For it has been granted to you on Christ’s behalf not only to believe in him, but also to suffer for him,
For it is God who is working in you both to will and to work according to his good purpose.
I rejoiced in the Lord greatly because once again you renewed your care for me. You were, in fact, concerned about me but lacked the opportunity to show it.
You learned this from Epaphras, our dearly loved fellow servant. He is a faithful minister of Christ on your[fn] behalf,
For this reason also, since the day we heard this, we haven’t stopped praying for you. We are asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding,[fn]
Now I rejoice in my sufferings for you, and I am completing in my flesh what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions for his body, that is, the church.
For I want you to know how greatly I am struggling for you, for those in Laodicea, and for all who have not seen me in person.
Epaphras, who is one of you, a servant of Christ Jesus, sends you greetings. He is always wrestling for you in his prayers, so that you can stand mature and fully assured[fn] in everything God wills.
For I testify about him that he works hard[fn] for you, for those in Laodicea, and for those in Hierapolis.
And we sent Timothy, our brother and God’s coworker[fn] in the gospel of Christ, to strengthen and encourage you concerning your faith,
who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him.
Therefore, we ourselves boast about you among God’s churches — about your perseverance and faith in all the persecutions and afflictions that you are enduring.
It is clear evidence of God’s righteous judgment that you will be counted worthy of God’s kingdom, for which you also are suffering,
Now concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered to him: We ask you, brothers and sisters,
First of all, then, I urge that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for everyone,
for kings and all those who are in authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity.
He gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to cleanse for himself a people for his own possession, eager to do good works.
I wanted to keep him with me, so that in my imprisonment for the gospel he might serve me in your place.
no longer as a slave, but more than a slave — as a dearly loved brother. He is especially so to me, but how much more to you, both in the flesh and in the Lord.
Since I am confident of your obedience, I am writing to you, knowing that you will do even more than I say.
But we do see Jesus — made lower than the angels for a short time so that by God’s grace he might taste death for everyone — crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death.
For the word of God is living and effective and sharper than any double-edged sword, penetrating as far as the separation of soul and spirit, joints and marrow. It is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
For every high priest taken from among men is appointed in matters pertaining to God for the people, to offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins.
Jesus has entered there on our behalf as a forerunner, because he has become a high priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.
Therefore, he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, since he always lives to intercede for them.
He doesn’t need to offer sacrifices every day, as high priests do — first for their own sins, then for those of the people. He did this once for all time when he offered himself.
But the high priest alone enters the second room, and he does that only once a year, and never without blood, which he offers for himself and for the sins the people had committed in ignorance.
For Christ did not enter a sanctuary made with hands (only a model[fn] of the true one) but into heaven itself, so that he might now appear in the presence of God for us.
But this man, after offering one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God.[fn]
Obey your leaders[fn] and submit to them, since they keep watch over your souls as those who will give an account, so that they can do this with joy and not with grief, for that would be unprofitable for you.
Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is very powerful in its effect.
For you were called to this, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps.
This is how we have come to know love: He laid down his life for us. We should also lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.
