Idolatrous Elders Punished

1 Then some ^H376 elders ^H2205 of Israel ^H3478 came ^H935 to me and sat ^H3427 down ^H3427 before ^H6440 me.

2 And the word ^H1697 of Yahweh ^H3068 came ^H1961 to me, saying ^H559, 3 “Son ^H1121 of man ^H120, these ^H428 men ^H376 have set ^H5927 up ^H5927 their idols ^H1544 in their hearts ^H3820 and have put ^H5414 right ^H5227 before ^H5227 their faces ^H6440 the stumbling ^H4383 block ^H4383 of their iniquity ^H5771. Should I be inquired ^H1875 by them at ^H1875 all ^H1875? 4 Therefore ^H3651 speak ^H1696 to them and tell ^H559 them, ‘Thus ^H3541 says ^H559 Lord ^H136 Yahweh ^H3068, “Any ^H376 man ^H376 of the house ^H1004 of Israel ^H3478 who ^H834 sets ^H5927 up ^H5927 his idols ^H1544 in his heart ^H3820, puts ^H7760 right ^H5227 before ^H5227 his face ^H6440 the stumbling ^H4383 block ^H4383 of his iniquity ^H5771, and then comes ^H935 to the prophet ^H5030, I Yahweh ^H3068 will be brought ^H6030 to give ^H6030 him an answer ^H6030 [fn]in light of it, [fn]in light of the multitude ^H7230 of his idols ^H1544, 5 in order ^H4616 to seize ^H8610 the house ^H1004 of Israel ^H3478 by their heart ^H3820, those who ^H834 are [fn]estranged ^H2114 from Me through all ^H3605 their idols ^H1544.”’

6 “Therefore ^H3651 say ^H559 to the house ^H1004 of Israel ^H3478, ‘Thus ^H3541 says ^H559 Lord ^H136 Yahweh ^H3068, “[fn]Turn ^H7725 back ^H7725 and turn ^H7725 away ^H7725 from your idols ^H1544 and turn ^H7725 your faces ^H6440 away ^H7725 from all ^H3605 your abominations ^H8441. 7 For anyone ^H376 of the house ^H1004 of Israel ^H3478 or of the sojourners ^H1616 who ^H834 sojourn ^H1481 in Israel ^H3478 who separates ^H5144 himself from Me, sets ^H5927 up ^H5927 his idols ^H1544 in his heart ^H3820, puts ^H7760 right ^H5227 before ^H5227 his face ^H6440 the stumbling ^H4383 block ^H4383 of his iniquity ^H5771, and then comes ^H935 to the prophet ^H5030 to inquire ^H1875 of Me for himself, I, Yahweh ^H3068, will be brought ^H6030 to answer ^H6030 him in My own person. 8 I will set ^H5414 My face ^H6440 against that man ^H376 and make ^H7760 him a sign ^H226 and [fn]a proverb ^H4912, and I will cut ^H3772 him off ^H3772 from among ^H8432 My people ^H5971. So you will know ^H3045 that I am Yahweh ^H3068.

9 “But if ^H3588 the prophet ^H5030 is enticed ^H6601 to speak ^H1696 a word ^H1697, it is I, Yahweh ^H3068, who have enticed ^H6601 that prophet ^H5030, and I will stretch ^H5186 out ^H5186 My hand ^H3027 against ^H5921 him and destroy ^H8045 him from among ^H8432 My people ^H5971 Israel ^H3478. 10 They will bear ^H5375 the punishment of their iniquity ^H5771; as the iniquity ^H5771 of the inquirer ^H1875 is, so the iniquity ^H5771 of the prophet ^H5030 will be, 11 in order ^H4616 that the house ^H1004 of Israel ^H3478 may no ^H3808 longer ^H5750 wander ^H8582 from Me and no ^H3808 longer ^H5750 defile ^H2930 themselves with all ^H3605 their transgressions ^H6588. Thus they will be My people ^H5971, and I shall be their God ^H430,”’ declares ^H5002 Lord ^H136 Yahweh ^H3068.”

