“There was a rich man who would dress in purple and fine linen, feasting lavishly every day.
“ ‘No, father Abraham,’ he said. ‘But if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’
“But he told him, ‘If they don’t listen to Moses and the prophets, they will not be persuaded if someone rises from the dead.’ ”
He also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous and looked down on everyone else:
But Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, “Look, I’ll give half of my possessions to the poor, Lord. And if I have extorted anything from anyone, I’ll pay back four times as much.”
Therefore he said, “A nobleman traveled to a far country to receive for himself authority to be king[fn] and then to return.
Now he began to tell the people this parable: “A man planted a vineyard, leased it to tenant farmers, and went away for a long time.
Some of the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came up and questioned him:
“Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother has a wife, and dies childless, his brother should take the wife and produce offspring for his brother.
As some were talking about the temple, how it was adorned with beautiful stones and gifts dedicated to God, he said,
He also said to them, “When I sent you out without money-bag, traveling bag, or sandals, did you lack anything? ”
“Not a thing,” they said.
When a servant saw him sitting in the light, and looked closely at him, she said, “This man was with him too.”
About an hour later, another kept insisting, “This man was certainly with him, since he’s also a Galilean.”
Herod was very glad to see Jesus; for a long time he had wanted to see him because he had heard about him and was hoping to see some miracle[fn] performed by him.
(He had been thrown into prison for a rebellion that had taken place in the city, and for murder.)
As they led him away, they seized Simon, a Cyrenian, who was coming in from the country, and laid the cross on him to carry behind Jesus.
“Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but they didn’t see him.”
But while they still were amazed and in disbelief because of their joy, he asked them, “Do you have anything here to eat? ”
“Can anything good come out of Nazareth? ” Nathanael asked him.
“Come and see,” Philip answered.
and because he did not need anyone to testify about man; for he himself knew what was in man.
Jesus replied, “Truly I tell you, unless someone is born again,[fn] he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
Jesus answered, “Truly I tell you, unless someone is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.
The disciples said to one another, “Could someone have brought him something to eat? ”
He went again to Cana of Galilee, where he had turned the water into wine. There was a certain royal official whose son was ill at Capernaum.
After this, Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, “See, you are well. Do not sin anymore, so that something worse doesn’t happen to you.”
Jesus replied, “Truly I tell you, the Son is not able to do anything on his own, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father[fn] does, the Son likewise does these things.
Philip answered him, “Two hundred denarii[fn] worth of bread wouldn’t be enough for each of them to have a little.”
When they were full, he told his disciples, “Collect the leftovers so that nothing is wasted.”
“not that anyone has seen the Father except the one who is from God. He has seen the Father.
“This is the bread that comes down from heaven so that anyone may eat of it and not die.
“I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread he will live forever. The bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.”
“But there are some among you who don’t believe.” (For Jesus knew from the beginning those who did not[fn] believe and the one who would betray him.)
“For no one does anything in secret while he’s seeking public recognition. If you do these things, show yourself to the world.”
“If anyone wants to do his will, he will know whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking on my own.
Some of the people of Jerusalem were saying, “Isn’t this the man they are trying to kill?
On the last and most important day of the festival, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me[fn] and drink.
