David Anointed King over All Israel

1 Then all ^H3605 Israel ^H3478 gathered ^H6908 to David ^H1732 at Hebron ^H2275 [fn]and said ^H559, “Behold ^H2009, we are your bone ^H6106 and your flesh ^H1320.

2 Previously ^{H1571 H8032 H8543}, even ^H1571 when Saul ^H7586 was king ^H4428, you were the one who led ^H3318 out ^H3318 and brought ^H935 in ^H935 Israel ^H3478; and Yahweh ^H3068 your God ^H430 said ^H559 to you, ‘You will shepherd ^H7462 My people ^H5971 Israel ^H3478, and you will be a ruler ^H5057 over ^H5921 My people ^H5971 Israel ^H3478.’” 3 So all ^H3605 the elders ^H2205 of Israel ^H3478 came ^H935 to the king ^H4428 at Hebron ^H2275, and David ^H1732 cut ^H3772 a covenant ^H1285 with them in Hebron ^H2275 before ^H6440 Yahweh ^H3068; then they anointed ^H4886 David ^H1732 king ^H4428 over ^H5921 Israel ^H3478, according to the word ^H1697 of Yahweh ^H3068 through ^H3027 Samuel ^H8050.

David Captures Jerusalem

4 Then David ^H1732 and all ^H3605 Israel ^H3478 went ^H1980 to Jerusalem ^H3389 (that is, Jebus ^H2982); and the Jebusites ^H2983, the inhabitants ^H3427 of the land ^H776, were there ^H8033.

5 Then the inhabitants ^H3427 of Jebus ^H2982 said ^H559 to David ^H1732, “You shall not come ^H935 in ^H935 here ^H2008.” Nevertheless, David ^H1732 captured ^H3920 the fortress ^H4686 of Zion ^H6726, that is, the city ^H5892 of David ^H1732. 6 And David ^H1732 said ^H559, “Whoever ^H3605 strikes ^H5221 down ^H5221 a Jebusite ^H2983 first ^H7223 shall be chief ^H7218 and commander ^H8269.” Joab ^H3097 the son ^H1121 of Zeruiah ^H6870 went ^H5927 up ^H5927 first ^H7223, so he became ^H1961 chief ^H7218. 7 Then David ^H1732 lived ^H3427 in the stronghold ^H4679; therefore ^H5921 H3651 it was called ^H7121 the city ^H5892 of David ^H1732. 8 And he [fn]built ^H1129 the city ^H5892 all ^H5439 around ^H5439, from the [fn]Millo ^H4407 even to the surrounding ^H5439 area ^H5439; and Joab ^H3097 [fn]repaired ^H2421 the rest ^H7605 of the city ^H5892. 9 And David ^H1732 became ^H1980 greater ^H1980 and greater ^H1419, and Yahweh ^H3068 of hosts ^H6635 was with him.

David’s Mighty Men

10 Now these ^H428 are the heads ^H7218 of the mighty ^H1368 men ^H1368 whom ^H834 David ^H1732 had, who gave ^H2388 him strong ^H2388 support ^H2388 in his kingdom ^H4438, together ^H5973 with ^H5973 all ^H3605 Israel ^H3478, to make ^H4427 him king ^H4427, according to the word ^H1697 of Yahweh ^H3068 concerning ^H5921 Israel ^H3478.

11 These ^H428 constitute the list ^H4557 of the mighty ^H1368 men ^H1368 whom ^H834 David ^H1732 had: Jashobeam ^H3434, the son ^H1121 of a Hachmonite ^H2453, the chief ^H7218 of the thirty ^H7970; he lifted ^H5782 up ^H5782 his spear ^H2595 against ^H5921 three ^H7969 hundred ^H3967 [fn]slain ^H2491 by him at one ^H259 time ^H6471.

