Elkanah and His Wives

1 Now there ^H8033 was a certain ^H259 man ^H376 from Ramathaim-zophim ^H7436 from the hill ^H2022 country ^H2022 of Ephraim ^H669, and his name ^H8034 was Elkanah ^H511 the son ^H1121 of Jeroham ^H3395, the son ^H1121 of Elihu ^H453, the son ^H1121 of Tohu ^H8459, the son ^H1121 of Zuph ^H6689, an Ephraimite ^H673.

2 Now he had two ^H8147 wives ^H802: the name ^H8034 of one ^H259 was Hannah ^H2584 and the name ^H8034 of the other ^H8145 Peninnah ^H6444; and Peninnah ^H6444 had ^H1961 children ^H3206, but Hannah ^H2584 had ^H369 no ^H369 children ^H3206.

3 Now that ^H1931 man ^H376 would go ^H5927 up ^H5927 from his city ^H5892 yearly ^H3117 to worship ^H2331 and to sacrifice ^H2076 to [fn]Yahweh ^H3068 of hosts ^H6635 in Shiloh ^H7887. And the two ^H8147 sons ^H1121 of Eli ^H5941, Hophni ^H2652 and Phinehas ^H6372, were priests ^H3548 to Yahweh ^H3068 there ^H8033. 4 And the day ^H3117 came ^H1961 that Elkanah ^H511 sacrificed ^H2076, and he would give ^H5414 portions ^H4490 to Peninnah ^H6444 his wife ^H802 and to all ^H3605 her sons ^H1121 and her daughters ^H1323; 5 but to Hannah ^H2584 he would give ^H5414 a double ^H639 portion ^H4490, for he loved ^H157 Hannah ^H2584, but Yahweh ^H3068 had closed ^H5462 her womb ^H7358. 6 Her rival ^H6869, however, would provoke ^H3707 her bitterly ^H1571 H3708 to irritate ^H7481 her because ^H3588 Yahweh ^H3068 had closed ^H5462 her womb ^H7358. 7 And so it would happen ^H6213 year ^H8141 after year ^H8141, as often ^H1767 as she went ^H5927 up ^H5927 to the house ^H1004 of Yahweh ^H3068, she would provoke ^H3707 her; so she wept ^H1058 and would not eat ^H398. 8 Then Elkanah ^H511 her husband ^H376 said ^H559 to her, “Hannah ^H2584, why ^H4100 do you weep ^H1058 and why ^H4100 do you not eat ^H398 and why ^H4100 is ^H7489 your heart ^H3824 sad ^H7489? Am I not better ^H2896 to you than ^H4480 ten ^H6235 sons ^H1121?”

9 Then Hannah ^H2584 rose ^H6965 after ^H310 eating ^H398 and drinking ^H8354 in Shiloh ^H7887. Now Eli ^H5941 the priest ^H3548 was sitting ^H3427 on the seat ^H3678 by the doorpost ^H4201 of the temple ^H1964 of Yahweh ^H3068. 10 And she, bitter ^H4751 of soul ^H5315, prayed ^H6419 to Yahweh ^H3068 and wept ^H1058 despondently ^H1058. 11 And she made ^H5087 a vow ^H5088 and said ^H559, “O Yahweh ^H3068 of hosts ^H6635, if ^H518 You will indeed ^H7200 look ^H7200 on the affliction ^H6040 of Your maidservant ^H519 and remember ^H2142 me and not forget ^H7911 Your maidservant ^H519, but will give ^H5414 Your maidservant ^H519 a seed ^H2233 amongst men ^H376, then I will give ^H5414 him to Yahweh ^H3068 all ^H3605 the days ^H3117 of his life ^H2416, and a razor ^H4177 shall never ^H3808 come ^H5927 on his head ^H7218.”

