Strong’s Definitions [?](Strong’s Definitions Legend)
μᾶλλον mâllon, mal'-lon; neuter of the comparative of the same as G3122; (adverbially) more (in a greater degree)) or rather:—+ better, × far, (the) more (and more), (so) much (the more), rather.
STRONGS G3123:
μᾶλλον (comparitive of μάλα, very, very much) (from Homer down), adverb, more, to a greater degree; rather;
1. added to verbs and adjectives, it denotes increase, a greater quantity, a larger measure, a higher degree, more, more fully (German in höherem Grade, Maasse);
a. words defining the measure or size are joined to it in the ablative (dative): πολλῷ much, by far, Mark 10:48; Luke 18:39; Romans 5:15, 17 (in both these verses the underlying thought is, the measure of salvation for which we are indebted to Christ is far greater than that of the ruin which came from Adam; for the difference between the consequences traceable to Adam and to Christ is not only one of quality, but of quantity also; cf. Rückert, Commentary on Romans, vol. i. 281f (others (from Chrysostom to Meyer and Godet) content themselves here with a logical increase, far more certainly)); 2 Corinthians 3:9, 11; Philippians 2:12; πόσῳ how much, Luke 12:24; Romans 11:12; Philemon 1:16; Hebrews 9:14; τοσούτῳ by so much, ὅσῳ by as much (namely, μᾶλλον), Hebrews 10:25.
b. in comparison it often so stands that than before must be mentally added (A. V. the more, so much the more), as Matthew 27:24 (μᾶλλον θόρυβος γίνεται (but others refer this to 2 b. . below)); Luke 5:15 (διήρχετο μᾶλλον); John 5:18 (μᾶλλον ἐζήτουν); John 19:8; Acts 5:14; Acts 9:22; Acts 22:2; 2 Corinthians 7:7; 1 Thessalonians 4:1, 10; 2 Peter 1:10; ἔτι μᾶλλον καί μᾶλλον, Philippians 1:9; or the person or thing with which the comparison is made is evident from what precedes, as Philippians 3:4; it is added to comparatives, Mark 7:36; 2 Corinthians 7:13; πολλῷ μᾶλλον κρεῖσσον, Philippians 1:23; see (Wetstein on Philippians, the passage cited); Winers Grammar, § 35, 1 cf. 603 (561); (Buttmann, § 123, 11); to verbs that have a comparative force, μᾶλλον διαφέρειν τίνος, to be of much more value than one, Matthew 6:26. μᾶλλον , more than, Matthew 18:13; μᾶλλον with the genitive, πάντων ὑμῶν, 1 Corinthians 14:18 (Xenophon, mem. 3, 17, 1). joined to positive terms it forms a periphrasis for a comparative (cf. Winer's Grammar, § 35, 2 a.), followed by , as μακάριον, μᾶλλον for μακαριωτερον, Acts 20:35; add, 1 Corinthians 9:15; Galatians 4:27; πολλῷ μᾶλλον ἀναγκαῖά, 1 Corinthians 12:22; sometimes μᾶλλον, seems to be omitted before ; see under , 3 f.
c. μᾶλλον δέ, what moreover is of greater moment (A. V. yea rather): Romans 8:34 (2 Macc. 6:23).
2. it marks the preference of one thing above another, and is to be rendered rather, sooner (German eher, vielmehr, lieber);
a. it denotes that which occurs more easily than something else, and may be rendered sooner (German eher): thus πολλῷ μᾶλλον in arguing from the less to the greater, Matthew 6:30; Romans 5:9; Hebrews 12:9 (here L T Tr WH πολι μᾶλλον); also πολύ (R G πολλῷ) μᾶλλον namely, οὐκ ἐκφευξόμεθα, i. e. much more shall we not escape (cf. Winers Grammar, p. 633 (588) note (Buttmann, § 148, 3 b.)), or even ἔνδικον μισθαποδοσίαν ληψόμεθα (Hebrews 2:2), or something similar (cf. Matthiae, § 634, 3), Hebrews 12:25. πόσῳ μᾶλλον, Matthew 7:11; Matthew 10:25; Luke 12:28; Romans 11:12, 24; Philemon 1:16. in a question, οὐ μᾶλλον; (Latin nonne potius?) (do not... more), 1 Corinthians 9:12.
b. it is opposed to something else and does away with it; accordingly it may be rendered the rather (German vielmehr);
α. after a preceding negative or prohibitive sentence: Matthew 10:6, 28; Matthew 25:9; Mark 5:26; Romans 14:13; 1 Timothy 6:2; Hebrews 12:13; μᾶλλον δέ, Ephesians 4:28; Ephesians 5:11. οὐχί μᾶλλον; (nonne potius ?) not rather etc.? 1 Corinthians 5:2; 1 Corinthians 6:7.
