Amaziah Reigns over Judah

1 Amaziah ^H558 was twenty-five ^H6242 H2568 years ^H8141 old ^H1121 when he became ^H4427 king ^H4427, and he reigned ^H4427 twenty-nine ^H6242 H8672 years ^H8141 in Jerusalem ^H3389. And his mother’s ^H517 name ^H8034 was Jehoaddan ^H3086 of Jerusalem ^H3389.

2 And he did ^H6213 what ^H3477 was ^H3477 right ^H3477 in the sight ^H5869 of Yahweh ^H3068, yet ^H7534 not with a whole ^H8003 heart ^H3824. 3 Now it happened ^H1961 as soon ^H834 as the kingdom ^H4467 was ^H2388 [fn]strong ^H2388 in his grasp ^H5921, that he killed ^H2026 his servants ^H5650 who had struck ^H5221 down ^H5221 the king ^H4428 his father ^H1. 4 But he did not put ^H4191 their sons ^H1121 to ^H4191 death ^H4191, but did as it is written ^H3789 in the law ^H8451 in the book ^H5612 of Moses ^H4872, which ^H834 Yahweh ^H3068 commanded ^H6680, saying ^H559, “Fathers ^H1 shall not be put ^H4191 to ^H4191 death ^H4191 for their sons ^H1121, nor ^H3808 sons ^H1121 be put ^H4191 to ^H4191 death ^H4191 for their fathers ^H1, but each ^H376 shall be put ^H4191 to ^H4191 death ^H4191 for his own sin ^H2399.”

Amaziah Is Strong in Battle

5 Moreover, Amaziah ^H558 assembled ^H6908 Judah ^H3063 and appointed ^H5975 them according to their fathers’ ^H1 households ^H1004 under commanders ^H8269 of thousands ^H505 and commanders ^H8269 of hundreds ^H3967 throughout ^H3605 Judah ^H3063 and Benjamin ^H1144; and he [fn]took ^H6485 a ^H6485 census ^H6485 of those from twenty ^H6242 years ^H8141 old ^H1121 and upward ^H4605 and found ^H4672 them to be 300,000 ^{H7969 H3967 H505} choice ^H970 men, able to go ^H3318 out ^H3318 for military duty ^H6635, able to handle ^H270 spear ^H7420 and large ^H6793 shield ^H6793.

6 And he hired ^H7936 also 100,000 ^H3967 H505 mighty ^H1368 men ^H1368 of valor ^H2428 out of Israel ^H3478 for one hundred ^H3967 [fn]talents ^H3603 of silver ^H3701. 7 But a man ^H376 of God ^H430 came ^H935 to him saying ^H559, “O king ^H4428, do not let the army ^H6635 of Israel ^H3478 go ^H935 with you, for Yahweh ^H3068 is not with Israel ^H3478 nor with any ^H3605 of the sons ^H1121 of Ephraim ^H669. 8 But if ^H518 you do go ^H935, do ^H6213 it, be strong ^H2388 for the battle ^H4421; yet God ^H430 will cause ^H3782 you to stumble ^H3782 before ^H6440 the enemy ^H340, for God ^H430 has ^H3426 power ^H3581 to help ^H5826 and to cause ^H3782 to stumble ^H3782.” 9 Then Amaziah ^H558 said ^H559 to the man ^H376 of God ^H430, “But what ^H4100 shall we do ^H6213 for the hundred ^H3967 talents ^H3603 which ^H834 I have given ^H5414 to the troops ^H1416 of Israel ^H3478?” And the man ^H376 of God ^H430 answered ^H559, “Yahweh ^H3068 has ^H3426 much ^H7235 more ^H7235 to give ^H5414 you than ^H4480 this ^H2088.” 10 Then Amaziah ^H558 [fn]dismissed ^H914 them, the troops ^H1416 which ^H834 came ^H935 to him from Ephraim ^H669, to go ^H1980 [fn]home ^H4725; so their anger ^H639 burned ^H2734 against Judah ^H3063 and they returned ^H7725 [fn]home ^H4725 in burning ^H2750 anger ^H639.

11 Now Amaziah ^H558 strengthened ^H2388 himself and led ^H5090 his people ^H5971 forth ^H5090, and went ^H1980 to the Valley ^H1516 of Salt ^H4417 and struck ^H5221 down ^H5221 10,000 ^H6235 H505 of the sons ^H1121 of Seir ^H8165. 12 The sons ^H1121 of Judah ^H3063 also captured ^H7617 10,000 ^H6235 H505 alive ^H2416 and brought ^H935 them to the top ^H7218 of the cliff ^H5553 and threw ^H7993 them down ^H7993 from the top ^H7218 of the cliff ^H5553, so that they were all ^H3605 split ^H1234 open ^H1234. 13 But the [fn]troops ^H1121 H1416 whom ^H834 Amaziah ^H558 sent ^H7725 back ^H7725 from going ^H1980 with him to battle ^H4421, raided ^H6584 the cities ^H5892 of Judah ^H3063, from Samaria ^H8111 to Beth-horon ^H1032, and struck ^H5221 down ^H5221 3,000 ^H7969 H505 of them and plundered ^H962 much ^H7227 plunder ^H961.

Amaziah Worships the Edomites’ Gods

14 Now it happened that after ^H310 Amaziah ^H558 came ^H1961 from striking ^H5221 down ^H5221 the Edomites ^H130, he brought ^H935 the gods ^H430 of the sons ^H1121 of Seir ^H8165, set ^H5975 them up as his gods ^H430, worshiped ^H2331 them, and burned ^H6999 incense ^H6999 to them.