12 Now it happened ^H1961, as she multiplied ^H7235 her praying ^H6419 before ^H6440 Yahweh ^H3068, that Eli ^H5941 was watching ^H8104 her mouth ^H6310. 13 As for Hannah ^H2584, she was speaking ^H1696 in her heart ^H3820; only ^H7534 her lips ^H8193 were moving ^H5128, but her voice ^H6963 was not heard ^H8085. So Eli ^H5941 thought ^H2803 she was drunk ^H7910. 14 Then Eli ^H5941 said ^H559 to her, “How ^H4970 long ^H5704 H4970 will you make ^H7937 yourself drunk ^H7937? Put ^H5493 away ^H5493 your wine ^H3196 from you.” 15 But Hannah ^H2584 answered ^H6030 and said ^H559, “No ^H369, my lord ^H113, I am a woman ^H802 [fn]oppressed ^H7186 in spirit ^H7307; I have drunk ^H8354 neither ^H3808 wine ^H3196 nor ^H3808 strong ^H7941 drink ^H7941, but I have poured ^H8210 out ^H8210 my soul ^H5315 before ^H6440 Yahweh ^H3068. 16 Do not [fn]consider ^H5414 your maidservant ^H519 as a vile ^H1100 woman ^H1323, for I have spoken ^H1696 until ^H5704 now ^H2008 out of my great ^H7230 complaint ^H7879 and [fn]provocation ^H3708.” 17 Then Eli ^H5941 answered ^H6030 and said ^H559, “Go ^H1980 in peace ^H7965; and may the God ^H430 of Israel ^H3478 grant ^H5414 your petition ^H7596 that you have asked ^H7592 of Him.” 18 And she said ^H559, “Let your servant-woman ^H8198 find ^H4672 favor ^H2580 in your sight ^H5869.” So the woman ^H802 went ^H1980 her way ^H1870 and ate ^H398, and her face ^H6440 was no ^H3808 longer ^H5750 sad.

The Birth of Samuel

19 Then they arose ^H7925 early ^H7925 in the morning ^H1242 and worshiped ^H2331 before ^H6440 Yahweh ^H3068 and turned ^H7725 back ^H7725 and came ^H935 to their house ^H1004 in ^H935 Ramah ^H7414. And Elkanah ^H511 knew ^H3045 Hannah ^H2584 his wife ^H802, and Yahweh ^H3068 remembered ^H2142 her.

20 Now it happened ^H1961 [fn]in due ^H8622 time ^H3117 that Hannah ^H2584 conceived ^H2029 and gave ^H3205 birth ^H3205 to a son ^H1121; and she named ^H7121 H8034 him Samuel ^H8050, saying, “Because ^H3588 I have asked ^H7592 him of Yahweh ^H3068.”

21 Then the man ^H376 Elkanah ^H511 went ^H5927 up ^H5927 with all ^H3605 his household ^H1004 to offer ^H2076 to Yahweh ^H3068 the yearly ^H3117 sacrifice ^H2077 and pay his vow ^H5088. 22 But Hannah ^H2584 did not go ^H5927 up ^H5927, for she said ^H559 to her husband ^H376, “I will not go up until ^H5704 the young ^H5288 boy ^H5288 is weaned ^H1580; then I will bring ^H935 him, that he may appear ^H7200 before ^H6440 Yahweh ^H3068 and stay ^H3427 there ^H8033 forever ^H5704 H5769.” 23 And Elkanah ^H511 her husband ^H376 said ^H559 to her, “Do ^H6213 what ^H2896 is good ^H2896 in your eyes ^H5869. Remain ^H3427 until ^H5704 you have weaned ^H1580 him; only ^H389 may Yahweh ^H3068 establish ^H6965 His word ^H1697.” So the woman ^H802 remained ^H3427 and nursed ^H3243 her son ^H1121 until ^H5704 she weaned ^H1580 him. 24 Now when ^H834 she had weaned ^H1580 him, she took ^H5927 him up ^H5927 with her, with a three-year-old ^H7969 bull ^H6499 and one ^H259 [fn]ephah ^H374 of flour ^H7058 and a jug ^H5035 of wine ^H3196 and brought ^H935 him to the house ^H1004 of Yahweh ^H3068 in Shiloh ^H7887, although the boy ^H5288 was young ^H5288. 25 Then they slaughtered ^H7819 the bull ^H6499 and brought ^H935 the young ^H5288 boy ^H5288 to Eli ^H5941. 26 And she said ^H559, “Oh ^H994, my lord ^H113! As your soul ^H5315 lives ^H2416, my lord ^H113, I am the woman ^H802 who stood ^H5324 here ^H2088 beside ^H5973 you, praying ^H6419 to Yahweh ^H3068. 27 For this ^H2088 young ^H5288 boy ^H5288 I prayed ^H6419, and Yahweh ^H3068 has given ^H5414 me my petition ^H7596 which ^H834 I asked ^H7592 of Him. 28 So I have also ^H1571 [fn]dedicated ^H7592 him to Yahweh ^H3068; as ^H3605 H3117 long ^H3605 H3117 as he lives ^H1961, he is [fn]dedicated ^H7592 to Yahweh ^H3068.” So he worshiped ^H2331 Yahweh ^H3068 there ^H8033.
