Jonathan Slaughters the Philistines

1 Now the day ^H3117 came ^H1961 that Jonathan ^H3083, the son ^H1121 of Saul ^H7586, said ^H559 to the young ^H5288 man ^H5288 who was carrying ^H5375 his armor ^H3627, “Come ^H1980 and let us cross ^H5674 over ^H5674 to the Philistines’ ^H6430 garrison ^H4673 that is on the other ^H5676 side ^H5676.” But he did not tell ^H5046 his father ^H1.

2 And Saul ^H7586 was staying ^H3427 in the outskirts ^H7097 of Gibeah ^H1390 under ^H8478 the pomegranate ^H7416 tree ^H7416 which ^H834 is in Migron ^H4051. Saul’s Oath Makes the People Weary

Will You give ^H5414 them into the hand ^H3027 of Israel ^H3478?” But He did not answer ^H6030 him on that day ^H3117. 38 And Saul ^H7586 said ^H559, “Draw ^H5066 near ^H5066 here ^H1988, all ^H3605 you [fn]chiefs ^H6438 of the people ^H5971, and know ^H3045 and see ^H7200 how ^H4100 this ^H2088 sin ^H2403 has happened ^H1961 today ^H3117. 39 For as Yahweh ^H3068 lives ^H2416, who saves ^H3467 Israel ^H3478, though ^H3588 H518 it is in Jonathan ^H3083 my son ^H1121, he shall surely ^H3588 H4191 die ^H4191.” But not ^H369 one ^H369 of all ^H3605 the people ^H5971 answered ^H6030 him. 40 Then he said ^H559 to all ^H3605 Israel ^H3478, “You shall be on one ^H259 side ^H5676, and I and Jonathan ^H3083 my son ^H1121 will be on the other ^H259 side ^H5676.” And the people ^H5971 said ^H559 to Saul ^H7586, “Do ^H6213 what ^H2896 seems good ^H2896 in your eyes ^H5869.” 41 Therefore, Saul ^H7586 said ^H559 to Yahweh ^H3068, the God ^H430 of Israel ^H3478, “Give ^H3051 a perfect ^H8549 lot.” And Jonathan ^H3083 and Saul ^H7586 were taken ^H3920, but the people ^H5971 escaped ^H3318. 42 And Saul ^H7586 said ^H559, “Cast ^H5307 lots between ^H996 me and Jonathan ^H3083 my son ^H1121.” And Jonathan ^H3083 was taken ^H3920.

43 Then Saul ^H7586 said ^H559 to Jonathan ^H3083, “Tell ^H5046 me what ^H4100 you have done ^H6213.” So Jonathan ^H3083 told ^H5046 him and said ^H559, “I indeed ^H2938 tasted ^H2938 a little ^H4592 honey ^H1706 with the end ^H7097 of the staff ^H4294 that was in my hand ^H3027. Here ^H2009 I am; I must die ^H4191!” 44 And Saul ^H7586 said ^H559, “May God ^H430 do ^H6213 [fn]this ^H3541 to me and more ^H3254 also ^H3541, for you shall surely ^H4191 die ^H4191, Jonathan ^H3083.” 45 But the people ^H5971 said ^H559 to Saul ^H7586, “Must Jonathan ^H3083 die ^H4191, who ^H834 has [fn]brought ^H6213 about ^H6213 this ^H2088 great ^H1419 salvation ^H3444 in Israel ^H3478? Far ^H2486 from it! As Yahweh ^H3068 lives ^H2416, not one hair ^H8185 of his head ^H7218 shall fall ^H5307 to the ground ^H776, for he has worked ^H6213 with God ^H430 this ^H2088 day ^H3117.” So the people ^H5971 [fn]redeemed ^H6299 Jonathan ^H3083, and he did not die ^H4191. 46 Then Saul ^H7586 went ^H5927 up ^H5927 from [fn]pursuing ^H310 the Philistines ^H6430, and the Philistines ^H6430 went ^H1980 to their own place ^H4725.

Saul Fights Against His Enemies

47 Now Saul ^H7586 had taken ^H3920 the kingdom ^H4410 over ^H5921 Israel ^H3478, and he fought ^H3898 against all ^H3605 his enemies ^H340 on every ^H5439 side ^H5439, against Moab ^H4124, the sons ^H1121 of Ammon ^H5983, Edom ^H123, the kings ^H4428 of Zobah ^H6678, and the Philistines ^H6430; and wherever ^H3605 H834 he turned ^H6437, he [fn]inflicted ^H7561 punishment ^H7561.

49 Now the sons ^H1121 of Saul ^H7586 were Jonathan ^H3083 and Ishvi ^H3440 and Malchi-shua ^H4444; and the names ^H8034 of his two ^H8147 daughters ^H1323 were these: the name ^H8034 of the firstborn ^H1067 Merab ^H4764 and the name ^H8034 of the younger ^H6996 Michal ^H4324. 50 And the name ^H8034 of Saul’s ^H7586 wife ^H802 was Ahinoam ^H293 the daughter ^H1323 of Ahimaaz ^H290. And the name ^H8034 of the commander ^H8269 of his army ^H6635 was Abner ^H74 the son ^H1121 of Ner ^H5369, Saul’s ^H7586 uncle ^H1730. 51 And Kish ^H7027 was the father ^H1 of Saul ^H7586, and Ner ^H5369 the father ^H1 of Abner ^H74 was the son ^H1121 of Abiel ^H22.

52 Now the war ^H4421 against ^H5921 the Philistines ^H6430 was severe ^H2389 all ^H3605 the days ^H3117 of Saul ^H7586; and Saul ^H7586 would see ^H7200 any ^H3605 mighty ^H1368 man ^H376 or any ^H3605 man ^H1121 of valor ^H2428 and would gather ^H622 him to [fn]his staff.
