Prophecy and Tongues

1 Pursue ^G1377 love ^G26, yet ^G1161 earnestly ^G2206 desire ^G2206 spiritual ^G4152 gifts, but especially ^G3123 that you may prophesy ^G4395.

2 For one who speaks ^G2980 in a tongue ^G1100 does not speak ^G2980 to men ^G444 but to God ^G2316, for no ^G3762 one ^G3762 [fn]understands ^G191, but [fn]in his spirit ^G4151 he speaks ^G2980 mysteries ^G3466. 3 But one who prophesies ^G4395 speaks ^G2980 to men ^G444 for edification ^G3619 and exhortation ^G3874 and encouragement ^G3889. 4 One who speaks ^G2980 in a tongue ^G1100 edifies ^G3618 himself ^G1438; but one who prophesies ^G4395 edifies ^G3618 the church ^G1577. 5 But ^G1161 I wish ^G2309 that you all ^G3956 spoke ^G2980 in tongues ^G1100, but even more ^G3123 that you would prophesy ^G4395. And greater ^G3173 is one who prophesies ^G4395 than ^G2228 one who speaks ^G2980 in tongues ^G1100, unless ^G1487 G3361 he [fn]translates ^G1329, so ^G2443 that the church ^G1577 may receive ^G2983 edification ^G3619.

6 But now ^G3568, brothers ^G80, if ^G1437 I come ^G2064 to you speaking ^G2980 in ^G1437 tongues ^G1100, what ^G5101 will I profit ^G5623 you unless ^G1437 G3361 I speak ^G2980 to you either ^G2228 by way ^G1722 of revelation ^G602 or ^G2228 of knowledge ^G1108 or ^G2228 of prophecy ^G4394 or ^G2228 of teaching ^G1322? 7 Yet ^G3676 even lifeless ^G895 things ^G895, either ^G1535 flute ^G836 or ^G1535 harp ^G2788, in producing ^G1325 a sound ^G5456, if ^G1437 they do not produce ^G1325 a distinction ^G1293 in the tones ^G5353, how ^G4459 will it be known ^G1097 what is played ^G832 on ^G832 the ^G832 flute ^G832 or ^G2228 on the harp ^G2789? 8 For if ^G1437 the trumpet ^G4536 produces ^G1325 an indistinct ^G82 sound ^G5456, who ^G5101 will prepare ^G3903 himself for battle ^G4171? 9 So ^G3779 also ^G2532 you, unless ^G1437 G3361 you utter ^G1325 by the tongue ^G1100 a word ^G3056 that is clear ^G2154, how ^G4459 will it be known ^G1097 what is spoken ^G2980? For you will be speaking ^G2980 into the air ^G109. 10 There are, perhaps ^G5177, a great ^G5118 many ^G5118 kinds ^G1085 of sounds ^G5456 in the world ^G2889, and none ^G3762 is without ^G880 meaning ^G880. 11 If ^G1437 then ^G3767 I do not know ^G6063 the meaning ^G1411 of the sound ^G5456, I will be to the one who speaks ^G2980 a [fn]barbarian ^G915, and the one who speaks ^G2980 will be a [fn]barbarian ^G915 [fn]to me. 12 So ^G3779 also ^G2532 you, since ^G1893 you are zealous ^G2207 for [fn]spiritual ^G4151 gifts, seek ^G2212 to abound ^G4052 for the edification ^G3619 of the church ^G1577.

13 Therefore ^G1352 let one who speaks ^G2980 in a tongue ^G1100 pray ^G4336 that he may [fn]translate ^G1329. 14 For if ^G1437 I pray ^G4336 in ^G1437 a tongue ^G1100, my spirit ^G4151 prays ^G4336, but my mind ^G3563 is unfruitful ^G175. 15 What ^G5101 is the outcome then ^G3767? I will pray ^G4336 with the spirit ^G4151 and I will pray ^G4336 with the mind ^G3563 also ^G2532; I will sing ^G5567 with the spirit ^G4151 and I will sing ^G5567 with the mind ^G3563 also ^G2532. 16 Otherwise ^G1893 if ^G1437 you bless ^G2127 [fn]in ^G1437 the spirit ^G4151 only, how ^G4459 will the one who fills ^G378 the place ^G5117 of the [fn]uninformed ^G2399 say ^G3004 the “Amen ^G281” at your giving ^G2169 of ^G2169 thanks ^G2169, since ^G1894 he does not know ^G6063 what ^G5101 you are saying ^G3004? 17 For you are giving ^G2168 thanks ^G2168 well ^G2573 enough ^G2573, but the other ^G2087 person ^G2087 is not edified ^G3618. 18 I thank ^G2168 God ^G2316 that I speak ^G2980 in tongues ^G1100 more ^G3123 than you all ^G3956; 19 however ^G235, in the church ^G1577 I desire ^G2309 to speak ^G2980 five ^G4002 words ^G3056 with my mind ^G3563 so ^G2443 that I may instruct ^G2727 others ^G243 also ^G2532, rather ^G2228 than ^G2228 ten ^G3463 thousand ^G3463 words ^G3056 in a tongue ^G1100.