β. so that μᾶλλον belongs to the thing which is preferred, consequently to a noun, not to a verb: John 3:19 (ἠγάπησαν μᾶλλον τό σκότος τό φῶς, i. e. when they ought to have loved the light they (hated it, and) loved the darkness, John 3:20); John 12:43; Acts 4:19; Acts 5:29; 2 Timothy 3:4 that which it opposes and sets aside must be learned from the context (cf. Winer's Grammar, § 35, 4): Mark 15:11 (namely, τόν Ἰησοῦν); Philippians 1:12 (where the meaning is, 'so far is the gospel from suffering any loss or disadvantage from my imprisonment, that the number of disciples is increased in consequence of it').
γ. by way of correction, μᾶλλον δέ, nay rather; to speak more correctly: Galatians 4:9 (Josephus, Antiquities 15, 11, 3; Aelian v. h. 2, 13 and often in secular authors; cf. Grimm, Exeg. Hdbch. on Sap., p. 176f).
c. it does not do away with that with which it is in opposition, but marks what has the preference: more willingly, more readily, sooner (German lieber), θέλω μᾶλλον and εὐδοκῶ μᾶλλον, to prefer, 1 Corinthians 14:5; 2 Corinthians 5:8 (βούλομαι μᾶλλον, Xenophon, Cyril 1, 1, 1); ζηλουν, 1 Corinthians 14:1 (μᾶλλον namely, ζηλοῦτε); χρωμαι, 1 Corinthians 7:21.

Unchecked Copy Box2Co 5:8 - we are of good G2292 courage, G2292 I say, and prefer G2106 rather G3123 to be absent G1553 from the body G4983 and to be at home G1736 with the Lord. G2962
Unchecked Copy Box2Co 7:7 - and not only G3440 by his coming, G3952 but also G2532 by the comfort G3874 with which G3739 he was comforted G3870 in you, as he reported G312 to us your longing, G1972 your mourning, G3602 your zeal G2205 for me; so G5620 that I rejoiced G5463 even more. G3123
Unchecked Copy Box2Co 7:13 - For this G3778 reason G1223 we have been comforted. G3870 And besides G1909 our comfort, G3874 we rejoiced G5463 even G4057 much G3123 more G4057 for the joy G5479 of Titus, G5103 because G3754 his spirit G4151 has been refreshed G373 by you all. G3956
Unchecked Copy Box2Co 12:9 - And He has said G3004 to me, “My grace G5485 is sufficient G714 for you, for power G1411 is perfected G5055 in weakness.” G769 Most G2234 gladly, G2234 therefore, G3767 I will rather G3123 boast G2744 [fn]about G1722 my weaknesses, G769 so G2443 that the power G1411 of Christ G5547 may dwell G1981 in me.
Unchecked Copy BoxGal 4:9 - But now G3568 that you have come to know G1097 God, G2316 or G1161 rather G3123 to be known G1097 by God, G2316 how G4459 is it that you turn G1994 back G1994 again G3825 to the weak G772 and worthless G4434 [fn]elemental G4747 things, G4747 to which G3739 you desire G2309 to be enslaved G1398 all G509 over G509 again? G3825

Unchecked Copy BoxEph 5:4 - and there must be no filthiness G151 and silly G3473 talk, G3473 or G2228 coarse G2160 jesting, G2160 which G3739 are not fitting, G433 but rather G3123 giving G2169 of thanks. G2169
Unchecked Copy BoxEph 5:11 - Do not participate G4790 in the unfruitful G175 deeds G2041 of darkness, G4655 but instead G3123 even G2532 [fn]expose G1651 them;
Unchecked Copy BoxPhl 1:9 - And this G3778 I pray, G4336 that your love G26 may abound G4052 still G2089 more G3123 and more G3123 in real G1922 knowledge G1922 and all G3956 discernment, G144
Unchecked Copy BoxPhl 1:12 - Now G1161 I want G1014 you to know, G1097 brethren, G80 that my circumstances G3588 G2596 have turned G2064 out for the greater G3123 progress G4297 of the gospel, G2098
Unchecked Copy BoxPhl 1:23 - But I am hard-pressed G4912 from both G1417 directions, having G2192 the desire G1939 to depart G360 and be with Christ, G5547 for that is very G4183 much G4183 better; G2909
Unchecked Copy BoxPhl 2:12 - So G5620 then, G5620 my beloved, G27 just G2531 as you have always G3842 obeyed, G5219 not as in my presence G3952 only, G3440 but now G3568 much G4183 more G3123 in my absence, G666 work G2716 out your salvation G4991 with fear G5401 and trembling; G5156
