Yahweh Sends Nathan to David

1 Then Yahweh ^H3068 sent ^H7971 Nathan ^H5416 to David ^H1732. And he came ^H935 to him and [fn]said ^H559,

“There were two ^H8147 men ^H376 in one ^H259 city ^H5892, the one ^H259 rich ^H6223 and the other ^H259 poor ^H7326.

2 “The rich ^H6223 man ^H6223 had ^H1961 a great ^H3966 many ^H7235 flocks ^H6629 and herds ^H1241.

3 “But the poor ^H7326 man had nothing ^H369 H3605 except ^H3588 H518 one ^H259 little ^H6996 ewe ^H3535 lamb ^H3535

Which ^H834 he bought ^H7069 and nourished ^H2421;

And it grew ^H1431 up ^H1431 together ^H3162 with him and his children ^H1121.

It would eat ^H398 his morsel ^H6595 of bread and drink ^H8354 of his cup ^H3563 and lie ^H7901 in his bosom ^H2436,

And was like a daughter ^H1323 to him.

4 “Now a visitor ^H1982 came ^H935 to the rich ^H6223 man ^H376,

And he [fn]was unwilling ^H2550 to take ^H3947 from his own flock ^H6629 or his own herd ^H1241,

To prepare ^H6213 for the traveler ^H732 who had come ^H935 to him;

Rather he took ^H3947 the poor ^H7326 man’s ^H376 ewe ^H3535 lamb ^H3535 and prepared ^H6213 it for the man ^H376 who had come ^H935 to him.”

5 Then David’s ^H1732 anger ^H639 burned ^H2734 greatly ^H3966 against the man ^H376, and he said ^H559 to Nathan ^H5416, “As Yahweh ^H3068 lives ^H2416, surely ^H3588 the man ^H376 who has done ^H6213 this ^H2088 [fn]deserves ^H1121 to die ^H4194.

6 And he must make ^H7999 restitution ^H7999 for the lamb ^H3535 fourfold ^H706, because ^H6118 H834 he did ^H6213 this ^H2088 thing ^H1697 and had ^H2550 no ^H3808 compassion ^H2550.”

7 Nathan ^H5416 then said ^H559 to David ^H1732, “You are the man ^H376! Thus ^H3541 says ^H559 Yahweh ^H3068, the God ^H430 of Israel ^H3478, ‘It is I who anointed ^H4886 you king ^H4428 over ^H5921 Israel ^H3478 and it is I who delivered ^H5337 you from the hand ^H3027 of Saul ^H7586. 8 I also gave ^H5414 you your master’s ^H113 house ^H1004 and your master’s ^H113 wives ^H802 into your [fn]care ^H2436, and I gave ^H5414 you the house ^H1004 of Israel ^H3478 and Judah ^H3063; and if ^H518 that had been too little ^H4592, I would have added ^H3254 to you many more things like these ^H2007! 9 Why ^H4069 have you despised ^H959 the word ^H1697 of Yahweh ^H3068 by doing ^H6213 evil ^H7451 in His sight ^H5869? You have struck ^H5221 down ^H5221 Uriah ^H223 the Hittite ^H2850 with the sword ^H2719, have taken ^H3947 his wife ^H802 to be your wife ^H802, and have killed ^H2026 him with the sword ^H2719 of the sons ^H1121 of Ammon ^H5983. 10 So now ^H6258, the sword ^H2719 shall never ^{H3808 H5704 H5769} depart ^H5493 from your house ^H1004, because ^H6118 H3588 you have despised ^H959 Me and have taken ^H3947 the wife ^H802 of Uriah ^H223 the Hittite ^H2850 to be your wife ^H802.’ 11 Thus ^H3541 says ^H559 Yahweh ^H3068, ‘Behold ^H2009, I will raise ^H6965 up ^H6965 evil ^H7451 against ^H5921 you from your own household ^H1004; I will even take ^H3947 your wives ^H802 from before your sight ^H5869 and give ^H5414 them to your companion ^H7453, and he will lie ^H7901 with your wives ^H802 in the sight ^H5869 of this ^H2088 sun ^H8121. 12 Indeed ^H3588 you did ^H6213 it secretly ^H5643, but I will do ^H6213 this ^H2088 thing ^H1697 before ^H5048 all ^H3605 Israel ^H3478, and before ^H5048 the sun ^H8121.’” 13 Then David ^H1732 said ^H559 to Nathan ^H5416, “I have sinned ^H2398 against Yahweh ^H3068.” And Nathan ^H5416 said ^H559 to David ^H1732, “Yahweh ^H3068 also ^H1571 has [fn]taken ^H5674 away ^H5674 your sin ^H2403; you shall not die ^H4191. 14 However ^H657, because ^H3588 by this ^H2088 deed ^H1697 you have given ^H5006 occasion to the enemies ^H340 of Yahweh ^H3068 to blaspheme ^H5006, the son ^H1121 also ^H1571 that is born ^H3209 to you shall surely ^H4191 die ^H4191.” 15 And Nathan ^H5416 went ^H1980 to his house ^H1004.

