παγίς, παγίδος, ἡ (from πήγνυμι to make fast, 2 aorist ἐπαγον; properly, that which holds fast (cf. Anth. Pal. C, 5)), the Sept. for פַּח, רֶשֶׁת, מוקֵשׁ, etc.; a snare, trap, noose;
a. properly, of snares in which birds are entangled and caught, Proverbs 6:5; Proverbs 7:23; Psalm 90:3 (Ps. 91:3); Psalm 123:7 (Ps. 124:7); παγίδας ἱσταναι, Aristophanes av. 527; hence, ὡς παγίς, as a snare, i. e. unexpectedly, suddenly, because birds and beasts are caught unawares, Luke 21:35.
b. tropically, a snare, i. e. whatever brings peril, loss, destruction: of a sudden and unexpected deadly peril, Romans 11:9 from Psalm 68:23 (Ps. 69:23); of the allurements and seductions of sin, ἐμπίπτειν εἰς πειρασμόν καί παγίδα, 1 Timothy 6:9 (ἐμπίπτει εἰς παγίδα ἁμαρτωλός, Proverbs 12:13, cf. Proverbs 29:6; joined with σκάνδαλον, Wis. 14:11); τοῦ διαβόλου, the allurements to sin by which the devil holds one bound, 2 Timothy 2:26; 1 Timothy 3:7.
