Elijah Runs from Jezebel

1 Now Ahab ^H256 told ^H5046 Jezebel ^H348 all ^H3605 that Elijah ^H452 had done ^H6213, and [fn]how ^H834 he had killed ^H2026 all ^H3605 the prophets ^H5030 with the sword ^H2719.

2 Then Jezebel ^H348 sent ^H7971 a messenger ^H4397 to Elijah ^H452, saying ^H559, “So ^H3541 may the gods ^H430 do ^H6213 to me and even ^H3541 more ^H3254, if ^H3588 I do not make ^H7760 your [fn]life ^H5315 as the [fn]life ^H5315 of one ^H259 of them by about this time ^H6256 tomorrow ^H4279.” 3 And he [fn]was ^H3372 afraid ^H3372 and arose ^H6965 and [fn]ran ^H1980 for his [fn]life ^H5315 and came ^H935 to Beersheba ^H884, which ^H834 belongs to Judah ^H3063, and left ^H5117 his young ^H5288 man ^H5288 there ^H8033. 4 But he himself ^H1931 went ^H1980 a day’s ^H3117 journey ^H1870 into the wilderness ^H4057, and came ^H935 and sat ^H3427 down ^H3427 under ^H8478 a broom ^H7574 tree ^H7574; and he asked ^H7592 for himself ^H5315 that he might die ^H4191, and said ^H559, “It is enough ^H7227; now ^H6258, O Yahweh ^H3068, take ^H3947 my [fn]life ^H5315, for I am not better ^H2896 than ^H4480 my fathers ^H1.” 5 Then he lay ^H7901 down ^H7901 and slept ^H3462 under ^H8478 a broom ^H7574 tree ^H7574; and behold ^H2009, there ^H2088 was an angel ^H4397 touching ^H5060 him, and he said ^H559 to him, “Arise ^H6965, eat ^H398.” 6 Then he looked ^H5027 and behold ^H2009, there was at ^H4763 his head ^H4763 a bread ^H5692 cake ^H5692 baked on hot ^H7531 stones ^H7531, and a jar ^H6835 of water ^H4325. So he ate ^H398 and drank ^H8354 and lay ^H7901 down ^H7901 again ^H7725. 7 And the angel ^H4397 of Yahweh ^H3068 came ^H7725 again ^H7725 a second ^H8145 time ^H8145 and touched ^H5060 him and said ^H559, “Arise ^H6965, eat ^H398, because ^H3588 the journey ^H1870 is too ^H4480 great ^H7227 for you.” 8 So he arose ^H6965 and ate ^H398 and drank ^H8354, and went ^H1980 in the strength ^H3581 of that food ^H396 forty ^H705 days ^H3117 and forty ^H705 nights ^H3915 to Horeb ^H2722, the mountain ^H2022 of God ^H430.

Elijah at Horeb

9 Then he came ^H935 there ^H8033 to a cave ^H4631 and lodged ^H3885 there ^H8033; and behold ^H2009, the word ^H1697 of Yahweh ^H3068 came to him, and He said ^H559 to him, “What ^H4100 are you doing here ^H6311, Elijah ^H452?”

10 And he said ^H559, “I have been ^H7065 very ^H7065 zealous ^H7065 for Yahweh ^H3068, the God ^H430 of hosts ^H6635; for the sons ^H1121 of Israel ^H3478 have forsaken ^H5800 Your covenant ^H1285, pulled ^H2040 down ^H2040 Your altars ^H4196 and killed ^H2026 Your prophets ^H5030 with the sword ^H2719. And I alone ^H905 am left ^H3498; and they seek ^H1245 my life ^H5315, to take ^H3947 it away.”

11 So He said ^H559, “Go ^H3318 forth ^H3318 and stand ^H5975 on the mountain ^H2022 before ^H6440 Yahweh ^H3068.” And behold ^H2009, Yahweh ^H3068 was passing ^H5674 by ^H5674! And a great ^H1419 and strong ^H2389 wind ^H7307 was tearing ^H6561 up the mountains ^H2022 and breaking ^H7665 in ^H7665 pieces ^H7665 the rocks ^H5553 before ^H6440 Yahweh ^H3068; but Yahweh ^H3068 was not in the wind ^H7307. 15 And Yahweh ^H3068 said ^H559 to him, “Go ^H1980, return ^H7725 on your way ^H1870 to the wilderness ^H4057 of Damascus ^H1834, and you will arrive ^H935 and anoint ^H4886 Hazael ^H2371 king ^H4428 over ^H5921 Aram ^H758; 16 and Jehu ^H3058 the son ^H1121 of Nimshi ^H5250 you shall anoint ^H4886 king ^H4428 over ^H5921 Israel ^H3478; and Elisha ^H477 the son ^H1121 of Shaphat ^H8202 of Abel-meholah ^H65 you shall anoint ^H4886 as prophet ^H5030 in ^H8478 your place ^H8478. 17 And it will be ^H1961 that the one who escapes ^H4422 from the sword ^H2719 of Hazael ^H2371, Jehu ^H3058 shall put ^H4191 to ^H4191 death ^H4191, and the one who escapes ^H4422 from the sword ^H2719 of Jehu ^H3058, Elisha ^H477 shall put ^H4191 to ^H4191 death ^H4191. 18 Yet I will leave ^H7604 7,000 ^H7651 H505 in Israel ^H3478, all ^H3605 the knees ^H1290 that have not bowed ^H3766 to Baal ^H1168 and every ^H3605 mouth ^H6310 that has not kissed ^H5401 him.”

Elijah Puts the Mantle on Elisha

19 So he went ^H1980 from there ^H8033 and found ^H4672 Elisha ^H477 the son ^H1121 of Shaphat ^H8202, while he was plowing ^H2790 with twelve ^H8147 H6240 pairs ^H6776 of oxen before ^H6440 him, and he with the twelfth ^H8147 H6240. And Elijah ^H452 passed ^H5674 over ^H5674 to him and threw ^H7993 his mantle ^H155 on him.

20 So he forsook ^H5800 the oxen ^H1241 and ran ^H7323 after ^H310 Elijah ^H452 and said ^H559, “Please ^H4994 let me kiss ^H5401 my father ^H1 and my mother ^H517, then I will follow ^H1980 H310 you.” And he said ^H559 to him, “Go ^H1980 back ^H7725 again ^H7725, for what ^H4100 have I done ^H6213 to you?” 21 So he returned ^H7725 from following ^H310 him, and took ^H3947 the pair ^H6776 of oxen ^H1241 and sacrificed ^H2076 them and boiled ^H1310 their flesh ^H1320 with the implements ^H3627 of the oxen ^H1241, and gave ^H5414 it to the people ^H5971 and they ate ^H398. Then he arose ^H6965 and followed ^H1980 H310 Elijah ^H452 and ministered ^H8334 to him.
