Saul Persecutes the Church

1 Now Saul ^G4569 was in hearty ^G4909 agreement ^G4909 with putting ^G336 him to death ^G336.

And on that day ^G2250 a great ^G3173 persecution ^G1375 [fn]began ^G1096 against ^G1909 the church ^G1577 in Jerusalem ^G2414, and they were all ^G3956 scattered ^G1289 throughout ^G2596 the regions ^G5561 of Judea ^G2449 and Samaria ^G4540, except ^G4133 the apostles ^G652.

2 And some devout ^G2126 men ^G435 buried ^G4792 Stephen ^G4736 and made ^G4160 loud ^G3173 lamentation ^G2870 over ^G1909 him. 3 But Saul ^G4569 began ravaging ^G3075 the church ^G1577, entering ^G1531 house ^G3624 after ^G2596 house ^G3624, and dragging ^G4951 off men ^G435 and women ^G1135, he was delivering ^G3860 them into prison ^G5438.

Philip Preaches in Samaria

4 Therefore ^G3767, those ^G3588 who had been scattered ^G1289 went ^G1330 about ^G1330, proclaiming ^G2097 the good ^G2097 news ^G2097 of the word ^G3056.

5 Now Philip ^G5376 went ^G2718 down ^G2718 to the city ^G4172 of Samaria ^G4540 and began preaching ^G2784 [fn]Christ ^G5547 to them. 6 And the crowds ^G3793 with one ^G3661 accord ^G3661 were giving ^G4337 attention ^G4337 to what was being said ^G3004 by Philip ^G5376, as they heard ^G191 and saw ^G991 the [fn]signs ^G4592 which ^G3739 he was doing ^G4160. 7 For in the case of many ^G4183 who had ^G2192 unclean ^G169 spirits ^G4151, they were coming ^G1831 out ^G1831 of them shouting ^G994 with a loud ^G3173 voice ^G5456; and many ^G4183 who had been paralyzed ^G3886 and lame ^G5560 were healed ^G2323. 8 So ^G1161 there was great ^G4183 joy ^G5479 in that city ^G4172.

9 Now ^G1161 there was a man ^G435 named ^G3686 Simon ^G4613, who formerly ^G4391 was practicing ^G3096 magic ^G3096 in the city ^G4172 and astounding ^G1839 the people ^G1484 of Samaria ^G4540, claiming ^G3004 to be someone ^G5100 great ^G3173; 10 and they all ^G3956, from smallest ^G3398 to greatest ^G3173, were giving ^G4337 attention ^G4337 to him, saying ^G3004, “This ^G3778 man ^G3778 is what is called ^G2564 the Great ^G3173 Power ^G1411 of God ^G2316.” 11 And they were giving ^G4337 him attention ^G4337 because ^G1223 he had for a long ^G2425 time ^G5550 astounded ^G1839 them with his magic ^G3095 arts ^G3095. 12 But when ^G3753 they believed ^G4100 Philip ^G5376 proclaiming ^G2097 the good ^G2097 news ^G2097 about ^G4012 the kingdom ^G932 of God ^G2316 and the name ^G3686 of Jesus ^G2424 Christ ^G5547, they were being baptized ^G907, both ^G5037 men ^G435 and women ^G1135. 13 Even ^G2532 Simon ^G4613 himself ^G846 believed ^G4100; and after being baptized ^G907, he continued ^G4342 on with Philip ^G5376, and as he observed ^G2334 signs ^G4592 and great ^G3173 miracles ^G1411 taking ^G1096 place ^G1096, he was constantly astounded ^G1839.

14 Now ^G1161 when the apostles ^G652 in Jerusalem ^G2414 heard ^G191 that Samaria ^G4540 had received ^G1209 the word ^G3056 of God ^G2316, they sent ^G649 them Peter ^G4074 and John ^G2491, 15 who ^G3748 came ^G2597 down ^G2597 and prayed ^G4336 for them that they might receive ^G2983 the Holy ^G40 Spirit ^G4151. 16 For He had not yet ^G3764 fallen ^G1968 upon any ^G3762 of them; they had simply ^G3440 been ^G5225 baptized ^G907 [fn]in the name ^G3686 of the Lord ^G2962 Jesus ^G2424. 17 Then ^G5119 they began laying ^G2007 their hands ^G5495 on them, and they were receiving ^G2983 the Holy ^G40 Spirit ^G4151. 18 Now ^G1161 when Simon ^G4613 saw ^G3708 that the Spirit ^G4151 had been bestowed ^G1325 through ^G1223 the laying ^G1936 on ^G1936 of the apostles’ ^G652 hands ^G5495, he offered ^G4374 them money ^G5536, 19 saying ^G3004, “Give ^G1325 this ^G3778 authority ^G1849 to me as well ^G2532, so ^G2443 that everyone ^G1437 on ^G2007 whom ^G3739 I lay ^G2007 my hands ^G5495 may receive ^G2983 the Holy ^G40 Spirit ^G4151.” 20 But Peter ^G4074 said ^G3004 to him, “May your silver ^G694 perish ^G684 with you, because ^G3754 you supposed ^G3543 you could obtain ^G2932 the gift ^G1431 of God ^G2316 with money ^G5536! 21 You have no ^G3756 part ^G3310 or ^G3761 portion ^G2819 in this ^G3778 [fn]matter ^G3056, for your heart ^G2588 is not right ^G2117 before ^G1725 God ^G2316. 22 Therefore ^G3767 repent ^G3340 of this ^G3778 wickedness ^G2549 of yours ^G4771, and pray ^G1189 earnestly ^G1189 to the Lord ^G2962 that, if ^G1487 possible ^G686, the intention ^G1963 of your heart ^G2588 may be forgiven ^G863 you. 23 For I see ^G3708 that you are in the gall ^G5521 of bitterness ^G4088 and in the [fn]bondage ^G4886 of unrighteousness ^G93.” 24 But Simon ^G4613 answered ^G611 and said ^G3004, “Pray ^G1189 earnestly ^G1189 to the Lord ^G2962 for me yourselves ^G4771, so ^G3704 that nothing ^G3367 of what ^G3739 you have said ^G3004 may come ^G1904 upon me.”