Then Yahweh ^H3068 smote ^H5062 the child ^H3206 that Uriah’s ^H223 wife ^H802 bore ^H3205 to David ^H1732, so that he was very sick ^H605. 16 David ^H1732 therefore sought ^H1245 God ^H430 about the boy ^H5288; and David ^H1732 fasted ^H6684 H6685 and went ^H935 and spent ^H3885 the ^H3885 night ^H3885 lying ^H7901 on the ground ^H776. 17 And the elders ^H2205 of his household ^H1004 stood ^H6965 beside ^H5921 him in order to raise ^H6965 him up ^H6965 from the ground ^H776, but he was unwilling ^H3808 H14 and would not eat ^H1262 food ^H3899 with them. 18 Then it happened ^H1961 on the seventh ^H7637 day ^H3117 that the child ^H3206 died ^H4191. And the servants ^H5650 of David ^H1732 were ^H3372 afraid ^H3372 to tell ^H5046 him that the child ^H3206 was dead ^H4191, for they said ^H559, “Behold ^H2009, while the child ^H3206 was still alive ^H2416, we spoke ^H1696 to him and he did not listen ^H8085 to our voice ^H6963. How ^H349 then can we tell ^H559 him that the child ^H3206 has died ^H4191? He might do ^H6213 himself harm ^H7451!” 19 And David ^H1732 saw ^H7200 that his servants ^H5650 were whispering ^H3907 together, so David ^H1732 discerned ^H995 that the child ^H3206 had died ^H4191; so David ^H1732 said ^H559 to his servants ^H5650, “Has the child ^H3206 died ^H4191?” And they said ^H559, “He has died ^H4191.” 20 So David ^H1732 arose ^H6965 from the ground ^H776, washed ^H7364, anointed ^H5480 himself, and changed ^H2498 his clothes ^H8071; and he came ^H935 into the house ^H1004 of Yahweh ^H3068 and worshiped ^H2331. Then he came ^H935 to his own house ^H1004, and he asked ^H7592, and they set ^H7760 food ^H3899 before him, and he ate ^H398.

21 Then his servants ^H5650 said ^H559 to him, “What ^H4100 is this ^H2088 thing ^H1697 that you have done ^H6213? [fn]While ^H5668 the child ^H3206 was alive ^H2416, you fasted ^H6684 and wept ^H1058; but when ^H834 the child ^H3206 died ^H4191, you arose ^H6965 and ate ^H398 food ^H3899.” 22 Then he said ^H559, “While the child ^H3206 was still alive ^H2416, I fasted ^H6684 and wept ^H1058; for I said ^H559, ‘Who ^H4310 knows ^H3045, Yahweh ^H3068 may be ^H2603 gracious ^H2603 to me, that the child ^H3206 may live ^H2416.’ 23 But now ^H6258 he has died ^H4191; why ^H4100 should I fast ^H6684? Can ^H3201 I bring ^H7725 him back ^H7725 again ^H5750? I will go ^H1980 to him, but he will not return ^H7725 to me.”

Solomon Is Born

24 Then David ^H1732 comforted ^H5162 his wife ^H802 Bathsheba ^H1339, and went ^H935 in ^H935 to her and lay ^H7901 with her; and she gave ^H3205 birth ^H3205 to a son ^H1121, and [fn]he named ^H7121 H8034 him Solomon ^H8010. Now Yahweh ^H3068 loved ^H157 him

25 and sent ^H7971 word by the hand ^H3027 of Nathan ^H5416 the prophet ^H5030, and he named ^H7121 H8034 him [fn]Jedidiah ^H3041 for the sake ^H5668 of Yahweh ^H3068.

Joab Fights Ammon

26 Then Joab ^H3097 fought ^H3898 against Rabbah ^H7237 of the sons ^H1121 of Ammon ^H5983 and captured ^H3920 the royal ^H4410 city ^H5892.

27 And Joab ^H3097 sent ^H7971 messengers ^H4397 to David ^H1732 and said ^H559, “I have fought ^H3898 against Rabbah ^H7237, I have even ^H1571 captured ^H3920 the city ^H5892 of waters ^H4325. 28 So now ^H6258, gather ^H622 the rest ^H3499 of the people ^H5971 together and camp ^H2583 against ^H5921 the city ^H5892 and capture ^H3920 it, lest ^H6435 I capture ^H3920 the city ^H5892 myself ^H589 and it be named ^H7121 H8034 after ^H5921 me.” 29 So David ^H1732 gathered ^H622 all ^H3605 the people ^H5971 and went ^H1980 to Rabbah ^H7237, fought ^H3898 against it and captured ^H3920 it. 30 Then he took ^H3947 the crown ^H5850 of [fn]their king ^H4428 from his head ^H7218; and its weight ^H4948 was a [fn]talent ^H3603 of gold ^H2091, and in it [fn]was a precious ^H3368 stone ^H68; and it was placed on David’s ^H1732 head ^H7218. And he brought ^H3318 out ^H3318 the spoil ^H7998 of the city ^H5892 in a very ^H3966 great ^H7235 amount ^H7235. 31 He also brought ^H3318 out ^H3318 the people ^H5971 who ^H834 were in it and set ^H7760 them up ^H7760 with saws ^H4050, sharp ^H2757 iron ^H1270 instruments ^H2757, and iron ^H1270 axes ^H4037, and made them pass ^H5674 through the brickkiln ^H4404.