20 Brothers ^G80, do not be children ^G3813 in your thinking ^G5424; rather ^G235 in evil ^G2549 be infants ^G3515, but in your thinking ^G5424 be mature ^G5046. 21 In the Law ^G3551 it is written ^G1125, “BY MEN ^G2084 OF ^G2084 STRANGE ^G2084 TONGUES ^G2084 AND BY THE LIPS ^G5491 OF STRANGERS ^G2087 I WILL SPEAK ^G2980 TO THIS ^G3778 PEOPLE ^G2992, AND EVEN ^G3761 SO ^G3779 THEY WILL NOT LISTEN ^G1522 TO ME,” says ^G3004 the [fn]Lord ^G2962. 22 So ^G5620 then ^G5620 tongues ^G1100 are for a sign ^G4592, not to those ^G3588 who believe ^G4100 but to unbelievers ^G571; but prophecy ^G4394 is for a sign not to unbelievers ^G571 but to those ^G3588 who believe ^G4100. 23 Therefore ^G3767 if ^G1437 the whole ^G3650 church ^G1577 assembles ^G4905 together ^{G1909 G3588 G846} and all ^G3956 speak ^G2980 in tongues ^G1100, and [fn]uninformed ^G2399 men ^G2399 or ^G2228 unbelievers ^G571 enter ^G1525, will they not say ^G3004 that you are ^G3105 out ^G3105 of ^G3105 your mind ^G3105? 24 But if ^G1437 all ^G3956 prophesy ^G4395, and an unbeliever ^G571 or ^G2228 an [fn]uninformed ^G2399 man ^G2399 enters ^G1525, he is convicted ^G1651 by all ^G3956, he is called ^G350 to ^G350 account ^G350 by all ^G3956; 25 the secrets ^G2927 of his heart ^G2588 are disclosed ^G5318; and so ^G3779 he will fall ^G4098 on his face ^G4383 and worship ^G4352 God ^G2316, declaring ^G518 that SURELY ^G3689 GOD ^G2316 IS AMONG ^G1722 YOU.

Orderly Worship

26 What ^G5101 is the outcome then ^G3767, brothers ^G80? When ^G3752 you assemble ^G4905, each ^G1538 one ^G1538 has ^G2192 a psalm ^G5568, has ^G2192 a teaching ^G1322, has ^G2192 a revelation ^G602, has ^G2192 a tongue ^G1100, has ^G2192 a [fn]translation ^G2058. Let all ^G3956 things ^G3956 be done ^G1096 for edification ^G3619.

27 If ^G1535 anyone ^G5100 speaks ^G2980 in a tongue ^G1100, it should be by two ^G1417 or ^G2228 at the most ^G4183 three ^G5140, and each in turn ^G3313, and one ^G1520 must [fn]translate ^G1329; 28 but if ^G1437 there is no ^G3361 [fn]translator ^G1328, he must keep ^G4601 silent ^G4601 in the church ^G1577, and let him speak ^G2980 to himself ^G1438 and to God ^G2316. 29 And let two ^G1417 or ^G2228 three ^G5140 prophets ^G4396 speak ^G2980, and let the others ^G243 pass ^G1252 judgment ^G1252. 30 But if ^G1437 a revelation ^G601 is ^G601 made ^G601 to another ^G243 who is seated ^G2521, the first ^G4413 one must keep ^G4601 silent ^G4601. 31 For you can ^G1410 all ^G3956 prophesy ^G4395 one ^G2596 G1520 by one ^G2596 G1520, so ^G2443 that all ^G3956 may learn ^G3129 and all ^G3956 may be exhorted ^G3870. 32 And the spirits ^G4151 of prophets ^G4396 are subject ^G5293 to prophets ^G4396; 33 for God ^G2316 is not a God of confusion ^G181 but of [fn]peace ^G1515, as in all ^G3956 the churches ^G1577 of the saints ^G40.

34 The women ^G1135 are to keep ^G4601 silent ^G4601 in the churches ^G1577, for they are not permitted ^G2010 to speak ^G2980, but are to subject ^G5293 themselves, just ^G2531 as the Law ^G3551 also ^G2532 says ^G3004. 35 But if ^G1487 they desire ^G2309 to learn ^G3129 anything ^G5100, let them ask ^G1905 their own ^G2398 husbands ^G435 at home ^G3624, for it is disgraceful ^G150 for a woman ^G1135 to speak ^G2980 in church ^G1577. 36 [fn]Was it from you that the word ^G3056 of God ^G2316 first went ^G1831 forth ^G1831? Or ^G2228 has it arrived ^G2658 to you only ^G3441?

37 If ^G1487 anyone ^G5100 thinks ^G1380 he is a prophet ^G4396 or ^G2228 spiritual ^G4152, let him recognize ^G1921 that the things which ^G3739 I write ^G1125 to you are the Lord’s ^G2962 commandment ^G1785. 38 But if ^G1487 anyone ^G5100 remains ^G50 ignorant ^G50 about this, he [fn]is ignored ^G50 by God.

39 Therefore ^G5620, my brothers ^G80, earnestly ^G2206 desire ^G2206 to prophesy ^G4395, and do not forbid ^G2967 to speak ^G2980 in tongues ^G1100. 40 But all ^G3956 things ^G3956 must be done ^G1096 properly ^G2156 and in an orderly ^G5010 manner ^G5010.
