Deuteronomy 17 – Legacy Standard Bible (LSB)

1 “You shall not sacrifice ^H2076 to Yahweh ^H3068 your God ^H430 an ox ^H7794 or a sheep ^H7716 which ^H834 has ^H1961 a defect ^H3971 or any ^H3605 [fn]blemish ^H1697 H7451, for that is an abominable ^H8441 thing ^H8441 to Yahweh ^H3068 your God ^H430.

2 “If ^H3588 there is found ^H4672 in your midst ^H7130, in any ^H259 of your gates ^H8179 of the towns which ^H834 Yahweh ^H3068 your God ^H430 is giving ^H5414 you, a man ^H376 or ^H176 a woman ^H802 who ^H834 does ^H6213 what ^H7451 is ^H7451 evil ^H7451 in the sight ^H5869 of Yahweh ^H3068 your God ^H430, by trespassing ^H5674 against His covenant ^H1285, 3 and has gone ^H1980 and served ^H5647 other ^H312 gods ^H430 and worshiped ^H2331 them, or the sun ^H8121 or ^H176 the moon ^H3394 or ^H176 any ^H3605 of the heavenly ^H8064 host ^H6635, which ^H834 I have not commanded ^H6680, 4 and if it is told ^H5046 to you and you have heard ^H8085 of it, then you shall inquire ^H1875 thoroughly ^H3190. Behold ^H2009, if it is true ^H571 and the matter ^H1697 is confirmed ^H3559 that this ^H2088 abomination ^H8441 has been done ^H6213 in Israel ^H3478, 5 then you shall bring ^H3318 out ^H3318 that man ^H376 or ^H176 that woman ^H802 who ^H834 has done ^H6213 this ^H2088 evil ^H7451 deed ^H1697 to your gates ^H8179, that is, the man ^H376 or ^H176 the woman ^H802, and you shall stone ^H5619 them, and they will die ^H4191. 6 On the mouth ^H6310 of two ^H8147 witnesses ^H5707 or ^H176 three ^H7969 witnesses ^H5707, he who is to die ^H4191 shall be put ^H4191 to ^H4191 death ^H4191; he shall not be put ^H4191 to ^H4191 death ^H4191 on the mouth ^H6310 of one ^H259 witness ^H5707. 7 The hand ^H3027 of the witnesses ^H5707 shall be first ^H7223 against him to put ^H4191 him to ^H4191 death ^H4191, and afterward ^H314 the hand ^H3027 of all ^H3605 the people ^H5971. So you shall purge ^H1197 the evil ^H7451 from your midst ^H7130.

Judging Cases

8 “If ^H3588 any case ^H1697 is ^H6381 too ^H4480 difficult ^H6381 for you to judge ^H4941, between ^H996 [fn]one kind of homicide ^H1818 or another ^H1818, between ^H996 [fn]one kind of lawsuit ^H1779 or another ^H1779, and between ^H996 [fn]one kind of assault ^H5061 or another ^H5061, being cases ^H1697 of dispute ^H7379 in your gates ^H8179, then you shall arise ^H6965 and go ^H5927 up ^H5927 to the place ^H4725 which ^H834 Yahweh ^H3068 your God ^H430 chooses ^H977.

9 So you shall come ^H935 to the Levitical ^H3881 priest ^H3548 or the judge ^H8199 who ^H834 is in office in those ^H1992 days ^H3117, and you shall inquire ^H1875 of them, and they will declare ^H5046 to you the judgment ^H1697 in the case ^H4941. 10 And you shall do ^H6213 according ^H5921 to the [fn]terms ^H6310 of the judgment ^H1697 which ^H834 they declare ^H5046 to you from that place ^H4725 which ^H834 Yahweh ^H3068 chooses ^H977; and you shall be ^H8104 careful ^H8104 to do ^H6213 according to all ^H3605 that they teach ^H3384 you. 11 According ^H5921 to ^H5921 the [fn]terms ^H6310 of the law ^H8451 which ^H834 they teach ^H3384 you, and according ^H5921 to ^H5921 the judgment ^H4941 which ^H834 they tell ^H5046 you, you shall do ^H6213; you shall not turn ^H5493 aside ^H5493 from the word ^H1697 which ^H834 they declare ^H5046 to you, to the right ^H3225 or the left ^H8040. 12 And the man ^H376 who ^H834 acts ^H6213 presumptuously ^H2087 by not listening ^H8085 to the priest ^H3548 who stands ^H5975 there ^H8033 to minister ^H8334 to Yahweh ^H3068 your God ^H430, or ^H176 to the judge ^H8199, that man ^H376 shall die ^H4191; thus you shall purge ^H1197 the evil ^H7451 from Israel ^H3478. 13 Then all ^H3605 the people ^H5971 will hear ^H8085 and be ^H3372 afraid ^H3372 and will not act ^H2102 presumptuously ^H2102 again ^H5750.

Statutes for the King

14 “When ^H3588 you enter ^H935 the land ^H776 which ^H834 Yahweh ^H3068 your God ^H430 gives ^H5414 you, and you possess ^H3423 it and live ^H3427 in it, and you say ^H559, ‘I will set ^H7760 a king ^H4428 over ^H5921 me like all ^H3605 the nations ^H1471 who ^H834 are around ^H5439 me,’

15 you shall surely ^H7760 set ^H7760 a king ^H4428 over ^H5921 you whom ^H834 Yahweh ^H3068 your God ^H430 chooses ^H977, one from among ^H7130 your brothers ^H251 you shall set ^H7760 as king ^H4428 over ^H5921 yourselves; you may ^H3201 not put ^H5414 a foreigner ^H5237 over ^H5921 yourselves who ^H834 is not your brother ^H251. 16 Moreover ^H7534, he shall not multiply ^H7235 horses ^H5483 for himself, nor ^H3808 shall he cause the people ^H5971 to return ^H7725 to Egypt ^H4714 to multiply ^H7235 horses ^H5483. Yahweh ^H3068 has said ^H559 to you, ‘You shall never ^H3808 again ^H3254 return ^H7725 that way ^H1870.’ 17 And he shall not multiply ^H7235 wives ^H802 for himself, [fn]or ^H3808 else ^H3808 his heart ^H3824 will turn ^H5493 away ^H5493; nor ^H3808 shall he greatly ^H3966 increase ^H7235 silver ^H3701 and gold ^H2091 for himself.

18 “Now it will be ^H1961 when he sits ^H3427 on the throne ^H3678 of his kingdom ^H4467, that he shall write ^H3789 for himself a copy ^H4932 of this ^H2088 law ^H8451 on a scroll ^H5612 [fn]in the presence ^H6440 of the Levitical ^H3881 priests ^H3548. 19 And it shall be with him, and he shall read ^H7121 it all ^H3605 the days ^H3117 of his life ^H2416, that he may learn ^H3925 to fear ^H3372 Yahweh ^H3068 his God ^H430, [fn]to carefully ^H6213 observe ^H6213 all ^H3605 the words ^H1697 of this ^H2088 law ^H8451 and these ^H428 statutes ^H2706, 20 that his heart ^H3824 may not be ^H7311 lifted ^H7311 up ^H7311 above ^H4480 his brothers ^H251 and that he may not turn ^H5493 aside ^H5493 from the commandment ^H4687, to the right ^H3225 or the left ^H8040, so ^H4616 that he may prolong ^H748 his days ^H748 H3117 in his kingdom ^H4467, he and his sons ^H1121 in the midst ^H7130 of Israel ^H3478.