Unchecked Copy BoxPhl 3:4 - although G2539 I myself G1473 might have G2192 confidence G4006 even G2532 in the flesh. G4561 If G1487 anyone G5100 else G243 has G1380 a mind G1380 to put G3982 confidence G3982 in the flesh, G4561 I far more: G3123
Unchecked Copy Box1Th 4:1 - Finally G3062 then, G3767 brethren, G80 we request G2065 and exhort G3870 you in the Lord G2962 Jesus, G2424 that as you received G3880 from us instruction as to how G4459 you ought G1163 to [fn]walk G4043 and please G700 God G2316 (just G2531 as you actually G2532 do [fn]walk), G4043 that you excel G4052 still G3123 more. G3123
Unchecked Copy Box1Th 4:10 - for indeed G2532 you do practice G4160 it toward G1519 all G3956 the brethren G80 who G3588 are in all G3650 Macedonia. G3109 But we urge G3870 you, brethren, G80 to excel G4052 still G3123 more, G3123
Unchecked Copy Box1Ti 1:4 - nor G3366 to [fn]pay G4337 attention G4337 to myths G3454 and endless G562 genealogies, G1076 which G3748 give G3930 rise G3930 to mere speculation G6027 rather G3123 than G2228 furthering [fn]the administration G3622 of God G2316 which is by faith. G4102
Unchecked Copy Box1Ti 6:2 - Those G3588 who have G2192 believers G4103 as their masters G1203 must not be disrespectful G2706 to them because G3754 they are brethren, G80 but must serve G1398 them all G3123 the more, G3123 because G3754 those G3588 who [fn]partake G482 of the benefit G2108 are believers G4103 and beloved. G27 Teach G1321 and [fn]preach G3870 these G3778 principles.
Unchecked Copy Box2Ti 3:4 - treacherous, G4273 reckless, G4312 conceited, G5187 lovers G5369 of pleasure G5369 rather G3123 than G2228 lovers G5377 of God, G5377
Unchecked Copy BoxPhm 1:9 - yet for love’s G26 sake G1223 I rather G3123 appeal G3870 to you—since I am G1510 such G5108 a person G5108 as Paul, G3972 [fn]the aged, G4246 and now G3570 also G2532 a prisoner G1198 of Christ G5547 Jesus G2424
Unchecked Copy BoxPhm 1:16 - no G3765 longer G3765 as a slave, G1401 but more G5228 than G5228 a slave, G1401 a beloved G27 brother, G80 especially G3122 to me, but how G4214 much G4214 more G3123 to you, both G2532 in the flesh G4561 and in the Lord. G2962
Unchecked Copy BoxHeb 9:14 - how G4214 much G4214 more G3123 will the blood G129 of Christ, G5547 who G3739 through G1223 [fn]the eternal G166 Spirit G4151 offered G4374 Himself G1438 without G299 blemish G299 to God, G2316 cleanse G2511 [fn]your conscience G4893 from dead G3498 works G2041 to serve G3000 the living G2198 God? G2316
Unchecked Copy BoxHeb 10:25 - not forsaking G1459 our own G1438 assembling G1997 together, G1997 as is the habit G1485 of some, G5100 but encouraging G3870 one another; and all G5118 the more G3123 as you see G991 the day G2250 drawing G1448 near. G1448
Unchecked Copy BoxHeb 11:25 - choosing G138 rather G3123 to endure G4778 ill-treatment G4778 with the people G2992 of God G2316 than G2228 to enjoy G619 the passing G4340 pleasures G619 of sin, G266
Unchecked Copy BoxHeb 12:9 - Furthermore, G1534 we had G2192 [fn]earthly G4561 fathers G3962 to discipline G3810 us, and we respected G1788 them; shall we not much G4183 rather G3123 be subject G5293 to the Father G3962 of [fn]spirits, G4151 and live? G2198
Unchecked Copy BoxHeb 12:13 - and make G4160 straight G3717 paths G5163 for your feet, G4228 so G2443 that the limb which is lame G5560 may not be put G1624 out of joint, G1624 but rather G3123 be healed. G2390
Unchecked Copy BoxHeb 12:25 - See G991 to it that you do not refuse G3868 Him who is speaking. G2980 For if G1487 those G1565 did not escape G1628 when they refused G3868 him who warned G5537 them on earth, G1093 [fn]much G4183 less G3123 will we escape who turn G654 away G654 from Him who warns from heaven. G3772
Unchecked Copy Box2Pe 1:10 - Therefore, G1352 brethren, G80 be all G3123 the more G3123 diligent G4704 to make G4160 certain G949 about His calling G2821 and choosing G1589 you; for as long as you practice G4160 these G3778 things, G3778 you will never G3756 G3361 G4218 stumble; G4417
