STRONGS G599:
ἀποθνήσκω, imperfect ἀπέθνήσκον (Luke 8:42); 2 aorist ἀπέθανον; future ἀποθανοῦμαι, Romans 5:7; John 8:21, 24 (see θνήσκω); found in Greek writings from Homer down; to die (ἀπό, so as to be no more; [cf. Latin emorior; English die off or out, pass away); German absterben, versterben);
I. used properly
1. of the natural death of men: Matthew 9:24; Matthew 22:24; Luke 16:22; John 4:47; Romans 7:2, and very often; ἀποθνήσκοντες ἄνθρωποι subject to death, mortal, Hebrews 7:8 [Buttmann, 206 (178)].
2. of the violent death — both of animals, Matthew 8:32, and of men, Matthew 26:35; Acts 21:13 etc.; 1 Peter 3:18 L T Tr WH text; ἐν φόνῳ μαχαίρας, Hebrews 11:37; of the punishment of death, Hebrews 10:28; often of the violent death which Christ suffered, as John 12:33; Romans 5:6, etc.
3. Phrases: ἀποθνήσκ. ἔκ τινος, to perish by means of something, [cf. English to die of], Revelation 8:11; ἐν τῇ ἁμαρτίᾳ, ἐν ταῖς ἁμαρτίαις, fixed in sin, hence, to die unreformed, John 8:21, 24; ἐν τῷ Ἀδάμ by connection with Adam, 1 Corinthians 15:22; ἐν κυρίῳ in fellowship with, and trusting in, the Lord, Revelation 14:13; ἀποθνήσκ. τι, to die a certain death, Romans 6:10 (θάνατον μακρόν, Chariton, p. 12, D'Orville edition [l. i. c. 8, p. 17, 6, Beck edition; cf. Winers Grammar, 227 (213); Buttmann, 149 (130)]); τῇ ἁμαρτίᾳ, used of Christ, 'that he might not have to busy himself more with the sin of men,' Romans 6:10; ἑαυτῷ to become one's own master, independent, by dying, Romans 14:7 [cf. Meyer]; τῷ κυρίῳ to become subject to the Lord's will by dying, Romans 14:8 [cf. Meyer]; διά τινα i. e. to save one, 1 Corinthians 8:11; on the phrases ἀποθνήσκ. περί and ὑπέρ τινος, see περί, I. c. δ. and ὑπέρ I. 2 and 3. Oratorically, although the proper signification of the verb is retained, καθ’ ἡμέραν ἀποθνήσκω I meet death daily, live daily in danger of death, 1 Corinthians 15:31, cf. 2 Corinthians 6:9.
4. of trees which dry up, Jude 1:12; of seeds, which while being resolved into their elements in the ground seem to perish by rotting, John 12:24; 1 Corinthians 15:36.
II. tropically, in various senses;
1. of eternal death, as it is called, i. e. to be subject to eternal misery, and that, too, already beginning on earth: Romans 8:13; John 6:50; John 11:26.
2. of moral death, in various senses;
a. to be deprived of real life, i. e. especially of the power of doing right, of confidence in God and the hope of future blessedness, Romans 7:10; of the spiritual torpor of those who have fallen from the fellowship of Christ, the fountain of true life, Revelation 3:2.
