2 from the nations ^H1471 concerning which ^H834 Yahweh ^H3068 had said ^H559 to the sons ^H1121 of Israel ^H3478, “You shall not [fn]go ^H935 along ^H935 with them, nor ^H3808 shall they [fn]go ^H935 along ^H935 with you, for they will surely ^H403 turn ^H5186 your heart ^H3824 away ^H5186 after ^H310 their gods ^H430.” Solomon ^H8010 clung ^H1692 to these ^H1992 in love ^H157. 3 And he had ^H1961 700 ^H7651 H3967 wives ^H802—princesses ^H8282—and 300 ^H7969 H3967 concubines ^H6370, and his wives ^H802 turned ^H5186 his heart ^H3820 away ^H5186. 4 Now it happened at the time ^H6256 that Solomon ^H8010 was old ^H2209, his wives ^H802 turned ^H5186 his heart ^H3824 away ^H5186 after ^H310 other ^H312 gods ^H430; and his heart ^H3824 was not [fn]wholly ^H8003 devoted ^H8003 to Yahweh ^H3068 his God ^H430, as the heart ^H3824 of David ^H1732 his father ^H1 had been. 5 For Solomon ^H8010 went ^H1980 after ^H310 Ashtoreth ^H6252 the goddess ^H430 of the Sidonians ^H6722 and after ^H310 [fn]Milcom ^H4445 the detestable ^H8251 idol ^H8251 of the Ammonites ^H5984. 6 And Solomon ^H8010 did ^H6213 what ^H7451 was ^H7451 evil ^H7451 in the sight ^H5869 of Yahweh ^H3068, and did not follow ^H310 Yahweh ^H3068 fully ^H4390, as David ^H1732 his father ^H1 had done. 7 Then ^H227 Solomon ^H8010 built ^H1129 a high ^H1116 place ^H1116 for Chemosh ^H3645 the detestable ^H8251 idol ^H8251 of Moab ^H4124, on the mountain ^H2022 which ^H834 is [fn]east ^H5921 H6440 of Jerusalem ^H3389, and for Molech ^H4432 the detestable ^H8251 idol ^H8251 of the sons ^H1121 of Ammon ^H5983. 8 Thus ^H3651 also he did ^H6213 for all ^H3605 his foreign ^H5237 wives ^H802, who burned ^H6999 incense ^H6999 and sacrificed ^H2076 to their gods ^H430.

9 Now Yahweh ^H3068 was angry ^H599 with Solomon ^H8010 because ^H3588 his heart ^H3824 was turned ^H5186 away ^H5186 from Yahweh ^H3068, the God ^H430 of Israel ^H3478, who had appeared ^H7200 to him twice ^H6471, 10 and had commanded ^H6680 him concerning ^H5921 this ^H2088 thing ^H1697, that he should not walk ^H1980 after ^H310 other ^H312 gods ^H430; but he did not keep ^H8104 what ^H834 Yahweh ^H3068 had commanded ^H6680. 11 So Yahweh ^H3068 said ^H559 to Solomon ^H8010, “Because ^H3282 H834 this ^H2088 has happened ^H1961 with ^H5973 you: you have not kept ^H8104 My covenant ^H1285 and My statutes ^H2708, which ^H834 I have commanded ^H6680 you, so I will surely ^H7167 tear ^H7167 the kingdom ^H4467 from you, and will give ^H5414 it to your servant ^H5650. 12 Nevertheless ^H389 I will not do ^H6213 it in your days ^H3117 for the sake ^H4616 of your father ^H1 David ^H1732, but I will tear ^H7167 it out ^H7167 of the hand ^H3027 of your son ^H1121. 13 However ^H7534, I will not tear ^H7167 away ^H7167 all ^H3605 the kingdom ^H4467, but I will give ^H5414 one ^H259 tribe ^H7626 to your son ^H1121 for the sake ^H4616 of My servant ^H5650 David ^H1732 and for the sake ^H4616 of Jerusalem ^H3389 which ^H834 I have chosen ^H977.”

Yahweh Raises Up Adversaries

14 Then Yahweh ^H3068 raised ^H6965 up ^H6965 an adversary ^H7854 to Solomon ^H8010, Hadad ^H1908 the Edomite ^H130; he was of the seed ^H2233 of the king ^H4428 in Edom ^H123.

15 Now it happened ^H1961 that when David ^H1732 was in Edom ^H123, and Joab ^H3097 the commander ^H8269 of the army ^H6635 had gone ^H5927 up ^H5927 to bury ^H6912 the slain ^H2491, and had struck ^H5221 down ^H5221 every ^H3605 male ^H2145 in Edom ^H123

