Honor Widows

1 Do not sharply ^G1969 rebuke ^G1969 an older ^G4245 man ^G4245, but rather plead ^G3870 with him as a father ^G3962, to the younger ^G3501 men ^G3501 as brothers ^G80,

2 the older ^G4245 women ^G4245 as mothers ^G3384, and the younger ^G3501 women ^G3501 as sisters ^G79, in all ^G3956 purity ^G47.

3 Honor ^G5091 widows ^G5503 who are widows ^G5503 indeed ^G3689, 4 but if ^G1487 any ^G5100 widow ^G5503 has ^G2192 children ^G5043 or ^G2228 grandchildren ^G1549, they must first ^G4413 learn ^G3129 to practice ^G2151 piety ^G2151 in regard to their own ^G2398 family ^G3624 and to [fn]make ^G591 some return ^G591 to their parents ^G4269; for this ^G3778 is acceptable ^G587 in ^G1799 the ^G1799 sight ^G1799 of ^G1799 God ^G2316. 5 Now ^G1161 she who is a widow ^G5503 indeed ^G3689 and who has been left ^G3443 alone ^G3443, has fixed ^G1679 her hope ^G1679 on God ^G2316 and continues ^G4357 in petitions ^G1162 and prayers ^G4335 night ^G3571 and day ^G2250. 6 But she who lives ^G4684 in ^G4684 self-indulgence ^G4684 is dead ^G2348 even while she lives ^G2198. 7 And command ^G3853 these ^G3778 things ^G3778 as well ^G2532, so ^G2443 that they may be above ^G423 reproach ^G423. 8 But if ^G1487 anyone ^G5100 does not provide ^G4306 for his own ^G2398, and especially ^G3122 for those ^G3609 of ^G3609 his household ^G3609, he has denied ^G720 the faith ^G4102 and is worse ^G5501 than an unbeliever ^G571.

Honoring the Elders

17 The elders ^G4245 who lead ^G4291 well ^G2573 are to be considered ^G515 worthy ^G515 of double ^G1362 honor ^G5092, especially ^G3122 those ^G3588 who labor ^G2872 [fn]at preaching the word ^G3056 and teaching ^G1319.

18 For the Scripture ^G1124 says ^G3004, “YOU SHALL NOT MUZZLE ^G5392 THE OX ^G1016 WHILE IT IS THRESHING ^G248,” and “THE LABORER ^G2040 IS WORTHY ^G514 OF HIS WAGES ^G3408.” 19 Do not receive ^G3858 an accusation ^G2724 against ^G2596 an elder ^G4245 except ^G1622 G1508 on the basis ^G1909 of two ^G1417 or ^G2228 three ^G5140 witnesses ^G3144. 20 Those ^G3588 who continue in sin ^G264, reprove ^G1651 in ^G1799 the ^G1799 presence ^G1799 of ^G1799 all ^G3956, so ^G2443 that the rest ^G3062 also ^G2532 will be fearful ^G5401. 21 I solemnly ^G1263 charge ^G1263 you in ^G1799 the ^G1799 presence ^G1799 of ^G1799 God ^G2316 and of Christ ^G5547 Jesus ^G2424 and of His elect ^G1588 angels ^G32, to observe ^G5442 these ^G3778 instructions without ^G5565 bias ^G4299, doing ^G4160 nothing ^G3367 in partiality ^G4346. 22 Do not lay ^G2007 hands ^G5495 upon ^G2007 anyone ^G3367 hastily ^G5030 and [fn]thereby ^G3366 share ^G2841 responsibility for the sins ^G266 of others ^G245; keep ^G5083 yourself ^G4572 pure ^G53.

23 No ^G3371 longer ^G3371 drink ^G5202 water ^G5202 only, but use ^G5530 a little ^G3641 wine ^G3631 for the sake ^G1223 of your stomach ^G4751 and your frequent ^G4437 ailments ^G769.

24 The sins ^G266 of some ^G5100 men ^G444 are quite ^G4271 evident ^G4271, going ^G4254 before ^G4254 them to judgment ^G2920; for others ^G5100, their sins follow ^G1872 after ^G1872. 25 So ^G5615 also ^G2532 good ^G2570 works ^G2041 are quite ^G4271 evident ^G4271, and those ^G3588 which are otherwise ^G247 cannot ^G1410 G3756 be concealed ^G2928.