Calamitous Judgments of Jerusalem

12 Then the word ^H1697 of Yahweh ^H3068 came ^H1961 to me saying ^H559,

13 “Son ^H1121 of man ^H120, if ^H3588 a country ^H776 sins ^H2398 against Me by committing ^H4603 unfaithfulness ^H4603, and I stretch ^H5186 out ^H5186 My hand ^H3027 against ^H5921 it, break ^H7665 its staff ^H4294 of bread ^H3899, send ^H7971 famine ^H7458 against it, and cut ^H3772 off ^H3772 from it both man ^H120 and beast ^H929, 14 even though these ^H428 three ^H7969 men ^H376, Noah ^H5146, Daniel ^H1840, and Job ^H347 were in its midst ^H8432, by their own righteousness ^H6666 they could only deliver ^H5337 themselves ^H5315,” declares ^H5002 Lord ^H136 Yahweh ^H3068. 15 “If ^H3863 I were to cause wild ^H7451 beasts ^H2416 to pass ^H5674 through the land ^H776 and they bereaved ^H7921 it of children ^H7921 and it became ^H1961 desolate ^H8077 so ^H4480 H1097 that ^H4480 H1097 no ^H1097 one ^H1097 would pass ^H5674 through ^H5674 it because ^H4480 H6440 of the beasts ^H2416, 16 though these ^H428 three ^H7969 men ^H376 were in its midst ^H8432, as I live ^H2416,” declares ^H5002 Lord ^H136 Yahweh ^H3068, “they could not deliver ^H5337 either ^H518 their sons ^H1121 or ^H518 their daughters ^H1323. They alone ^H905 would be delivered ^H5337, but the country ^H776 would become desolate ^H8077. 17 Or ^H176 if I should bring ^H935 a sword ^H2719 on that country ^H776 and say ^H559, ‘Let the sword ^H2719 pass ^H5674 through the country ^H776 and cut ^H3772 off ^H3772 man ^H120 and beast ^H929 from it,’ 18 even though these ^H428 three ^H7969 men ^H376 were in its midst ^H8432, as I live ^H2416,” declares ^H5002 Lord ^H136 Yahweh ^H3068, “they could not deliver ^H5337 either their sons ^H1121 or their daughters ^H1323, but they alone ^H905 would be delivered ^H5337. 19 Or ^H176 if I should send ^H7971 a plague ^H1698 against ^H413 that country ^H776 and pour ^H8210 out ^H8210 My wrath ^H2534 in blood ^H1818 on it to cut ^H3772 off ^H3772 man ^H120 and beast ^H929 from it, 20 even though Noah ^H5146, Daniel ^H1840, and Job ^H347 were in its midst ^H8432, as I live ^H2416,” declares ^H5002 Lord ^H136 Yahweh ^H3068, “they could not deliver ^H5337 either ^H518 their son ^H1121 or ^H518 their daughter ^H1323. They would deliver ^H5337 only themselves ^H5315 by their righteousness ^H6666.”

21 For thus ^H3541 says ^H559 Lord ^H136 Yahweh ^H3068, “How ^H637 much ^H637 more ^H637 H3588 when ^H3588 I send ^H7971 My four ^H702 calamitous ^H7451 judgments ^H8201 against ^H413 Jerusalem ^H3389: sword ^H2719, famine ^H7458, wild ^H7451 beasts ^H2416, and plague ^H1698 to cut ^H3772 off ^H3772 man ^H120 and beast ^H929 from it! 22 Yet, behold ^H2009, [fn]survivors ^H6413 will be left ^H3498 in it who will be brought ^H3318 out ^H3318, both sons ^H1121 and daughters ^H1323. Behold ^H2009, they are going to come ^H3318 forth ^H3318 to you, and you will see ^H7200 their way ^H1870 and actions ^H5949; then you will be comforted ^H5162 for the calamity ^H7451 which ^H834 I have brought ^H935 against ^H5921 Jerusalem ^H3389 for everything ^H3605 which ^H834 I have brought ^H935 upon it. 23 Then they will comfort ^H5162 you when ^H3588 you see ^H7200 their way ^H1870 and actions ^H5949, so you will know ^H3045 that I have not done ^H6213 in vain ^H2600 all ^H3605 that ^H834 I did ^H6213 [fn]to it,” declares ^H5002 Lord ^H136 Yahweh ^H3068.