An Ethiopian Receives Christ

25 So ^G3767, when they had solemnly ^G1263 borne ^G1263 witness ^G1263 and spoken ^G2980 the word ^G3056 of the Lord ^G2962, they started ^G5290 back ^G5290 to Jerusalem ^G2414, and were proclaiming ^G2097 the gospel ^G2097 to many ^G4183 villages ^G2968 of the Samaritans ^G4541.

26 But an angel ^G32 of the [fn]Lord ^G2962 spoke ^G2980 to Philip ^G5376 saying ^G3004, “Rise ^G450 up ^G450 and go ^G4198 south ^G3314 to the road ^G3598 that descends ^G2597 from Jerusalem ^G2419 to Gaza ^G1048.” ([fn]This ^G3778 is a desert ^G2048 road.)

27 So ^G2532 he rose ^G450 up ^G450 and went ^G4198; and behold ^G2400, there was an Ethiopian ^G128 eunuch ^G2135, a court ^G1413 official ^G1413 of Candace ^G2582, queen ^G938 of the Ethiopians ^G128, who ^G3739 was in ^G1909 charge ^G1909 of all ^G3956 her treasure ^G1047; and he had come ^G2064 to Jerusalem ^G2419 to worship ^G4352, 28 and he was returning ^G5290 and sitting ^G2521 in his [fn]chariot ^G716, and was reading ^G314 the prophet ^G4396 Isaiah ^G2268. 29 Then ^G2532 the Spirit ^G4151 said ^G3004 to Philip ^G5376, “Go ^G4334 over and join ^G2853 this ^G3778 [fn]chariot ^G716.” 30 And Philip ^G5376 ran ^G4370 up ^G4370 and heard ^G191 him reading ^G314 Isaiah ^G2268 the prophet ^G4396, and said ^G3004, “Do you understand ^G1097 what ^G3739 you are reading ^G314?” 31 And he said ^G3004, “Well ^G1063, how ^G4459 could ^G1410 I, unless ^G1437 G3361 someone ^G5100 guides ^G3594 me?” And he invited ^G3870 Philip ^G5376 to come ^G305 up ^G305 and sit ^G2523 with him. 32 Now ^G1161 the passage ^G4042 of Scripture ^G1124 which ^G3739 he was reading ^G314 was this ^G3778:

“AS A SHEEP ^G4263 IS LED ^G71 TO SLAUGHTER ^G4967;

AND AS A LAMB ^G286 BEFORE ^G1726 ITS SHEARER ^G2751 IS SILENT ^G880,

SO ^G3779 HE DOES NOT OPEN ^G455 HIS MOUTH ^G4750.

33 “IN HUMILIATION ^G5014 HIS JUDGMENT ^G2920 WAS TAKEN ^G142 AWAY ^G142;

WHO ^G5101 WILL [fn]RECOUNT ^G1334 HIS [fn]GENERATION ^G1074?

FOR HIS LIFE ^G2222 IS REMOVED ^G142 FROM THE EARTH ^G1093.”

34 And the eunuch ^G2135 answered ^G611 Philip ^G5376 and said ^G3004, “I ask ^G1189 you earnestly ^G1189, of whom ^G5101 does the prophet ^G4396 say ^G3004 this ^G3778? Of himself ^G1438 or ^G2228 of someone ^G5100 else ^G2087?” 35 Then ^G2532 Philip ^G5376 opened ^G455 his mouth ^G4750, and beginning ^G757 from this ^G3778 Scripture ^G1124 he proclaimed ^G2097 the good ^G2097 news ^G2097 about Jesus ^G2424 to him. 36 And as they went ^G4198 along ^G2596 the road ^G3598 they came ^G2064 to some ^G5100 water ^G5204; and the eunuch ^G2135 *said ^G5346, “Look ^G2400! Water ^G5204! What ^G5101 prevents ^G2967 me from being baptized ^G907?” 37 [fn][And Philip ^G5376 said ^G3004, “If ^G1487 you believe ^G4100 with all ^G3650 your heart ^G2588, you may ^G1832.” And he answered ^G611 and said ^G3004, “I believe ^G4100 that Jesus ^G2424 Christ ^G5547 is the Son ^G5207 of God ^G2316.”] 38 And he ordered ^G2753 the [fn]chariot ^G716 to stop ^G2476, and they both ^G297 went ^G2597 down ^G2597 into the water ^G5204, Philip ^G5376 as ^G5037 well ^G5037 as the eunuch ^G2135, and he baptized ^G907 him. 39 When ^G3753 they came ^G305 up ^G305 out of the water ^G5204, the Spirit ^G4151 of the Lord ^G2962 snatched ^G726 Philip ^G5376 away ^G726, and the eunuch ^G2135 no ^G3765 longer ^G3765 saw ^G3708 him, [fn]but went ^G4198 on his way ^G3598 rejoicing ^G5463. 40 But Philip ^G5376 [fn]found ^G2147 himself at [fn]Azotus ^G108, and as he passed ^G1330 through ^G1330 he kept proclaiming ^G2097 the gospel ^G2097 to all ^G3956 the cities ^G4172 until ^G2193 he came ^G2064 to Caesarea ^G2542.