12 And after ^H310 him was Eleazar ^H499 the son ^H1121 of Dodo ^H1734, the Ahohite ^H266, who ^H1931 was [fn]one of the three ^H7969 mighty ^H1368 men ^H1368. 13 He was with David ^H1732 at [fn]Pasdammim ^H6450. Now the Philistines ^H6430 had gathered ^H622 together there ^H8033 to battle ^H4421, and there was a portion ^H2513 of the field ^H7704 full ^H4392 of barley ^H8184; and the people ^H5971 fled ^H5127 from before ^H4480 H6440 the Philistines ^H6430. 14 But they took ^H3320 their stand ^H3320 in the midst ^H8432 of that portion ^H2513 and delivered ^H5337 it, and struck ^H5221 down ^H5221 the Philistines ^H6430. So Yahweh ^H3068 saved ^H3467 them by a great ^H1419 salvation ^H8668.

15 Then three ^H7969 of the thirty ^H7970 chief ^H7218 men ^H7218 went ^H3381 down ^H3381 to the rock ^H6697 to David ^H1732, to the cave ^H4631 of Adullam ^H5725, while the camp ^H4264 of the Philistines ^H6430 was camping ^H2583 in the valley ^H6010 of Rephaim ^H7497. 16 And David ^H1732 was then ^H227 in the fortress ^H4686, while the garrison ^H5333 of the Philistines ^H6430 was then ^H227 in Bethlehem ^H1035. 17 Then David ^H1732 had ^H183 a craving ^H183 and said ^H559, “Oh ^H4310 that someone ^H4310 would give ^H8248 me water ^H4325 to ^H8248 drink ^H8248 from the well ^H953 of Bethlehem ^H1035, which ^H834 is by the gate ^H8179!” 18 So the three ^H7969 broke ^H1234 through ^H1234 the camp ^H4264 of the Philistines ^H6430 and drew ^H7579 water ^H4325 from the well ^H953 of Bethlehem ^H1035 which ^H834 was by the gate ^H8179, and carried ^H5375 it and brought ^H935 it to David ^H1732. 20 Now [fn]Abshai ^H52, the brother ^H251 of Joab ^H3097, was chief ^H7218 of the [fn]thirty ^H7970. And he swung ^H5782 his spear ^H2595 against ^H5921 three ^H7969 hundred ^H3967 [fn]who were slain ^H2491 by him; and he had a name ^H8034 as well as the [fn]thirty ^H7970. 21 Of the three ^H7969 in the second ^H8147 rank he was the most honored ^H3513 and became ^H1961 their commander ^H8269; however, he did not attain ^H935 to the first three ^H7969.

22 Benaiah ^H1141 the son ^H1121 of Jehoiada ^H3077, the son ^H1121 of a valiant ^H2428 man ^H376 of Kabzeel ^H6909, mighty ^H7227 in deeds ^H6467, struck ^H5221 down ^H5221 the [fn]two ^H8147 sons of Ariel ^H739 of Moab ^H4124. He also went ^H3381 down ^H3381 and struck ^H5221 down ^H5221 a lion ^H738 in the midst ^H8432 of a pit ^H953 on a snowy ^H7950 day ^H3117. 23 He had also struck ^H5221 down ^H5221 an Egyptian ^H4713, [fn]an impressive ^H4060 man ^H376, [fn]five ^H2568 cubits ^H520 tall. Now in the Egyptian’s ^H4713 hand ^H3027 was a spear ^H2595 like a weaver’s ^H707 beam ^H4500, but he went ^H3381 down ^H3381 to him with a club ^H7626 and snatched ^H1497 the spear ^H2595 from the Egyptian’s ^H4713 hand ^H3027 and killed ^H2026 him with his own spear ^H2595. 24 These ^H428 things Benaiah ^H1141 the son ^H1121 of Jehoiada ^H3077 did ^H6213, and had a name ^H8034 as well as the three ^H7969 mighty ^H1368 men ^H1368. 25 Behold ^H2009, he was honored ^H3513 among ^H4480 the thirty ^H7970, but he did not attain ^H935 to the three ^H7969. And David ^H1732 appointed ^H7760 him over ^H5921 his guard ^H4928.

26 Now the mighty ^H1368 men ^H1368 of the military ^H2428 forces ^H2428 were