b. with the dative of the thing [cf. Winers Grammar, 210 (197); 428 (398); Buttmann, 178 (155)], to become wholly alienated from a thing, and freed from all connection with it: τῷ νόμῳ, Galatians 2:19, which must also be supplied with ἀποθανόντες (for so we must read for Rec.elz ἀποθανόντος) in Romans 7:6 [cf. Winer's Grammar, 159 (150)]; τῇ ἁμαρτίᾳ, Romans 6:2 (in another sense in Romans 6:10; see I. 3 above); ἀπὸ τῶν στοιχείων τοῦ κόσμου so that your relation to etc. has passed away, Colossians 2:20 (ἀπὸ τῶν παθῶν, Porphyry, de abst. animal. 1, 41 [cf. Buttmann, 322 (277); Winer's Grammar, 370 (347)]); true Christians are said simply ἀποθανεῖν, as having put off all sensibility to worldly things that draw them away from God, Colossians 3:3; since they owe this habit of mind to the death of Christ, they are said also ἀποθανεῖν σὺν Χριστῷ, Romans 6:8; Colossians 2:20. Unchecked Copy BoxJhn 4:49 - The royal G937 official G937 *said G3004 to Him, “[fn]Sir, G2962 come G2597 down G2597 before G4250 my child G3813 dies.” G599
Unchecked Copy BoxJhn 6:49 - “Your fathers G3962 ate G2068 the manna G3131 in the wilderness, G2048 and they died. G599
Unchecked Copy BoxJhn 6:50 - “This G3778 is the bread G740 which comes G2597 down G2597 out of heaven, G3772 so G2443 that one G5100 may eat G2068 of it and not die. G599
Unchecked Copy BoxJhn 6:58 - “This G3778 is the bread G740 which G3588 came G2597 down G2597 out of heaven; G3772 not as the fathers G3962 ate G2068 and died; G599 he who eats G5176 this G3778 bread G740 will live G2198 forever.” G165
Unchecked Copy BoxJhn 8:21 - Then G3767 He said G3004 again G3825 to them, “I go G5217 away, G5217 and you will seek G2212 Me, and will die G599 in your sin; G266 where G3699 I am going, G5217 you cannot G1410 G3756 come.” G2064
Unchecked Copy BoxJhn 8:24 - “Therefore G3767 I said G3004 to you that you will die G599 in your sins; G266 for unless G1437 G3361 you believe G4100 that [fn]I am G1510 He, you will die G599 in your sins.” G266
Unchecked Copy BoxJhn 8:52 - The Jews G2453 said G3004 to Him, “Now G3568 we know G1097 that You have G2192 a demon. G1140 Abraham G11 died, G599 and the prophets G4396 also; and You say, G3004 ‘If G1437 anyone G5100 keeps G5083 My word, G3056 he will never G3756 G3361 taste G1089 of death.’ G2288
Unchecked Copy BoxJhn 8:53 - “Surely G3361 You are not greater G3173 than our father G3962 Abraham, G11 who G3748 died? G599 The prophets G4396 died G599 too; G2532 whom G5101 do You make G4160 Yourself G4572 out to be?
Unchecked Copy BoxJhn 11:14 - So G3767 Jesus G2424 then G3767 said G3004 to them plainly, G3954 “Lazarus G2976 is dead, G599
Unchecked Copy BoxJhn 11:16 - Therefore G3767 Thomas, G2381 who is called G3004 [fn]Didymus, G1324 said G3004 to his fellow G4827 disciples, G4827 “Let us also G2532 go, G71 so G3767 that we may die G599 with Him.”
