: The law, which came 430 years later, does not invalidate a covenant previously established by God[fn] and thus cancel the promise.
But the Scripture imprisoned everything under sin's power,[fn] so that the promise might be given on the basis of faith in Jesus Christ to those who believe.
Before this faith came, we were confined under the law, imprisoned until the coming faith was revealed.
In the same way we also, when we were children, were in slavery under the elements[fn] of the world.
When the time came to completion, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law,
But now, since you know God, or rather have become known by God, how can you turn back again to the weak and worthless elements? Do you want to be enslaved to them all over again?
And he subjected everything under his feet and appointed him[fn] as head over everything for the church,
So, then, remember that at one time you were Gentiles in the flesh — called “the uncircumcised” by those called “the circumcised,” which is done in the flesh by human hands.
not being frightened in any way by your opponents. This is a sign of destruction for them, but of your salvation — and this is from God.
Not that I have already reached the goal or am already perfect, but I make every effort to take hold of it because I also have been taken hold of by Christ Jesus.
if indeed you remain grounded and steadfast in the faith and are not shifted away from the hope of the gospel that you heard. This gospel has been proclaimed in all creation under heaven, and I, Paul, have become a servant of it.
Instead, just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, so we speak, not to please people, but rather God, who examines our hearts.
For you, brothers and sisters, became imitators of God's churches in Christ Jesus that are in Judea, since you have also suffered the same things from people of your own country, just as they did from the Jews
But we ought to thank God always for you, brothers and sisters loved by the Lord, because from the beginning[fn] God has chosen you for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and through belief in the truth.
All who are under the yoke as slaves should regard their own masters[fn] as worthy of all respect, so that God's name and his teaching will not be blasphemed.
how will we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? This salvation had its beginning when it was spoken of by the Lord, and it was confirmed to us by those who heard him.
No one takes this honor on himself; instead, a person is called by God, just as Aaron was.
For when every command had been proclaimed by Moses to all the people according to the law, he took the blood of calves and goats,[fn] along with water, scarlet wool, and hyssop, and sprinkled the scroll itself and all the people,
By faith Moses, after he was born, was hidden by his parents for three months, because they saw that the child was beautiful, and they didn't fear the king's edict.
For consider him who endured such hostility from sinners against himself, so that you won't grow weary and give up.
if you look with favor on the one wearing the fine clothes and say, “Sit here in a good place,” and yet you say to the poor person, “Stand over there,” or “Sit here on the floor by my footstool,”
If, however, you show favoritism, you commit sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors.
And consider ships: Though very large and driven by fierce winds, they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs.
And the tongue is a fire. The tongue, a world of unrighteousness, is placed[fn] among our members. It stains the whole body, sets the course of life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.
Above all, my brothers and sisters, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or with any other oath. But let your “yes” mean “yes,” and your “no” mean “no,” so that you won't fall under judgment.[fn]
As you come to him, a living stone — rejected by people but chosen and honored by[fn] God —
Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God, so that he may exalt you at the proper time,
For he received honor and glory from God the Father when the voice came to him from the Majestic Glory, saying “This is my beloved Son,[fn] with whom I am well-pleased! ”
because no prophecy ever came by the will of man; instead, men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.
These people are springs without water, mists driven by a storm. The gloom of darkness has been reserved for them.
so that you recall the words previously spoken by the holy prophets and the command of our Lord and Savior given through your apostles.
Everyone speaks well of Demetrius — even the truth itself. And we also speak well of him, and you know that our testimony is true.
and the angels who did not keep their own position but abandoned their proper dwelling, he has kept in eternal chains in deep darkness for the judgment on the great day.
These people are dangerous reefs[fn] at your love feasts as they eat with you without reverence. They are shepherds who only look after themselves. They are waterless clouds carried along by winds; trees in late autumn — fruitless, twice dead and uprooted.
But you, dear friends, remember what was predicted by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ.
