Strong’s Definitions [?](Strong’s Definitions Legend)
γλῶσσα glōssa, gloce-sah'; of uncertain affinity; the tongue; by implication, a language (specially, one naturally unacquired):—tongue.
STRONGS G1100:
γλῶσσα, -ης, , [from Homer down], the tongue;
1. the tongue, a member of the body, the organ of speech: Mark 7:33, 35; Luke 1:64; Luke 16:24; 1 Corinthians 14:9; James 1:26; James 3:5, 6, 8; 1 Peter 3:10; 1 John 3:18; [Revelation 16:10]. By a poetic and rhetorical usage, especially Hebraistic, that member of the body which is chiefly engaged in some act has ascribed to it what belongs to the man; the tongue is so used in Acts 2:26 (ἠγαλλιάσατο γλῶσσά μου); Romans 3:13; Romans 14:11; Philippians 2:11 (the tongue of every man); of the little tongue-like flames symbolizing the gift of foreign tongues, in Acts 2:3.
2. a tongue, i. e. the language used by a particular people in distinction from that of other nations: Acts 2:11; hence, in later Jewish usage (Isaiah 66:18; Daniel 3:4; Daniel 5:19 Theodotion; Daniel 6:25; 7:14 Theodotion; Judith 3:8) joined with φυλή, λαός, ἔθνος, it serves to designate people of various languages [cf. Winer's Grammar, 32], Revelation 5:9; Revelation 7:9; Revelation 10:11; Revelation 11:9; Revelation 13:7; Revelation 14:6; Revelation 17:15. λαλεῖν ἑτέραις γλώσσαις to speak with other than their native i. e. in foreign tongues, Acts 2:4, cf. Acts 2:6-11; γλώσσαις λαλεῖν καιναῖς to speak with new tongues which the speaker has not learned previously, Mark 16:17 [but Tr text WH text omit; Tr marginal reading brackets καιναῖς]; cf. De Wette on Acts, p. 27ff [correct and supplement his references by Meyer on 1 Corinthians 12:10; cf. also B. D. under the word Tongues, Gift of]. From both these expressions must be carefully distinguished the simple phrases λαλεῖν γλώσσαις, γλώσσαις λαλεῖν, λαλεῖν γλώσσῃ, γλώσσῃ λαλεῖν (and προσεύχεσθαι γλώσσῃ, 1 Corinthians 14:14), to speak with (in) a tongue (the organ of speech), to speak with tongues; this, as appears from 1 Corinthians 14:7ff, is the gift of men who, rapt in an ecstasy and no longer quite masters of their own reason and consciousness, pour forth their glowing spiritual emotions in strange utterances, rugged, dark, disconnected, quite unfitted to instruct or to influence the minds of others: Acts 10:46; Acts 19:6; 1 Corinthians 12:30; 1 Corinthians 13:1; 1 Corinthians 14:2, 4-6, 13, 18, 23, 27, 39. The origin of the expression is apparently to be found in the fact, that in Hebrew the tongue is spoken of as the leading instrument by which the praises of God are proclaimed ( τῶν θείων ὕμνων μελῳδός, 4 Macc. 10:21, cf. Psalm 34:28 (Ps. 35:28); Psalms 65:17 (Ps. 66:17); Psalms 70:24 (Ps. 71:24); Psalm 125:2 (Ps. 126:2); Acts 2:26; Philippians 2:11; λαλεῖν ἐν γλώσσῃ, Psalm 38:4 (Ps. 39:4), and that according to the more rigorous conception of inspiration nothing human in an inspired man was thought to be active except the tongue, put in motion by the Holy Spirit (καταχρῆται ἕτερος αὐτοῦ τοῖς φωνητηρίοις ὀργάνοις, στόματι καὶ γλώττῃ πρὸς μήνυσιν ὧν ἂν θέλῃ, Philo, rer. div. haer. § 53 [i. 510, Mang. edition]); hence, the contrast διὰτοῦνοὸς [critical editions τῷ νοἲ) λαλεῖν, 1 Corinthians 14:19 cf. 1 Corinthians 14:9. The plural in the phrase γλώσσαις λαλεῖν, used even of a single person (1 Corinthians 14:5f), refers to the various motions of the tongue. By metonymy, of the cause for the effect, γλῶσσαι tongues are equivalent to λόγοι ἐν γλώσσῃ (1 Corinthians 14:19) words spoken in a tongue (Zungenvorträge): 1 Corinthians 13:8; 1 Corinthians 14:22; γένη γλωσσῶν, 1 Corinthians 12:10, 28, of which two kinds are mentioned viz. προσευχή and ψαλμός, 1 Corinthians 14:15; γλῶσσαν ἔχω, something to utter with a tongue, 1 Corinthians 14:26. [On 'Speaking with Tongues' see, in addition to the discussions above referred to, Wendt in the 5th edition of Meyer on Acts (Acts 2:4); Heinrici, Korinthierbriefe, i., 372ff; Schaff, Hist. of the Chr. Church, i. 234-245 (1882); Farrar, St. Paul, i. 95ff.]