15 Then the anger ^H639 of Yahweh ^H3068 burned ^H2734 against Amaziah ^H558, and He sent ^H7971 him a prophet ^H5030 who said ^H559 to him, “Why ^H4100 have you sought ^H1875 the gods ^H430 of the people ^H5971 who ^H834 have not delivered ^H5337 their own people ^H5971 from your hand ^H3027?” 16 Now it happened that as he was talking ^H1696 with him, [fn]the king said ^H559 to him, “Have we given ^H5414 you to be a royal ^H4428 counselor ^H3289? Stop ^H2308! Why ^H4100 should you be struck ^H5221 down ^H5221?” Then the prophet ^H5030 stopped ^H2308 and said ^H559, “I know ^H3045 that God ^H430 has counseled ^H3289 to destroy ^H7843 you, because ^H3588 you have done ^H6213 this ^H2088 and have not listened ^H8085 to my counsel ^H6098.”

Amaziah Defeated by Joash of Israel

17 Then Amaziah ^H558 king ^H4428 of Judah ^H3063 took ^H3289 counsel ^H3289 and sent ^H7971 to Joash ^H3060 the son ^H1121 of Jehoahaz ^H3059 the son ^H1121 of Jehu ^H3058, the king ^H4428 of Israel ^H3478, saying ^H559, “Come ^H1980, let us face ^H7200 H6440 each other.”

18 And Joash ^H3060 the king ^H4428 of Israel ^H3478 sent ^H7971 to Amaziah ^H558 king ^H4428 of Judah ^H3063, saying ^H559, “The thorn ^H2336 bush ^H2336 which ^H834 was in Lebanon ^H3844 sent ^H7971 to the cedar ^H730 which ^H834 was in Lebanon ^H3844, saying ^H559, ‘Give ^H5414 your daughter ^H1323 to my son ^H1121 as a wife ^H802.’ But a beast ^H2416 of the field ^H7704 that was in Lebanon ^H3844 passed ^H5674 by ^H5674 and trampled ^H7429 the thorn ^H2336 bush ^H2336. 19 You said ^H559, ‘Behold ^H2009, you have struck ^H5221 down ^H5221 Edom ^H123.’ And your heart ^H3820 has lifted ^H5375 you up ^H5375 to boast ^H3513. Now ^H6258 stay ^H3427 at home ^H1004; for why ^H4100 should you provoke ^H1624 calamity ^H7451 so that you, even you, would fall ^H5307 and Judah ^H3063 with you?”

20 But Amaziah ^H558 would not listen ^H8085, for it was from God ^H430, that He might give ^H5414 them into the hand ^H3027 of Joash because ^H3588 they had sought ^H1875 the gods ^H430 of Edom ^H123. 21 So Joash ^H3060 king ^H4428 of Israel ^H3478 went ^H5927 up ^H5927, and he and Amaziah ^H558 king ^H4428 of Judah ^H3063 faced ^H7200 H6440 each other at Beth-shemesh ^H1053, which ^H834 belonged to Judah ^H3063. 22 And Judah ^H3063 was [fn]defeated ^H5062 by Israel ^H3478, and they fled ^H5127 each ^H376 to his tent ^H168. 23 Then Joash ^H3060 king ^H4428 of Israel ^H3478 seized ^H8610 Amaziah ^H558 king ^H4428 of Judah ^H3063, the son ^H1121 of Joash ^H3060 the son ^H1121 of Jehoahaz ^H3059, at Beth-shemesh ^H1053, and brought ^H935 him to Jerusalem ^H3389 and broke ^H6555 down ^H6555 the wall ^H2346 of Jerusalem ^H3389 from the Gate ^H8179 of Ephraim ^H669 to the Corner ^H6438 Gate ^H8179, [fn]400 ^H702 H3967 cubits ^H520. 24 And he took all ^H3605 the gold ^H2091 and silver ^H3701 and all ^H3605 the utensils ^H3627 which were found ^H4672 in the house ^H1004 of God ^H430 with Obed-edom ^H5654, and the treasures ^H214 of the king’s ^H4428 house ^H1004, the hostages ^H8594 also, and returned ^H7725 to Samaria ^H8111.

25 And Amaziah ^H558 the son ^H1121 of Joash ^H3060 king ^H4428 of Judah ^H3063 lived ^H2421 fifteen ^H2568 H6240 years ^H8141 after ^H310 the death ^H4194 of Joash ^H3060 son ^H1121 of Jehoahaz ^H3059 king ^H4428 of Israel ^H3478. 26 Now the rest ^H3499 of the acts ^H1697 of Amaziah ^H558, from first ^H7223 to last ^H314, behold ^H2009, are they not written ^H3789 in the Book ^H5612 of the Kings ^H4428 of Judah ^H3063 and Israel ^H3478? 27 Now from the time ^H6256 that Amaziah ^H558 turned ^H5493 away ^H5493 from following ^H310 Yahweh ^H3068 they conspired ^H7194 against ^H5921 him in Jerusalem ^H3389, and he fled ^H5127 to Lachish ^H3923; but they sent ^H7971 after ^H310 him to Lachish ^H3923 and put ^H4191 him to ^H4191 death ^H4191 there ^H8033. 28 Then they carried ^H5375 him on horses ^H5483 and buried ^H6912 him with his fathers ^H1 in the city ^H5892 of Judah ^H3063.
