Ahaziah’s Messengers Meet Elijah

1 Now Moab ^H4124 revolted ^H6586 against Israel ^H3478 after ^H310 the death ^H4194 of Ahab ^H256.

2 And Ahaziah ^H274 fell ^H5307 through ^H1157 the lattice ^H7639 in his upper ^H5944 chamber ^H5944, which ^H834 was in Samaria ^H8111, and became ^H2470 ill ^H2470. So he sent ^H7971 messengers ^H4397 and said ^H559 to them, “Go ^H1980, inquire ^H1875 of Baal-zebub ^H1176, the god ^H430 of Ekron ^H6138, whether ^H518 I will live ^H2421 from this ^H2088 sickness ^H2483.” 3 But the angel ^H4397 of [fn]Yahweh ^H3068 said ^H1696 to Elijah ^H452 the Tishbite ^H8664, “Arise ^H6965, go ^H5927 up ^H5927 to meet ^H7122 the messengers ^H4397 of the king ^H4428 of Samaria ^H8111 and say ^H1696 to them, ‘Is it because ^H4480 H1097 there ^H369 is ^H369 no ^H369 God ^H430 in Israel ^H3478 that you are going ^H1980 to inquire ^H1875 of Baal-zebub ^H1176, the god ^H430 of Ekron ^H6138?’ 4 Now therefore ^H3651 thus ^H3541 says ^H559 Yahweh ^H3068, ‘[fn]You shall not come ^H3381 down ^H3381 from the bed ^H4296 where ^H834 H8033 you have gone ^H5927 up ^H5927, but you shall surely ^H4191 die ^H4191.’” Then Elijah ^H452 departed ^H1980.

5 So the messengers ^H4397 returned ^H7725 to him, and he said ^H559 to them, “[fn]Why ^H4100 have you returned ^H7725?” 6 And they said ^H559 to him, “A man ^H376 came ^H5927 up ^H5927 to meet ^H7122 us and said ^H559 to us, ‘Go ^H1980, return ^H7725 to the king ^H4428 who ^H834 sent ^H7971 you and say ^H1696 to him, “Thus ^H3541 says ^H559 Yahweh ^H3068, ‘Is it because ^H4480 H1097 there ^H369 is ^H369 no ^H369 God ^H430 in Israel ^H3478 that you are sending ^H7971 to inquire ^H1875 of Baal-zebub ^H1176, the god ^H430 of Ekron ^H6138? Therefore ^H3651 [fn]you shall not come ^H3381 down ^H3381 from the bed ^H4296 where ^H834 H8033 you have gone ^H5927 up ^H5927, but shall surely ^H4191 die ^H4191.’”’” 7 And he said ^H1696 to them, “What ^H4100 [fn]kind ^H4941 of man ^H376 was he who ^H834 came ^H5927 up ^H5927 to meet ^H7122 you and spoke ^H1696 these ^H428 words ^H1697 to you?” 8 And they said ^H559 to him, “He was a hairy ^H8181 man ^H376 with a leather ^H5785 girdle ^H232 girded ^H247 about his loins ^H4975.” And he said ^H559, “It is Elijah ^H452 the Tishbite ^H8664.”

9 Then the king sent ^H7971 to him a commander ^H8269 of fifty ^H2572 with his fifty ^H2572. And he went ^H5927 up ^H5927 to him, and behold ^H2009, he was sitting ^H3427 on the top ^H7218 of the hill ^H2022. And he said ^H1696 to him, “O man ^H376 of God ^H430, the king ^H4428 says ^H1696, ‘Come ^H3381 down ^H3381.’” 10 And Elijah ^H452 answered ^H6030 and spoke ^H1696 to the commander ^H8269 of fifty ^H2572, “If ^H518 I am a man ^H376 of God ^H430, let fire ^H784 come ^H3381 down ^H3381 from heaven ^H8064 and consume ^H398 you and your fifty ^H2572.” Then fire ^H784 came ^H3381 down ^H3381 from heaven ^H8064 and consumed ^H398 him and his fifty ^H2572.

11 So he again ^H7725 sent ^H7971 to him another ^H312 commander ^H8269 of fifty ^H2572 with his fifty ^H2572. And he answered ^H6030 and spoke ^H1696 to him, “O man ^H376 of God ^H430, thus ^H3541 says ^H559 the king ^H4428, ‘Come ^H3381 down ^H3381 quickly ^H4120.’” 12 And Elijah ^H452 answered ^H6030 and spoke ^H1696 to them, “If ^H518 I am a man ^H376 of God ^H430, let fire ^H784 come ^H3381 down ^H3381 from heaven ^H8064 and consume ^H398 you and your fifty ^H2572.” Then the fire ^H784 of God ^H430 came ^H3381 down ^H3381 from heaven ^H8064 and consumed ^H398 him and his fifty ^H2572.

13 So he again ^H7725 sent ^H7971 the commander ^H8269 of a third ^H7992 fifty ^H2572 with his fifty ^H2572. Then the third ^H7992 commander ^H8269 of fifty ^H2572 went ^H5927 up ^H5927 and came ^H935 and bowed ^H3766 down ^H3766 on his knees ^H1290 before ^H5048 Elijah ^H452, and he begged ^H2603 him and said ^H1696 to him, “O man ^H376 of God ^H430, please ^H4994 let my life ^H5315 and the lives ^H5315 of these ^H428 fifty ^H2572 servants ^H5650 of yours be ^H3365 precious ^H3365 in your sight ^H5869. 14 Behold ^H2009, fire ^H784 came ^H3381 down ^H3381 from heaven ^H8064 and consumed ^H398 the first ^H7223 two ^H8147 commanders ^H8269 of fifty ^H2572 with their fifties ^H2572; but now ^H6258 let my [fn]life ^H5315 be ^H3365 precious ^H3365 in your sight ^H5869.” 15 Then the angel ^H4397 of Yahweh ^H3068 spoke ^H1696 to Elijah ^H452, “Go ^H3381 down ^H3381 with him; do not be ^H3372 afraid ^H3372 of him.” So he arose ^H6965 and went ^H3381 down ^H3381 with him to the king ^H4428. 16 Then he spoke ^H1696 to him, “Thus ^H3541 says ^H559 Yahweh ^H3068, ‘Because ^H3282 H834 you have sent ^H7971 messengers ^H4397 to inquire ^H1875 of Baal-zebub ^H1176, the god ^H430 of Ekron ^H6138—is it because ^H4480 H1097 there ^H369 is ^H369 no ^H369 God ^H430 in Israel ^H3478 to inquire ^H1875 of His word ^H1697?—therefore ^H3651 [fn]you shall not come ^H3381 down ^H3381 from the bed ^H4296 where ^H834 H8033 you have gone ^H5927 up ^H5927, but shall surely ^H4191 die ^H4191.’”

Jehoram Reigns over Israel

17 So Ahaziah died ^H4191 according to the word ^H1697 of Yahweh ^H3068 which ^H834 Elijah ^H452 had spoken ^H1696. And because ^H3588 he had ^H1961 no ^H3808 son ^H1121, Jehoram ^H3088 became ^H4427 king ^H4427 in ^H8478 his place ^H8478 in ^H8478 the second ^H8147 year ^H8141 of Jehoram ^H3088 the son ^H1121 of Jehoshaphat ^H3092, king ^H4428 of Judah ^H3063.