Unchecked Copy BoxJhn 11:21 - Martha G3136 then G3767 said G3004 to Jesus, G2424 “Lord, G2962 if G1487 You had been G1510 here, G5602 my brother G80 would not have died. G599
Unchecked Copy BoxJhn 11:25 - Jesus G2424 said G3004 to her, “I am G1510 the resurrection G386 and the life; G2222 he who believes G4100 in Me will live G2198 even G2579 if G2579 he dies, G599
Unchecked Copy BoxJhn 11:26 - and everyone G3956 who lives G2198 and believes G4100 in Me will never G3756 G3361 die. G599 Do you believe G4100 this?” G3778
Unchecked Copy BoxJhn 11:32 - Therefore, G3767 when G5613 Mary G3137 came G2064 where G3699 Jesus G2424 was, she saw G3708 Him, and fell G4098 at His feet, G4228 saying G3004 to Him, “Lord, G2962 if G1487 You had been G1510 here, G5602 my brother G80 would not have died.” G599
Unchecked Copy BoxJhn 11:37 - But some G5100 of them said, G3004 “Could G1410 not this G3778 man, G3778 who opened G455 the eyes G3788 of the blind G5185 man, G3778 [fn]have G4160 kept G4160 this G3778 man G3778 also G2532 from dying?” G599
Unchecked Copy BoxJhn 11:50 - nor G3761 do you take G3049 into account G3049 that it is expedient G4851 for you that one G1520 man G444 die G599 for the people, G2992 and that the whole G3650 nation G1484 not perish.” G622
Unchecked Copy BoxJhn 11:51 - Now G1161 he did not say G3004 this G3778 [fn]on his own G1438 initiative, G1438 but being G1510 high G749 priest G749 that year, G1763 he prophesied G4395 that Jesus G2424 was going G3195 to die G599 for the nation, G1484
Unchecked Copy BoxJhn 12:24 - “Truly, G281 truly, G281 I say G3004 to you, unless G1437 G3361 a grain G2848 of wheat G4621 falls G4098 into the earth G1093 and dies, G599 it remains G3306 alone; G3441 but if G1437 it dies, G599 it bears G5342 much G4183 fruit. G2590
Unchecked Copy BoxJhn 12:33 - But He was saying G3004 this G3778 to indicate G4591 the kind G4169 of death G2288 by which G4169 He was to die. G599
Unchecked Copy BoxJhn 18:14 - Now G1161 Caiaphas G2533 was the one who had advised G4823 the Jews G2453 that it was expedient G4851 for one G1520 man G444 to die G599 on behalf G5228 of the people. G2992
Unchecked Copy BoxJhn 18:32 - to fulfill G4137 the word G3056 of Jesus G2424 which G3739 He spoke, G3004 signifying G4591 by what G4169 kind G4169 of death G2288 He was about G3195 to die. G599
Unchecked Copy BoxJhn 19:7 - The Jews G2453 answered G611 him, “We have G2192 a law, G3551 and by that law G3551 He ought G3784 to die G599 because G3754 He made G4160 Himself G1438 out to be the Son G5207 of God.” G2316
Unchecked Copy BoxJhn 21:23 - Therefore G3767 this G3778 saying G3056 went G1831 out among G1519 the brethren G80 that that disciple G3101 would not die; G599 yet G1161 Jesus G2424 did not say G3004 to him that he would not die, G599 but only, “If G1437 I want G2309 him to remain G3306 until G2193 I come, G2064 what G5101 is that to you?”
Unchecked Copy BoxAct 7:4 - “Then G5119 he left G1831 the land G1093 of the Chaldeans G5466 and settled G2730 in [fn]Haran. G5488 From there, G2547 after G3326 his father G3962 died, G599 God had him move G3351 to this G3778 country G1093 in which G3739 you are now G3568 living. G2730
Unchecked Copy BoxAct 9:37 - And it happened G1096 [fn]at that time G2250 that she fell G770 sick G770 and died; G599 and when they had washed G3068 her body, they laid G5087 it in an upper G5253 room. G5253
Unchecked Copy BoxAct 21:13 - Then G5119 Paul G3972 answered, G611 “What G5101 are you doing, G4160 weeping G2799 and breaking G4919 my heart? G2588 For I am G2192 ready G2093 not only G3440 to be bound, G1210 but even G2532 to die G599 at Jerusalem G2419 for the name G3686 of the Lord G2962 Jesus.” G2424
Unchecked Copy BoxAct 25:11 - “If, G1487 then, G3767 I am G91 a wrongdoer G91 and have committed G4238 anything G5100 worthy G514 of death, G2288 I do not refuse G3868 to die; G599 but if G1487 none G3762 of those things is true of which G3739 these G3778 men G3778 accuse G2723 me, no G3762 one G3762 can G1410 hand G5483 me over to them. I appeal G1941 to Caesar.” G2541