26 Now Jeroboam ^H3379 the son ^H1121 of Nebat ^H5028, an Ephraimite ^H673 of Zeredah ^H6868, Solomon’s ^H8010 servant ^H5650, whose mother’s ^H517 name ^H8034 was Zeruah ^H6871, a widow ^H490, also [fn]raised ^H7311 his hand ^H3027 against the king ^H4428. 27 Now this ^H2088 was the reason ^H1697 why ^H834 he [fn]raised ^H7311 his hand ^H3027 against the king ^H4428: Solomon ^H8010 built ^H1129 the [fn]Millo ^H4407, and closed ^H5462 up ^H5462 the breach ^H6556 of the city ^H5892 of his father ^H1 David ^H1732. 28 Now the man ^H376 Jeroboam ^H3379 was a mighty ^H1368 man ^H1368 of valor ^H2428. Now [fn]he had covered ^H3680 himself with a new ^H2319 cloak ^H8008; and both ^H8147 of them were alone ^H905 in the field ^H7704. 30 Then Ahijah ^H281 took ^H8610 hold ^H8610 of the new ^H2319 cloak ^H8008 which ^H834 was on him and tore ^H7167 it into twelve ^H8147 H6240 pieces ^H7168. 31 And he said ^H559 to Jeroboam ^H3379, “Take ^H3947 for yourself ten ^H6235 pieces ^H7168; for thus ^H3541 says ^H559 Yahweh ^H3068, the God ^H430 of Israel ^H3478, ‘Behold ^H2009, I will tear ^H7167 the kingdom ^H4467 out ^H7167 of the hand ^H3027 of Solomon ^H8010 and give ^H5414 you ten ^H6235 tribes ^H7626, 32 but he will have ^H1961 one ^H259 tribe ^H7626, for the sake ^H4616 of My servant ^H5650 David ^H1732 and for the sake ^H4616 of Jerusalem ^H3389, the city ^H5892 which ^H834 I have chosen ^H977 from all ^H3605 the tribes ^H7626 of Israel ^H3478, 33 because ^H3282 H834 they have forsaken ^H5800 Me, and have worshiped ^H2331 Ashtoreth ^H6252 the goddess ^H430 of the Sidonians ^H6722, Chemosh ^H3645 the god ^H430 of Moab ^H4124, and Milcom ^H4445 the god ^H430 of the sons ^H1121 of Ammon ^H5983; and they have not walked ^H1980 in My ways ^H1870 to do ^H6213 what ^H3477 is ^H3477 right ^H3477 in My sight ^H5869 and to keep My statutes ^H2708 and My judgments ^H4941, as his father ^H1 David ^H1732 did. 34 Nevertheless I will not take ^H3947 the whole ^H3605 kingdom ^H4467 out of his hand ^H3027, but I will make ^H7896 him [fn]ruler ^H5387 all ^H3605 the days ^H3117 of his life ^H2416, for the sake ^H4616 of My servant ^H5650 David ^H1732 whom ^H834 I chose ^H977, who ^H834 kept ^H8104 My commandments ^H4687 and My statutes ^H2708; 35 but I will take ^H3947 the kingdom ^H4410 from his son’s ^H1121 hand ^H3027 and give ^H5414 it to you—the ten ^H6235 tribes ^H7626. 36 But to his son ^H1121 I will give ^H5414 one ^H259 tribe ^H7626, that My servant ^H5650 David ^H1732 may have ^H1961 a lamp ^H5215 always ^H3605 H3117 before ^H6440 Me in Jerusalem ^H3389, the city ^H5892 where ^H834 H8033 I have chosen ^H977 for Myself to put ^H7760 My name ^H8034. 37 And I will take ^H3947 you, and you shall reign ^H4427 over whatever ^H3605 H834 your soul ^H5315 desires ^H183, and you shall be king ^H4428 over ^H5921 Israel ^H3478. 38 Then it will be, that if ^H518 you listen ^H8085 to all ^H3605 that I command ^H6680 you and walk ^H1980 in My ways ^H1870, and do ^H6213 what ^H3477 is ^H3477 right ^H3477 in My sight ^H5869 to keep ^H8104 My statutes ^H2708 and My commandments ^H4687, as My servant ^H5650 David ^H1732 did ^H6213, then I will be with you and build ^H1129 you an enduring ^H539 house ^H1004 as I built ^H1129 for David ^H1732, and I will give ^H5414 Israel ^H3478 to you. 39 Thus I will afflict ^H6031 the seed ^H2233 of David ^H1732 for this ^H2088, but not always ^H3605 H3117.’” 40 Solomon ^H8010 sought ^H1245 therefore to put ^H4191 Jeroboam ^H3379 to ^H4191 death ^H4191; but Jeroboam ^H3379 arose ^H6965 and fled ^H1272 to Egypt ^H4714 to Shishak ^H7895 king ^H4428 of Egypt ^H4714, and he was in Egypt ^H4714 until ^H5704 the death ^H4194 of Solomon ^H8010.

The Death of Solomon

41 Now the rest ^H3499 of the acts ^H1697 of Solomon ^H8010 and whatever ^H3605 H834 he did ^H6213, and his wisdom ^H2451, are they not written ^H3789 in the book ^H5612 of the acts ^H1697 of Solomon ^H8010?

42 Thus the time ^H3117 that Solomon ^H8010 reigned ^H4427 in Jerusalem ^H3389 over ^H5921 all ^H3605 Israel ^H3478 was forty ^H705 years ^H8141. 43 And Solomon ^H8010 slept ^H7901 with his fathers ^H1 and was buried ^H6912 in the city ^H5892 of his father ^H1 David ^H1732, and his son ^H1121 Rehoboam ^H7346 became ^H4427 king ^H4427 in ^H8478 his place ^H8478.
