Clean and Unclean Animals

1 “You are the sons ^H1121 of Yahweh ^H3068 your God ^H430; you shall not gash ^H1413 yourselves nor ^H3808 [fn]shave ^H7760 H7144 your forehead ^H996 H5869 for the sake of the dead ^H4191.

2 For you are a holy ^H6918 people ^H5971 to Yahweh ^H3068 your God ^H430, and Yahweh ^H3068 has chosen ^H977 you to be a people ^H5971 for His [fn]treasured ^H5459 possession ^H5459 out of all ^H3605 the peoples ^H5971 who ^H834 are on the face ^H6440 of the earth ^H127.

3 “You shall not eat ^H398 any ^H3605 abominable ^H8441 thing ^H8441. 4 These ^H2088 are the animals ^H929 which ^H834 you may eat ^H398: the ox ^H7794, the sheep ^H3775 H7716, the goat ^H5795, 5 [fn]the deer ^H354, the gazelle ^H6643, the roebuck ^H3180, the wild ^H689 goat ^H689, the ibex ^H1788, the antelope ^H8377, and the mountain ^H2169 sheep ^H2169. 6 And any ^H3605 animal ^H929 that divides ^H6536 the hoof ^H6541 and has ^H8156 the hoof ^H8157 split ^H8156 in [fn]two ^H8147 and [fn]chews ^H5927 the cud ^H1625, among the animals ^H929, that one you may eat ^H398. 7 Nevertheless ^H389, you are not to eat ^H398 of these ^H2088 among ^H4480 those which [fn]chew ^H5927 the cud ^H1625 or among ^H4480 those that divide ^H6536 the hoof ^H6541 in [fn]two ^H8156: the camel ^H1581 and the [fn]rabbit ^H768 and the [fn]shaphan ^H8227, for though they [fn]chew ^H5927 the cud ^H1625, they do not divide ^H6536 the hoof ^H6541; they are unclean ^H2931 for you. 8 And the pig ^H2386, because ^H3588 it divides ^H6536 the hoof ^H6541 but does not chew the cud ^H1625, it is unclean ^H2931 for you. You shall not eat ^H398 any ^H4480 of their flesh ^H1320 nor ^H3808 touch ^H5060 their carcasses ^H5038.

9 “These ^H2088 you may eat ^H398 of all ^H3605 that are in water ^H4325: anything ^H3605 that has fins ^H5579 and scales ^H7193 you may eat ^H398, 10 but anything ^H3605 that does not ^H369 have ^H369 fins ^H5579 and scales ^H7193 you shall not eat ^H398; it is unclean ^H2931 for you.

11 “You may eat ^H398 any ^H3605 clean ^H2889 bird ^H6833. 12 But these ^H2088 are the ones which ^H834 you shall not eat ^H398: the [fn]eagle ^H5404 and the vulture ^H6538 and the [fn]buzzard ^H5822, 13 and the red kite ^H1676, the falcon ^H1772, and the kite ^H344 in their kinds ^H4327, 14 and every ^H3605 raven ^H6158 in its kind ^H4327, 15 and the ostrich ^H3284, the owl ^H8464, the gull ^H7828, and the hawk ^H5322 in their kinds ^H4327, 16 the little ^H3563 owl ^H3563, the [fn]great ^H3244 owl ^H3244, the white ^H8580 owl ^H8580, 17 the pelican ^H6893, the carrion ^H7360 vulture ^H7360, the cormorant ^H7994, 18 the stork ^H2624, and the heron ^H601 in their kinds ^H4327, and the hoopoe ^H1744 and the bat ^H5847. 19 And all ^H3605 the [fn]teeming ^H8318 life ^H8318 with wings ^H5775 are unclean ^H2931 to you; they shall not be eaten ^H398. 20 You may eat ^H398 any ^H3605 clean ^H2889 bird ^H5775.

21 “You shall not eat ^H398 anything ^H3605 which ^H5038 dies ^H5038 of itself. You may give ^H5414 it to the sojourner ^H1616 who ^H834 is within your gates ^H8179, so that he may eat ^H398 it, or ^H176 you may sell ^H4376 it to a foreigner ^H5237, for you are a holy ^H6918 people ^H5971 to Yahweh ^H3068 your God ^H430. You shall not boil ^H1310 a young ^H1423 goat ^H1423 in its mother’s ^H517 milk ^H2461.

22 “You shall surely ^H6237 tithe ^H6237 all ^H3605 the produce ^H8393 from [fn]what ^H2233 you sow ^H2233, which comes ^H3318 out ^H3318 of the field ^H7704 every ^H8141 year ^H8141. 23 And you shall eat ^H398 in the presence ^H6440 of Yahweh ^H3068 your God ^H430, at the place ^H4725 where ^H834 H8033 He chooses ^H977 for His name ^H8034 to dwell ^H7931, the tithe ^H4643 of your grain ^H1715, your new ^H8492 wine ^H8492, your oil ^H3323, and the firstborn ^H1060 of your herd ^H1241 and your flock ^H6629, so ^H4616 that you may learn ^H3925 to fear ^H3372 Yahweh ^H3068 your God ^H430 all ^H3605 your days ^H3117. 24 And if ^H3588 the [fn]distance ^H1870 is ^H7235 so great ^H7235 for you that you are ^H3201 not able ^H3201 to [fn]bring ^H5375 the tithe, since ^H3588 the place ^H4725 where ^H834 H8033 Yahweh ^H3068 your God ^H430 chooses ^H977 to set ^H7760 His name ^H8034 is ^H7368 too ^H4480 far ^H7368 away ^H7368 from you when ^H3588 Yahweh ^H3068 your God ^H430 blesses ^H1288 you, 25 then you shall [fn]exchange ^H5414 it for money ^H3701 and bind ^H6696 the money ^H3701 in your hand ^H3027 and go ^H1980 to the place ^H4725 which ^H834 Yahweh ^H3068 your God ^H430 chooses ^H977. 26 And you may spend ^H5414 the money ^H3701 for whatever ^H3605 H834 your [fn]heart ^H5315 desires ^H183: for oxen ^H1241 or sheep ^H6629 or wine ^H3196 or strong ^H7941 drink ^H7941 or whatever ^H3605 H834 your [fn]heart ^H5315 [fn]desires ^H7592; and there ^H8033 you shall eat ^H398 in the presence ^H6440 of Yahweh ^H3068 your God ^H430 and be glad ^H8055, you and your household ^H1004. 27 Also you shall not forsake ^H5800 the Levite ^H3881 who ^H834 is within your gates ^H8179, for he has ^H369 no ^H369 portion ^H2506 or inheritance ^H5159 among ^H5973 you.

28 “At the end ^H7097 of every third ^H7969 year ^H8141 you shall bring ^H3318 out ^H3318 all ^H3605 the tithe ^H4643 of your produce ^H8393 in that year ^H8141 and shall deposit ^H5117 it within your gates ^H8179. 29 And the Levite ^H3881, because ^H3588 he has ^H369 no ^H369 portion ^H2506 or inheritance ^H5159 among ^H5973 you, and the sojourner ^H1616, the [fn]orphan ^H3490, and the widow ^H490 who ^H834 are within your gates ^H8179, shall come ^H935 and eat ^H398 and be ^H7646 satisfied ^H7646, in order ^H4616 that Yahweh ^H3068 your God ^H430 may bless ^H1288 you in all ^H3605 the work ^H4639 of your hand ^H3027 which ^H834 you do ^H6213.
