Joash Reigns over Judah

1 Joash ^H3060 was seven ^H7651 years ^H8141 old ^H1121 when he became ^H4427 king ^H4427, and he reigned ^H4427 forty ^H705 years ^H8141 in Jerusalem ^H3389; and his mother’s ^H517 name ^H8034 was Zibiah ^H6645 from Beersheba ^H884.

2 And Joash ^H3060 did ^H6213 what ^H3477 was ^H3477 right ^H3477 in the sight ^H5869 of Yahweh ^H3068 all ^H3605 the days ^H3117 of Jehoiada ^H3077 the priest ^H3548. 3 And Jehoiada ^H3077 took ^H5375 up ^H5375 two ^H8147 wives ^H802 for him, and he became ^H3205 the father ^H3205 of sons ^H1121 and daughters ^H1323.

The Levites Did Not Act Quickly

4 Now it happened ^H1961 afterwards ^H3651 H310, that Joash ^H3060 [fn]had ^H1961 in ^H5973 his heart ^H3820 to restore ^H2318 the house ^H1004 of Yahweh ^H3068.

5 And he gathered ^H6908 the priests ^H3548 and Levites ^H3881 and said ^H559 to them, “Go ^H3318 out ^H3318 to the cities ^H5892 of Judah ^H3063 and gather ^H6908 money ^H3701 from all ^H3605 Israel ^H3478 to [fn]repair ^H2388 the house ^H1004 of your God ^H430 [fn]annually ^H1767 H8141, and you shall do ^H4116 the matter ^H1697 quickly ^H4116.” But the Levites ^H3881 did not act ^H4116 quickly ^H4116. 6 So the king ^H4428 called ^H7121 for Jehoiada ^H3077 the chief ^H7218 priest and said ^H559 to him, “Why ^H4069 have you not required ^H1875 the Levites ^H3881 to bring ^H935 in ^H935 from Judah ^H3063 and from Jerusalem ^H3389 the levy ^H4864 fixed by Moses ^H4872 the servant ^H5650 of Yahweh ^H3068 on the congregation ^H6951 of Israel ^H3478 for the tent ^H168 of the testimony ^H5715?” 7 For the sons ^H1121 of the wicked ^H4849 Athaliah ^H6271 had broken ^H6555 into ^H6555 the house ^H1004 of God ^H430 and even ^H1571 [fn]used ^H6213 the holy ^H6944 things ^H6944 of the house ^H1004 of Yahweh ^H3068 for the Baals ^H1168.

The House of Yahweh Restored

8 So the king ^H4428 said ^H559 the word, and they made ^H6213 a chest ^H727 and put ^H5414 it outside ^H2351 by the gate ^H8179 of the house ^H1004 of Yahweh ^H3068.

9 And they [fn]made ^H5414 a proclamation ^H6963 in Judah ^H3063 and Jerusalem ^H3389 to bring ^H935 to Yahweh ^H3068 the levy ^H4864 fixed by Moses ^H4872 the servant ^H5650 of God ^H430 on Israel ^H3478 in the wilderness ^H4057. 10 And all ^H3605 the officials ^H8269 and all ^H3605 the people ^H5971 were glad ^H8055 and brought ^H935 in their levies and [fn]dropped ^H7993 them into the chest ^H727 until ^H5704 they had [fn]finished ^H3615. 11 Now it happened ^H1961 that whenever ^H6256 the chest ^H727 was brought ^H935 in ^H935 to the king’s ^H4428 officer ^H6496 by the hand ^H3027 of the Levites ^H3881, and when they saw ^H7200 that there was much ^H7227 money ^H3701, then the king’s ^H4428 scribe ^H5608 and the chief ^H7218 priest’s ^H3548 officer ^H6496 would come ^H935, empty ^H6168 the chest ^H727, take ^H5375 it, and return ^H7725 it to its place ^H4725. Thus ^H3541 they did ^H6213 daily ^H3117 and collected ^H622 much ^H7230 money ^H3701. 12 And the king ^H4428 and Jehoiada ^H3077 gave ^H5414 it to those who did ^H6213 the work ^H4399 of the service ^H5656 of the house ^H1004 of Yahweh ^H3068; and they hired ^H7936 masons ^H2672 and [fn]carpenters ^H2796 to restore ^H2318 the house ^H1004 of Yahweh ^H3068, and also ^H1571 craftsmen ^H2796 in iron ^H1270 and bronze ^H5178 to [fn]repair ^H2388 the house ^H1004 of Yahweh ^H3068. 13 So those who did ^H6213 the work ^H4399 labored ^H6213, and the repair ^H724 work ^H4399 progressed ^H5927 in their hands ^H3027, and they [fn]restored ^H5975 the house ^H1004 of God ^H430 [fn]according ^H5921 to its specifications ^H4971 and strengthened ^H553 it. 14 When they had completed ^H3615, they brought ^H935 the rest ^H7605 of the money ^H3701 before ^H6440 the king ^H4428 and Jehoiada ^H3077; and it was made ^H6213 into utensils ^H3627 for the house ^H1004 of Yahweh ^H3068, utensils ^H3627 for the ministry ^H8335 and the burnt ^H5930 offering ^H5930, and pans ^H3709 and utensils ^H3627 of gold ^H2091 and silver ^H3701. And they were offering ^H5927 burnt ^H5930 offerings ^H5930 in the house ^H1004 of Yahweh ^H3068 continually ^H8548 all ^H3605 the days ^H3117 of Jehoiada ^H3077.