Unchecked Copy Box1Co 12:28 - And God G2316 has [fn]appointed G5087 in the church, G1577 first G4413 apostles, G652 second G1208 prophets, G4396 third G5154 teachers, G1320 then G1899 [fn]miracles, G1411 then G1899 gifts G5486 of healings, G2386 helps, G484 administrations, G2941 various kinds G1085 of tongues. G1100
Unchecked Copy Box1Co 12:30 - All G3956 do not have G2192 gifts G5486 of healings, G2386 do they? All G3956 do not speak G2980 with tongues, G1100 do they? All G3956 do not interpret, G1329 do they?
Unchecked Copy Box1Co 13:1 - If G1437 I speak G2980 with the tongues G1100 of men G444 and of angels, G32 but do not have G2192 love, G26 I have become G1096 a noisy G2278 gong G5475 or G2228 a clanging G214 cymbal. G2950
Unchecked Copy Box1Co 13:8 - Love G26 never G3763 fails; G4098 but if G1535 there are gifts of [fn]prophecy, G4394 they will be done G2673 away; G2673 if G1535 there are tongues, G1100 they will cease; G3973 if G1535 there is knowledge, G1108 it will be done G2673 away. G2673
Unchecked Copy Box1Co 14:2 - For one who speaks G2980 in a tongue G1100 does not speak G2980 to men G444 but to God; G2316 for no G3762 one G3762 [fn]understands, G191 but [fn]in his spirit G4151 he speaks G2980 mysteries. G3466
Unchecked Copy Box1Co 14:4 - One who speaks G2980 in a tongue G1100 edifies G3618 himself; G1438 but one who prophesies G4395 edifies G3618 the church. G1577
Unchecked Copy Box1Co 14:5 - Now G1161 I wish G2309 that you all G3956 spoke G2980 in tongues, G1100 but even more G3123 that you would prophesy; G4395 and greater G3173 is one who prophesies G4395 than G2228 one who speaks G2980 in tongues, G1100 unless G1487 G3361 he interprets, G1329 so G2443 that the church G1577 may receive G2983 edifying. G3619
Unchecked Copy Box1Co 14:6 - But now, G3568 brethren, G80 if G1437 I come G2064 to you speaking G2980 in tongues, G1100 what G5101 will I profit G5623 you unless G1437 G3361 I speak G2980 to you either G2228 by way G1722 of revelation G602 or G2228 of knowledge G1108 or G2228 of prophecy G4394 or G2228 of teaching? G1322
Unchecked Copy Box1Co 14:9 - So G3779 also G2532 you, unless G1437 G3361 you utter G1325 by the tongue G1100 speech G3056 that is clear, G2154 how G4459 will it be known G1097 what is spoken? G2980 For you will be speaking G2980 into the air. G109
Unchecked Copy Box1Co 14:13 - Therefore G1352 let one who speaks G2980 in a tongue G1100 pray G4336 that he may interpret. G1329
Unchecked Copy Box1Co 14:14 - For if G1437 I pray G4336 in a tongue, G1100 my spirit G4151 prays, G4336 but my mind G3563 is unfruitful. G175
Unchecked Copy Box1Co 14:18 - I thank G2168 God, G2316 I speak G2980 in tongues G1100 more G3123 than you all; G3956
Unchecked Copy Box1Co 14:19 - however, G235 in the church G1577 I desire G2309 to speak G2980 five G4002 words G3056 with my mind G3563 so G2443 that I may instruct G2727 others G243 also, G2532 rather G2228 than G2228 ten G3463 thousand G3463 words G3056 in a tongue. G1100
Unchecked Copy Box1Co 14:22 - So G5620 then G5620 tongues G1100 are for a sign, G4592 not to those G3588 who believe G4100 but to unbelievers; G571 but prophecy G4394 is for a sign, not to unbelievers G571 but to those G3588 who believe. G4100
Unchecked Copy Box1Co 14:23 - Therefore G3767 if G1437 the whole G3650 church G1577 assembles G4905 together G1909 G3588 G846 and all G3956 speak G2980 in tongues, G1100 and [fn]ungifted G2399 men G2399 or G2228 unbelievers G571 enter, G1525 will they not say G3004 that you are mad? G3105
Unchecked Copy Box1Co 14:26 - What G5101 is the outcome then, G3767 brethren? G80 When G3752 you assemble, G4905 each G1538 one G1538 has G2192 a psalm, G5568 has G2192 a teaching, G1322 has G2192 a revelation, G602 has G2192 a tongue, G1100 has G2192 an interpretation. G2058 Let all G3956 things G3956 be done G1096 for edification. G3619
Unchecked Copy Box1Co 14:27 - If G1535 anyone G5100 speaks G2980 in a tongue, G1100 it should be by two G1417 or G2228 at the most G4183 three, G5140 and each in turn, G3313 and one G1520 must interpret; G1329
