“The ax is already at the root of the trees. Therefore, every tree that doesn’t produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.

and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down. For it is written:

He will give his angels orders concerning you,

and they will support you with their hands

so that you will not strike

your foot against a stone.”

As he was walking along the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter), and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the sea ​— ​for they were fishermen.

“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt should lose its taste, how can it be made salty?[fn] It’s no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet.

“Reach a settlement quickly with your adversary while you’re on the way with him to the court, or your adversary will hand you over to the judge, and the judge to[fn] the officer, and you will be thrown into prison.

“If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of the parts of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.

“If that’s how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and thrown into the furnace tomorrow, won’t he do much more for you ​— ​you of little faith?

“Don’t give what is holy to dogs or toss your pearls before pigs, or they will trample them under their feet, turn, and tear you to pieces.

“Lord, my servant is lying at home paralyzed, in terrible agony.”

Jesus went into Peter’s house and saw his mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever.

Just then some men[fn] brought to him a paralytic lying on a stretcher. Seeing their faith, Jesus told the paralytic, “Have courage, son, your sins are forgiven.”

“And no one puts[fn] new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the skins burst, the wine spills out, and the skins are ruined. No, they put new wine into fresh wineskins, and both are preserved.”

“Don’t assume that I came to bring peace on the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword.

“They will throw them into the blazing furnace where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

“Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a large net thrown into the sea. It collected every kind of fish,

“and throw them into the blazing furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

He answered, “It isn’t right to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.”

“But, so we won’t offend them, go to the sea, cast in a fishhook, and take the first fish that you catch. When you open its mouth you’ll find a coin.[fn] Take it and give it to them for me and you.”

“If your hand or your foot causes you to fall away, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life maimed or lame than to have two hands or two feet and be thrown into the eternal fire.

“But he wasn’t willing. Instead, he went and threw him into prison until he could pay what was owed.

Jesus answered them, “Truly I tell you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what was done to the fig tree, but even if you tell this mountain, ‘Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ it will be done.

“then[fn] you should have deposited my money with the bankers, and I would have received my money[fn] back with interest when I returned.

“By pouring this perfume on my body, she has prepared me for burial.

The chief priests took the silver and said, “It’s not permitted to put it into the temple treasury, since it is blood money.”

After crucifying him, they divided his clothes by casting lots.[fn]

As he passed alongside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew, Simon’s brother, casting a net into the sea ​— ​for they were fishermen.

“And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the wine will burst the skins, and the wine is lost as well as the skins. No, new wine is put into fresh wineskins.”

“The kingdom of God is like this,” he said. “A man scatters seed on the ground.

He said to her, “Let the children be fed first, because it isn’t right to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.”

When she went back to her home, she found her child lying on the bed, and the demon was gone.

So he took him away from the crowd in private. After putting his fingers in the man’s ears and spitting, he touched his tongue.

“And many times it has thrown him into fire or water to destroy him. But if you can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.”

“But whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to fall away ​— ​it would be better for him if a heavy millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea.

“And if your foot causes you to fall away, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life lame than to have two feet and be thrown into hell.[fn]

“And if your eye causes you to fall away, gouge it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell,

“Truly I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will happen, it will be done for him.

Sitting across from the temple treasury, he watched how the crowd dropped money into the treasury. Many rich people were putting in large sums.

Then they crucified him and divided his clothes, casting lots for them to decide what each would get.

So he took him to Jerusalem, had him stand on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here.

“And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the new wine will burst the skins, it will spill, and the skins will be ruined.

“If that’s how God clothes the grass, which is in the field today and is thrown into the furnace tomorrow, how much more will he do for you ​— ​you of little faith?

“I came to bring fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already set ablaze!