15 Then Jehoiada ^H3077 became old ^H2204 and full ^H7646 of days ^H3117, and he died ^H4191; he was 130 ^H3967 H7970 years ^H8141 old ^H1121 at his death ^H4194. 16 They buried ^H6912 him in the city ^H5892 of David ^H1732 among ^H5973 the kings ^H4428, because ^H3588 he had done ^H6213 what is good ^H2896 in Israel ^H3478 and [fn]to God ^H430 and His house ^H1004.

17 But after ^H310 the death ^H4194 of Jehoiada ^H3077 the officials ^H8269 of Judah ^H3063 came ^H935 and bowed ^H2331 down ^H2331 to the king ^H4428, and the king ^H4428 listened ^H8085 to them. 18 And they forsook ^H5800 the house ^H1004 of Yahweh ^H3068, the God ^H430 of their fathers ^H1, and served ^H5647 the [fn]Asherim ^H842 and the idols ^H6091; so wrath ^H7110 came ^H1961 upon Judah ^H3063 and Jerusalem ^H3389 for this ^H2088 their guilt ^H819. 19 Yet He sent ^H7971 prophets ^H5030 to them to bring ^H7725 them back ^H7725 to Yahweh ^H3068; though they testified ^H5749 against them, they did not give ^H238 ear ^H238.

People Conspire Against Zechariah

20 Now the Spirit ^H7307 of God ^H430 clothed ^H3847 Zechariah ^H2148 the son ^H1121 of Jehoiada ^H3077 the priest ^H3548; and he stood ^H5975 above ^H4480 H5921 the people ^H5971 and said ^H559 to them, “Thus ^H3541 says ^H559 God ^H430, ‘Why ^H4100 do you trespass ^H5674 against the commandments ^H4687 of Yahweh ^H3068 and do not succeed ^H6743? Because ^H3588 you have forsaken ^H5800 Yahweh ^H3068, He has also forsaken ^H5800 you.’”

21 So they conspired ^H7194 against ^H5921 him and at the command ^H4687 of the king ^H4428 they stoned ^H7275 him [fn]to death ^H68 in the court ^H2691 of the house ^H1004 of Yahweh ^H3068. 22 Thus Joash ^H3060 the king ^H4428 did not remember ^H2142 the lovingkindness ^H2617 which ^H834 his father ^H1 Jehoiada ^H3077 had shown ^H6213 him, but he killed ^H2026 his son ^H1121. And as he died ^H4194 he said ^H559, “May Yahweh ^H3068 see ^H7200 and [fn]avenge ^H1875!”

Aram Comes Up Against Judah

23 Now it happened ^H1961 at the turn ^H8622 of the year ^H8141 that the military ^H2428 force ^H2428 of the Arameans ^H758 came ^H5927 up ^H5927 against ^H5921 him; and they came ^H935 to Judah ^H3063 and Jerusalem ^H3389, destroyed ^H7843 all ^H3605 the officials ^H8269 of the people ^H5971 from among the people ^H5971, and sent ^H7971 all ^H3605 their spoil ^H7998 to the king ^H4428 of Damascus ^H1834.

24 Indeed ^H3588 the military ^H2428 force ^H2428 of the Arameans ^H758 came ^H935 with a small ^H4705 number of men ^H376; yet Yahweh ^H3068 gave ^H5414 a very ^H3966 great ^H7230 military ^H2428 force ^H2428 into their hands ^H3027, because ^H3588 they had forsaken ^H5800 Yahweh ^H3068, the God ^H430 of their fathers ^H1. Thus they executed ^H6213 judgment ^H8201 on Joash ^H3060.

25 When they had gone ^H1980 from him (for they left ^H5800 him very ^H7227 sick ^H4251), his servants ^H5650 conspired ^H7194 against ^H5921 him because of the blood ^H1818 of the [fn]son ^H1121 of Jehoiada ^H3077 the priest ^H3548, and killed ^H2026 him on his bed ^H4296. So he died ^H4191, and they buried ^H6912 him in the city ^H5892 of David ^H1732, but they did not bury ^H6912 him in the tombs ^H6913 of the kings ^H4428. 26 Now these ^H428 are those who conspired ^H7194 against ^H5921 him: Zabad ^H2066 the son ^H1121 of Shimeath ^H8100 the Ammonitess ^H5985, and Jehozabad ^H3075 the son ^H1121 of Shimrith ^H8116 the Moabitess ^H4125. 27 Now as to his sons ^H1121 and the many ^H7230 [fn]oracles ^H4853 against ^H5921 him and the [fn]rebuilding ^H3245 of the house ^H1004 of God ^H430, behold ^H2009, they are written ^H3789 in the [fn]treatise ^H4097 of the Book ^H5612 of the Kings ^H4428. Then Amaziah ^H558 his son ^H1121 became ^H4427 king ^H4427 in ^H8478 his place ^H8478.