Unchecked Copy Box1Co 14:39 - Therefore, G5620 my brethren, G80 desire G2206 earnestly G2206 to prophesy, G4395 and do not forbid G2967 to speak G2980 in tongues. G1100
Unchecked Copy BoxPhl 2:11 - and that every G3956 tongue G1100 will confess G1843 that Jesus G2424 Christ G5547 is Lord, G2962 to the glory G1391 of God G2316 the Father. G3962
Unchecked Copy BoxJas 1:26 - If G1487 anyone G5100 thinks G1380 himself to be religious, G2357 and yet does not [fn]bridle G5468 his tongue G1100 but deceives G538 his own heart, G2588 this G3778 man’s G3778 religion G2356 is worthless. G3152
Unchecked Copy BoxJas 3:5 - So G3779 also G2532 the tongue G1100 is a small G3398 part G3196 of the body, and yet it boasts G3166 of great G3173 things. G3173 See G2400 how G2245 great G2245 a forest G5208 is set G381 aflame G381 by such G2245 a small G2245 fire! G4442
Unchecked Copy BoxJas 3:6 - And the tongue G1100 is a fire, G4442 the very world G2889 of iniquity; G93 the tongue G1100 is set G2525 among G1722 our members G3196 as that which defiles G4695 the entire G3650 body, G4983 and sets G5394 on fire G5394 the course G5164 of our [fn]life, G1078 and is set G5394 on fire G5394 by [fn]hell. G1067
Unchecked Copy BoxJas 3:8 - But no G3762 one G3762 G444 can G1410 tame G1150 the tongue; G1100 it is a restless G182 evil G2556 and full G3324 of deadly G2287 poison. G2447
Unchecked Copy Box1Pe 3:10 - For,
“THE ONE G3588 WHO DESIRES G2309 LIFE G2222, TO LOVE G25 AND SEE G3708 GOOD G18 DAYS G2250,
MUST KEEP G3973 HIS TONGUE G1100 FROM EVIL G2556 AND HIS LIPS G5491 FROM SPEAKING G2980 DECEIT G1388.
Unchecked Copy Box1Jo 3:18 - Little G5040 children, G5040 let us not love G25 with word G3056 or G3366 with tongue, G1100 but in deed G2041 and truth. G225
Unchecked Copy BoxRev 5:9 - And they *sang G103 a new G2537 song, G5603 saying, G3004 “Worthy G514 are You to take G2983 the [fn]book G975 and to break G455 its seals; G4973 for You were slain, G4969 and purchased G59 for God G2316 with Your blood G129 men from every G3956 tribe G5443 and tongue G1100 and people G2992 and nation. G1484
Unchecked Copy BoxRev 7:9 - After G3326 these G3778 things G3778 I looked, G3708 and behold, G2400 a great G4183 multitude G3793 which G3739 no G3762 one G3762 could G1410 count, G705 from every G3956 nation G1484 and all tribes G5443 and peoples G2992 and tongues, G1100 standing G2476 before G1799 the throne G2362 and before G1799 the Lamb, G721 clothed G4016 in white G3022 robes, G4749 and palm G5404 branches G5404 were in their hands; G5495
Unchecked Copy BoxRev 10:11 - And they *said G3004 to me, “You must G1163 prophesy G4395 again G3825 concerning G1909 many G4183 peoples G2992 and nations G1484 and tongues G1100 and kings.” G935
Unchecked Copy BoxRev 11:9 - Those from the peoples G2992 and tribes G5443 and tongues G1100 and nations G1484 will look G991 at their dead G4430 [fn]bodies G4430 for three G5140 and a half G2255 days, G2250 and [fn]will not permit G863 their dead G4430 bodies G4430 to be laid G5087 in a tomb. G3418
Unchecked Copy BoxRev 13:7 - It was also G2532 given G1325 to him to make G4160 war G4171 with the [fn]saints G40 and to overcome G3528 them, and authority G1849 over G1909 every G3956 tribe G5443 and people G2992 and tongue G1100 and nation G1484 was given G1325 to him.
Unchecked Copy BoxRev 14:6 - And I saw G3708 another G243 angel G32 flying G4072 in midheaven, G3321 having G2192 an eternal G166 gospel G2098 to preach G2097 to those G3588 who [fn]live G2521 on the earth, G1093 and to every G3956 nation G1484 and tribe G5443 and tongue G1100 and people; G2992
Unchecked Copy BoxRev 16:10 - Then G2532 the fifth G3991 angel poured G1632 out his bowl G5357 on the throne G2362 of the beast, G2342 and his kingdom G932 became G1096 darkened; G4656 and they gnawed G3145 their tongues G1100 because G1537 of pain, G4192
Unchecked Copy BoxRev 17:15 - And he *said G3004 to me, “The waters G5204 which G3739 you saw G3708 where G3757 the harlot G4204 sits, G2521 are peoples G2992 and multitudes G3793 and nations G1484 and tongues. G1100
