“For I have not spoken on my own, but the Father himself who sent me has given me a command to say everything I have said.
“I know that his command is eternal life. So the things that I speak, I speak just as the Father has told me.”
“Don’t you believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words I speak to you I do not speak on my own. The Father who lives in me does his works.
“I will not talk with you much longer, because the ruler of the world is coming. He has no power over me.[fn]
“I have told you these things so that my joy may be in you and your joy may be complete.
“If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin. Now they have no excuse for their sin.
“But I have told you these things so that when their time[fn] comes you will remember I told them to you. I didn’t tell you these things from the beginning, because I was with you.
“When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth. For he will not speak on his own, but he will speak whatever he hears. He will also declare to you what is to come.
They said, “What is this he is saying,[fn] ‘In a little while’? We don’t know what he’s talking about.”
“I have spoken these things to you in figures of speech. A time is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures, but I will tell you plainly about the Father.
His disciples said, “Look, now you’re speaking plainly and not using any figurative language.

Jesus spoke these things, looked up to heaven, and said, “Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son so that the Son may glorify you,
“Now I am coming to you, and I speak these things in the world so that they may have my joy completed in them.
“I have spoken openly to the world,” Jesus answered him. “I have always taught in the synagogue and in the temple, where all the Jews gather, and I haven’t spoken anything in secret.
“Why do you question me? Question those who heard what I told them. Look, they know what I said.”
“If I have spoken wrongly,” Jesus answered him, “give evidence[fn] about the wrong; but if rightly, why do you hit me? ”
So Pilate said to him, “Do you refuse to speak to me? Don’t you know that I have the authority to release you and the authority to crucify you? ”
Then they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues,[fn] as the Spirit enabled them.
When this sound occurred, a crowd came together and was confused because each one heard them speaking in his own language.
They were astounded and amazed, saying,[fn] “Look, aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans?
“Cretans and Arabs — we hear them declaring the magnificent acts of God in our own tongues.”
“Seeing what was to come, he spoke concerning the resurrection of the Messiah: He[fn] was not abandoned in Hades, and his flesh did not experience decay.
“Heaven must receive him until the time of the restoration of all things, which God spoke about through his holy prophets from the beginning.
“Moses said:[fn] The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your brothers. You must listen to everything he tells you.
“In addition, all the prophets who have spoken, from Samuel and those after him, have also foretold these days.
While they were speaking to the people, the priests, the captain of the temple police, and the Sadducees confronted them,
“But so that this does not spread any further among the people, let’s threaten them against speaking to anyone in this name again.”
“And now, Lord, consider their threats, and grant that your servants may speak your word with all boldness,
When they had prayed, the place where they were assembled was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak the word of God boldly.
After they called in the apostles and had them flogged, they ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus and released them.
But they were unable to stand up against his wisdom and the Spirit by whom he was speaking.
Then they secretly persuaded some men to say, “We heard him speaking blasphemous words against Moses and God.”
They also presented false witnesses who said, “This man never stops speaking against this holy place and the law.
“God spoke in this way: His descendants would be strangers in a foreign country, and they would enslave and oppress them for four hundred years.
“He is the one who was in the assembly in the wilderness, with the angel who spoke to him on Mount Sinai, and with our ancestors. He received living oracles to give to us.
“Our ancestors had the tabernacle of the testimony in the wilderness, just as he who spoke to Moses commanded him to make it according to the pattern he had seen.
So, after they had testified and spoken the word of the Lord, they traveled back to Jerusalem, preaching the gospel in many villages of the Samaritans.
An angel of the Lord spoke to Philip: “Get up and go south to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.” (This is the desert road.[fn])
Barnabas, however, took him and brought him to the apostles and explained to them how Saul had seen the Lord on the road and that the Lord had talked to him, and how in Damascus he had spoken boldly in the name of Jesus.
When the angel who spoke to him had gone, he called two of his household servants and a devout soldier, who was one of those who attended him.
