God of All Comfort

1 Paul ^G3972, an apostle ^G652 of Christ ^G5547 Jesus ^G2424 by the will ^G2307 of God ^G2316, and Timothy ^G5095 our brother ^G80,

To the church ^G1577 of God ^G2316 which is at Corinth ^G2882 with all ^G3956 the [fn]saints ^G40 who are throughout ^G3650 Achaia ^G882:

2 Grace ^G5485 to you and peace ^G1515 from God ^G2316 our Father ^G3962 and the Lord ^G2962 Jesus ^G2424 Christ ^G5547.

3 Blessed ^G2128 be the God ^G2316 and Father ^G3962 of our Lord ^G2962 Jesus ^G2424 Christ ^G5547, the Father ^G3962 of mercies ^G3628 and God ^G2316 of all ^G3956 comfort ^G3874,

4 who comforts ^G3870 us in all ^G3956 our affliction ^G2347 so ^G1519 that we will be able ^G1410 to comfort ^G3870 those ^G3588 who are in [fn]any ^G3956 affliction ^G2347 with the comfort ^G3874 with which ^G3739 we ourselves ^G846 are comforted ^G3870 by God ^G2316. 5 For just ^G2531 as the sufferings ^G3804 of Christ ^G5547 abound ^G4052 to us ^G1473, so ^G3779 also ^G2532 our comfort ^G3874 abounds ^G4052 through ^G1223 Christ ^G5547. 6 But whether ^G1535 we are afflicted ^G2346, it is for your comfort ^G3874 and salvation ^G4991; or ^G1535 whether ^G1535 we are comforted ^G3870, it is for your comfort ^G3874, which is working ^G1754 in your perseverance ^G5281 in the same ^G846 sufferings ^G3804 which ^G3739 we also ^G2532 suffer ^G3958. 7 And our hope ^G1680 for you is firmly ^G949 grounded ^G949, knowing ^G6063 that as you are sharers ^G2844 of our sufferings ^G3804, so ^G3779 also ^G2532 you are sharers of our comfort ^G3874.

8 For we do not want ^G2309 you to be unaware ^G50, brothers ^G80, of our affliction ^G2347 which came ^G1096 to us in [fn]Asia ^G773, that we were burdened ^G916 excessively ^G2596 G5236, beyond ^G5228 our strength ^G1411, so ^G5620 that we despaired ^G1820 even ^G2532 to live ^G2198. 9 [fn]Indeed ^G235, we had ^G2192 the sentence ^G610 of death ^G2288 within ^G1722 ourselves ^G1438 so ^G2443 that we would not have confidence ^G3982 in ourselves ^G1438, but in God ^G2316 who raises ^G1453 the dead ^G3498; 10 who ^G3739 rescued ^G4506 us from so ^G5082 great ^G5082 a peril of death ^G2288, and will rescue ^G4506 us, [fn]He on whom ^G3739 we have set ^G1679 our hope ^G1679. And He will yet ^G2089 rescue ^G4506 us, 11 you also ^G2532 joining ^G4943 in ^G4943 helping ^G4943 us through your prayers ^G1162 on ^G5228 our behalf ^G5228, so ^G2443 that thanks ^G2168 may be given ^G2168 on our ^G2257 behalf ^G5528 by many ^G4183 persons ^G4383 for the gracious ^G5486 gift ^G5486 bestowed ^G1519 on us through ^G1223 the prayers of many ^G4183.

Paul’s Change of Plans

12 For our boasting ^G2746 is this ^G3778: the testimony ^G3142 of our conscience ^G4893, that in [fn]holiness ^G41 and godly ^G2316 sincerity ^G1505, not in fleshly ^G4559 wisdom ^G4678 but in the grace ^G5485 of God ^G2316, we have conducted ^G390 ourselves in the world ^G2889, and especially ^G4056 toward ^G4314 you.

13 For we write ^G1125 nothing ^G3756 else ^G243 to you than ^G2228 what ^G3739 you read ^G314 and understand ^G1921, and I hope ^G1679 you will understand ^G1921 until ^G2193 the end ^G5056, 14 just ^G2531 as you also ^G2532 partially ^G3313 did understand ^G1921 us, that we are your reason ^G2745 for ^G2745 boasting ^G2745 as you also ^G2532 are ours ^G1473, in the day ^G2250 of our Lord ^G2962 Jesus ^G2424.

15 And in this ^G3778 confidence ^G4006 I intended ^G1014 at first ^G4387 to come ^G2064 to you, so ^G2443 that you might receive ^G2192 [fn]grace ^G5485 twice ^G1208; 16 [fn]that is, to pass ^G1330 [fn]your way ^G1223 into Macedonia ^G3109, and again ^G3825 from Macedonia ^G3109 to come ^G2064 to you, and by you to be helped ^G4311 on ^G4311 my journey ^G4311 to Judea ^G2449. 17 Therefore ^G3767, was I vacillating ^G5530 G1644 when I intended ^G1014 to do this ^G3778? Or ^G2228 what ^G3739 I purpose ^G1011, do I purpose ^G1011 according ^G2596 to the flesh ^G4561, so ^G2443 that with me there will be yes ^G3483, yes ^G3483 and no ^G3756, no ^G3756 at the same time? 18 But as God ^G2316 is faithful ^G4103, our word ^G3056 to you is not yes ^G3483 and no ^G3756. 19 For the Son ^G5207 of God ^G2316, Jesus ^G2424 Christ ^G5547, who was preached ^G2784 among ^G1722 you by us—by me and Silvanus ^G4610 and Timothy ^G5095—was not yes ^G3483 and no ^G3756, but has become yes ^G3483 in Him. 20 For as many ^G3745 as are the promises ^G1860 of God ^G2316, in Him they are yes ^G3483. Therefore ^G1352 also ^G2532 through ^G1223 Him is our Amen ^G281 to the glory ^G1391 of God ^G2316 through ^G1223 us. 21 Now ^G1161 He who establishes ^G950 us with you in Christ ^G5547 and anointed ^G5548 us is God ^G2316, 22 who also ^G2532 sealed ^G4972 us and gave ^G1325 the [fn]pledge ^G728 of the Spirit ^G4151 in our hearts ^G2588.

23 But I call ^G1941 God ^G2316 as witness ^G3144 [fn]to my soul ^G5590, that to spare ^G5339 you I did not come ^G2064 again ^G3765 to Corinth ^G2882. 24 Not that we lord ^G2961 it over ^G2961 your faith ^G4102, but are workers ^G4904 with you for your joy ^G5479; for in your faith ^G4102 you are standing ^G2476 firm ^G2476.
