Keep Fervent in Your Love

1 Therefore ^G3767, since Christ ^G5547 has [fn]suffered ^G3958 in the flesh ^G4561, arm ^G3695 yourselves also ^G2532 with the same ^G846 purpose ^G1771—because ^G3754 he who has [fn]suffered ^G3958 in the flesh ^G4561 has ceased ^G3973 from sin ^G266—

2 so ^G1519 as to no ^G3371 longer ^G3371 live ^G980 the rest ^G1954 of the time ^G5550 in the flesh ^G4561 for the lusts ^G1939 of men ^G444, but for the will ^G2307 of God ^G2316. 3 For the time ^G5550 already past ^G3928 is sufficient ^G713 for you to have worked ^G2716 out ^G2716 the desire ^G1013 of the Gentiles ^G1484, [fn]having pursued ^G4198 a ^G4198 course ^G4198 of sensuality ^G766, lusts ^G1939, drunkenness ^G3632, carousing ^G2970, drinking ^G4224 parties ^G4224, and [fn]abominable ^G111 idolatries ^G1495. 4 In all this ^G3739, they are surprised ^G3579 that you do not run ^G4936 with ^G4936 them into the same ^G846 excesses ^G401 of dissipation ^G810, maligning ^G987 you, 5 but they will give ^G591 account ^G3056 to Him who is ready ^G2093 to judge ^G2919 the living ^G2198 and the dead ^G3498. 6 For to this ^G3778 the gospel ^G2097 has been [fn]proclaimed ^G2097 even ^G2532 to those who are now dead ^G3498, so that though ^G3303 they were judged ^G2919 in the flesh ^G4561 as men ^G444, they live ^G2198 in the spirit ^G4151 according ^G2596 to the will of God ^G2316.

Sharing the Suffering of Christ

12 Beloved ^G27, do not be surprised ^G3579 at the fiery ^G4451 trial ^G4451 among ^G1722 you, which comes ^G1096 upon you for your testing ^G3986, as ^G5613 though ^G5613 some strange ^G3581 thing ^G3581 were happening ^G4819 to you.

13 But to ^G2526 the ^G2526 degree ^G2526 you are sharing ^G2841 the sufferings ^G3804 of Christ ^G5547, keep on rejoicing ^G5463, so ^G2443 that also ^G2532 at the revelation ^G602 of His glory ^G1391 you may rejoice ^G5463 with exultation ^G21. 14 If ^G1487 you are insulted ^G3679 [fn]for the name ^G3686 of Christ ^G5547, you are blessed ^G3107, because ^G3754 the Spirit ^G4151 of glory ^G1391 and of God ^G2316 rests ^G373 on you. 15 Make ^G1063 sure ^G1063 that none ^G5100 G3361 of you suffers ^G3958 as a murderer ^G5406, or ^G2228 thief ^G2812, or ^G2228 evildoer ^G2555, or ^G2228 a [fn]troublesome ^G244 meddler ^G244; 16 but if ^G1487 anyone suffers as a Christian ^G5546, he is not to be put to shame ^G153, but is to glorify ^G1392 God ^G2316 in this ^G3778 name ^G3686. 17 For it is time ^G2540 for judgment ^G2917 to begin ^G757 [fn]with the house ^G3624 of God ^G2316; and if ^G1487 it begins with us first ^G4413, what ^G5101 will be the outcome ^G5056 for those ^G3588 who do ^G544 not ^G544 obey ^G544 the gospel ^G2098 of God ^G2316? 18 AND IF ^G1487 IT IS WITH DIFFICULTY ^G3433 THAT THE RIGHTEOUS ^G1342 IS SAVED ^G4982, [fn]WHAT ^G4226 WILL BECOME ^G5316 OF THE GODLESS ^G765 MAN ^G765 AND THE SINNER ^G268? 19 Therefore ^G5620, those ^G3588 also ^G2532 who suffer ^G3958 according ^G2596 to the will ^G2307 of God ^G2316 must entrust ^G3908 their souls ^G5590 to a faithful ^G4103 Creator ^G2939 in doing ^G16 good ^G16.
